This property is quite tired. Minimal updating has occurred over many years. The beds are soft and saggy, carpet is old, bathtubs are small and the noise from the motors of the jacuzzi tubs is very loud in the rooms below! We thought it was a saw, sounded like someone was doing renovations above our room. No 'continental' breakfast, just coffee pods and tea bags. Agree with Doreen B - rooms are shabby. Don't expect daily room service as that must now be a thing of the past. Rates don't reflect the lack of services or condition of the property. Location is fine. Not far out of town. Does have access to the beach - with a walk through a field and then a hike down a cliff. So if your up for that? There is a paved walk/bike path that runs behind the property and is heavily used. Don't expect privacy on your little deck - if you are lucky to face the ocean. Parking is slim, but there is a public parking lot right next door that you could walk over from. The staff is great. They are well aware of the properties shortcomings. Would I come back here again - no. read more

I booked this room for a 4-night stay a couple months in advance and couldn't wait till the date arrived. Check-in was easy and we got a room with an ocean view of the Mendocino Coast as well as a jacuzzi in the room. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. The bonuses of the Pacific Ocean view and the jacuzzi was something I never imagined I'd experience. I think my only complaints are 1. the remote control was weird like you had to point it a certain way for it to work and 2. a tiny bathroom. But these were minor. We haven't been here for 5 years, since 2019. It's now 2025 & they are still in covid-era. Covid protocols in place (no masks thankfully). Room smells strongly of disinfectant. This hotel is great. We stayed here for a couple nights and it was a lot of fun. The view is really nice and it isn't the most cheap hotel, but I'd say, if someone was going to fort Bragg, I would recommend this hotel. They serve hit chocolate and coffee and stuff like that. They provide pretty sweet looking cups, and again, the view is great. But... When we got here they said that the upstairs room is ready, but the downstairs isn't. We were confused because we payed for two upstairs rooms. Apparently if you pay for an upstairs room, there is no guarantee you will get it. Kinda weird but it's ok. On a trip to Fort Bragg last week, we decided to stay somewhere new. We are usually on a low budget, but decided to not be so cheap. And we nailed it by choosing the very affordable Surf and Sand Lodge. We showed up on Friday afternoon to check in and was instantly and luckily upgraded to room 504. We were welcomed by Bridgette who told us about an event downtown, and some local hot spots. When we got to our room it was all smiles. The very clean room smelled good, and looked good as well, and the view from the balcony was spectacular. The beds were super comfortable, and each bed had 4 comfy pillows. I wanted to just chill in the room for 3 days, but that's not why I go to Fort Bragg. I was there for the Christmas parade, shopping, Sea Pal, and some beach time. The room had all the amenities possible including bath robes. But the coffee pot got the most use, we made coffee and hot chocolate many times. Overall an excellent experience and will most definitely stay here again and again. read more

It was raining so we didn't get to go out there, but hearing it at night and having the patio door open was AMAZING! Convenient location close to beaches and restaurants. Very nice customer service at check-in and I appreciated that she walked us to our room while helping hold my baby's diaper bag. View from downstairs king room was spectacular and we watched the sunset. Very clean room and comfy bed. My son complained of room being too hot at bedtime and we couldn't find any AC or fan. There no windows so we had to leave open the sliding glass door for air for him. I did like the sound of the ocean at night but it wasn't quiet until about 10pm. Neighbors were talking loudly and this bothered my son from falling asleep. I ended up playing white noice on my phone but it used up my battery and I forgot my phone charger. Unfortunately, my son asked to go home at bedtime which he's never done before when we've traveled. However, during the day time he had fun in the room on bed and walking out to the soft green grass right outside our patio. Great standard stay. We got it for the views. Too bad it was too overcast, all we saw was fog, lol. We stayed in the Sunset building. There's beach access. Unfortunately we didn't check it out before checking out because it was raining/sprinkling. Check in was smooth and easy. We got a free upgrade upstairs for double beds and they were able to accommodate our early check in. No elevators available, just one flight if stairs up. It was nice they had robes hanging in the closet. The space is open and spacious. Comes with fridge, microwave, big TV. Check out was easy (contact free and preferred.) We left our keys in the room and called the desk to let them know we were checking out. Simply, no complaints. It was a great standard stay. Thank you! read more

We stayed at the Surf and Sand Lodge in a pet-friendly room in the Dolphin building with a jacuzzi tub and a private balcony. We stayed 3 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The location is amazing with incredible views of the ocean. Whether you get a hotel room with a view or not, you are steps away from the ocean. You can soak in the views, walk along the rugged coastline, or walk down to the beach. If you walk or ride a bike a little over a mile to Otsuchi Point (a little past Glass Beach) you will have panoramic views that are breathtaking near sunset. I loved the large jacuzzi tub, sitting out on our private balcony and watching the waves and sunset, and it was very convenient to walk our dog along the old railroad path, which is flat and paved. There is a decent size fridge in the room and a microwave, which is nice. I got a good nights rest. The only downside I would say is that there is no breakfast due to Covid. There is also some street noise since it's near the road. All in all, it's a great hotel due to the location, ocean views, jacuzzi tub in some of the rooms, private balconies in some of the rooms, and that it's pet friendly. Stayed here for the second time for our anniversary (first time was back in 2022 for our very first). I booked online for a double room as hubby sometimes moves a lot in his sleep and I'm a very light sleeper and we didn't want to risk not sleeping while on vacation so we wanted the option of having that second bed if needed. Upon check in we were surprised with the news that we received a complimentary upgrade to the owners suite. The wonderful gal that checked us in (I am terrible with names, I apologize) showed us the suite and was kind and knowledgeable. The view can't be beat and it's a short walk to the beach. The stay itself was extremely comfortable and we loved having the space to ourselves. The beds were very comfortable and the suite itself was clean and well cared for. The main bathroom was spacious and featured a jacuzzi tub with a beautiful view of the ocean. This upgrade was a lovely surprise and really made our trip spectacular. I love this little spot and will be sure to continue to stay here when we visit and recommend our friends and family to stay also. read more

I'll start with the good news: they fully refunded our night stay, which was absolutely the right thing to do. Meanwhile,, Not a good experience at this motel. Our check in time was not honored. We arrived an hour and a half after check-in time in our room was still not ready. They offered to change rooms for us but the available room stank badly from Clorox fumes. So we waited for our original room. Then a huge noise from some kind of water heater or other mechanical equipment began late at night adjacent to our room, and our attempts to find management or maintenance to help with it were fruitless. The one nice staff person that was on premises was unable to do anything about it. It took three phone calls across a week's time (in between which their promised return call never came) to find someone in upper management who could make the appropriate refund of the money we paid. The room had been very expensive for the most basic motel accommodation that it actually is, so I was very pleased that they were willing to refund our full stay. But sadly, I cannot recommend the motel. read more

This was everything I wanted and I'm so pleased after my stay here a couple weeks ago. An ocean view, private deck, and beach access all came with a cozy, clean room that didn't break the bank. Ocean view rooms can be deceiving, but this one was not. It was absolutely perfect and romantic. The beach access does include a steep climb down to the beach, but I'm out of shape and I was able to get it done no problem. The room we rented had a patio with stairs for an easy access to the bike and walking paths, bluffs, and the beach itself. AMAZING SUNSETS!!! If one wanted an easier way to get to the beach, Pudding Creek beach is about a mile down from here, towards town. It's a nice walk on a paved path until you meet the bridge and sand. They did have bikes for rent as well, for said paved path. Kids had scooters and skateboards too. Many families and dogs (I don't think Surf & Sand is dog friendly but at least one of the motels next door was.) in the area, and some couples too. Check in was painless, and the front desk clerk was very nice. Check out took no time at all and I elected to do so over the phone. No frills reception, no breakfast offered, or many amenities. I didn't mind because none of those things were why I specifically chose this place to stay anyway. They did say that the sister property next door stayed open all night and had more amenities. At first I worried the parking area would fill up over the weekend, but this was not to be. I was always able to find a spot. Walls are a tad thin, so be prepared for that. Everyone respected quiet hours, but if someone were to party it up, everyone in the building would hear it. I would absolutely stay here again. I can't wait until I can stay here again! read more

Great things to say about this place, not withholding some criticism, of course. 1) The. View. Lookatit look at my picture! That is what we walked in on. Not some strange act of questionable fetish. But rather a view that is out of this world. Here on Earth. My gosh we were lucky my wife booked this. The view at sunset was beyond belief. Again refer to picture. 3 nights. Some Marine layer fog build up. Some clear as day. A bit nippy and yet warm. Not as cold as expected but you'll definitely feel the wind while standing on the balcony (2nd floor.) 2) Which brings me to my next point. Private balcony on the second floor. So ridiculously unbelievably nice. With our own set of patio furniture and collapsible table. 3) Light-weight arm chair. Comfy, yet light enough to position at the patio for further viewing pleasure. 4) Large refrigerator with a freezer that is just 1/2 an inch taller than expected, which actually made a big difference. 5) Functional microwave. Did the job. Nuff said. 6) Location. Several diverging trails split off from our hotel to longer trails, unpaved and paved. To the shoreline of a beach and the steep cliff sides. And only minutes from glass beach (1 of 3). We were also beside 1 of the 2 bike shops as well. And the main town was on the same road only minutes away. 7) Large bathroom. It gave us the space to setup a hamper so we could tops our sandy clothing after each day's excessive activities. 8) No hassle when we needed extra towels. And their housekeeping staff is very cordial. Now for the cons: 1) Uncomfortable beds. I slept fine but the support gives way towards all sides and edges. 2) Torn screen on sliding screen door. This did unfortunately allow bugs to get in. Just a house fly and some tiny pest. 3) The bedside lamp. One tap for on for it to flicker enough to send an epileptic child into seizures. The second tap created a dimmer light that did not make up for the overall lack of lighting. 4) The bedside outlet which was a part of the previously stated lamp does not work. Which required us to use the outlets opposite of the beds and no night stand. Which brings me to my next point... 5) General maintenance and upkeep. This gets its own section because we had to make conscious decisions about the non-working parts of the room during our vacation. It was negatively impactful, and therefore did leave a negative impression on us. 6) Their provided toilet. It's round. And I demand elongated, as per today's standard. This isn't just a pet peeve, but a matter of first-world livability. 7) Toilet paper across the room from the toilet. Literally. My 14 year old and is adults were able to reach it from the toilet. But my 10 year needed us to help him each time. To the point where he had to remember in advance and tear the amount of toilet paper he'd need for whatever doody he was partaking in. The lack of full kitchen amenities isn't a fault of theirs, just a learned requirement of ours now experience how long this trip ended up being. We truly enjoyed of our stay here. Minor complaints aside (sorry for the high number nonetheless), our family would stay here again if we don't need a full kitchen. read more

Good, real good. If you want a back patio to soak in ocean air and walk to the beach from your room, this is it. No lobby coffee, breakfast, or much amenitiewise- it's like a nice motel with a lot of great ocean view rooms. The room was comfy and clean. Plenty of plugs for your various devices. For me it was a 5! Ok it isn't a luxury suite by any stretch and you could argue about minor details forever but for the price, location, and experience, it fives stars every day. The owners of this motel also own the one next door where there is a much more social environment as where at the Surf and Sand you have your own private balcony with a direct shot to the ocean, and stone's throw away (for an MLB starting pitcher) from the beach! You are located at the most northern end of the town which I find cool because I LOVE driving through this town! Rush our consists of three lights and maybe 5 extra minutes total to get to the other end of town! A ton of shops for the shoppers, lots of restaurant options and the coast. Mendocino is 10 minutes away. Yes indeed we would stay here again! read more

You stay here for the view and the beach access. The staff is also friendly and helpful. The room was basic (BYO toilet paper -- the stuff in the room is probably recycled sandpaper), but clean. The star is the view. There's a paved path that runs past the hotel across Pudding Creek Trestle to the beach access, and you can rent bikes at the next hotel up. We suddenly had to evacuate our home in Tahoe due to the Caldor fire and it couldn't have been worse timing, Labor Day weekend! And to top that we have two dogs, one is a 100 lb cane Corso which many places won't take. We had been trying to take a trip to Fort Bragg but couldn't get time away so we decided this was a good way to get away from the smoke and we needed a place to stay so we came here. They couldn't have been more wonderful to us. They were booked but managed to find a room for us, we had to change rooms a couple of times to accommodate the existing reservations but they made each time very easy. The last move they put us in the adjacent room so rather than pack everything up all we had to do was walk it over. The rooms were lovely and spacious enough to accommodate us, both dogs along with the Corso's giant crate with space left to move around. We even had a balcony for us all to relax on and enjoy the view. It would be pretty hard to beat the kindness, service and accommodations we were provided. read more

We have stayed in the past with no issues. This visit we woke up with headaches and feeling unwell, we then noticed the morning after our first night the bathroom ceiling was covered in mold. The bathroom had a weird smell the night before but we did not look at the ceiling at that time. The front desk moved us to a different room and informed us that the manager will look at the mold to see if can be refunded for the night spent exposed to mold. The new rooms bathroom smelled strongly of bleach and the ceiling looked as if it had just been wiped. I suspect it may have had mold as well and had been cleaned just before. We checked out of the hotel and the front desk did not mention the mold or any compensation. When asked they said they had given the credit to the wrong room and they will give us the credit. They only gave a credit of $45 and stated "the manager said that since the mold was able to be cleaned off the ceiling she believes this to be a fair amount to be compensated." We did not agree, due to the hotel's negligence and lack of proper room inspection my two children and husband and myself who is 7 months pregnant were exposed to mold which we are highly sensitive to. We were told that is all that could be done. As you can see in the pictures the mold is on the wall paper and in the vent, so unless the wall paper was replaced and the vent removed and cleaned, the mold was not as easily removed as stated by staff. We payed a good price to stay at a clean and safe hotel, so we thought. I mostly wrote this review to warn others with children or mold sensitivities that this hotel does not take it seriously to exposing you and your loved ones to toxic mold. read more

This location is one of the best, walk out of the hotel on to the logging road trail. It's paved and flat, easy for anyone to walk, great for bike riding and beautiful views. Having a room with a view isn't necessary. They share the outdoor area with their sister property, Beach Comber and they have a great outdoor space. I prefer this hotel to Beach Comber. Rooms are ok - nothing special. If you're looking for a nice room this isn't your place but if you're looking for a great location with decent, clean rooms this is a good place. I have stayed in 3 different rooms on their properties - all have terrible beds. You can feel the springs. I weigh about 135 pounds and when I got up from the bed there was about a 2" indentation in the bed. Additionally, they have pet friendly rooms which is always a plus. read more

Wow. Don't get a room on the first floor. Despite having easy access to the beach, It's way too noisy with the jacuzzi tub running above, and foot stomping guests. I met a neighbor in the hallway who had the same experience and said he had to put in his ear plugs! Management simply said they were sorry, and could do nothing about it. Had an amazing experience. Originally got the jacuzzi room with fire place. Room was great! Found out our shower didn't work due to some valve issues. They offered us a room at the pet friendly building with all the same features just not as good of an ocean view. Went down to go check out the room and they decided to upgrade us to the Owners Suite for no additional charge!! Above and beyond customer service. Did not expect that at all!! Wow! Such a great place! We were in unit 405 (upstairs) and had a spectacular view of the ocean. Just a few steps away there's MacKerricher State Park road if you want to bike or walk along the beach. We slept with the patio door open a bit so we could hear the surf. Very little other noise, considering there the lodge is pet friendly. One note: there are only stairs to the 2nd floor rooms (no elevator). read more

Shared on Expedia but also wanted to share here... I'd like to first say, wow! Fort Bragg is beautiful. The rooms and the view are exactly as advertised. We were lucky enough to get a Upstairs room with a King Bed, Jacuzzi, fire place and of course, an amazing view of the ocean. The room was clean, decorated beautifully, and comfortable. The staff here are very friendly and helpful. We can definitely attest to this because we locked ourselves out of our room when we were on the second story balcony without a phone, any way to get back inside and the jacuzzi filling with water. (Yikes, haha!) we yelled down to some nearby neighbors and within minutes the front office was able to get into our room to let us back in! That's something we will never forget, and everything ended up being fine. Glass beach is easily accessible from the hotel. There is a path you can walk your dogs, take your kids, etc. Also, a lot of very secluded parts if you're looking for a more romantic expirience. We found it lovely that it was not over crowded and simply had a wonderful anniversary here. We booked this hotel, while driving to Ft. Bragg through BringFido.com and had no idea what to expect other than what the reviews were saying. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived! With the sound of the Pacific Ocean a short walk away, the lodge was warm and inviting. Front desk was friendly and put us in the Sea Spray building - room 504. The layout is a bunch of cute buildings with four rooms each. Room 504 was upstairs facing the beach/ocean with a cute little balcony. The room was very clean and comfortable. We were given a little doggy welcome bundle with towels, dog biscuits and poop bags along with their pet policy. It was amazing to have the door open to the balcony all night and hear the waves with cool temps of high 40's during summer! They have coffee, packaged muffins, fruit and packaged breakfast burritos in the front office to pick up in the morning and take back to your room. read more

The Great: Beautiful, luxurious rooms laid out like small apartments. Gorgeous view of the Mendocino coast. Friendly birds play on the balconies in the morning as fog and waves crash below the moors. Magical. The Less Great: This is essentially an unplugged location. The intermittent internet ranged from 40Mbps down to 5, then lost connection every few minutes, so no streaming movies. The bed was comfortable to me (I'm 225 lbs), but those used to memory foam may find issue with the old-fashioned spring mattress. Lastly, the "fireplace " is just an electric insert, not a gas or log-burning one. read more

Perfectly sized, amazingly clean and well equipped rooms- and being able to walk right out from the patio to the cliffs/ beach was so great ( very romantic!! ) Really nice staff. Unbeatable location, clean, and friendly staff! We've been staying here for years and the location is unbeatable. The front office and support staff are really friendly. With covid and a toddler who touches everything, I brought sanitizer to wipe down high traffic areas in the room. Everything I wiped down was clean. There was no dirt anywhere! I was super impressed. I probably didn't need the extra wipe down but it brought me peace of mind. The biggest con is the parking lot is awkward. Parking is way better at The Beachcomber. read more

It's a nice hotel albeit for the price point in Fort Bragg there may be better options. Frankly if they don't have availability for the upstairs room I'm not sure that I would stay here again. Each mini building is a triplex upstairs and downstairs unit facing the ocean and a small unit facing the parking lot. The sunsets are spectacular from your balcony and that frankly makes it worthwhile for me. While the downstairs unit also faces the ocean view is it is nice and I would prefer the upstairs for sure. Rooms are a tad on the smallest side and a funky bath tub in the middle of the room separating the bedroom and the bathroom lol. read more
