Crab cakes with Old Bay aioli, cole slaw and strawberry shortcake....all so good and we enjoyed every minute of our instruction from Hanna. Having to be forced to learn to cook while living on your own doesn't suck that bad thanks to cooking classes. I've taken a few other cooking classes (Italian and Indian) here in Houston before but this is my first time at Sur La Table for a French cooking class. It is located in the City Centre right next to Studio Movie Grill. The cooking classroom is actually located in the back of the Sur La Table. The actually store is like an upgraded Bed, Bath and Beyond minus everything but the Kitchen items. They do have high end knives, pots, pans, kitchen devices and etc... (Upwards of $1,000). I'm a sucker for small kitchen gadgets that seem useless like a device to portion out pasta, automatic can openers and more. The classes are smaller compared to the other classrooms I've been to. It feels a bit more intimate as the proximity of the chef to students is relativity short. You can either view the chef (instructor) in the front of the class, in the mounted LCD screen or a 45 degree angled mirror set just in the front of the class. Once you walk in, you're instructed to wash your hands and grab a seat. In that seat you will find a white apron (located in the front of the apron is a place to hold your pen which comes in handy), the recipes that will be cooked that session, a pen and a survey/review page. You get an introduction of the chef (her past work experience), what the meaning/history of course taken (French Bistro, equipment/cookware/gadgets that will be used the different dishes that will be cooked and some other stuff I just didn't pay attention to (my mind tends to wonder). Then you get to ask her questions and she answers the questions that again not paying attention too. The following are the dishes that were cooked: Mixed Green Salad with Port-Walnut Vinaigrette - Actually just mixed together the ingredients in a bowl and whisked them together. It was very simple vinaigrette. Whole Roasted Chicken with Parsley - There was actually two styles to cook this chicken. One was to cook it in a glazed ceramic pot and one just in a regular pan (both in the oven). I did learn something new as you should separate the skin from the chicken meat to insert spices and herbs. The chicken in the glazed ceramic pot was my second favorite dish. The chicken meat was so moist and flavorful throughout from the white to the dark meat. The other chicken wasn't bad but I think I'll be buying a glazed ceramic pot because of this class. Pistachio Pistou - This was my least favorite thing made. It was so bland and it was supposed to go on to the chicken but, I didn't put any on. Caramelized Onion and Gruyere Potato Gratin - This was by far my favorite dish that night. The caramelized onions, soft potatoes and the creamy sauce made this so good. I don't every caramelized onion but when I do I'll be doing it just like in this dish. Mmmm......potato Pan-Roasted Asparagus - This was child's play. If you can't pan cook asparagus there is no hope in you ever taking care of yourself, a dog, a cat, a pig, a bid, etc.... Crepes Suzette - This was the first time I made a crepe. We did it in a pan and not on one of those crepe hot plates. It was really simple, fast and fun to do. Did I mention it was BYOB? This can only happen after the knives are put away. Apparently we all can't be adults, drink alcohol and weld a sharp object without hurting others in the proximity. I was checking some of the other people using their knives (as they diced onions) and I was deathly afraid someone was going to cut of her/his finger. I didn't bring a bottle of wine but, lucky there was a Max's Wine just across the street which I was able to cure my alcoholic tendencies. There was a 10 minute break during this class. All the dishes were very easy to make and the chef was good. She did have to stop the guy in front of me a few times to tell him you're doing it wrong. She wasn't harsh but, I did find it very comical. Everyone gets a chance to make/help in each dish. In all I had a great time and I did learn a few new tricks. You'll leave stuff with food as there was plenty to go around. Cooking classes can be enjoyed alone, coupled-up or a group of people. I've been told women find it sexy when a man cooks. I love this location, they always have a larger selection than some of the other locations. Associates are super helpful and they have about anything you can think of wanting if you like to cook. The cooking classes are wonderful although more recently we had a less than great instructor...an odd experience in that he couldn't pronounce any of the French dishes that the French cooking classes was for. Also he forgot one of our dishes in the oven...it was just not smoothly put together. I think he was a new instructor but still if you are paying greater than 75 dollars for a class...you expect some professionalism. Also usually the more experienced instructors review through the coffee machine and tea machines as you get beverage while you are in the class but he didn't review any of it. read more

Don't waste your time or money. Sur La Table is a lousy company. I attended 3 cooking classes they provided. Never again. Two of the "chefs" were nice people. One was extremely obnoxious. He got visibly mad and emotionally upset because several students including myself were not holding the knife EXACTLY like he demonstrated. What a narcissist. It is a job for bottom feeders. The place is sloppy, filthy and unsanitary. They mix food together that all the students hands have been in and then they serve it to everyone. The cooking classes are BYOB and they allow drunkenness. The evening classes are often fully booked and the space is too small, cramped and congested which contributes to the sloppy filthiness. The meals are not consistently good. Some recipes are awful. The classes are rushed. The "chefs" typically arrive at the very last minute for scheduled class start time and unprepared or 10 to 15 minuets after the class start time. They yell at you to wait outside until they are "ready". The kitchen assistant team always seems irritated and behave like they would rather be anywhere else. The cooking classes are an overpriced frivolous novelty that most people attend only once or twice because the experience is not worth the time or money. The the students who make a habit of coming back are without exception those who are desperate for social interaction they can't seem to find anywhere else. I purchased a $300 gift certificate on line from Sur La Table for my wife. I selected the option on their website to email the certificate to her email address. Sur La Table's system immediately charged my credit card but has not emailed the certificate to my wife. Instead Sur La Table began immediately harassing's both our email accounts with sales solicitations. I researched their question and answer page on their website hoping to find out why. There are several questions posted on their site from customers who were also concerned about why gift certificates they purchased to be emailed were not emailed timely. Sur La Table ignores or refuses to respond to the questions. Some questions pertaining to this have been posted for over a year and Sur La Table has not responded to a single one. Most of the products they sell are highly profitable overpriced cheaply made gimmicks designed and marketed to attract naïve customers. Some of the products they sell are good and can be bought elsewhere. Don't waste your time or money supporting such a lousy organization. read more

My daughter gave me a cooking class for a birthday present. She also took the class with me. Our Saturday morning class was learning how to make French Macarons. I had been given a macaron cookbook which was very detailed and had lots of instructional pictures and tips. However, the process seemed so daunting that I never tried to make them. The book sat on the shelf. Well, I am so glad we took this course. The class de-mystified the process. Our instructor was wonderful, funny and very helpful. We worked in groups of 3 or 4 and I really enjoyed the others in the class. The macarons are not terribly complicated to make. BUT you must be exact with all your ingredients. PLUS, you can't hurry the process. The class took about 2 1/2 hours but the time went by quickly. We were provided with tea, coffee, water and cheese & crackers to snack on. During the down time, while waiting for the macarons to "dry out", we all perused the store. They were offering a discount on all items if you took the class. Our macarons were wonderful. We made 2 types - Earl Grey Tea and Pistachio. Our fillings were buttercream and chocolate ganache. I loved all the combinations. Everyone got to take home 6 or 7 macarons. Since my daughter and I both took the class, we took home about a dozen. My grandkids loved them and all were eaten before the weekend was over. This place is loaded with everything under the sun for the chef in every household and staffed with friendly folks who know their way around the kitchen. I love to cook, I love to eat, so my youngest daughter and I took one of their cooking classes together. The chef, Ryan King, gave us fun, hands on, instruction while we prepared, cooked, and ate, avocado and smoked trout salad, crispy skinned salmon with spring bean ragu, cumin fried cod with Chipotle tartar sauce. During our 15 min break, we walked across the street to "the Tasting Room" and with a complimentary discount courtesy of Sur La Table, purchased a 2012 Pinot Grigio from Vanishing Point winery in Cali. It was definitely a fun filled and taste satisfying cooking class experience. Afterwards we did a little shopping for our kitchen with a 10% discount coupon. Right now, they are running a discount on their classes (50% off) so it is a great time to get on line, register, and check it out for a couple hours of morning or afternoon classes. I will be back! I attended a cooking class here. The store itself has everything you need to pretty much cook anything. I have no problems with the store, I just didn't enjoy the cooking class. The instructor need to get a course on constructive criticism. She talked AT us the whole time. She would call people out on their techniques, and point out what the learners were doing wrong in a very derogatory tone. It was NOT enjoyable at all. Not worth the money. read more

Took a class with my wife on Asian street food, for the most part it was an enjoyable experience. We did get partnered up with another couple and it was fairly cramped in there. The portion sizes were on the small side, but we expected that going in. We made quite a few dishes, the pace was a little on the fast side, I think we would have benefited from one less dish and more time on the others. read more

A few of my girlfriends and I took a Mediterranean Cooking class here. The class was both fun and informative. The teachers were great, making the class fun and interactive. Not too impressed with this location, but always have fun window-shopping at stores like these. I love to cook and love cooking gadgets but this store felt cramped and it wasn't well organized. If you are a frequent shopper at Williams Sonoma, you may get overwhelmed but there is an open atmosphere where you can usually see across the store to where you might want to go. At this Sur La Table location, you have no idea what is around the corner, much less what is in the store. If they insist on doing Home Depot style displays (floor to ceiling in some parts) at least put in some aisle labels so that we can figure out how everything is organized. And at the store's prices, let's just say that I keep to my window-shopping here and if I see something that I like, I am pretty sure that I can find it cheaper on Amazon.com. read more

The class was way too packed and my girlfriend and I had to work with another couple. There was 3 cutting boards only though so one person always just watched. Extremely cramped and since there are 4 people doing one dish, you normally only get to chop one thing and that's it. This is definitely not enough food either. My girlfriend and I went immediately to Straights where we got an entree each...that's how little food there was. Plus, the "main course" wasn't ready until 8:30 so we were starving at that point. The store is wonderful, but the classes... ahhh, not so much. The instructor was knowledgeable, but not effective in conducting a class. She and her assistants did much of the cooking, leaving all of us starving for something to do. Unless you were really pushy, you could go thru the entire class without picking up a single utensil. The concept is wonderful, but the company needs to re-format so that each participant is involved in the cooking, rather than one person at a table of 5 or 6 stirring while the others watch. I attended the Healthy and Delicious cooking class with my mom and sister as a surprise birthday outing for my mom. We've been on a health kick lately so we thought this class would be perfect. The menu contained pork medallions with an orange, date and jalapeño relish, chicken with white bean and kale stew, salmon with red quinoa soaked in chicken broth and shaved Brussel sprouts with Parmesan and walnuts. Let me just say, everything was delicious!! The pork with the relish was my absolute favorite and I can not wait to remake it at home. They give u a packet with all of the recipes and the kitchen items used to take home. Our chef was nice and seemed knowledgable, but when I got lost, I would reference the packet and I noticed that she skipped a few steps. The class was a little over 2 hours and we definitely didn't walk away hungry. Everything was tasting portions but we left feeling full and satisfied. The only thing I can say that messed up our experience were the gnats all over the place. The kitchen looked clean upon first glance but they really had a gnat problem. That is the only reason my review of this place is 4 stars. Other than that, everything else was fantastic! read more

We received this cooking class as a wedding gift and thought it would be a good date night - My husband and I had a great time and the food was pretty good (nothing I couldn't have easily prepared at home, though)! With that being said, I would have never paid $160 for this class if it hadn't been gifted to us. For that amount of money, I expected each couple to have been given their own utensils and meal to prepare, instead, we had to split up the duties and prepare it with another couple. There was a lot of down time for two of the four people during the majority of the class. There was a generous amount of food once everything was cooked, but for a COOKING class, I would have liked to actually cook a little more - Especially for that price. read more

I stopped in the City Centre location a few weeks ago after a doctors appointment in the area, and I had what I hope was an isolated incident there. I was in the store for 25 minutes. (I knew the time because I had just paid the parking machine and took note of the time). Nobody ever approached me, greeted me, offered to help. I could have used some help as the cutting boards I was looking at were not priced and I was intending to buy one, along with a few other items I was shopping for that day. Not one word from what looked to be about 4 staff members. There were only one or two other customers in the store. It was not busy. It was mid-afternoon on a Tuesday. I finally left, deciding that I'll go to the River Oaks Shopping Center location to make a purchase, where I have been several times and always had good customer service and the store was better stocked. We attended the "Everything on the Grill" at the Houston, TX City Center location with Chef Rick-O for our anniversary last night and enjoyed everything about it. However, our night was completely ruined when we wanted to use our 10% coupon when Antonio (the assistant manager) said my wife was looking at him "cross-eyed" when she was just walking over to meet me and discuss the casserole dish I was looking at. We will not attend another cooking class here or at any Sur la Table due to his horrible remark to my wife and devastating us on our wedding anniversary. I hope Antonio is reprimanded severely for his comment and never ruins someone's evening again. read more

Not bad, but for the $$$ cost, the overall execution was pretty poor. Attended a date night, with my date. Discovered that we were a group of 4 to prepare a shared meal around a portable gas burner. So you are not working with your date. And as only one person can be the 'cook' at a time then at least one couple is standing around watching. (It would have only taken an extra cooktop and pot to actually cook with your date.) The early part of the class was just standing and watching the instructor prepare a dessert to freeze for later consumption. There was a lot of standing around, actually. There was a lot of significant cross selling of store products. It's nice to be able to try out $100 knives, but when there is a sales message every 15 minutes, it can begin so feel like you paid to hear a sales pitch. Food quality was very good. Clean. Didn't have any fears about the sanitation. At the city center location, get the table in front, as the layout is poor and the back table doesn't (can't really) get much attention from the teacher. They really ought to have a good mirror system so people can watch teacher prep. Class ran very late and the last 45 minutes was visibly rushed. Be cautious if you have food allergies, as they did not publish the menu and ingredients prior to the class. The class I attended had both shellfish and pine nuts, very common problematic allergens, and a couple of attendees could not eat the meal. (Menu and student communications were not thought out professionally.) But again, for the first time attendee with low expectations, it is a fun event and I would recommend higher if the cost were more in line with the execution. Not for a serious student. read more
