I took a cooking class here with my company, and I enjoyed it very much. During the class, we made an arugula salad, gnocchi, and steak. Everything was explained really well, and the instructors made the experience fun and easy to follow, even for someone who isn't a professional cook. We made our own dressing for the arugula salad, and when I tell you it was amazing, I thought about that salad for days afterward. It was honestly one of my favorite parts of the class. I had never had gnocchi before, and it was really, really good. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. We also learned some great tips for preparing steak that I wasn't aware of, and I've already started using them at home. Overall, it was a great experience. The class was informative, hands-on, and enjoyable from start to finish. I would definitely recommend it to others, and I plan on coming back to try the knife skills class and probably a few other classes as well. read more

This location is located in a crowded and busy strip mall but we were able to find parking. We signed up for a 4 pm cooking class. Chef Kate led us on a wonderful 2 hour culinary adventure making roasted chicken, kale salad, a Lemon tart, marinated artichokes, and a delicious aioli. The chicken had a golden brown skin, cooked perfectly. Tasty and crispy. The kale salad had a great flavor thanks to the nice dressing that you make. The lemon tart is made first due to the amount of work and steps involved. It is a nice treat to go with the meal. The artichokes are delicious and you add some of the aioli you make and it is so tasty. Probably my favorite part. You do the cooking yourself but Chef Kate guided us from beginning to end. Happily answering all questions. She made everything so easy and instructed us the whole time.. After you take a class you get $10 off another class and 10% off a purchase in the store. This review is primarily based on the culinary/cooking class here. If you are looking to sign up for one- a couple tips right off of the bat for you: 1) signing up in store gives you $10 off/person, 2) it's BYOB! and 3) you get 10% off your purchase with your class attendance so you can really time and maximize your purchase(s) with a cooking class on a topic you're interested in! The classes rotate and it's fun to see the different options available. Overall class experience: Every "group" had their own cooking station which was nice. Even though we were only a couple, the portions were pretty consistent throughout minus the main protein. The class itself is timed well, with most ingredients prepped ahead of time, and you definitely won't go hungry. I wish the teacher spent more time laying out what we were actually doing at each step. This may be stylistic but asides from a brief overall of all the things we were making at the top of the class, it would've been nice to be more specific at each step. For the specific class I attended, I was super disappointed that most of the time was spent making the pasta sauce and the "dressing for the brocollini"????? Sauces and dressings are important but we really didn't do much actual cooking. We seared the scallops, grilled zucchini, and cooked the brocollini and basically mixed the dressings together. This wasn't worth the money nor the time in my book. Perhaps it was just a poor class selection. The instructor did share how to pick out and prep scallops and a quick knife cutting tutorial but I would've expected more education overall. The Store: They gave us about 10 minutes to shop around while the pasta cooked. I can totally respect them driving sales in the store but I would've preferred more actual cooking/education. I've been to two other cooking classes which were truly just cooking classes and not attached to a business and they were FANTASTIC so I will say my expectations may have been too high. Leftovers: they said they don't have a license to pack takeaway for you and although I didn't ask, I got the impression you could possibly bring your own storage containers? Anyways, I'm likely going to try cooking classes at other places for comparison so we'll see if I come back! read more

Just the basics! What you say? In one of the highest disposable income areas of Dallas no unnecessary widgets? That's right. I was very surprised but let me fill in the details. I cooked most of my adult life using mostly a regular dinner fork or spoon. Occasionally my mother gave me a gift of wooden spoons or the like but,I rarely used them. Then some time in the 90s when The Food Network popped up,I began paying more attention. That's when I decided to branch out a little and use a few more tools. I began a love affair with tongs and it's my second most used tool these days. So,when I'm in a store( or in this case walking past) I usually scout around for something I don't need to cook with. I told that to the nice clerk that greeted me. She just laughed and said,we've got plenty of that! However,I found her to be facetious because, I saw nothing unnecessary. I'm not kidding. My husband and I visited Sur La Table for their cooking class and enjoyed ourselves. The class lasted for about three hours as Chef Michael guided us through preparing steaks and kale with our own compound butter. He was patient, witty, and insightful. However, keep in mind that you will be standing in your feet the whole time and will have to eat your finished meal there. We appreciated that we were able to bring our own wine to enjoy with our food as well. Priced at about $100 a person, this experience was worth the money and time. It's great idea for a date night. This review is STRICTLY for the Summer Grilling class I had today. This was my second (and unfortunately will be my last) attempt at trying SLT's classes. Central Market's and The Cookery's classes are cheaper and more educational. The other SLT class I took was at the Uptown location and I chalked that up to bad luck since it was during the lockdowns....it was a tamale class that didn't even show how to make the masa and they only supplied each table a single teaspoon of salt for 3 types of tamale fillings...'nuff said.' Chef Cordelia was nice but didn't educate the class at all on how to actually grill or meat basics. We got no explanation on types of grills, grill safety or what cuts work best. We weren't even told what cut of steak we used in class....my table buddy had to ask. This class was also particularly bad because I took this class solo and these stations were shared. I think $90 should warrant people getting their own station. This is a REALLY bad idea from a liability standpoint because I'm not sure people would want someone untrained without gloves or hairnets that they don't know preparing food for them and also my taste might be different from someone else's. The chef seemed very fascinated by the fact that I attended solo...not sure why its so revolutionary that someone wants to learn to cook/pursue an interest. She moved me twice MIDCLASS (she did apologize several times) but she was way too controlling on which workstations people should go to. I understand certain placements working better for different groups but this awkwardness of shifting people around midclass could have been avoided with simply placing the name tags BEFORE class to the Chef's desired workstations. The first placement had me sharing a cutting board with someone's else's kid...the 11 year old girl was very well behaved so a non issue really but it's the principle...I paid $90 to "parent" or "babysit" someone else's kid? Then I got slotted over to another family of adults which again was fine but at that point I was so over it. The food was great, it was flank steaks (Chef gave us the tip that they were from Costco) with chimichurri, grilled corn and a mayo based dressing salad, and icecream. Great meal but again SLT really needs to refine the number of people, lesson plans and overall class formats. $90 is way too much to leave still completely clueless on HOW to grill, not getting to practice or try each component with my own workstation and me getting treated like a slot in or waitlistee with getting moved midclass repeatedly. read more

I will say that you share a prep area with another couple, but we LOVED the couple we were paired with and had an absolute blast! I've had knives sharpened at other Sur La Table locations before and brought a paring knife in for its first sharpening since I no longer own a grinder or whetstone. The company sharpens the first knife for free and it's a small $5 charge for others. Usually they'll have it back to you within an hour or the next day. In this case, I had to wait five days and got back a knife that had more than 1/8" ground away across the full blade to leave a nub where the heel should be. The grind itself is incredibly rough, uneven, and not honed. For what it will cost to replace the knife, I could have bought a grinder and whetstone. read more

My mom gifted my boyfriend a couple awesome knives from Sur La Table online (she's amazing). Since he already had a couple bread knives he decided to switch the bread knife out for a paring knife. While we weren't able to return the bread knife through Sur La Table's online system or by calling their online customer service, we were able to do an exchange at the Preston/Royal store. I was so impressed by the staff we chatted with while doing the exchange then shopping for more goodies. However, the gal who helped us the most, Roxanne, was the sweetest. Not only was she personable and friendly, she was abundantly gracious and answered the many random questions we had. If she didn't know something, she quickly found the answer for us. We were happy with the product offerings, as well as the level of service and care at this store! We came back for our second cooking class at Sur La Table. Our chef Tino was great - super friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes we were making. Very thorough with his teaching without sounding bossy. We made the Grilled New York Strip Steak with Basil Pesto, Spicy Shrimp, grilled Asparagus, and vanilla bean creme brûlée. We were taught how to make it all, even how to cook and end up with fewer dishes. The meal was delicious to say the least. Chef Richie in the house. I came in for the valentines night cooking class, which included gnocchi w pesto sauce, salad, steak, and ice cream. Definitely fun and a good class for beginners. This is definitely a basic class. The ice cream was cool, but basically he had one volunteer create the mixture and they had pre made ice cream for us. I had a good time, there are 4 to a cooking station but it's a little crowded. 3 would probably be ok. 2 would be ideal. It's just a little on the pricey side at $80 a person or so. My daughter and a friend paid $109 each for a pumpkin pie making class at the Royal/Preston Dallas location--there were 14 of us in the class--and the experience was a disaster. The Chef did not recommend any of the tools available to us in the class, including the rolling pin and the ceramic pie dish; and although pie weights or beans were recommended in the recipe provided, we had neither. The Chef prepared the pie crust in advance and we had to roll it out and put it in the ceramic pie dish for baking. Without weights or beans, we were told to poke holes in the dough with a fork While the crust baked, we mixed the filling using "pre-measured" ingredients. My daughter noticed immediately that there was a significant amount of salt and she questioned it, fortunately, before we added it. The Chef was a bit defensive but agreed to have it re-measured. Sure enough, it was WAY off--4X the amount of salt required. Unfortunatey, it looked like everyone else in the class had dumped their salt in, so their filling was unusable. When the crusts came out of the oven, NONE were acceptable. They were puffy and sunk in from the sides of the dish. Sad would be a good description of every one of our pie crusts. The Chef offered to remake all the pies, and we had to make another trip to the store 4 hours later to pick them up. Our finished pies looked ok but were not nearly as good as just about every pumpkin pie I've ever eaten, including store-bought. I kept the pie dish, but I didn't keep the recipes as I have no intention of using them--not sure if they're even accurate. The class went way over the time allotted because of all of the issues. I also thought the class was too crowded and ridiculously over-priced for what we got. I will be asking for a refund and will never take another class there again. read more

I came to the store to pick up a toaster purchased through Amazon. This new practice initially delighted since the process is almost instant gratification, getting the merchandise within 2 h of online purchase. The pickup experience however is far from favorable. The sales staff was sour, unhappy, and put upon, perhaps because of another unfamiliar task is required of them. I was out running errands, and was in my jogging outfit. Perhaps this is inconsistent with the suit and tie crowd that Sur La Table caters to... and as a result I did not feel like I was welcome in the store. And another note. The package was put in a transparent Sur La Table bag. After I got home, I noticed that the bag was heavily stapled, perhaps 10 or 12 times. I don't remember this practice when I shopped at the Sur La Table at the Galleria. Maybe a way from keeping the Amazon customers shop lift in the fancy store? I doubt this company is a good fit for Amazon. read more

Horrible experience with their cooking classes. They have literally cancelled then same class on me 4 separate times... This time, they did not even call me -- I just happened to see a credit was being processed. I called the store and they didn't even know it was cancelled - they told me it wasn't worth teaching the class since there were only a few of us registered. But these are people with family and friends who made plans to be there... and they didn't even think enough of us to let us know about the cancellation. With a Williams Sonoma just across the street I see no reason at all to go there. Absolutely no faith that they can be trusted. read more

My husband purchased a mother daughter cooking class for myself and daughter at Sur La Table on Royal Lane in Dallas. We traveled an hour to enjoy this experience and returned VERY DISSAPPOINTED due to the: overbooked accommodations, lack of materials and need to share with strangers as well as burned pastries. We will never return and will be posting this harsh truth that these experiences are not as advertised and overpriced. The associates seem helpful and patient. However, I went there on Saturday and something was wrong with their card reader. Took part funds than we tried to cancel and remove and then charge again... but the prior charge was still holding. Now both amounts are now charged but somehow declined lol:(. I told them funds to release back to my account typically take a day which it did. This is nothing new in the retail world. I told them I'd be back to again Tuesday afterwork to please hold. They agreed. So here it is Tuesday, afterwork, and drove from legacy west to get what they said was holding. Get there and everything had been put back. I just sat in traffic to get these items which by the way are cheaper at other retailers bc I just bought them from Walmart haha. Point is save yourself the hassle and buy online. Not only did they waste my time and $$$ but I had other things to pay for that day and bc of their mess up I couldn't... no wonder this store is always empty inside. read more

So disappointed with our in-store cooking class (Taste of Italy). We left halfway through out of frustration. We were barely greeted upon arrival. Chef Kate's opening joke was how she wasn't payed enough. $80 per person and you don't get your own station. Cutting boards are split between 2 people, all other food and cooking items are shared between 4 people, so you barely get to actually do anything. She forgot almost every instruction. We had to ask for directions every few minutes. She forgot to tell us to add multiple ingredients. At one point she proclaimed we were finished when there were ingredients still on the cutting board. We got no instructions for cooking-- it was all done for us without any information given. We were served someone else's meal (not the one we prepared). We weren't allowed to bring home anything because she didn't have some sort of license and didn't want to be sued. Shocked that the classes are still around if this is the experience they provide every time. read more

She reluctantly went and got them in the back. When I asked her a question while checking out, she rolled her eyes at me and answered annoyingly. Took a knife skills class at Sur La Table and was extremely disappointed. The class was overcrowded with the instructor offering to give up his station to help with spacing, but then what? No one took him up on it, obviously, and it wouldn't have solved the problem. He finally suggested for one large row to turn to their side to create more space. It was supposed to be a two hour hands-on class, but was more like a two hour infomercial and sales presentation with the instructor escorting the class to the knife displays during class time so we could pick out expensive knives to buy. The hands-on part lasted 15 minuets and we only used one knife. It was a terrible waste of money. I would not recommend this class. read more

We gave our 20 something year old son and his girlfriend a Thai Cooking class for Christmas. It was fun but could have been so much better. There are 4 people per station so not that much hands on cooking. Even less when chef Scott uses your station to teach! Why doesn't he have his own station? He didn't introduce himself or talk about the menu; just jumped in. Didn't explain that each tray of ingredients was for a separate course. Then there were the two helpers; the guy looked so angry like he hated being there. The woman kept making comments second guessing the chef. When my husband said the soup was too spicy she asked why we signed up for this class. And we didn't even get to make dessert because the rice (for the dessert) takes an hour to cook even though the class was over 2 hours long. With better organization we could have made the rice first. We will be looking for other cooking class venues in the future. read more
