Took an awesome cooking class today. We made a Raspberry Snowflake pull apart wreath and Chocolate Hazelnut Babka. The class is well taught with everything you need conveniently set out for you, and the instructor goes through each step along the way. They really make accomplishing things easy. What I thought would be difficult was really quite simple. We stuffed the snowflake wreath with cream cheese and raspberry jam, and we made homemade Nutella for the Babka. It was all very tasty and both were accomplished in three hours. read more

As I stated in my previous review for this store and the cooking classes, I've attended several over the years and have had amazing experiences as well as unsatisfactory experiences. The class that I attended on 1/30 was, by far, the worst experience I've had thus far. It was so bad that I don't think I'll be returning. The classes are not cheap and I expect to be lead by the chef and respected, while enjoying the experience that I've paid for. The instructor, I believe his name was Joe but I'm not sure because he didn't introduce himself, was condescending and sarcastic the entire class. I should mention that he only seemed to have this attitude toward me and my daughter. He repeatedly chastised us for using the trash can rather than the trash bowl at our station and just had an overall elitest arrogance that he could have left at home. He repeatedly came to our station to demonstrate things, which left us all feeling a bit cheated out of the opportunity to complete those tasks on our own. In other classes, the instructor will move around the room, visiting multiple stations for demonstrations to avoid ruining the experience for one group in particular. Besides, we were all experienced cooks; we did not need him to demonstrate to us how to cut an onion. Lastly, several of the tasks were already completed when we arrived or were fully prepared by the instructor. I felt like I was watching a cooking show, and I could've stayed at home and done that for $free.99! The mojito agua fresca was prepped ahead of time, so we don't know how that was made. The carnitas were fully prepped by the instructor. And when it came time to make our corn tortillas, we followed his instructions, but the process was not working out too well. He didn't know what temp we should be cooking them at and he made it seem as if we were doing something wrong. If we were, it was his fault because he was instructing us. I understand that the class is only two hours long, so some things may need to be prepared ahead of time, but that should be stated in the description of the class. I've worked with several different instructors over the span of time that I've been attending classes here, but he was certainly the rudest that I've encountered. Instructors should keep in mind that we are paying to come and cook, learn something and most of all, have fun. We should all be treated with respect and kindness, because if it weren't for us (the customer) your position wouldn't exist. P.S. There were also several missed "sales opportunities". Usually, the instructors demonstrate techniques and suggest cooking tools that are sold in-store. I asked why we weren't using a garlic press rather than mincing by hand and he basically shamed me for using one, stating that "he had not ever used one in his 15+ year career". Oh, well excuse the h*ll out of me! Like I said, I used to work in the call center. I know how to up-sale and that isn't it! read more

I visited Sur La Table bread making classes on my birthday and I had such a good time learning the nuances of yeast, proofing and baking bread. We were a group of 4 and we had a good understanding of who would do what. That gave us enough time to learn, bake and then enjoy tasty bread with freshly churned garlic butter. Gosh that was delicious! Chef Alisa was so bright, enthusiastic and energetic. She ensured we washed our hands as soon as we got in, showed us all the vessels and gave us a good understanding of what to expect. She was professional and very thorough. Not quite the cooking class experience we thought it would be. My husband and I received a cooking class gift certificate here for Christmas. We finally found time to go and selected a menu of late summer salad, pasta carbonara, and tiramisu. The stations are set up to share with another couple, which we thought meant you share utensils, the mixer, etc., but no, you literally only cut half your ingredients, while they cut the other half, and combine. So you better hope you're randomly paired with someone of the same hygiene level as you. We assumed in the cooking class we would learn new techniques to use around the kitchen, etc. but this is also not true. The teacher just reads a recipe out loud and you follow along. Something we could have just did at our house. The recipe itself, tasted very good, but just not the experience we thought a cooking class would be! read more

Overall very disappointed in our cooking class we did here (if you can call it a "cooking class"). We received a gift certificate to sign up for a cooking class here. We were excited to come into the "Savor Italy" class and learn a new skill or two about making fresh pasta or cooking in general. When we arrived, my wife and I made our way to our name tags. We had a nice big area to work with. There was another couple that complained about the place they were at, and the leader of the class booted us out of our spot into another spot- with about 1/4 of the space. They read the instructions off to the class, and discuss that it's a public cooking class. We were well aware of this beforehand- it says online when signing up: "you will work with other students in groups of 4, sharing workstations and equipment". When I read this while signing up, I thought to myself "oh, so we are going to be sharing some pots and pans and the pasta maker machine. No worries." We were unpleasantly surprised that we would be making the dishes as a group of four, sharing ingredients and the final dish. I'm a little bit of a freak about cleanliness- while cooking, I wash my hands as well. To me, it's a little weird that I'm supposed to be eating food that's prepared by a stranger. This needs to be explicitly stated on the website- that you will be sharing "food and ingredients and the final dishes", rather than just "equipment and workstations". Going back to my original paragraph, I was hoping for a "cooking class", but what we got was a recipe class. All the instructor did was tell us to combine ingredients to make a final dish- that's not cooking, and I could have done that at home for about a 1/4 of the price. I wanted to learn new cooking skills- how to sharpen knives, how to properly cut/handle knives. I walked out of this with no new cooking skills. The equipment we used as well was disappointing. The knives we used were DULL. I had to put a lot of force into cutting my food- which is not safe and can cause injury. I would think that they would want to give us nice items to use in the class to persuade us to purchase them in store. Finally, I am disappointed in the "Savor Italy", making fresh pasta. In the description, it states "learn the art of crafting fresh pasta dough". We didn't learn the art of creating pasta dough- it was dough that was already made for us. When I asked the "chef" while she was demonstrating to us how to make the pasta dough at home "what's the general ratio of flour to eggs," She responded "I don't really know. That's something you can look up." How are you going to lead a pasta making class if you can't tell me the basics of making fresh pasta? My boyfriend and I did the Date Night cooking class tonight where we made red chicken curry and pad Thai and it was so much fun! We were paired with a really fun couple, and our instructor/chef was super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. She was awesome! The food was delicious too. The cost is well worth it. You also get a discount to the whole store during the class so we picked up a few essentials. I highly recommend doing this if you like to cook and eat. I love Sur La Table because of its proximity to my home, and even for those not living in Carmel, the location at Clay Terrace, right off of US 31 is super convenient. The shop offers cooking classes with a schedule available up to 60 days in advance and all the equipment a home chef may need for their kitchen. That being said, the service can be inconsistent. And sometimes overwhelming. I shop here pretty regularly, again due to the great prices and proximity to my home, and 40% of my experiences leave me feeling ignored or neglected as a frequent patron. After waiting in life for almost 10 minutes without a welcome, the cashier walked away from her register without acknowledging my presence once she completed the transaction with the customer ahead of me. Luckily, someone else- who was told not to worry because another cashier was coming to the station soon- helped me after being directed elsewhere. Because of family medical emergencies, I was only 8 days past the return window when I tried to exchange. Despite escalating through 2 levels, the response was rigid and unyielding. Our Sur La Table local store is good, but the corporate office is godawful. When I purchased some defective cookware from Sur La Table, I could not return it to the store because it was not "in new and unused condition." That's a Catch-22. How can we know if a product works if we don't use it first? I contacted the manufacturer, GreenPan, and they were surly and obstinate at best and of no help whatsoever. read more

I purchased a nespresso machine at this location several years ago and had a question about whether the illy pods would be compatible. I found the surlatable and nespresso websites hard to navigate to answer this question but when I called the staff here helped me answer that question (sadly no). I ordered online, my wife sent me the wrong item so I went to cancel and there's no way to do that. I contacted "customer service" and they tell me they can't cancel because they immediately start processing the order. If I want to return the item I get to pay for shipping. This is a horrible business practice in 2024. No wonder these guys went out under. I could understand if they already shipped but I contacted them a few minutes after ordering. We came to Sur La Table for a pasta class and it was so much fun! The pandemic required us to wear masks but it wasn't too bad, even for a two-hour class. I found it a little hectic so I wouldn't recommend it to super beginning cooks as there were some things that required some previous kitchen/cooking knowledge but it was such a great time, the store employees were nice and engagement, the chef was helpful and we left with so much food to eat and leftovers! I wasn't going to write this review, but I thought it might help others navigate whether or not they want to participate in one of their cooking classes. I attended the 9am Parisian Bakery class with my sister on 4/20, where we learned to make croissant dough, croissants, croissant donuts, and kouign-amann. We first started with premade dough (which I now assume was a product from the class before us), and we learned to make the three desserts mentioned above. Going into this, I expected to be working with others, so that was no surprise. My sister and I loved working with the people at our table, and we actually had amazing teamwork skills! If you are looking to interact with people and get out of your comfort zone, then this is the style of class for you. Things, however, took a turn near the end. The girls paired with us had to leave 30 minutes before (which was fine). My sister and I were left to prep the croissant dough that we made at the end of the class -- we ended where we started. I found it a bit odd that they had us make the dough for them... but I think they will be using the labor for their next class. Anyway, my sister and I ran into an issue with our butter, dough, and folding, which the instructor made us feel like absolute idiots for by saying, "I really don't even know what you guys did" and "I guess I can try and fix this, but it's bad", and literally proceeded to simply kneed and add flour lol. I hesitated to write a review for this reason, but I paid to partake in the class. Not only that but nowhere did it say it was an "advanced" course; everyone there was also learning for the first time. The instructor wasn't the most pleasant, but she never targeted my group up until that point. She was increasingly impatient and practically rushed us all. The table across from us got the brunt of the attitude, but it still sucked to be yelled at like a child by another adult. This ended up ruining the remainder of the class. She really is why I gave it this rating. Overall, the only positive experience was the customer service at the store entrance, learning, and socializing. I plan on giving this place one more try, but I may try a different location. I want to learn without being scolded next time, lol. read more

Sometimes I walk in a store and get this sense of delight just from being there. In addition to eating at lots of places, I usually do the cooking at my home and so I enjoy going into specialty stores that serve those of us who enjoy cooking and like finding new gadgets and spice combinations to experiment with. This store is also nicely spaced with a bit more room to move around than their competitor in the Fashion Mall. And though they don't have as many mixes/sauces/etc as the other, I still felt that the place has a lot to offer (huge selections of knives and cutting boards!). I also felt this place was more welcoming than the competitor where I sometimes am not acknowledged. I couldn't help but notice the Cooking Classes room in the back which was well attended while I was browsing. There seems to something different offered every single day, so if you have an interest in cooking, I encourage checking out their website or stopping by to pick up a schedule. Classes aren't cheap, but you can target your specific interests to make it more affordable. I ended up picking up a bottle of white balsamic vinegar to go with my Brussels Sprouts and sesame seeds at home. Tried to cancel an order #SF0004039323, BEFORE it was shipped, and they refuse to cancel the order. They were extremely rude on the phone, and stuck to the "script" that "we are unable to cancel your order because it is 'being processed'" - Yet when asked for a shipping label, they say it has not been shipped yet. After explicitly requesting to cancel the order several times, they refused - even as we requested "Cecil" from the "Customer Service Escalation Management" - reiterated the same thing, and who was EXTREMELY RUDE. Even though it was "being processed" and had not been shipped yet, they could not cancel it. I requested a tracking number (which you would get if even a label was created) and could not be provided this information. They refuse to cancel an order, prior to it being shipped and now, once it is shipped (and charging $7.99 shipping) and you to pay an additional $12.95 label for you to RETURN it. This company wants you to order, and when you cancel, have you pay more to ship it back to them, and then make money on your return. This is fraud, and it will be reported to BBB and I will be issuing a charge back on my credit card, as it is an item I do not want, and they are unwilling to cancel and are forcing me to receive, even though I canceled, and I am trying to cancel the order, before it was shipped. They are purposefully ignoring my request for cancellation, in order to ship it to me and make money on the return fees. This is consumer fraud. read more

Instructors more intent on cleaning up for next class than ensuring current class being engaged, taught, knowledge shared etc. confusion and irritation between staff members about who was going to do what and how. Finished early... after learning so little with little instruction, then asked if we wanted to stay and learn knife skills... which could have been demonstrated and talked through as we did the early chopping. This review is exclusively for the poor management and lack of communication for the cooking classes. I purchased in-store cooking class as an anniversary present for me and my husband, and was charged $158 on my credit card. We reached the Carmel location for the class in heavy rain only to find that the store was locked but there were some other people waiting for the cooking class, so we thought maybe the instructor is running a bit late due to the rain. At 9:10 AM, an employee came. She told us that she cannot let us in but basically, there is no cooking class. She mentioned that the cooking class was canceled a week ago due to unavailability of the instructor and after checking the roster, she told us that someone may have tried calling me and would have left a voicemail. First, I didn't have any missed call or voicemail in the past 10 days that I did not know about. Second, I was not refunded. This should've been the first thing they should've done if cooking class was canceled a week ago. Third, the person should have tried calling the alternate phone number (which I checked was there on the roster) or tried sending me an email to make sure the message was conveyed. It's been 4 days and I have still not received the refund. I have followed up with the store over email and have not heard back. I finally called their customer service today and a gentleman told me that in the system, he does not see that the cooking class was cancelled, so he is unable to issue a refund but he is escalating this to a team so they can review my case and follow up, which I appreciate. I am not sure if there is disconnect between the corporate and store management, but a client should not have to pay for this nonsense. You wasted our time on the day of the cooking class and are still withholding our refund for your lack of professionalism. read more

A fabulous place to serve all your kitchen needs! Lots of staff to answer all your questions and offer helpful suggestions. I especially wanted an education over all the different types of Kitchen Aid mixers. The information was very helpful in making my purchase decisions. Always check out the clearance racks in the back of store. Many fun items can be found for a fraction of the cost. Also, ask about in store specials while you are there. They often have great deals happening. Check out the cooking classes. I have attended many and they are so much fun. Dinner classes allow you to bring your own wine BONUS!! Leftovers cannot be taken from the classes unless it is a make and take class. Come hungry because eating is the best part. Ask if there is a specific tool you would like to try while in class. My visit to Sur La Table was such a wonderful experience. Liz was incredibly helpful, as well as a woman who was a new employee but I unfortunately did not catch her name. We visited Sur La Table over break with our family for a fun activity night. Our dinner was Sushi. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and made aware of the 10% off we received on any products in the store for taking the class. In the class, our instructor was knowledgeable & helpful while we made our meals. Our group was mostly made of my husband's male cousins, so we were a loud energetic group. You can bring your own wine to the tasting (great money saver). They provide everything else. The food we made and ate had great portions. I wasn't hungry after. While we did not pay for the class- the class schedule shows classes mostly range $70-$85 per person. So this would be an expensive date night. For $160 and buying your own wine, you might expect some more food or snacks. Recommend trying at least once or with a group of friends though!! It was so much fun. read more

Just WOW! I am writing on behalf of the Date Night cooking class I attended this past February. My boyfriend gifted me with a class here and it was for the Bold Tuscan Flavors meal. I was a little nervous going into this experience as I was not sure the level of experience needed. I enjoy cooking and will say these classes are suitable for all! Firstly, we were given a warm welcome by our instructor, Ashley P. She was very energetic and helpful with preparing our dishes. The other staff members who assisted were also great. You are placed in a group of 4 and given all the items necessary to prepare your 3-4 course meal. Ashley was great at explaining the directions and made the process run smoothly for all. I learned a lot about cooking in this 2-3 hours (especially on making homemade ice cream and caramel sauce!). After you prepare your dishes, the staff ask you to browse the store for about 10 minutes as they set up the tables to eat. It was really nice of them! You are able to bring your own wine or favorite drink, as well. The meal we made was amazing. We made steak with Chianti sauce, pesto gnocchi, arugula salad and affogato. I had never made homemade gnocchi before and it was the star of the meal. My only complaint about the night was that you are unable to take home leftovers. We had a good bit of leftovers, but were told we could not take them home since it is not considered an actual restaurant. I just didn't like that we had to waste food that we would have enjoyed the next day. Overall, I highly recommend taking a class at Sur La Table. It is a great date night or just a new activity! For Christmas, my husband gifted me some cooking classes at Sur la Table - something that I have always wanted to do. And boy was I so excited! We decided to do a date night class and chose the Celebrating the French Quarter because we love Louisiana-style food. On the menu: gumbo, shrimp and grits, and bananas foster. So the store itself, located in Clay Terrace mall, is a cooker/baker's dream. It has anything and everything that you want - even a few things you would never imagine you would even need, but it's always fun to walk down the aisles and dream if you won the lottery, what would you buy here? (Answer - everything!) So to the cooking class. At the back of the store is a large kitchen where you take the class - if it's full you will have 11 other people with you. Our instructor was Kat - and she was awesome. Very energetic, funny, and just really fun to be around. She was great telling us what to do and answering any questions we had. In addition to the instructor, there were two other assistants who helped out, walking around and clearing away dirty dishes/utensils, etc. They already have the mise en place ready so everything is already measured out and mostly "started" for you. We did have to chop some vegetables and learned some basic knife skills. I really enjoyed making the gumbo and the shrimp and grits. This all took about an hour and 10 minutes or so. When the meal was almost done we were instructed to go back into the store while the staff finished up the meal and set up the table. By being in the class we got 10% off any of our purchases in the store. The food was absolutely delicious - and they also provide you paper copies of the recipes so you can "recreate" them at home. For dessert, we made bananas foster and learned how to flambe. Very fun! All in all, this was such a great date night option/experience. Sur la Table has a ton of cooking classes available, so there's something for everyone. I'm excited to take more in the future - even my husband enjoyed himself and said he would do more of them with me. Highly recommend!!!! read more

We did a cooking class on May 22 in the Carmel, IN location. It was the worst experience ever! First of all, they did some cooking for an hour and told us to go shop in the store for about 15 min. (of course you get a 10% discount at that time) and after 45 minutes of shopping they called us back in to tell us our chicken was still cooking. We tried the Mac and cheese and biscuits that were cold while waiting on the chicken to finish. Then to hurry us out they packed up everything in a to-go box to get us out the door!!! When we got home the chicken was raw in the middle. (fortunately we did not eat it on the way home) The most disappointing part is we emailed the corporate chef and got no response! This is a conditional review. We attended a cooking class and may not have had a typical experience. The kitchen assistant had to leave unexpectedly following a minor kitchen accident prior to the class. The chef was left alone to do all the prep before and during the class. He seemed to be rushing through the class. He was a great teacher and I would take another class from him, but for this class, it felt like we didn't get the full experience. Luckily the dinner we made was a relatively simple surf and turf dish. We would like to return for another class in the future in spite of our experience. As other class attendees started to arrive, someone decided to go to a back entrance and check for staff. Finally, after standing out in the rain for quite some time, a clerk came out to greet us, but only to tell us the class had been canceled. We never received a text, voicemail, or email. A wasted morning during this busy holiday season. We have no indication of when we will receive a refund. We may have to dispute the charge on our credit card to get our money back. read more

I've purchased a set of four French Onion Soup bowls online in my past life of adult times which were compromised by my former love. The bowls were well made as they were oven and microwave safe. I found out why Macaroons are so expensive, when I took the class to learn how to make them.. And boy are they labor intensive. They take days of planning and making before you can even eat a good one! Chef Kat did a great job at explaining the steps and walking around to ensure that you understood the process. I also took a Croissant class with Chef Geoff- it had delicious results! I highly recommend. The classes are set up so you work in a team of 4. And you get to take home a portion of your hard work. Plus 10% off any purchases that day at the store. They also provide, water, coffee, tea and a little snack. It would be 5 stars if the written instructions matched the verbal ones from the instructor. So be sure to take notes and pay attention. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go in the Indianapolis region, I always ask for a cooking class every year for my birthday. It's always a good experience to learn new dishes and the chefs that lead the classes always have a great sense of humor. My husband just did the Surf and Turf cooking class at Sur La Table. This was my first official cooking class so I don't have much to compare it to. However, there are a few things that I didn't expect. For example since it was advertised as a couples class I expected it would be my husband and I cooking our meal through direction from the chef. This wasn't entirely the case, we were paired up with another couple and cooked with them all the different parts of the meal. Our lead chef/instructor would remind us to wash our hands, then make a comment about needing to washer her own hands and not actually do it. I watched her wipe her face and nose area several times with her hands and then proceed to go around the room and touch other people's food. At times things didn't seem prepared and we had to wait while things were figured out. We made shrimp and then the shrimp sat there for over 30 minutes getting cold before we were actually able to eat it. We brought this to her attention asked shouldn't we be keeping the shrimp warm before she put it in the warmer for 5 minutes. The food itself tasted good. However, the over all experience was a bit of a let down. I expected to walk way with the recipe that we prepared. Nothing was provided. I expected to be able to cook with my date and ended up sharing (and so did everyone else) a cook station with another couple. At one point they were so far behind they told us to go shop for 15 minutes that actually turned into more like 25 and told us we would get a 10% discount. This all after the actually class starting a bit late and having us shop at the beginning. I will not be returning. I feel like for the amount of money this class cost, things should be prepared better ahead of time, provide a recipe, allow you to just cook with your date etc. read more

Mike and I redeemed a Christmas gift tonight! Cast Iron Cooking class- except no cast Iron was used.... but that was a minor issue! New pans - new cooking techniques- even a knife demo! Us late 50-somethings still picked up s few tricks! And the food!! Ooh la la! Delish! A great night out! We even bought some new pans - well played Sur La Table! 10% off one day only! Might as well! Class was 2 hours on the dot- even with a shopping break! BYOB too! read more

This place is like a dream come true. Shelves and tables full of stuff that I absolutely need (even if just once!) There truly is an an unlimited amount of kitchen gadgets - some of it is pricy but the quality is obvious. The really awesome part of this place is the service. Everytime I've come in, I've received greeting and offer for help and unobtrusive check-ins throughout my visit. That's really important for someone like me who wants to be acknowledged but left alone all at the same time. I did purchase a higher end deep fryer that was a little expensive but the quality is fantastic. Because I spent a certain amount, I received a free tote bag. Great store. read more
