Like so many other posters I did not receive a quality haircut. The vibe is great and people are friendly, I'll give them that. I requested a blunt bob with sharp and clean edges, cutting several inches of my hair off. It's just a basic bob, blunt but the edges are jagged. I had my daughter clean up the worst of it, but it's still not what I asked for. I even showed them a photo at my appointment . I've considered going back to get it evened out but I don't have faith that it will be done correctly the 2nd time around either. I'm going to let it grow a little and go elsewhere to get it done in a few weeks. read more

After having a couple not great, but not terrible haircuts here for my curly/wavy hair I asked them if any of their stylists are specifically trained in cutting curly/wavy hair. They assured me that any and all of their stylists can cut curly/wavy hair. When I mentioned a certain technique that someone previously used they said I could just tell that person not to do that. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried again. Even after instruction this person fell back on the same technique at the end and their method of layering cut all the curls out of my hair. It used to be a curly asymmetrical bob and now just looks like a short hair cut with some pieces on one side that flip out oddly. All the work my prior hairstylist did in another state for years is gone. I'll do better research and pay more elsewhere next time. read more

I love Supernova. My husband and I moved here in 2006 and have been getting our hair done with them ever since. Their music is punk rock, & Jana might sing for you in between her short stories and jokes. They listen to what you want - sometimes we bring in pictures...and occasionally you'll see someone getting a tattoo while you're sitting in the chair. I always feel like a million bucks when I leave Supernova, the prices are very reasonable, so make sure to tip your stylist (cause they rock!). My husband won't let anyone else get near his head with a pair of scissors, and Jade has got his "Tom York" style down perfectly. On a whim, I was laying in bed, on yelp looking up hair salons near my area. I told myself, the next time I get my haircut- I wanted to go to Seattle. But, this "Supernova" title caught my attention quite quickly! SO many high-rated reviews so I thought, hmm, I might as well check it out myself! Since I am attracted to high-rated places on Yelp to see for myself whether it is worth it or not. I went ahead and called around dinner time and asked if it was possible to get me booked on the same day, they said they could squeeze me in right before closing! I also had a $2 off Yelp discount which came in handy! I was excited! I wanted to get there early. But of course, I ended up getting lost on my way there (even though I live 3 minutes away)... It was RIGHT THERE!! and I still missed it twice. Eventually, found the place. My first impression with it being a salon and a tattoo parlor was an interesting sight to see. The hair stylist whom I got the pleasure of speaking to was Jana, the owner! (: I got to learn a bit of how she came to create her own place and how she likes to be different from other people. I showed her a couple photos of what I wanted, she asked me every few minutes whether I liked it or not and if it needed to be fixed. Most hair stylists, will just say okay and do their thing. Most of the time, it doesn't work out. She was on cue about making sure things were GOOD! not just okay. After being all done, she notified me that if I needed a fix-a-roo within the next couple days after styling it myself at home, I could stop by and get a quick fix without costing a penny! I did end up coming back, not because she did a poor job but because I wanted it shorter, hehe. My hair went from being mid-back length to barely shoulder touching length! She must've chopped off at least 4 inches... As for the pricing goes, it is $20 for short hair and $25 for long hair. There is no washing or styling involved. Just a spray bottle and scissors. If you want those done, it is an additional cost. I am used to paying $40+ just to get my hair bathed and styled after each cut but was a bit stunned to find her grabbing the spray bottle instead haha. Oh well, definitely didn't need the extra glam! I felt great! Got all that dead weight lifted off my shoulders! Overall, the high-rated reviews were worth it. Thanks. read more

First of all, I'm probably one of the worst customers to have as far as cutting/styling hair goes. My hair takes forever to grow which means I'm only in the salon once every 8-10 weeks. I called and specifically asked to book an appointment with either the head stylist or the owner... and to my luck, I got the owner (and on the same day I called!) The parking is a little weird, but there is street parking close by. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted immediately and since I arrived a little bit early, I was also seen early. I went over some problem areas with my last cut and made it clear what I wanted. Jana, the owner, heard my concerns, and walked me through what she would be doing. She always asked if it was okay to blend areas or add layers. I thought that was very professional (considering my last stylists didn't do that). She even suggested tips and things I could try. The cut is $20 for short hair and $25 for long hair. You definitely can't beat that price. read more

First time here Kendra was amazing!! She really listened to what I was thinking and came up with a fun cut that worked for my face and hair texture. Prices are reasonable the vibe in the shop is so fun and for those complaining about being late and not getting squeezed in because of it. The rules are posted and clear when you book online I love that that's an option. The rules are clear there as well. I for one appreciate that they will not rush you threw your hair cut just to squeeze you in for running late. I have a hard time finding a salon. Usually, the stylist just cuts my hair they way they think I want it versus how I ask them to and put me in ringlets. I came here and the stylist specifically showed me how much she would cut. She kept it simple and quick and got rid of my split ends. I like that there's a salon cat and it feels remotely homey there. The lady who did my hair was super nice and it wasn't too expensive. I like people who listen to what I want and don't assume. Loved going to Super Nova!! Everyone was super friendly and all conversed with everyone as if we were old friends. The atmosphere is so comfortable and relaxing, not like other hair places where chairs are all lined up along the two walls and where everything is white. I felt at ease when I sat in the chair and showed Jana the photo of how I wanted my hair! I was doing a BIG chop and was super nervous at first about getting it done right.. Anyway, I sucked it up and we moved along with the cut. She did amazing!!! It was as close to the picture as we could get with my hair type! I still love it to this day!! She was very personable and friendly, and understood my vague style requests and gave me exactly what I wanted. The salon itself was decorated with various interesting memorabilia and rock and roll posters. They had a friendly fluffy cat who lives in the salon (so bring your Benadryl if you're allergic). I just got off the phone with someone at this salon and was attempting to schedule an appointment for a cut and color. The woman said that actually I would have to come in twice if I wanted that- once for a "consultation", to "make sure I was ok with the price" and to put a $$ deposit down. Then I'd have to come back a second time for my actual hair appointment. I explained that I was an active duty soldier and also going to school, and asked if there was any way she could make an exception. I work 12 hour days and then extra time on weekends and nights for school, so it is hard for me to get out and do something nice for myself, let alone going to the salon twice in one month! They had great reviews, and as someone who is only in a new town for a couple years before the Army asks me to move again, its hard to find a good place to get my hair done. She said very curtly that no, no exception is made for active duty soldiers. I even offered to come in with cash or make a credit card deposit over the phone if she is worried about my trustworthiness. But no. I guess they don't need the business. read more

Have you ever had a stylist that gets tired of doing hair? They started out all gung ho and then lost steam? It can be a real problem and I've seen it happen many times. I'd like to happily report that Jade still has a passion for hair...she loves what she does and it shows. We've done lots of different stuff to my hair in the last three years: updo's, extensions, dye jobs - traditional and funky, cuts, trims....I'm always happy with the care and the quality. Jade really understands COLOR. Like, crazy color, so if you're in the market for blue or pink or your color needs correcting...she is your girl. What's changed? More staff! The luminous Graci is back after a stint in LA for movie make-up training. Levi and Lindsay have joined and maintained the quality level...and Jana is still rockin' it with super precise cuts. Last Spring, I was superpumped to get my hair bleached white and my pixie cut updated, and after reading all these awesome Yelp reviews I was certain my money was going to be well spent at Supernova. Alas, not the case. My "virgin" light-brown hair was a great candidate for bleaching, or so I was told. However, when one bleach and tone job left me with a yellow mess on my head -- which my stylist took me outside to view in all its "buttercream" glory -- I was not impressed. Sensing my disappointment, she said she could bleach it again (for an additional charge). When this had no effect, she then realized that what should have been done originally was use a different toner. D'oh! But it was almost time to close by then, and she was ready to go, so this final toner didn't sit as long as it should (or something... it didn't turn out great). After all was said and done, I hardly had a consistent-looking hair color and was left wondering if I would have remained $150 richer and with a similar effect had I gone against every internet warning against bleaching one's own hair. My haircut was equally disappointing, and I even went back a couple days later to try and get it sorted out, with limited success. I am sad to say I cannot be counted among Supernova's many fans and continue to search Tacoma for a great stylist. read more

Husband and I went here for haircuts last week. We could not have more different hair, so it was really a test of their versatility! My husband is Asian and has long, thick, dark hair. He walked out looking like a rock star, just a fantastic cut that makes me want to ... well, you know. The owner of the salon cut his hair. I was in the chair for a long time with another stylist after he was done, and I saw several other dudes get their hair cut by her and they all looked good. I was more worried about how my hair would turn out, and my fears were founded. I asked specifically when I booked the appointment for someone with curly hair experience. I have medium length wavy to curly hair. I got my hair cut and dyed. The dye job was good, but the hair cut not so much. The stylist did not seem experienced in cutting my type of hair, and she asked me several times how I wanted her to cut it (what length of the layers, and so on). As someone who has had some damn good curly cuts, I wasn't used to a stylist asking me so much - I mean, that's what I go to them for, right? To be the expert? In the end, I have triangle head. It sucks. I had her cut 2 to 3 inches off my hair, and now I am going to lose a little more because a mere 10 days later, I have to spring for someone else to make my hair NOT look like a geometrical figure. Ladies, if you have curly hair, you know this problem. It is not cute. It is not edgy. The prices were very good. So, in sum: parts were great, truly, and I hope my husband keeps going back. I am going to find someone else to cut my hair, and I would not recommend this place to other curlies. The color job is spot on. I spent a year going to Gene Juarez before this and while they were nice enough and I liked my stylist I never quite got what I wanted. Maybe that wasn't their fault and I just wasn't clear enough but this place Got It. I started my morning with a dream of getting my hair cut for under $30 at a place that wasn't the hair cutting equivalent of McDonald's. I was tired of wanting a short "man's" cut and getting charged $10 extra because I have a uterus. Fittingly enough (if you ignore the silliness of the entire situation) my dream was fulfilled on Martin Luther King Jr. day. I showed the stylist (Sorry I was so tired and totally forgot to get a name.) the image I'd been carrying around for three months or so of what I wanted in the front and another of what I wanted in the back. I figured if I couldn't explain what I wanted I would show it. Not only did she make it great she got that I wanted something I didn't have to style or put product in. I didn't want to leave with a cut that looks great with gel or something in it, I wanted to leave with nothing more in my hair than a bit of water. I wish there was a way for me to give Supernova 6 stars. Hell, 10. Screw 10..I would like to give them infinite stars! I reviewed this place last time I got my hair all awesome-ified, and I couldn't resist doing it again! I have curly hair, it's crazy, and I haven't always loved it. In fact, growing up, I really only thought it looked awesome when it was straight, so I straightened it QUITE a bit. Last year, that all changed. From the moment I sat down in Jade's chair a year ago, to now, I have been lucky enough to get a total of 3 haircuts and 2 colors..and have straightened my hair maybe twice? Sitting in Supernova is relaxing, and fun all at the same time. All of the girls know what they are doing, as Jade put it they are "hair nerds" and it shows! She is able to Kamikaze right into my mountain of crazy hair armed only with a pair of scissors, her wit, and a comb, and emerge victorious! Which works out well for all parties involved! I wish I could tell people to not be "frightened" by the "rough" exterior.. they aren't gonna give you a rainbow colored mowhawk if you don't want it, but these girls know hair and it shows! Scheduled appointment a few weeks in advance, nice people, with great hair and a lot of hype from coworkers and clients, which ended when my requested stylist was unavailable and switched me out with a well intentioned but thoroughly clueless gal. Long in front, shave the back and undercut/layer the sides.. goth punk, anime, chelsea... easy. umm, can you show me on pintrest? Umm no.. this is a edgy-esque salon with vintage bowie posters .. just look at any picture on the walls here and grab some thinning shears.... lesson learned. read more

I definitely got the impression that they made it a point to try and squeeze me in to their schedule but they were really nice about it. Even so, when I got there, I didn't feel like I was a bother or a last minute client because everyone was so incredibly nice. 2. My stylist Lindsay was amazing. It's hands down one of the best haircuts I have EVER had. I was getting bangs cut for the first time ever and was really nervous but she put me right at ease with her confidence and professionalism. She took a short look at the picture I brought and copied it perfectly. I am so incredibly pleased with her work. I will NEVER go anywhere else again. 3. All for $25!! I was so shocked my cut was so cheap. The quality of Lindsay's work was worth twice as much or more. I'm going back this weekend to get my hair colored and I know I'll be in great hands!! read more

They gave my daughter the exact hair cut she asked for when presented with a drawing of how she wanted it to look from the front, sides and back, and with no judgmental eye rolling or suggesting something else for her "face shape", etc. How many times have you said "take an inch off here", and you end up with a completely different cut than desired? Supernova is the BEST place to get your hair done! I have done my own coloring and cuts for around 15 years. But in September of 2014 I completely killed my hair--I thought beyond repair! I had to wear a hood to work so my awful disaster couldn't be seen! Someone told me about Supernova so I went there and Jocelyn saved the day!! She cut my hair in a cute bob and gave me excellent instructions on how to fix the color. A year and a half later my hair was all grown out and all the damage was gone. I haven't gone 18 months without coloring my hair since I was 15! I had a fun and funky idea for color, and she replicated it perfectly! Jocelyn you're the BOSS! I've been coming here ever since I lopped off all my luscious locks for a pixie, and have consistently avoided a bieber-bowl cut slash soccer mom 'do all thanks to the wonderful people here. That's the other thing, they're super edgy and tattoo-y, but without the scary attitude! I feel like a badass on the way in and out, but I never feel like I don't have enough ink to belong there. :) I have to say: Jade is effing fabulous. She is sincere, polite, easy easy easy to talk to, and knows exactly what I want done to my hair. And if I want to change it before she's done, she doesn't get huffy like some stylists. If you can, book an appointment with her, I can't say enough good things.
