Okay, it's really not the worst Super8 I've ever stayed in. (That distinction goes to a dump up the road in Decatur.) It's not even the worst motel I've stayed in. (That distinction goes to a joint in West Layflatte.) But I've been in better for the same price, even before my "Geezer Discount."
They fooled me after I trudged up the stairs, schlepping my stuff because there's no elevator. (And an old fart like me shouldn't be schlepping his stuff up stairways, but I digress.) I entered the room and thought it was a big suite! Wrong. The entire opposite wall is a mirror - and get your mind out of the gutter. I said wall, not ceiling. Make up your own joke.
There's no window in this room! Just a mirror, and a monochrome mural of a rock formation overlooking what I suppose is the state park on the Ohio River nearby. The room is, in fact, a small suite. There's a seating area and a small table suitable for tea for two. There's also two televisions, neither of which I watched. There's a bar refrigerator and a coffee maker that shouldn't have been taken away from it's mother until it grew some more. Single serving and not a K-cup, either. One coffee packet. One. One non-descript, non-branded, generic coffee package.
And the floor squeaks. How odd.
The room seems to have been refreshed. The bathroom has new, 4" glazed ceramic tile and there is a new, one piece, bathtub insert. The vanity counter and sink seems newer. The carpet seems recent, but the floor squeaks. The seating area has newer, genuine simulated hardwood floor and the love seat is what you'd expect, it's a sleeper.
The continental breakfast pickin's are pretty slim. Two cereals, prepackaged pastry, apples, orange and apple juice and a toaster.
The swimming pool was drier than a bag of Fritos in the back window of a Buick in Phoenix. No idea when repairs will be completed.
Overall, if you're looking for a vacation spot, this isn't it. If you're a tradesman doing a two week job, or if you just want a moderately priced sleep when passing through, it's okay. Not bad, not good, just okay. The room is clean and quiet and yippee, the air conditioner works. Just the same, I don't think Lois and Clark would be caught dead in this Metropolis motel. Even Jimmy Olson would have gone on to Paducah. It's even more fun to say than Metropolis. (Although you do want to backtrack to see the Superman stuff.)
Like I said, it's not the worst. But the Waldorf, it ain't. read more
