I would give zero stars if I could. Our loved one with Alzheimer's was here for one month. Why? Because she got out, mid-day, and no one noticed. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan noticed an elderly woman with a walker headed down Midland St. in Poway. Sunview Gardens was ill-eqipped to care for her. The owner knew she had Alzheimer's and even assessed her! She had no problem opening the gate around the perimeter of the house. It is a very small facility; the staff definitely should have been paying closer attention. In addition, we hired a third party care-giver to stay with her overnight one day/night. This person notified us that a caregiver at Sunview literally yelled at our loved one for coming to the breakfast room before it was time. Stay away from this place if your loved one needs Memory Care. read more

My 84-year old mother, who's suffering from congestive heart failure, did not have the opportunity to stay at Sunview Gardens, as she was rejected by the proprietor, Felicity. About a month ago, I got the call from mom that no son wants to hear. "Son, I can't stand up". Mom ended up going to the hospital via paramedics where it was determined that she had previously undiscovered congestive heart failure. She already had crippling osteoarthritis, which we knew, but we didn't know mom's ticker was bad. After hospitalization, she spent several weeks in a skilled care facility. We started in search of an assisted care facility. Now understand that mom does have a budget, so it's fair to say that while we can spend some money, this is not a "money is no object" situation. Also, understand that I've been a businessman for over 30 years and I do believe in negotiation, where appropriate. The party on the other side can say yes, no, or meet you in the middle. I visited Sunview Gardens and I thought it was aesthetically quite nice. Felicity seemed like a strong businesswoman, and I can respect that as a businessman. We found a room that we liked and I thought we had agreed on a price, subject to an evaluation of my mother. I also liked the fact that Felicity told me that they did not have a community fee. We got close to admission time and were working on scheduling a day and time to evaluate my mother. Felicity messaged me and told me that she could not do the price that I thought we had agreed upon. Um...okay. Didn't like that, but I didn't spend a lot of time debating it either. Wasn't thrilled, but it wasn't necessarily a deal breaker either. She asked to e-mail me a message, so we could be "clear on fees and charges". In the e-mail, she mentioned a $1,000 non-refundable administrative fee and a $1,000 deposit which would become non-refundable if mom couldn't move in by Monday (this message was received on Wednesday afternoon). These fees were new to me and had not been previously discussed. Again, I did not rule anything out, but I was caught a bit off guard. I was willing to give her a deposit, that day in fact, but wasn't loving the "non-refundable" aspect of it. Further, I had not previously seen a non-refundable "administrative fee" as high as $1,000. The other similar facilities were no more than $500 and one or more were at zero. I asked Felicity, and this is a direct quote, "Also, do you have any flexibility on your $1000 administrative fee? When we looked at other places, the highest fee that we saw was $500, and one of them had no administrative fee." Her reply? "Hi Brad, I am not comfortable with all of this bargaining on our fees. I think it is probably better to find a facility more in your budget range. As you know, there will be level of care increases in the future, should your mom decline. thank you for stopping by and seeing our facilities. Wish you the best in finding a place that is more suited to her budget". So she made the decision to reject my mother and of course I was rather annoyed by it. It's her right to do that, and it's my right to be unhappy about it. The facility is aesthetically nice. My sister wailed like a baby upon learning that my mother's admission request was rejected. Both my mother and I believe that it was a blessing in disguise. While I wish her the best, in turn, I must offer a less-than-ringing endorsement of Sunview Gardens. I respect her right to make business decisions, but I do not have to like the decisions nor the way that she makes them. I also wanted to respond to my sister's ridiculous "counter-review". I did find a nearby room with a private bath, far, far more impressive gardens, zero community fee, zero admin fee, $500 fully refundable deposit and we were told to "take our time" about moving in. I sense that mom is going to get a much higher level of care from a team that I trust. Oh, and they came down $1000 per month. That's called "negotiation", and the owner is "honored" to have my mother stay there. My sister gets caught up on on aesthetics. Cute place. Cute little dog. She had this bizarre little fantasy about visiting her mother there around Christmas. Reality check Laura, it ain't going to happen. This lady rejected your mother. There's absolutely nothing wrong with negotiation. There's absolutely nothing wrong with politely asking about fees that are plainly out-of-line with the competition. Instead my sister attempts to justify them and Felicity's actions. How's that for loyalty? As a side note, as of this writing, there are zero dementia patients at the facility where my mother is going. Only very sharp residents. One was a professor who graduated from Oxford University. And unlike the situation with Felicity, I actually trust the owner and the husband and wife care team that will be looking out for our mother. read more

My mother lived here for 9 months before she passed. She suffered from both Alzheimer's and stage 4 Lung Cancer. I had to move her from a large facility in Rancho San Diego where she was being neglected. My personal experience with the staff and facility at Skyview Gardens has been wonderful. Every person was loving and sincerely cared for my mother's well being. Each resident has their own bathroom (a huge plus), as well as the amenities one would expect in an assisted living facility. As my mother declined in health, they always kept me notified as to what was happening and my mother was happy here during her final months. It is never easy watching your loved one dwindle away but the staff here were the bright spot in a difficult situation. I highly recommend them. They are awesome. read more

I am writing this review in response to the previous 2 star review above. I am the sister of the person that wrote this review. As stated-our 84 year old mother is in a rehab facility & will now need 24 hour care after her release. There's nothing I want more than to find the best place for her & in my opinion-a few hundred $'s more is worth it for the right fit. When I arrived at this facility I was BLOWN AWAY by the cleanliness and modern appearance, as compared to the "budget type" of dumps we had been touring this was a breath of fresh air. I was promptly greeted by Felicity & her adorable dog Romeo-despite the fact that I did not have an appointment & gave little notice-even interrupting her residence bingo game. Felicity gave me a thorough tour of both houses & never made me feel rushed. I did explain that the price was slightly out of our desired price range- but as we all know you get what you pay for. After calling my brother to come right over since he lives in the area- I was excited & relieved that after so many days of searching-& another place that fell through- we had finally found a place that I felt comfortable in right off the bat. The ladies in the kitchen were friendly & asked all about our mom- (something other places never did), the bedroom available was large, had a walk in closet, a gorgeous marble handicap friendly private bathroom, & even a french door that lead out to a gated back yard for fresh air. Once my brother arrived, he agreed it had a great vibe & also loved the bedroom & the facility in general. Once the tour was over he tried to get her to lower her monthly fee in which her response was that she would need to assess my mother before committing-as it truly depends on the care that would need to be given. She did mention possibly adjusting it a bit if all went well with the assessment. I agree- we did not go over all of the costs of the deposit/assessment at that time- but I was not the one handling the money & he did know there were fees- but did not ask how much it was at that time. About a week passed-my mother had a bit of a relapse & ended up back in Kaiser-but thankfully the issue was taken care of & she was still on board to be released soon. Felicity promised me she would not give away our room during the delay, even without a deposit. Yesterday it was agreed that Felicity would come see my mom at her rehab center on Friday & then told him about the $1000 assessment fee & deposit. From what I understand-the other places we worked with had $500 assessment fees-but again- you get what you pay for in my opinion. After speaking with my Case Worker who was assisting me- I was told this was a reasonable number for a nice place. After pressuring Felicity in a manner that in my opinion was aggressive, she finally agreed to go down to a price mentioned upon our original visit- again still pending on the assessment. The lower price he referred to in his review was something HE said to her, she never committed to that price so there is a disconnect with what he states. Finally after not convincing her to lower her fees which are set for a reason, (as we are not always able to bargain our way through life as we do on vacation in Mexico), he threatened her with a bad yelp review-a threat he followed through on. She kindly- (I saw the text)- notified him that he should probably seek a care facility elsewhere that is more within his budget & at that time stated that she didn't feel it was a good fit. All of this after she has held this room for us until the assessment which of course now will never happen. She also stated to me on the phone & via text that she did not feel comfortable after the bad yelp threat as this was not a good way to start a business relationship for a loved one, & I agree & can't blame her. Despite all of this- she was still willing to listen & possibly even reconsider if I had asked her to- but with my brother's stubborn ways- I knew that wasn't a possibility & asked her to go ahead moving forward with another opportunity. Needless to say I was devastated. We are very close to discharge from the Rehab & now we have nothing AGAIN. Felicity was completely professional the entire time, simply sticking to her fees which is her option to do as it is her business that she is running. The only reason I gave her a 4 instead of a 5 stars is due to the fact that we actually didn't have our loved one live here so I cannot provide a 5 star review without that knowledge-which I am sure anyone would understand. I felt the need to defend her & her business as from what I witnessed she was nothing but kind, professional, & even willing to budge a little bit on pricing. Now my mother will most likely end up in a tiny bedroom with no private bath in a home with no landscaping or alert residents such as this one had. When our mother could no longer live alone safely, we viewed several assisted living places in San Diego to find just the right combination of comfort, services, affordability and caring atmosphere. It was immediately obvious to my family that Sunview Gardens was the best choice. The atmosphere is like a large family home with beautiful updated private rooms and bathrooms for each resident. There are community areas and activities so my mother could socialize or have her privacy according to her wishes. The staff is fantastic! We got to know them well and appreciated all the care and attention they gave our mother. We always felt she was safe and in good hands. The manager, Felicity, is a great communicator and let us know how our mother was doing and what she needed through her various stages of heath challenges. My mother even complimented the food and she was a picky eater! Honestly, I can't imagine a better experience. This was a scary time for us and Felicity and her staff made us feel so much better about the quality of life our mother could enjoy at this stage of her life. Sadly, our mother passed at age 95, but her last years at Sunview Gardens were good ones, where she made friends and lived her life with joy and dignity. We were blessed to find Sunview Gardens for my Grandma. First, the house is gorgeous. Everyone who walks in comments on how very nice, new and spacious it is. But that is just the beginning. The level of care is an unmatched outstanding A+++. Felicity and all the girls are amazing. They are very caring people and custom tailor a schedule, meals and activities to meet your family members specific needs and desires. They do everything the way you would want, maybe even better! My only regret is that we did not find it sooner. It is so much nicer than the "institutional feeling" assisted living places she had been in previously - at a comparable price. I have not had a loved one reside at Sunview Gardens, I own a medical equipment store and have had multiple clients call my company out there to get them certain items like beds, lifts, or wheelchairs. I go into a lot of facilities, both large and small, and I rarely see something with the quality level of Sunview Gardens. Both of my clients there reported wonderful care, and from my perspective the grounds are immaculate, the rooms are spacious, clean, and well appointed, and they cook home-cooked meals in a family-style environment. Every time I've been there the administrator has participated in the consultation with the client and their loved ones. She shows a lot of concern and is very aware of her clients mobility challenges, which helps me be able to find them the right product to assist them. If I had to look for a place to care for my loved one I would definitely check into Sunview Gardens first. read more

This care home is privately owned and well presented but in our experience there was a pervasive sense of greed by the management and a lack of genuine care which we found after only a short period of time. We had to pay extra for the carers to get our Mother onto her wheelchair and after a while they just left her in her bed, with her call button beyond reach. She needed to avoid certain foods and to eat at certain times but this request was ignored. We found her pills on the floor and other instances of neglect. One of the owners began to intimidate a family member who started asking questions about her care. Our Mother's condition deteriorated markedly while she was here and we moved her to another facility literally to save her life, as we later heard that several other patients had died in the month she left. The assessment made by the new care home found many signs of neglect, i.e., dirty fingers, stiffness everywhere etc. Don't be fooled, as cost and surroundings are no assurance of good quality care here. We wasted a lot of time, money and effort at this facility. Our Mother's condition immediately improved at the new care home we took her to. UPDATE: Sunview Gardens replied to my review 4 months after I had posted it. Madam, we did have our mother at your facility and everything I wrote about it is true. You did not follow through on your promises at the initial care meeting and we got her out of your facility just in time and you never bothered to return her deposit. We now have her in a modest place with much better care and her fees are 33% lower than yours. Have a nice day. read more

The Views Senior Living Community provides excellent care. The owners and all the staff are compassionate caregivers and the buildings are beautiful. My aunt stayed at the Skyview Gardens house for the last year of her life. She went from being mostly independent to needing 24/7 care as her illness progressed. The Views manages to meet the individual preferences and needs of each resident, which can't be easy, although they make it seem effortless. The transition into group living is difficult for any older adult, especially ones with the extra burden of illness, but Terry, Felicity and every staff member are warm, welcoming and accommodating. They create an atmosphere where the residents make friends easily. My aunt's illness took away her quality of life and made little things like eating and bathing impossible for her to do on her own. The owners and staff at The Views treated her with more than dignity, they treated her with love. My family will always be grateful to them. They are the best. read more

Words cannot describe the wonderful environment Sunview Gardens provided my 91 year old mother after she suffered a massive stroke. When told by the hospital that nothing else could be provided for my mother, my family and I did a frantic search for a care home that would meet all her needs. After checking out a few facilities in our area finding Sunview Gardens was a ray of sunshine through our tears. We were able to visit the same day of our inquiry and tour the home. Felicity, the administrator, was able to come to the hospital the next day, a Friday, to assess my mother, and with the assistance of Hospice, we were able to move my mother that same evening. Felicity and her staff were outstanding from the moment my mother arrived. Even though my mother could not communicate well, she knew what was going on. The staff were loving and thoughtful and encouraged my family and friends to visit every day, which we did, and we were always made to fell so very welcome. Sunview Gardens is a beautiful Assisted Living home and my family and I would not hesitate to recommend everybody there. Kindness, gentleness, caring and attentiveness were visible always and I do know my mother felt cared for and loved to the very end. read more

My aunt had been in a nearby facility on Budwin Dr. and there is nothing positive about that experience except that out of necessity we found Sunview Gardens. I wish there was ten stars because that what this place should get! I'm experienced with Assisted Living Facilities as I had both my parents in 5 places altogether & this place is the absolute best of the best!! Some of the places they were in were real nightmares! This place is wonderful! It's beautiful & clean. Felicity is wonderful & gives personal attention & tries to make it like a home. They can eat when they want & do what they want. My Mom has never gotten such good care nor been so happy & content! Unfortunately, my Dad passed in 2012 so it's just my Mom now but I'm so glad her Dr recommended this place. It's just perfect for her. Yes, perfect is the word! Thank you Felicity for doing what you are doing & taking such good care of my Mom & giving her love!
