When visiting some friends they recommended this spot! It's right by the college campus so of course there are a lot of students here. The place is eclectic and is know for its wide variety of vegetarian and vegan food. I wasn't sure how I would feel because if you have seen my other reviews eclectic isn't always my vibes because unfortunately sometimes it means dirty. Usually a good spot for food but last time me and my friends went, our sweet potato fries were burnt. My friend's shrimp and grits also were not cooked all the way. Six of us went to their Sunday brunch. Dan and I ordered from their regular menus and everyone else ordered brunch. Everyone was happy. My grandson got an unusual dish, which was a cinnamon role made into a waffle. He loved it. Dan and I got BLTs with goat cheese, fried green tomatoes, and arugula added to the bacon and tomato on sourdough bread. It was delicious. I got brussel sprouts and Dan got French fries. His fries were better. I thought the Brussels were too salty but that's personal taste. I like less salt than most people. The atmosphere was quite nice. The decor is casual. It's located near the UT campus. The service was excellent. I am disappointed that no one got our server's name so we could mention the wonderful job he did. read more

Very popular place!! The food is SO good. My 3 friends and I came here on a Friday night probably around 7pm and ended up having to wait an hour 10 minutes. The wait time makes sense with how many people were in there and the sorority event taking up the upstairs seating. We were able to get seats at the bar to have a drink/s while we waited which was perfectly great (their blackberry or blueberry mule I can't remember which is literally the best drink I've ever had). With this being said, I would HIGHLY recommend making a reservation, especially if you are coming on a weekend. Sunspot is a vegetarian friendly favorite restaurant of mine! Their tofu melt is gorgeous and so are their sweet potato fries. However, it's a restaurant you'll feel deeply out of place at if you aren't a college student, aren't dining with a college student, or aren't a parent of a college student. Avoid this place on Wednesdays at ALL costs-- it's wine Wednesday, and all the students know it. The service is about as good as it can be when they're packed to the brim, but I don't fault them for that. Waits can sometimes be 2+ hours on Wednesdays or game days, so just be prepared for a battle for a table. If you want a calmer dining experience, go during spring or summer break! read more

Within walking distance from hospital so prior reviews led me down this way. Fried green tomatoes were on point with a crisp fry while leaving tomatoes tender. Party of 5 with multiple entree and salad choices. Found the jerk chicken a little dry but flavor and toppings compensated. Burger was cooked perfectly to order and sweet potato waffle fries were well seasoned and fried nice. Salads were a bit small for price as an entree but did include quality ingredients. Waiter was attentive and conversational without over injecting himself into our table conversation. Oddly enough maybe the best bites came from Chicken tender taco and the Brussels sprouts my daughter got as a side. read more

Sunspot is a cool breezy cafe on the edge of UT campus and I love it! We stopped in for a quick bite on our way on a long road trip and were greeted by a cheery young lady and taken to a table immediately. Our server was an incredibly attentive and polite young man. We were well taken care of and never had to wait for refills or anything. The food was fantastic! It came out quick but you could tell it was fresh. This place was recommended by our teenage hotel clerk. We should have known better. This a college student hangout. If everything that goes with that is your jam, you'll enjoy this place. Extremely loud for a Wednesday evening, customers packed in so tight our wheelchair user had difficulty getting to/from our table, lots of teenagers enjoying their first alcoholic drinks. Granola and business casual vibe is how I would describe it. Food is high quality! Service is great 8 out of 10 times! Bartenders have given some of the best service I've received here. My least favorite items are the brussel sprouts..they're boiled, not crunchy, and not seasoned well. The fried green tomatoes. They were dry and the flavor combo on top was an odd pairing. Broccoli cheddar soup was awful. It was a thick paste, not soup consistency whatsoever. It also had an overwhelming taste of garlic. $5 for about 5oz of an odd paste, so needless to say the soup is at the very bottom of my list. My most favorite items are the chips and queso dip. Made with jalapeños, so it's a little spicy, but it's some of the best cheese dip I've ever had! The local burger with sweet potato fries and homemade honey mustard is my go to here! Very slow service, waited 1.5 hours for food after we ordered, and the server kept blaming it being slow on the kitchen. When the manager came out, she said the server forgot to put the order in. We had a great experience at sunspot the other day! We were checking out a place we had never been before and we were so glad to find this place! Our waitress was very friendly and welcoming and very attentive to our needs! We got the chips and salsa to start, the chips were warm and crunchy and the salsa was tasty with a perfect little punch of spice . I got the crispy tofu burger which was so delicious! It's not pretentious in any respect but offers a melange of cuisines along the lines of Latin American, Southwestern, and healthy options. The black bean burger is heavier than it may look; it was different from others that I've had in that it was on the crispier side. I liked the fact that it came with guacamole as one of the layers. The brussel sprouts were actually softer and easier to chew. The soup was awesome - not sure if they'll offer that again. After much debate, I settled on the Chicken & Waffle, which is one of my go-to favorites at any restaurant that serves the dish. The two buttermilk-marinated chicken tenders were flavorful and crispy. They rested on a savory cornmeal waffle. The muddy pond sorghum (like syrup) introduced a delicious sweetness to the mix. I wasn't as crazy about the dollop of Tabasco butter -- it's not a flavor that I associate with butter. And I think spreading it over the waffle would have made the spiciness too overpowering. Given the size of the main entree, the generous helping of home fries seemed excessive -- they took up nearly half of the plate. They were okay but could have benefited from some seasoning. They were cooked well, though. The service was excellent. I liked the modern, relaxed interior, but the restaurant was freezing -- bring a jacket if you're cold-natured. If I'm ever back in the area, I'll definitely visit Sunspot again to try out some of the other offerings. read more

Great new spot, Sunspot that is off Cumberland strip. They have a few outside tables along with good food. Burger with sweet potato fries for me were great. Service was excellent. Due to location you have a young staff and younger crowd but still good for their parents to enjoy. We will be back again soon before fall classes start up. read more
