Recently while visiting Hampton, Virginia i decided to take a visit to Sunsplash Carribean Restaurant. One of my favorite food critics, Storm Chasers reviewed them and had lovely things to say so I figured I would give them a try. I usually don't eat out for carribean because my father is Jamaican and I get disappointed. But I wasn't here. The Oxtail Dinner was delicious. More meat than fat. The flavor was powerful. Sun Splash is my favorite food truck that lightens up my weekday! The guys are friendly and the food are delicious. Their lunch special from their food truck are between $12-14(comes with a canned drink) before tax but the portions are fair. So far I've tried the Curry Chicken, Jerk Chicken, Oxtail and Beef Patty. Never had I ever had a bad meal from them. The portion is generous and I always have leftovers for dinner or the next day. Of the few Caribbean restaurants in Hampton, the food here tastes the best and the portions/prices are the most reasonable. I called in an order for a small oxtail plate (added jerk chicken for an additional 3.00). The plates automatically come with cabbage, and rice and peas (beans). No substitutions (I wanted to switch my rice and peas for mac and cheese). I ended up ordering my Mac separately for an additional charge. I got home and dug in, and the meats were cooked to perfection! The oxtail was the most tender I've ever had. Everything was delicious. I got oxtails, peas and rice with macaroni and cheese. There was ZERO FLAVOR. The most bland I've ever had. I added my own gravy in a effort to help. (No dice). Even though I've had oxtails that weren't as flavorful as I would have liked at LEAST the meat itself was good. NOPE, I'd say 65% fat. During these times of social injustice and police brutality against black people, why support a black owned business? First thing that caught my attention was they had a solid social distancing plan in effect. The restaurant was basically set up to accept take-out orders only. Orders came in a small or large except for the curry, what I wanted in the first place. This was a little disappointing. When placing my order I ask the nice gentleman if he could make a large curry chicken? He had me standby for a second, went to the back and spoke with the chef, came back and said "ok." I paid for a large order, told him I didn't want any rice (cause I'm doing this keto thang) but an extra order or cabage instead. He said ok and placed my order. A few minutes later, the lovely cook came out and ask me exactly what I wanted. She made me feel so special. A few minutes later she came back with my order. My husband stumbled upon this place because the normal Caribbean spot he goes to across Mercury Blvd was closed. This place seems to be fairly new. Anyway he said that the food was some of the best hes had in the area. He is super picky and born to Jamaican parents so if he says its good I trust him. I've been here a couple of times and I've been pleased with my meal. As a gimme for ordering Caribbean, I always order rice and peas. But lately, I've had to cut carbs from my diet and I was told that rice and peas are one of 2 sides that you get with your meal. If I'm forced to take a full carb side that I cannot switch out, this spot will no longer work for me. How can you tell people on a low carb diet or even a diabetic that they have to take rice with their meal. Give people the option to pick there 2 sides and I'll be back. We finally got to reorder this. This time we did a call ahead order and picked it up! We did order after "normal" dinner time. I think I called it in around 8:15pm. We ordered the Large Curry Goat meal and a Large Oxtail meal. Both meals came with cabbage and rice. We also ordered Mac and Cheese, but they only had one serving left, so my husband and I shared. Which was plenty. There was so much food in both those meals! The food was great! It had so much flavor and the meat was so juicy and moist, not dried out at all. We will definitely be back.
