Service- great also! Jamaicans are stereotyped as mean or lacking in customer service however I've never had a problem with directness. The young lady was kind and knowledgeable of the menu. Ambiance- good tunes, space to order and sit if you are dining in. Comfy booths and scotch bonnet hot sauce ready for you at the table ( didn't need it cause everything was seasoned so well) 10/10 for me and I shall return to try the curry chicken which seemed to be a popular item as I sat and enjoyed my meal. I got the escovitch fish lunch special and a boiled dumpling on the side.

5 Stars - One of Our Family Favorites!…read more Mystic Jamaica in Newport News is truly a family favorite! We absolutely love Jamaican and Island food, and this spot always hits the mark. My mom swears by the oxtails here, but I've switched over to the stewed beef--you get more meat, and I'm not a fan of those little circle pieces with too much fat on the oxtails. The stewed beef gives you a better bang for your buck, and it's packed with flavor. The beef patties (mild for me!) are another go-to--just the right amount of spice without being overwhelming. I also used to love the oxtail soup, but lately they've only been adding a few small fatty pieces. For the price, two or three bites of oxtail just isn't enough, even though the dumplings, potatoes, and red beans in the soup are delicious. If they fix that, I'll definitely go back to ordering it. The menu is HUGE and full of delicious options: Curried goat, chicken, beef, shrimp Stewed chicken and beef Callaloo & saltfish Grilled, jerk, or fried shrimp, red snapper, king fish, salmon, tilapia, whiting, flounder, and catfish Jerk, fried, or BBQ chicken & ribs Cow foot, jerk pork Roti with chicken, beef, or goat Stewed or curried vegetables and veggie chunks Veggie roti, veggie plates, veggie burgers Wings in several flavors, salads, and tons of amazing sides: rice & peas, mac & cheese, cabbage, dumplings, plantains, yams, festival, fries, cornbread, and more Don't skip dessert either--the cheesecake slices are big and beautiful! There was a time we stopped coming because of a cook who wasn't consistent, but they're back on track now and we're LOVING it again. The food is fresh, flavorful, and filling. A quick note: the staff may not always look cheerful, but they're great people and they work hard--so please remember to tip them well. The place is always clean, including the bathrooms, and I've never had an issue when I've visited. Location-wise, it's convenient too--right near Fort Eustis, Newport News Park, and the Denbigh area. It's across from Dodge's Chicken and near other restaurants like a Mexican spot and the Skrimp Shack. I drive in from Hampton because it's worth the trip, and honestly, I prefer it over MP's or any Jamaican restaurants in Hampton for me personally. Highly recommend checking this place out!

My order was supposed to come with mac and cheese, potato salad, and rice, but they substituted the rice with cabbage without telling me. When I asked for potato salad, I was told they were out, but no one explained the substitution or asked what I wanted instead. There was also no rice under the meat or cabbage, which is normally part of the dish. The whole plate was a disappointment, and at this point I probably won't recommend anyone else eat here. We drove 30-45 minutes from home to pick up the order because it was supposed to be cheaper in person, but instead of the usual ~$24.99 I was charged $30 with no explanation. The goat meat platter has always been my go-to comfort meal from this place, especially after long days at work. With inflation and the government shutdown, I haven't been able to treat myself in a while--and today, when I finally had the chance, the experience was completely ruined. My sunshine at the end of the tunnel was covered in rain clouds. Have a blessed day.

How do they stay in business. I waited about 45 mins for 2 eggrolls and they were terrible. I got the soul food and a jackfruit eggroll. The "soul food" had mac and cheese, collard greens and yams. The noodles were mushy and tasteless in the mac and cheese. The yams were dark brown because of too much nutmeg or allspice. They were awful. The collards were mid. The jackfruits tasted old and look re-warmed. Please do better. This is not a good representation of vegan food. It was so disappointing. The two young guys at the register didn't seem to have a clue about anything. Every question I had, they had to run in the back and ask someone. They were more interested in singing to the music that was playing then customer service. I was sick about 30 mins after trying these. beware!

However, the portion size seems to have decreased lately, especially considering the $24 price. I was asked to inspect my meal before leaving, but next time I'll be sure to lift up the meat with a fork. Unfortunately, several of the pieces on the bottom were mostly bone with very little meat. The side dishes were disappointing. The yams and cabbage tasted as though they came straight from a can. In fact, I ended up bringing the cabbage home and seasoning it myself with onions and additional spices to improve the flavor. I also ordered two beers during happy hour, and the total was $10. I later changed my mind about the beer, but the pricing still seemed a bit high for happy hour. On a positive note, the service was quick and efficient. The restaurant could benefit from some upgrades to the dining area. At this point, I don't see myself eating inside the restaurant and will likely continue ordering takeout. Overall, while the oxtail and rice remain strong points, it may be time for me to explore some of the competition in the area

Pre-pandemic, this was a place where we would have dine-in visits with friends of ours from a social group or just the two of us. It was probably close to a year since we last appeared so it was time to stop by. Similiar to the past visits, I called in our orders. They greeted me promptly when I walked in where there was only one table occupied. Quick and easy. For our orders, which both served as dinner and lunch for work at our respective sites, we chose their Cubano sandwich with our usual sides (fries for myself and plantains for Sophia). As always, the sandwich was pretty good packed with ham and roasted pork, pickles, cheese and mustard (both had no mayo). I would've liked for more fries in the box, but I had enough for both servings. La Pena Horeb came through once again. You know I'll be ordering takeout from here down the road. Till next time :)

Ok today after church because I enjoyed Palms Jamaican food last Sunday, I stopped in again today. I ordered the Curried Goat dinner, and 2 beef patties, rice and beans and potato salad for sides. (got my chicken wings from the Chinese place next door) sorry they are bigger and cheaper! Curry goat taste like beef chips with thick whitish looking gravy. Not that rich dark gravy West Indian food usually has. Potato salad last week was great, this week potatoes were hard and undone, it had green peas in it. What? Do they use cream of coconut in the rice and peas cause I didn't taste it. What was the worst was the beef patties. The outside was crunchy and the inside was dried up mush instead of ground beef. There is no way on God's green earth they could have been made on the same day. Yesterday at best. Hmm, another one bites the dust.
