I really really love the garlic kale salad here at Sunshine's, but I wish the service was just as impeccable as the food. My friend went to the restaurant to place an order at the counter for us - cause I was craving the garlic kale. When she ordered, there was a huge bowl of garlic kale in the screened deli area behind the counter. She ordered the 3 salad combo and I got the Spicy Black Bean Burger with a small side of the garlic kale. Well.. she paid and ended up getting most of the food - but an hour later was still standing there waiting because they ran out of garlic kale and told her they would go back and make some. How long does it take so long to make garlic kale salad? Instead of informing her, they just had her stand there and wait. Then after the hour had passed, they told her that they didn't have the ingredients to make it and would substitute the order for another salad? Say what? When we ordered - there was a ton of garlic kale. They should've packaged it for us since we had ordered and already paid. They waited until the black bean burger finished cooking and then by that time, the garlic kale was gone. Most businesses would notify you and remedy the situation with a replacement - but they completely ignored her and didn't tell her. This is bad business practice and I wish they cared enough about customer service to notify the customer of the issue in a timely manner. Seriously, no one should have to stand there for over an hour for a to-go order - especially not for a salad! They should know ahead of time if there is an inventory issue. She was so turned off by them, she will never be back. To make matters worse, the Black Bean Burger had zero sauce in it, which made it bland and super dry. I've had this before and someone forgot an ingredient when making it. No offer of reimbursement for the now cold food cause of the kale salad mishap and no offer to make things right for wasting our time. I love the kale salad so much, however, I decided to place an order online for it a week later. I did this twice - the first time they had my salad and Beyond burger packaged and ready for pick-up at the correct time. It was easy and I was able to go in and grab and go. The Beyond burger was juicy and delicious - way better than the black bean burger I had the previous week. The 2nd time I placed a to-go order, I only ordered a large garlic kale and they didn't have it ready for me at the time of scheduled pick-up. The girl told me to wait and then finally decided to go package the kale salad for me herself. Why she didn't do that in the first place, beats me! But I think they totally forgot about the order cause she didn't have a ticket and then asked me if I already paid. Seriously? How do they run a business here? They need to fix the issues and become more consistent with their service. Someone needs to make sure orders are managed in an orderly way. If you love garlic, this garlic kale salad is the best thing - it's so garlicky it burns! But is it worth the hassle to come here and get it, knowing you may waste precious time for them to just package it into a container, that's up for you to decide! read more

I had a late lunch last weekend here. It was a rainy day and the parking lot was full. If that's the case when you arrive your only other option is nearby street parking and a short walk. At the counter, I ordered the vegan spaghetti that comes with a kale salad and cornbread for $8. I was concerned that it wasn't going to be much food and so I added a bag of veggie chips for another $1 along with a bottled tea. The food was delivered to my table about 10 minutes later. I knew when I ordered the spaghetti that it was whole wheat pasta and therefore the taste could suffer but this actually wasn't bad at all. The soy crumbles in the tomato sauce imitated ground beef and was good in taste. The serving size was large and the only recommendation I can make for improvement is to be able to add some vegan cheese on top. The lemon kale salad was also very good and I enjoyed it. Finally, the cornbread serving was large and therefore filling with a typically good cornbread taste. For $8 this was actually a lot of food that I enjoyed eating and that I would order again. The meal was a 3.5 but I will round up due to the value. As vegan food becomes more popular and more restaurants serve it people who try it will like it. read more

I had never purchased anything in store but wanted to try the gelled Sea Moss, the cashier which was Sunshine's granddaughter, suggested the "Sunshines surprise sea moss gel. Love this place! Have been to Sunshine's a few times and have tried a few of their sandwiches as well as their cold salads. Everything taste fresh and they have a variety of unique items to choose from including beyond meat products. In addition to great food they also sell a wide range of hard to find vitamins and supplements in their store. I picked up the last jar of Irish Sea Moss and glad I did, it can be tricky to make on your own if you've never done it. The only suggestion I would make is to allow salads to be a side option rather than fries other than that everything else is great. Love that they have a hand washing station too! Coming from Austin, I found this to be a very unusual place. I was in Houston for work and I had decided to go to Sunshine's for lunch as it was within proximity to my hotel. It was in an isolated location with only a Public Storage next to it. It is a vegan restaurant but it also didn't feel like it. There was a no paper menu and also the staff didn't seem very approachable. The food was okay though so points for that!! I ordered the Vegan Enchiladas with a side of pinto beans and it was definitely above average. There is also a health food store inside for anyone wanting to buy groceries. There is a sign behind the counter when you order that says the wait is long because everything is made fresh. Tasty vegan food. Location is next to Guy's Meat Market, and you can easily miss it going west on OST. Parking is confusing with Guy's lot facing the entrance of Sunshine while Sunshine's main lot is on the other side. The restaurant does not have windows besides the door. There is a sign that prohibits you from bringing in outside food designating the restaurant as a meat free zone. There are other signs around the restaurant that instruct patrons with the preamble, "Friends,". I notice the counter workers greet every female that comes in especially the little ones as Sunshine. Oh as for the food. I didn't see any dairy or egg products on the menu. There are no sodas either, just assorted tea and juice products in the cooler. I had a soy not chicken po boy with a side of sweet potato fries. The po-boy was greasy like it was real meat although it looked like fried sliced loaf cuts.
