Alaska farmers markets are small as is this one but it still deserves 5 stars. It has vendors who…read moresell flowers, wild honey bee products, many various vegetables and all are freshly picked and tasty! The prices are reasonable and supports local farmers. It's also perfect to stop here midweek (Wednesday's only) if you end up missing the Saturday market like I will. The Northway mall farmers market is another one that is open on Wednesdays which is also worth a shot. I am a sucker for fresh produce and Alaska vegetables are to die for. The day long sunlight up here in the north creates some of the sweetest carrots and crisp vegetables of all climates I've experienced. You must try a farmers market and their carrots if you're here in the summer.

I grill these in my special new cast iron oyster skillets! 2 dozen Oysters are a weekly staple during the summer when the markets in full swing. We then went and grabbed some super huge radishes from another vendor. Oh yeah a bread that's super high quality that Leila can eat Calugine from Zoi Food for life it's special for wheat sensitive people and vegans. Then to Beach Tribe Sodaworks for a 4-Pack of Jamaican Kombucha - Perfect with Gin - A Kombucha Gin & Tonic - Hello. All vendors take cash, some take credit cards so bring some of both. There's always something good there!

The rest of the lot was amusement park rides. There was a booth to dress up and take photos with Alaskan huskies, ulu knives, handmade candles, fur, photography, jewelry, and my favorite: Christmas ornaments made of Alaskan clay. With it only open a few months, I would expect more vendors to be out when the weather is nice. I honestly was pretty disappointed in how little they offered. There were a few decent stands, but the prices seemed to be pretty high compared to what was being offered and seemed to be more geared towards tourists rather than folks living in the area.

The feel isn't that of "kitschy touristy keepsakes", as the downtown market often is. These are all local businesses run by locals. In addition to lots of fresh produce, there are also lots of hip new businesses serving up great eats. And they have live music. They've also got "kiddie tables" for the little ones. Although this is a small farmer's market, all you need are a few stalls with excellent stuff & you have a simple salad, a delightful dessert or a versatile vegetable fricassee. There's stalls with fine flowers, healthful honey, a parade of pickled items like garlic & other pickled delicacies, marvelous mushrooms, various vegetables & flavorful fruits. Most take credit card. I learned about pink as wells as lion's mane mushrooms. And I know that $2 for a bunch of orange beets with vitamin filled beet greens to boot is a showstopper. Don't even get me started on $3 giant leeks. I could eat just those with toast points. While it may not be for you, nobody gets more excited or fanatical about a festive farmer's market.

A lot of the produce was super-sized and this worked out because even though the items were often priced by weight, there was a max price per item for many of the veggies. Some of the most memorable items were several colors of giant cauliflower heads, a massive daikon radish, and big bunches of greens.

And the convenience of fresh produce coming to your door every week can't be beat, I've even added local milk deliveries (though I wish I could automatically have it come each week without having to add it each time). I get the harvest box which is perfect for my family of four. My amazing 7 year old daughter decided to become a vegetarian June 2012, since she has gone meatless the rest of the family only eats meat a couple times a week (I could probably give it up but my husband never could) so we go through a lot of produce. I also enjoy that the produce is so varied. There are so many things I've never tried and I love receiving items I wouldn't regularly buy because then I get to try new things. For example, I never buy any squash besides pumpkin and I've bee having fun preparing a variety of squash recipes. Also, I had never heard of Rainbow Chard before getting these deliveries and it is the most beautiful green and I love making Rainbow Chard Alfredo, sooooo good! My experience with Full circle deliveries has been awesome! Though I do think they could replace the box with reusable totes. I get milk in a cool pack I have to return each week, I wouldn't mind doing the same with totes.
