First time at Sunshine. I honestly do not eat at a lot of restaurants on Memorial Drive but a friend told me Sunshine was good. Service - didn't get a greeting when we walked in, the lady was sitting in a chair at the register, there was one guy In there sitting down waiting on this food so she was not busy. They had a few fish dishes on their menu but had NO fish at all that day (weekday). I mean they were out of everything seafood and they were out of sorrel. This should have been a sign to leave but I settled with a small oxtail meal. They do open the box for you to see your food before leaving, no corrections or complaints after you leave. Well, I wish I would have took a closer look at the "plantains" bc it was absolute mush! It looked so terrible, I thought it was fat from the oxtail... they literally served spoiled plantain on both of our plates, I tasted it & it was definitely rotten. I love plantains when I eat Jamaican food & the fact that it was rotten was very disrespectful. The oxtail was small, not a lot of meat but the flavor was decent although I would have preferred more gravy. Rice & peas and the cabbage were average. As far as the inside, not much sunshine in there, just get it Togo. Oh! And the health score was 81 which should have been another sign to leave. There are better Jamaican restaurants to visit. read more

My boyfriend and I were frantically looking for a place to go because the other place we were going to was closed. Luckily we found this place on a Sunday! I didn't get a pic of his so here's mine lol. *I ordered goat curry with rice and beans, cabbage and plantains. This meal was bomb! The rice is the only thing that was on the dryer side lol (totally okay). But the goat was seasoned SO good. It was so tender snd juicy! Had real meat on them. My first bite was amazing lol. The cabbage was really good too! Everything went so well with the eachother other. The plantains were the best thing there in my opinion. That is the best fruit on the planet! They were so ripe and caremalized. I had to get more... hence the second Bag. *the price is even great. For the amount of food! Love it and definitely going back! *Covid friendly and everyone wears masks read more

I had a craving for Jamaican food and found this spot riding down Memorial Drive. I didn't have time to read the reviews prior to coming so we literally took a chance and I'm glad we did! Omg that jerk pork was soooooo good. Never have I ever ordered that from any other restaurant but wanted to try something other than jerk chicken or curry chicken. My first choice was the fish but it's prepared to order which takes about 25-30 minutes which we weren't in the mood to wait. All seafood is prepared to order so I know for next time to call ahead for that dish if I'm in the area again. The pork was so flavorful and it was right amount of spice. And it's plenty of meat! Rice and peas, cabbage and plantains ran me ten bucks which ain't nuthin at all. I can always count on Stone Mountain and Decatur to provide the best island food. read more

Just Bad Food. I stopped by this place today after reading the reviews and was willing to it give a try. It's located in an old shopping center at the intersection of Memorial Drive and N. Hariston Rd in Stone Mountain. My first warning sign was the foreboding curb appeal outside the store looking in. The doors and windows did not look very clean. The second warning sign, there was no one in the place when I went in. No problem, right? The third warning sign, which should have been the last before I turned right back around was the Health Inspection Grade of 81. So, all the warning signs were there to let me know this probably was not a good idea. But I'm always willing to give the benefit of the doubt especially to local businesses. The cashier appeared to be cramping really bad, so she was not in the best mood. Yes, cramping. She was holding her stomach and appeared to be in some discomfort. Anyway, I ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas. Good lord! the chicken was dry and mealy. The jerk sauce was very vinegary and just plain wrong. This was my first time having really bad jerk chicken. I hope the owners read this. You need to do much better. Shame on you! read more

Listen... it's hard to find authentic Jamaican food these days. I am still a fan of Sunshine after many years and with my return to GA. Manish water... mouthwatering.... Finger licking good. I rarely make it home before drinking some. GET THE BOWL! Order early, they will sell out. Stew peas... ample big tasty pig tail! YUMMY!!! So good. I look forward to the stew peas days almost every week. Oxtail... last time I had it, it didn't seem fresh. I don't know if I posted that here already but it almost tasted sour. Service... listen, you don't go to Jamaican restaurants for good service. You go for good food lol. The ladies however are nice but don't answer the phone!!! Also, they stop answering anywhere from 30 - 60 minutes before closing. read more

Sooo delicious! Fantastic food. We tried the jerk chicken, curry chicken, curry goat, and oxtail. All were amazing. The meat on each was super tender, and I loved the richness in particular of the oxtail. Even the "small" portion of one of the main dishes is very generous: more than I could finish in one meal, for sure! Especially with the peas and rice and cabbage-- the cabbage in particular is super flavorful and stellar in it's own right. However, if you are looking for a lighter option, I might recommend the salad instead. COVID-wise, this place is takeout only, all staff has masked, and customers have to have masks on too: I observed this enforced, which is awesome. Happy to come back and support a great establishment that seems to be taking this pandemic seriously! read more

I've tried plenty of Jamaican Restaurants and Sunshine definitely sits at the top of the list. My first visit to this place was okay. It was really packed and the wait times are kind of absurd but I believe it was only one person in the kitchen and one taking the orders so I understood. I waited patiently to see what the hype was about and boyyyyy was the wait worth it. I would wait until Jesus comes back for that Oxtail. I'm also normally not a fan of Jerk but Sunshine's jerk holds just the right amount of spice. The dessert is amazing as well. I had the carrot cake and the flavors of that cake were just a lot to take in. It was moist the icing was creamy. Just downright delicious. I would definitely come back and wait until my bones bleed to get some more of this good Jamaican cuisine. read more

Bomb!! The combo plates are the TRUTH!!! Try their curry goat/oxtail combo with rice n' peas and curry goat gravy. Hubby loves their escovich king snapper fish with rice n' peas with cabbage ($15 and cooked to order). Paid like $38 for everything which included a drink too, so great prices! The slices of cake are $2.70 each. The carrot cake is ok. Icing wasn't cream cheese. The "black" Jamaican rum cake is good but I prefer mine with icing and they don't have it here. I'm about to try their key lime cake. I'm a baker so I know good cakes lol. Trust me tho, their food is straight bangin'!! Always good in the hood' right off Memorial Drive. On Saturdays they're open til 10:30pm. They sell red pea soup on Saturdays too. If you never had it before try it. Only $4.00 for a small. The dumplings in the soup sets it off! Check it out! I go to Red Hills for the jerk chicken but come here for everything else...lol this place is definitely in my top 3 favorite Jamaican places. Ok now I gotta go finish eating lol.. read more

Great food.. sometimes it's a miss but mostly on point everything I go. Eat here and try

I was so excited this place was open because I went to two other Jamaican spots and both were closed (grr). There was a little bit of a line but it didn't take but 10-15 minutes for me to receive my order after placing it. There were so many things on the menu but they have a sign advertising combo plates so I decided on that. It comes with two meats, two sides, and plantains (and now that I think about it I never got my plantains. Im going to have to call and I'll give an update later). I ordered the curried goat and oxtails with a side of rice and peas and cabbage. I also wanted a beef patty but they only had chicken so I settled for that. When I got home I couldn't wait to eat my food and it did not disappoint! Delicious and good portion size, especially for the $19 I paid. I was able to share with my dad and still have leftovers. The goat was tender, the oxtails were meaty, the gravy was flavorful, and the chicken patty was flaky. So many good things. My dad is even thinking about going tomorrow to get some more! Fyi they do charge a service fee if you use a card. read more

I bought a small jerk chicken with steam cabbage rice and peas . Food was ok at be best 6/10 . The rice and peas had a heavy coconut flavor slightly over whelming, the steam cabbage and plantains was good. The jerk chicken was dry. I had worst and I had better. The jerk sauce was way too sweet and the consistency was like a gravy instead of sauce. I usually get oxtail gravy on my rice she told me they don't do that and I have to buy it on the side which was $1.10 and it came in a very small container. I was literally the only person there and it took me 20minutes to get my food and my meal came up to $15. I definitely don't think it's worth that . It should be 12 definitely won't go back read more

Red snapper was awesome Visit sunshine other day and ordered the stew whole Red Snapper Fish rice & peas with cabbage everything was very fresh and the whole snapper was crispy on outside and very moist and tender on inside, sauce with veggies that was placed atop of fish was very tasty and lite weight not heavy and overpowering which made the fish retain its crispy texture - a little pricey but worth every penny. I could not eat all of it, did finish next day and was still good. Didn't receive my plantains with both orders, I noticed when I reach home, but didn't take away from my enjoyment of the food. Also ordered jerk chicken - was good as well. Think so far the stew fish is my favorite. In pic I broke head off before I could take the pic :o) A lot of meat in the head too. LOL!!! read more

Seafood is made to order, delicious and fresh, worth the wait. Portions are a good size as well. Whole brown stew snapper and curry shrimp were incredible. The curry sauce had okra and carrots and the brown stew peppers and carrots, rice and peas covered in well seasoned sauce. Would give five stars if there was a place to wait until food was ready. read more

It's hard to do Jamaican food right, and Sunshine Jamaican definitely puts up a good showing. Unable to decide between jerk and curry chicken, staff cut me off and said you can get both in a combo. Well give it to me then. My combo platter was #4, Curried chicken + Jerk chicken ($11.75), which comes with your choice of white rice or rice and peas, steamed cabbage or side salad, and plantains. I ordered the white rice, cabbage and plantains. I also ordered one beef patty ($1.80) I'm not going to lie, when the server told me my meal was going to be $14, I was a little annoyed, then I picked up my to go box and that thing weighed about 3 lbs, so in terms of portion, you 100% get your money's worth...they slam that take away container full of food that easily becomes lunch and dinner. The beef patty was a diced (almost ground) beef, cooked in a cornmeal pastry. The flavor is slow to reach you, but as you chew on it, you get that nice slow build up of heat and season that makes the patty stand out. I'd get it again. The Curried chicken came with four pieces of thigh meat, each of them having a nice amount of meat on the bones. Flavor was good, chicken almost fell off the bones and the curry wasn't overpowering. Keep in mind this was a half portion. The Jerk chicken was a little spicy, came with two and a half pieces (leg meat), and equally as tender/fall off the bone, but the flavor for me personally wasn't as good as the jerk chicken. It seemed like you got more meat from the curry chicken too. The cabbage was nothing special, and the plantains were kinda soggy, but I did like how they ladeled the curry sauce over the rice, and unlike other jamaican restaurants, there weren't a ton of tiny bones to crack your teeth on as you eat the rice/sauce mix. A nice touch too that they kept the jerk chicken sauce in its own compartment, away from the curry sauce. Located almost at the corner of Memorial drive and Hairston road, Sunshine shares a lot with other restaurants including checkers, waffle house and little ceasars, so there's a decent amount of parking. Getting out onto Memorial drive is fairly easy, but Hairston road can be a little more challenging depending on traffic. Customer service for me was just fine, and service was quick, getting me my food in under 10 minutes. Solid spot for a LOT of decent food. read more

That two star is for the food only. The food is good and authentic, but the attitude from the owner is horrible. First my family has patronized this place for at least the last five years. My step-father is Jamaican, so this is where we went he didn't feel like cooking. A year ago they introduced a Rewards Program and from the start it's been an issue. The introduction for signing up is $5 off your next purchase, except the coupon never comes. They also send coupons to your email periodically. In the emails it always saids you don't need the coupon and can show it on your phone, via the app. Today I downloaded the app, ordered my food and went to pay. Except I was told by Carol, that I couldn't use the app to redeem the coupon. I look around to see where there could be a sign posted about this, as they have sign posted about all their rules, and there was nothing present. I asked to speak to the owner because I knew it was out of Carol's hands. He proceeds to be rude about the situation and telling me, "You can't use the coupon, unless you have it printed! We use a third party company for the Rewards program and they send out those emails! That's how this is solved!" I stood there in disbelief. You seriously think that I'm going to pay full price for both meals, when you never disclosed the information prior to ordering? Wow! With that attitude from him on the hunt for a new Jamaican restaurant! It's sad that you can't support the businesses in your own neighborhood. read more

Best authentic Jamaican food in the area, hands down. Their prices are fair and the portions are generous. I had oxtails with rice and peas, cabbage and plantains: dank, dank and more dank. I am really picky about my Oxtails, and this place is on point- every piece was tender (not gristly at all) and succulent. Whoever cooked them knows what they are doing- all the flavors were in perfect balance. Often times, people use way too much thyme, which in my opinion, kills the whole meal. Eat here. Now. You won't be sorry. And get some homemade lemonade. It's ridic. read more

My husband is from the Virgin Islands. Each city/town we visit he is on a quest for Great West Indies food. I order the stew fish... FAIL....fish over cooked. Fish was cooked the night before and microwave. The peas and rice was mostly rice it too was microwave. My husband enjoyed his oxtail and brown chicken but agree with me on the rice. The fried plantain was microwave and rubbery. We were just back in Virgin island two weeks ago so maybe we are a little bias. We drove 30 minutes to this location from our hotel room for over cooked food. I could not recommend this place. read more

Laaawwwwwwwd 'ave mercy *Buju Banton voice* This is the best Jamaican food I've had since moving to Atlanta. Despite the dreaded drive on 285 from Brookhaven, every bite of this food is worth it. I've lived in NYC for half of my life and Florida the other half. Trust me when I say the quality of this food is up there with some of the restaurants I've been to in Ft.Lauderdale and Queens. To say it's the same as yaad? No. Nothing is like authentic Jamaican food you eat from the roadside or by the ocean in JA. I've had the snapper and it was somewhat of a wait but you can't rush food! My hubby had jerk chicken twice there and it was amazing. The red pea soup is only served on Saturdays so don't make the mistake I did and come on a Thursday (today). I will make my way back there on Saturday with my long belly! I don't personally know any employees but I HAVE to defend attitude from ALL employees who work at Jamaican restaurants, and this one, after tonight. *Start Rant* I witnessed some foreigna ask the worker "what does rice and peas look like?"....wouldn't you look at a menu or the large poster above you????? The customer told the employee she didn't want the oxtail after ordering it but wanted chicken instead. The customer threw a fit when she was informed that they ran out of curry and fried chicken and then to make matters worse, when she DID get her replacement order, she started to eat ON the counter in front of everyone, rather than at the table. I'm thinking "AYO,WHOS MANS IS THIS?" I salute the young woman for having so much patience with this customer...If I were the worker, I'd throw her damn plate off my counter, onto the floor and call the boss man to escort her out. She had the audacity to inquire about their "Help Wanted" sign... I would laugh in her face. I know this place is in the hood but if you dine in or have to wait for your COOK to ORDER meal to come through, have patience and expect to see some nutty people walk in! If I could bring Sunshine closer to me, I would! *disclaimer* I did not purchase the bun and cheese here. Those were purchased at Royal Caribbean Bakery...another one of my favorite spots in Stone Mountain. read more
