The Saturday before Thanksgiving was the last day of the outdoor market. It will be closed for a few weeks before the indoor market opens in the Wompatuck State Park Visitors' Center. The winter farmers market runs from January through March and then we look forward to the outdoor market reopening in April. Given our beloved 4-season climate here which is not always conducive to a year-round outdoor market, I feel lucky and pleased to have the indoor winter market solution. Our farmers market has gotten more well-known since I last reviewed it so it tends to be busier and more crowded. It can be annoying to wait in line for things but I am pleased it is thriving, and serving more people with quality produce and other products. Each year seems to bring more offerings of not just local food and food products but some lovely handmade crafts.

I know its great to support the locals so I don't mind shelling out an extra few bucks to have locally grown items. There were about 3 veggie vendors all around the same prices. I got a small watermelon for $3 and a melon for $2. The bakery items were limited to cookies at $2 each or bags of 6 for $7 at another table. Then small loafs of bread. The pie vendor had a huge selection, I found the sample I had a bit syrupy though. The jelly person let me sample some mixed berry jam that was very tasty. For $6 a jar I might go back for some when I run out. There was a nice couple selling potted herbs for cheap. They also gave me some great tips on why some herbs grow stronger then others. Other booths were honey, fresh fish, and some home made items. Plenty of parking near the wharf.

The 2014 season started today, and there were about two dozen interesting, local vendors out in force. We picked up some vibrant, organic veggies and fruits from the two crop farms represented there, but there were all other kinds of other interesting tents, too: herbal soaps, local honey, maple syrup, etc.! It's a little pricey, yes, but you're supporting local businesses, and most of the stuff is good for Mother Earth. We arrived about 20 minutes to close, and people were already closing up shop.

Tree Berry Farm is near my in-laws, so it was a quick trip down the road. Thankfully, parking is in a grass lot off the main road, and you aren't expect to play Frogger with fast-moving cars on RR 123. There's lots of signage showing you where to park, where to pick up a bucket, and which sections are open for picking. Even at the height of blueberry picking, with lots of families around, there was still plenty of space to spread out, and lots of blueberries to go around! Jamie and I picked for about 15-20 minutes. If you're going to be there longer (i.e., if you have small kids), bring sunscreen and water! You pay at the same place you pick up (and return) your bucket. At $4 a pound, it can't be beat! We got about 2 pints worth of blueberries for that price. And the wonderful thing is, the flavor is far superior to that of the produce department at your local grocery store. They lasted a long time, too! For tourists and locals alike, blueberry picking is a must, and I can't recommend any place other than Tree Berry on the South Shore. It's the most organized and has the best blueberries anywhere!

Tomatoes as red as they were are generally very easy to cut and very juicy. They were good but not the way that summer tomatoes usually are; not really sweet or very juicy. They were more like tomatoes that are shipped where they can't be soft or they'll be damaged. I definitely recommend purchase of his vegetables, though! Everything else was great!! I'll definitely be back even though it's about a 20 minute ride.
