The 2014 season started today, and there were about two dozen interesting, local vendors out in force. We picked up some vibrant, organic veggies and fruits from the two crop farms represented there, but there were all other kinds of other interesting tents, too: herbal soaps, local honey, maple syrup, etc.! It's a little pricey, yes, but you're supporting local businesses, and most of the stuff is good for Mother Earth. We arrived about 20 minutes to close, and people were already closing up shop.

It is just so great to have a farmers market in this part of Dorchester!…read more The market is held from 9am-12 noon every Saturday, May though October, in the parking lot at the A.J. Wright plaza in Fields Corner. Get there early if you want the best selection, as they run out of the most popular items pretty early. I love fresh peaches and pears when in season, so I try to be there at 9am on the dot. No frills-- no wandering minstrels or artisan cupcakes, just bins of fresh produce and a few tables set up for weighing and paying. There seem to be two farms stands operating here... a family run farm called Berberian out of Northborough, and a Vietnamese farm stand. I don't think they take credit cards, I have always paid cash. They do take WIC and food stamps, and a large portion of the customers pay with these. The produce is fresh, delicious, and seasonal of course. The corn is amazing. The beets are amazing, with glossy gorgeous greens still attached, $2.50 for a bunch. The leeks are also incredible and so cheap... $1.50 or $2.00 for a bunch that would cost you 6 bucks at Shaws. Fresh herbs of all kinds, squashes, big juicy tomatoes, green beans, carrots, onions, potatoes, chard, collards, etc etc etc... we buy all of our produce here in the summer. Last weekend we went home with 45 pounds of produce, for about $50 dollars. Can't beat it.

There were two produce vendors and a booth in which the Boston Cyclists' Union was tuning up old bikes for free. One vendor had great Asian and other ethnic veggies cheap--for $2, I bought enough Caribbean spinach to feed an army. The other vendor (the guy who told me he'd been coming for 35 years) had his produce on the ground in giant tubs. No frills, but effective. His corn was stunning and I got a nice head of lettuce, some carrots, a peach and a nectarine for short money. Definitely worth a visit if it is local for you and if you are looking for farm fresh at an affordable price. If you want the latest amazing baked goods, jams, jellies, honey and gourmet delicacies galore, this is not the place! This market is located in the Park Street Shopping Center parking lot. I was the first to review it and and I used the address of McDonald's which is the closest business in the shopping center to the market. Listed hours are Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon, but the Asian veggie vendor was already closing by 11:20 a.m.--so come early. The acceptance of credit cards may vary depending on staffing; when I was there the person with the card machine had left.

Antonio is a really nice guy, and the young lady weighing things and taking the money was also very nice. The only thing that I was disappointed with was the tomatoes. They looked wonderful, and I bought several of the largest ones that they had to make caprese salads with. But I was surprised by how hard they were to cut. Tomatoes as red as they were are generally very easy to cut and very juicy. They were good but not the way that summer tomatoes usually are; not really sweet or very juicy. They were more like tomatoes that are shipped where they can't be soft or they'll be damaged. I definitely recommend purchase of his vegetables, though! Everything else was great!! I'll definitely be back even though it's about a 20 minute ride.

Of course, we made it on the last night...Labor Day weekend (Friday), we were able to make it part of a trip to Marshfield so it was great. We made the trip....traffic was not to bad, which was a huge bonus. Upon arrival, we noticed that it was a very busy night at Langwater...tons of cars parked in the front of the farm in an orderly fashion. We were lucky enough to get a spot near the entry and make our way to the Farm. Immediately, we saw two lines....one for pizza and one for drinks (at the bar). The lines moved quickly. The stafff at Langwater has a real great process of getting each order in and moving on to the next customer. Obviously, they have done this before! The pizza that we ordered as "excellent". The wood-fired ovens were roaring and pumping pizza's out quickly! The bartenders at the bar were just as quick. Plenty of help and everyone moving through the drink line was awesome to see. Music was being played with hundreds of families and friends laying around on their blankets and beach chairs, which made everyone happy and the vibe relaxed! I would love to come back here when the farmstand is open and to try some chicken wings and ice cream....which I decided not to try this visit. I am guessing they have a lot of delicious items for sale! Price: very fair Crowd: very busy Vibe: Family ....easy going Service: awesome Will we be back? : For sure

Tree Berry Farm is near my in-laws, so it was a quick trip down the road. Thankfully, parking is in a grass lot off the main road, and you aren't expect to play Frogger with fast-moving cars on RR 123. There's lots of signage showing you where to park, where to pick up a bucket, and which sections are open for picking. Even at the height of blueberry picking, with lots of families around, there was still plenty of space to spread out, and lots of blueberries to go around! Jamie and I picked for about 15-20 minutes. If you're going to be there longer (i.e., if you have small kids), bring sunscreen and water! You pay at the same place you pick up (and return) your bucket. At $4 a pound, it can't be beat! We got about 2 pints worth of blueberries for that price. And the wonderful thing is, the flavor is far superior to that of the produce department at your local grocery store. They lasted a long time, too! For tourists and locals alike, blueberry picking is a must, and I can't recommend any place other than Tree Berry on the South Shore. It's the most organized and has the best blueberries anywhere!
