The Saturday before Thanksgiving was the last day of the outdoor market. It will be closed for a few weeks before the indoor market opens in the Wompatuck State Park Visitors' Center. The winter farmers market runs from January through March and then we look forward to the outdoor market reopening in April. Given our beloved 4-season climate here which is not always conducive to a year-round outdoor market, I feel lucky and pleased to have the indoor winter market solution. Our farmers market has gotten more well-known since I last reviewed it so it tends to be busier and more crowded. It can be annoying to wait in line for things but I am pleased it is thriving, and serving more people with quality produce and other products. Each year seems to bring more offerings of not just local food and food products but some lovely handmade crafts.

First of all, it's right off Jerusalem Road in Cohasset which is only like the most beautiful street in the world. Never been? Do yourself a favor and get in your car now and take a drive! Anyway, back to the farm. They have a few horses and chickens and goats, oh my. They have lots and lots of walking/hiking trails and you can bring your dog (though I shouldn't have mentioned that because now I've given away one of my secrets of places where you can take your dog that not everyone knows about). It's a functional vegetable farm and you can stroll through the grounds and see everything growing (when in season). You can also purchase all kinds of fresh produce here like lettuce, spring onions, heirloom tomatoes (and heirloom tomato seeds and/or plants as Emily mentioned) etc. More often than not, no one is there and you just take what you want and leave your $, a la the honor system. This is the kind of place that makes you forget you're only like 20 miles from a major city and really, where else can you find a farm that is across the street from the Atlantic ocean?

The 2014 season started today, and there were about two dozen interesting, local vendors out in force. We picked up some vibrant, organic veggies and fruits from the two crop farms represented there, but there were all other kinds of other interesting tents, too: herbal soaps, local honey, maple syrup, etc.! It's a little pricey, yes, but you're supporting local businesses, and most of the stuff is good for Mother Earth. We arrived about 20 minutes to close, and people were already closing up shop.

So I went ahead and bought a container of strawberries and they were so fragrant and delicious but half of them were all mushy and squished to the point that it wasn't edible it was gross and very disappointing because it was over $8 for a quart of the strawberries.

It seemed silly to buy a whole quart of firewood at the end of the season, so we've been going to the grocery store. The wood is sub par, wrapped in environmentally unfriendly plastic and pops A LOT! So when we were driving past this place in Milton, we gave it a shot. They are lovely and will load firewood into your car for you. I went on my way home while wearing a suit, heels and formal coat, and the gentleman helping us out would not let me touch a log. Their wood burns very nicely and is the perfect size. There are very few pops and the wood is high quality. We recently relocated to the Boston area, and had purchased wood from another source in NY. This wood is far superior to what we had previously ordered and we plan to order it in bulk next year. Bonus points, this quaint store has nice freshly baked bread, flowers and gourmet goods as well as some staples. Only thing I would recommend is adding some Iggy's baguettes. We used to order directly from Thatcher Farms but stopped getting delivery a few years ago. I still like to grab a few from here or the Fruit Center Marketplace in the square every so often. I really enjoy their chocolate milk (they sell Hatchland Farms NH & Thatcher Farms), but today I saw that they had coffee milk too! Thought that was interesting but didn't end up grabbing... I must try it next time ;) Aside from the milks, they also carry popular beverage brands like Polar Seltzer cans, Oatly! Oatmilk, Welch's juices, Newman's Own, Tropicana, etc. They also sell bread, sandwiches, snacks such as cookies and candy, and fresh flowers that are displayed outside! In the fall, they have a bunch of pumpkins for sale & in the winter time, they usually have some Christmas trees you can buy! Very cute place & highly recommend if you're in the area.

We were surprised to see that large containers of strawberries were $1 and blueberries were $1. We also ended up getting a box of 9 mangos for $5. Hay market is the best deal in Boston. I wish I started going sooner…read more I spend so much less on groceries now and try to exclusively buy my produce at Haymarket. Is the produce super fresh? Not necessarily. But it is still 1000% worth it. I just want someone to share in my enthusiasm about what a good deal it is. I make green juice in the morning. When I shop at Star market my juice would cost up to $5 per day. From haymarket it is like a dollar a day. And who cares if I'm not using the most pristine vegetables. It's gonna get obliterated in my blender and I'm none the wiser.
