Went here for lunch. The interior is super cute with 50s memorabilia and red booths. The place has a clean feeling. The staff are friendly. I had a grilled ham and cheese sandwich ($8) with a side salad substitution for the fries ($2 for the sub). The food was good but nothing I couldn't make at home. This was especially true for the sandwich which used regular-sized supermarket bread. I was also a little annoyed that I had to pay for the healthier fry to salad substitution. Why not make it easy for people to eat right? My girlfriend got a cheese burger which was competently made but didn't really possess any "over the top" qualities. Just an average cheeseburger. Sometimes there's nothing wrong with that. The fries were thin (like McDonalds) but totally over-salted. They also got cold quite quickly. All-in-all a competent diner at fair prices. Don't expect to be wowed by the food, but it is definitely serviceable. The inside is cute and themed, but not enough to draw me back when other, better diners exist. read more

Like any other basic millennial girl, I love brunch. Even if I have to wait 30 minutes to be seated to have it - which is what happened with my friend and I. We didn't really mind and neither did the other people in line, the servers are really nice about it though. Their menu has something for everyone, but I ordered the BC eggs benny (came with smoked salmon) - though thinking back I should've tried a different benny because they let you mix an match. My friend ordered one of their omelettes with rye toast - both dishes came with hashbrowns and a little fruit salad. The eggs were cooked nicely, hollandaise sauce was on point and had a sufficient amount of salmon and onion. I love that their fruit salad had almost every bit of fruit in there! They have decent prices compared to other breakfast/brunch places in Kits, and they aren't overrated like others too. I'd definitely come back with a group of friends, but maybe head over earlier on the weekends if you want to get a seat - otherwise, be prepared to wait. read more

Went on a Sunday for brunch. Expected the lineup so wasn't surprised to wait for a table almost thirty minutes. As the crowd lightened up outside we stepped inside to see where we were on the list... You're next they said... Then somehow they called another group to a table a few minutes later and we noticed that somebody had turned the page and we'd been overlooked... I used to love this place, today I came back for brunch. The eggs Benny and home fries were great as usual but when I got to my fresh fruit salad, I realized the fruit were quite old and moldy. I put a blueberry covered in mold in the center of my plate and showed the waitress. She didn't seem surprise at all, no apologies or anything just said 'ok I'll let the chef know' and that was it...we still had to pay for the full meal even though we didn't get to eat the fruit salad and the worst part was the reaction of the waitress as if it was no big deal. read more

Yes it is a diner and they really seem to identify with cultural icons. We stopped for breakfast finally and would describe it as average meal and experience. Our two dishes were OK, but nothing beyond mediocre. Our server wasn't too quick to come by after we were seated, but eventually returned to take our order. Sure they say the beef patties in their burgers are made from sirloin tips and hand-pressed etc etc. but they just don't taste any good. Actually they have no taste whatsoever, like they've not been seasoned at all. Same thing with the turkey sausages, not to mention they're sliced into flat long pieces which are really kinda odd. Charbroiling them only managed to increase their appeal by like 5%. Scrambled egg whites came out like a tri-fold wallet. I can go on and on about the food but what bugged me the most is the sight of 'em cooks taking a smoke break right beside the restaurant's front entrance and in full view of all the patrons inside. the bc benny they serve here is arguably the best eggs benny in town. i'm a fan of trying new things, but i have never once managed to come here and NOT order the bc benny. the hollandaise sauce that they make is to die for. add a side of homefries too, they are just the best (especially dipped in the leftover hollandaise sauce). the milkshakes here are pretty good two - you can mix flavours together, so i usually go for the butterscotch espresso combo. the place itself is super cute - a legitimate 50's style diner with jukeboxes and all the appropriate decor. i imagine it would be a good place to take kids as well because of the fun ambiance. read more

Wow, bad food and bad service. For the record, my husband and I were regulars until this morning. The food has never been the greatest (except they do have great bennies) but it's close and quick. Today I ordered the fruit bowl and it was absolutely disgusting. The blueberries and watermelon pieces were ripe to the point of rotten. The apple and pear slices were mealy. I poked around trying to find the pieces of fruit that were edible and soon gave up. I never complain at restaurants but when the server asked how the meal was, I was honest. He talked with the owner/manager (?) and I figured they'd take it off the bill. Nope! So he brought over the owner/manager (?, i hope not). Some bald guy with a ton of attitude. He told me that the fruit was fresh and that they checked every fruit bowl. Yeah right. To add insult to injury he then told me that he would have a fruit bowl himself for lunch and refused to take it off the bill. He escalated an easy to defuse situation into a full blown we're never going back to this place deal. I guess not all managers have training. Makes me wonder about what else they drop the ball on. So, in short, now we're never going to go back AND we're going to tell all our friends who live in the neighborhood. read more

This is 1950s-style diner is my favourite place for bennys. I think their secret is the delicious, high quality Born 3 eggs that they use. Those bright, sunny yellow yolks put the sunshine in this diner. Plus the service is good and the decor is kitschy cute. read more

I was utterly let down on one of my recent visits back to Sunshine Diner. We were seated closest to the kitchen yet we got our food almost 2 hours later. I am not exaggerating. The waitress would only "check" on our order every 20 minutes or so only to find out an hour in that the cooks "lost" our order. The table next to us that came half an hour after us got their food probably 15 minutes after they sat down. I was really angry but I'm not the type to cause a scene so was just going to mention it when the bill came. Before I could say anything, the waitress said our orange juices were on the house (mind you, there were only 2 of us). Really? just our $3 or so OJs? This will be the last breakfast place I am coming back to in a while. read more

cool place inside.. great 50s diner atmosphere with your classic offerings of betty boop, elvis and marilyn pieces of decor throughout was in the mood for breakfast at around 11am on a thurs morning so this place definitely hit the spot offered your classic breakfast fare.. opted for the benny's.. you can mix and match as well.. one had shrimp and asparagus.. the other was a veggie one with nice big slices of avocado. also had the 'big' pancake on the side which was really just 2 small pancakes?? that was weird but tasted good! they also have milkshakes that come in like 12 different flavours and you mix and match.. will defo have to try one next time! service was great as well! read more

I've been to the Sunshine Diner many times over the years and have always really enjoyed the experience. Food is good, but expensive. We went there over the December holiday and it was busy but they clearly weren't prepared to handle the volume. My only complaint about this place is the service. It's pretty consistently a gong show. It doesn't seem that the servers have designated sections and we are always waiting for coffee. They could use a bus person on to help with the volume. Still one of my favourite breakfast places but I would like to see the service improve. read more

I'm taking this place off my favourites list due to increasing prices and now decreasing portion sizes... you can get better value at many other local diners. I didn't recognize my benny the other day. They've changed their menus and the way they plate the food makes for smaller portions that left me hungry after my $15 breakfast. If it ain't broke don't fix it they say.. and this is exactly why. Maybe they're getting ready to franchise so they're trying to be more like Denny's or Cora's? I've had brunch here once, and if I had to, I would go again. What won me over wasn't so much the food (the waffles and crispy bacon were lovely, don't get me wrong) but Sunshine Diner has a retro vibe that I have yet to find anywhere in Vancouver. When I went there, they were playing Looney Tunes on their television, and it was such a great throwback. Not surprisingly, the place was then packed with families and kids out for brunch, which made me and my roommate (20 year old college kids) feel a tad bit out of place. I went there for brunch with friends. It took awhile to be seated, but it was pretty busy so I guess that's understandable. The wait staff were friendly and the atmosphere was fun. On the breakfast menu it said that all breakfast meals came with homefries and fruit, so I ordered the French toast and a friend ordered pancakes. When we got our meals, there was no homefries or fruit. We asked our waitress and she said those to meals were n e/ception and that we could order them as add one, but it would cost extra. She apologized and said it was a typo. We didn't push the issue, but I wish we would have. How hard is it to put a sticker on the menu to make it more clear? We were both disappointed. I wish i can give this restaurant 0 star. I called this place today morning to reserve a table for me and my friends. The staff who answered me was rude. I asked him if it possible to have the table with one or two baby strollers? He said no you can't bring stroller inside!! I asked him what is the maximum number of the stroller u can have inside? He said ZERO stroller! Even though i was there before with my family and my baby with the STROLLER! His sound was like ..you are not welcome to come! We happened to be shopping on West Broadway and were walking back to the car to drive to Sophie's for lunch when we walked by Sunshine Diner. The sidewalk cafe was open and it looked so inviting on such a beautiful day so we decided to take a chance and eat there. Kelley was our waitress and she is a great ambassador for the diner. Her enthusiasm for the food was refreshing and her service was great! I decided to take her suggestion and order the burger. I haven't ordered a burger in a restaurant at lease for a couple of years. It was delicious, tasting like an authentic barbecued burger made with real beef rather than many the taste like they are filed with cereal. The salad and fries were also delicious.
