This was my second time at Sunsets, and both featured lots of fun. I guess I'd call first to ensure that I wasn't just a lucky gal, but both times I was here they had a band playing and people dancing. The setting at sunset is stunning and obviously name-worthy, and I have to admit a family picture at sunset is gracing my Christmas cards this year hahaha. When there is a problem with the food service, and a patron asks to speak with the chef or kitchen manager, then that employee should come out and talk. The paper sticker on a lemon wedge was not a catastrophe, but the failure to communicate was insulting. read more

This isn't the first time I've come here, although it will be the last. We came for lunch and sat outside, my guy and I both ordered the fish and chips and a bottle of wine. The waitress came out with a different bottle of wine then I had ordered, one that was not on the menu. We've had this wine before and when I asked why she didn't bring out the bottle I ordered, she said she couldn't remember which one I ordered. We said OK not really giving it a second thought however when our bill came the bottle of wine was much more expensive than the original bottle I had ordered. In addition to the wine, the fish was not fully cooked, and the fries were mushy. As we discussed the meal, we remembered the last time we were here. During our last visit, we ordered glasses of wine, and when the bill came the charge for the glass of wine was higher than what was written on the menu. The waitress pushed back; however, we didn't pay the extra charge, and advised that they really need to update their menu. Based on these two visits, I don't trust this place and there are many other restaurants in the area where we can go and not feel like we're getting ripped off. Decided to take a risk and ordered a broiled small whole lobster with a baked potato, oh well my bad. Not served warm so I sent it back. The cook came out and apologized as their oven was broken and he cooked it in a salamander. Had I known this I would have not ordered it in the first place. Water logged is a good description. As far as the baked, not hot either. Drawn butter a fail as well. Bottom line - Sunsets is a relic from the past and should simply give up the ghost. We had a 5:30 reservation. for 4 people. We ordered drinks and an appetizer....about an hour later, we got mussels in marinara, not garlic & oil. Then, about 30 minutes later we got our soups. My salad arrived 45 minutes later..we questioned the hold up and was told food would be coming. Two of 3 meals arrived 30 min. later Tuna never arrived. Read the reviews and was very apprehensive but gave it a try. Met friends and saw a great band on Saturday night. Much to our surprise the food was so delicious! All food came our quickly and hot! My crab cakes were delish and not all bread crumbs. The shrimp cocktail were fresh and large, Cesar salad cold and crisp! Our server Clair was so kind and extremely sweet, very attentive! With a group of hungry fishermen, we embarked and headed straight for the restaurant. Melissa was our waitress, she was very charming and helpful. The band playing was horrible and very noisy. We would not have minded the noise but the singer lacked talent. We ordered four tuna tacos and two Jersey burgers. The food was amble (none of us finished our meals) and very delicious especially after spending six hours fishing. If fishing out of Neptune go here if you are hungry. read more

skip this place when you are in town. I stopped in for an early evening dinner because it was the closet place to where I was staying. I was accompanied by service dog and requested to sit outside, I was refused service. I was told the management has a new policy of "no dogs on the weekends" I explained that she was a fully licensed and trained service animal and protected under the federal ADA act. I then produced her identification card and paperwork. I was again told "no dogs are allowed on weekends" - I choose not to continue with to push the issue - I don't want to be anywhere she is not welcome but did advise them to explain to management that they are opening themselves up to litigation. I will never come to this place again and will advise my friends and family to pass it by as well. There are several really great places nearby that the locals say server better food and drinks. read more

I ordered the $27 crab cake on special. they must have waved the can of crab over the crab cake because it was just moist seasoned bread crumbs with powered spices added. The food has gotten much better over the last few years. You can't go wrong with any of the sushi and the cod bites are excellent. The service is why I keep going back. Raven is the best bartender around. She makes the most amazing cocktails! Julie is the sweetest most attentive server. She makes us feel like we are old friends. We request her every time we come. Tonight I dined with my wife, daughter and niece. When we ordered drinks I asked the waiter about a Groupon I purchased (see pictures). After eating he told us the Groupon wasn't acceptable on Friday night. I read the fine print and don't see any restrictions for when it may be used. We paid and tipped 20% and left. Sad thing about Sunsets is I like the place. Their salads and sushi are among my favorites and the outdoor seating is relaxing. Had a reservation tonight (Friday) for my mothers birthday at 7. When pulling into the parking lot, I was turned off. It's a gravel parking lot and not organization whatsoever. Cats were parked however they could which was pretty frustrating. While waiting for the rest of the party to show up, we had a couple of drinks on the patio/outside bar. If rating only on the outdoor bar, I would give it a 5. The ambiance was a typical outdoor bar, but there was a live band that was pretty good, and the bartenders were friendly enough. You can tell this bar was filled with locals which was nice to see. The margaritas they made were good and prices not bad at all. Once we were ready to be seated, we were brought right away to a table on the patio. For a Friday night the restaurant was not busy at all which had me a little worried. Our waitress was very friendly and prompt. We ordered a few appetizers (fried clam strips, chicken fingers, and pot stickers). They were all pretty good, no complaints. For dinner, I had the BBQ burger, and others had the surf and turf, snow crabs, and the steak sandwich. First, they cook the burgers and steak how you ask, maybe a little under (which for me isn't an issue). The burger was pretty good, fries were good and the crab was good. The filet that came with the surf and turf (ordered by my dad) had a fishy taste to it, which was weird. The lobster tail that came with it was very small but tasty. Our server also brought out a piece of peanut butter pie (really good) with a candle and a few other servers to sing happy birthday which was really nice. Overall, for 5 people for appetizers, drinks, and dinner, it was a nice meal. No major complaints or show stoppers. The view from the bar was nice. Not so much from the dining area because of all of the boats docked there (which is also cool if you have a boat). I would recommend for the outdoor bar area. Not sure if I would go out of my way to eat here again. Also, one drawback is someone had a medical emergency which there and was in the ladies room. As a result they were letting all the women in the men's room and not letting the men go in (which is fine I get that). But the problem was the staff was super rude about it. We were off to the side waiting and were told about three times to "move out of the way" (when we weren't in the way?). Guess some folks can't handle stressful situations but it was pretty irritating. read more

The food was okay, but certainly not worth the money. The service, however, was terrible. After bringing the drinks out to the wrong people (not a big deal), they forgot to put our appetizer orders in entirely. So after waiting for 30 minutes our entrees unexpectedly came out. When the appetizers came out AFTER dinner, they shorted us 3 oysters (we ordered 18 but only got 15). Imagine our frustration when the check came out and included a mandatory 18% tip (we were a group of 7). The final nail in the coffin was, after all of their mistakes, they tried to charge us for a drink we didn't order! I would not recommend this place. If you are choosing between having a 20-minute wait at Klein's or getting food immediately at Sunset's, I would choose Klein's! The only great thing about Sunset's is the view of the marina because you get to see the boats and the sunsets. The people are nice there and the service isn't that bad. What they should really improve on is the presentation of the food and the preparation of the food (especially when the scallops probably have sand in them). Also, they really need to clean the inside of the restaurant up! I would rather smell the sea of the marina than the inside of the restaurant! Was excited for Sunsets to open for the season and see what new things they had done to the place, as it has so much potential! Once again so disappointing ! First off, they painted the inside, but didn't clean, cobwebs everywhere! You mean to tell me you or the painters couldn't dust while they were up there? it's disgusting and there was a big dead fly directly above the inside bar. They did not however paint the bathrooms nor clean them, once again disgusting! The burgers look delicious and the plan was to eat but no way, if front of house is that dirty what does it look like behind closed doors? service was nonexistent, the security guy/bar back was left on his own behind a packed bar and manager would jump in when she wasn't running food. I get it that places are short staffed but get a system! Work your way around the bar and make eye contact!! He stsued pretty much in one area and it took about 25 minutes to get drinks. Some people left because of this. Its a shame this place could be fantastic if they would first give it a good scrubbing and keep it neat and clean and be consistent with service and drinks! Sunsets is a great place to enjoy the view, hear live music and eat good food. I've never had a bad meal... And I really like the lobster bisque. They used to have taco Tuesdays that were always good too. Hope they still do. The bartenders are nice too. Def one of my favorite places. :) read more

Went to Sunsets on a rainy day for lunch. Due to COVID we are apprehensive about going out. They pleasantly accommodated us in the pouring rain. Our server, Claire, was fabulous!!! So much fun to talk to and laugh with. And great service!!!!! I had the New England clam chowder and the poke salad. Both were great!!! And she served my prosecco in a REAL champagne glass! Excellent lobster mac and cheese, beautiful sunset, plenty of seating, friendly staff. Steak on baguettes were very very good. Good music at the out door bar although we sat out on the deck we could hear the music very softly as we watched the sun setting. Table wasn't clean up before we sat down which is the only reason for the 3 stars. Restrooms were ok. Price was good, on a scale from 1-5 I'd say a 3 for pricing. read more

Garbage. Don't waste the time or money. Started with calamari and it was the furthest thing from fresh even after being fried. Moved onto crab cakes. The crab cake was almost green in color. All breading and oil and zero crab. Had to send it back. Also ordered some sushi, bad idea. The fish was warm as if it had been sitting out all day instead of in the cooler. We wanted this to be a hit because it's close to us and on the water but they failed us bad. Waste of 100 bucks. Do yourself a favor and stay away. read more

First time here. Ordered scallops appetizer, fried calamari with shrimp and lobster bisque soup, which were all delicious! Disappointed that they ran out of crab cake for our main dish but the NJ Cipolino was a tasty substitute. Very busy and the servers apologized, but kept our glasses full, so it made up for it. This is probably the quickest I have ever reviewed a place. I ate here about a half hour ago; we decided to leave the office for once and grab some lunch. Bad plan. I did not have a say in where we were going, so off we drove, across the bridge to Sunsets. First of all, the decor is god awful. Imagine a Brooklyn Italian's 1980s home, in all of its glorious gaudiness (Pastels, white, gold, general terribleness), combine it with the inside of a bait and tackle shop, throw in some way-overdue-to-be-replaced carpets and some flourescent bug zapperesque wall fixtures and there you go: you've got yourself the decor at Sunsets. Take a deep breath. You smell that? Overwhelming stench of B.O. That's right, boys and girls. It stinks like body odor. Musty and GROSS. Hey, what's that? Oh! It's a mouse. Of course it is. Of course there's a mouse running around in the dining room. j: "Excuse me, waiter... there's a mouse." w: ::horrified look:: "w-where?" j: Running around. w: ::looks around:: ::more horrified looks:: *waiter disappears into the kitchen and emerges with a woman who I believe to be the owner. We keep the doors open and we have a big mouse trap but it only kills ten mice at a time so he must've got in. I'm not really thrilled to be eating here at this point but the rest of the table doesn't seem to be phased by the mouse infestation. They eat their food, turkey sandwiches; reportedly bland and tasteless. I got a steak salad. Got through about 3 strips of off-tasting, tough steak and can't finish. All of the greens are wilted, brown, and have slimy black spots. No thanks. This place is restaurant HELL and it somehow managed to offend all of my senses. I worked at Sunsets around the time of the first review. I was in the kitchen and back then this was a fun place to work and also eat/drink. When I worked there it was a latin fusion restaurant and it was a blast. I took the year off and returned for the next season to find out that the owners sold it and that it was now an Italian restaurant. The place was so poorly run, I left for a different kitchen. I have returned and I agree with Roxie's review. The food isn't that good, the place is a mess, and the ambiance is so cliche (but not in a good way) that it comes off as a shittier version of the olive garden (atleast you'll have a consistently average meal there). There are better places in the area that are cheaper and put out real Italian food. Mom's kitchen in Neptune and Tavalo in Long Brach are both better. If you care about the view then just eat at Klien's. Food is just as bad and you get the opposite side of Shark River. read more

The last time we went here was 3 years ago. We used to go about once a year. We even have some very cute pictures that the manager took of us together over looking the water for our July 4th anniversary one year. We were thinking of going back this summer. It was not a great restaurant but it was nice and did not have rodents! Then I saw Liana L's review and Matthew R.s. He says it is now an Italian restaurant. As far as Italian restaurants because there are so many I am pretty picky. I usually try not to go to restaurants where I can cook the same thing at home. Matthew R says it was Latin. When we went it has a Caribbean theme. What we liked the most was the atmosphere. We liked sitting out on the deck. The pictures on the web site show now a happy hour and all of that. They did not have that back then. I remember there were lines and all of the servers were polite and friendly.Chris D says the crowd gets rowdy after dark. So it has changed for sure. It was more of a family restaurant back then. The one big down side was that the bathrooms were super cramped and dirty. When I read about the mouse , and that now it is Italian and it is now focused on drinks,I decided against going back. I draw the line at rodents! I am sorry they sold it!
