It's been about a week since I got my car back from Sunset Transmission, and -- because of past bad experiences with mechanics and cars -- I am still anxious about the repairs failing on me! But so far, Baha's work has proven to be exceptional. Crossing fingers! And I will definitely keep updating this, as I go, in order to provide y'all more context ... BUT FOR NOW, I want to tell whoever is reading this, my personal experience with Baha was great! He's knowledgeable, funny, fair, patient, and empathetic. My Mitsubishi Montero (a wonderful, but rare car) faced transmission failure, so after several phone conversations with Baha, I towed it to his shop, told him it had an extended warranty. He immediately recognized the warranty company, told me to be patient while he investigated the issue. Over the next two weeks, he was kind and patient with me, he kept me informed and reassured me when necessary, while he did his best to diagnose and rebuild the transmission. Then I got the call that my car was ready, and when I arrived to pick up my car, Baha showed me what he did, all my old parts, then reminded me of his 12-month warranty, and said, "Don't worry, we're not a scam, I've been doing this for 40 years, we are good at what we do! And if something goes wrong, bring it back and I'll look at it! I'll be here!" I told him I hope only to come back to buy him tacos for lunch! He's like a good uncle. I was referred to Baha from my mechanic who told me that he was the best at what he does, and will tell you straight up what you need. I brought in my friend's Saab 9-5 2011 which had a transmission service light on and could not shift out of first gear. Baha, I don't know where to begin. I came in after finding out a car I just bought did NOT actually pass smog (was fudged) and that the transmissions torqueconverter and evap canister (and solenoid something?) needed to be replaced. I was so nervous to find out what I had to pay, as I had been advised an "over $600, but under $2k" estimate for a 2005 Corolla I just spent $5.1k on. Sellers market, I know what you're already thinking lol. Baha was so incredibly patient and kind when explaining my options, and very obviously SUPER knowledgeable on this particular issue. He was describing issues with the car I had not even mentioned to the previous mechanic I saw or anyone - *without even looking at the car, only the code review sheet!!* I came in scared I was going to be either $5k down the drain, or $7k if I kept and repaired the car, and left without needing to spend a dime. He advised me on what he would personally do in this situation (which I will let him explain to you if you're in this position ) and I was so relieved I literally cried in the parking lot and felt so bad I had no cash on me to tip. I want so badly to give him my business in the future because his advice saved me literally thousands in mechanical repairs and therapy from the potential stress! Wonderful shop! Dropped my honda accord due to transmission jerking. It needed a complete overhaul. Baha is very communicative. He let me know what the problems and issues. These guys are the absolute best! I made a last-minute appointment with them and they managed to squeeze me in - when I arrived first thing in the morning they greeted me with a smile + took my car out to test it. Each of the employees was incredibly nice - one checked in with me to make sure I'd been taken care of, another even offered me a fresh cup of coffee while I sat and waited! Eventually the first guy (who I believe was the owner) came back and talked with me - he was super clear and honest about my car and what we should do for the future with my transmission. Fast, easy and cheap! I drove away a very happy customer and I plan on going back with any transmission issues I might have in the future! Also, here's a picture of the dog's corner - there's some stupid review on here about "animal abuse" - the dog they own is a rescue and doesn't get along with other dogs. Sometimes he's outside"patrolling" his area, sometimes he's inside. As you can see, there is water, multiple toys, and a bed for him. And treats galore, which although not pictured, I'm sure are fed to him constantly by all the lovely employees! Please take your business here! Can't say enough positive things about ST. I had some engine trouble one weekend. I had AAA tow my car to them. They looked at the car for free and told me what was wrong. The engine was broken to the point of none repair. I decided to sell the car for parts and ST let me keep my car there for two days (for free) before the parts company could tow it away. Sunset Transmission is a GREAT shop. I took my mid-90s truck in early on a weekday for a general maintenance-type check and was greeted by the owner right away. He listened intently, showed me what the mechanic was doing, walked me through the results of the check, even offered me coffee while I waited. As there was no major work to be done, I was there for about 45 minutes total. This was my first visit to Sunset Transmission and was so impressed by the courteous service that I came straight home and registered a yelp account so I could spread the word! I've had some pretty terrible mechanic experiences--being a girl with a terrible old truck and very little knowledge about cars, but I completely trusted these guys and never once felt like I was getting the run-around. I brought my 2001 Acura MDX here on the recommendation of my regular mechanic, Craig at Ise automotive. The car has a hundred eighty five thousand miles on it and was sluggish to accelerate. Baja at Sunset Transmission couldn't have been any nicer. He test drove my car and explained that it is normal to replace the transmission on this model at least once or twice at this mileage. He said my car set the record for having no transmission rebuild ever done. I was all ready to pay him to rebuild my transmission for what I thought was a very fair price of $2500 with the AAA discount and a 2 year warranty. Instead, Baja suggeated checking the transmission fluid and recommended just changing it as he found metal shavings in it. He also turned off the airbag light that had been a nuisance. The fluid replacement only cost $62 with the AAA discount. Now I feel secure that I can continue to drive my MDX knowing that I can rebuild the transmission with this shop if I need to. Very clean, accurate, fast and honest. Highest recommendation. read more

After having read the 1 star review here, when these guys offered to diagnose my transmission-related dashboard light for FREE (quoted $90 elsewhere), I was skeptical. They told me the light was on do to a simple overheat, and said that while my transmission failure was "inevitable" (something I've been told before and know to be true ... my car is old now, and everything else has been replaced), they turned off the light and sent me on my way. For FREE! Can anyone say "W00t!?" When the day comes that I bow to the inevitable, they quoted me a total rebuild price that was $500 LOWER than my usual mechanic, Pinkie's. The next day I took my car to the dealership (due to a recall), they inspected my car as well and didn't find anything wrong with it. I came to Sunset Transmission based on Yelp reviews. When I came in my regular car to inspect the shop I was greeted by Jose. I have never seen such an organized and clean repair shop, one of the clues I look at when deciding to spend money on my boat. That boat is a 1969 Superior Coach hearse/ambulance combo, a delicious beast of a vehicle. I knew the transmission had likely never been serviced in its 80,000 original miles and certainly never in the fourteen years I'd driven it. When a rebuild was recommended, I bit the bullet and gave the go-ahead. The work was done quickly but subsequently, the vibration that had brought me into the shop was worse. A thorough exam by a group of mechanics led to a diagnosis of the drive shaft needing work. Ow, that hurt. I kept the car over the weekend, but decided to go ahead as I have been having many major items renovated and was in too deep to stop now. Mr. Kim quoted me a price and in a rare act of professionalism, absorbed costs when they ran higher than quoted from an outside shop. That is an investment in customer relations that will last a lifetime. We have two "real cars" and they will always go to Sunset Transmission. We took the hearse out for a road trip today and it has never, I mean never, ever, felt so smooth or given such a pleasurable ride. He also gives out the best chewing gum packets! read more

Mr. Kim and one of his employees drove my car around the block a good number of times to try and diagnose the gear switching problems. He put my car up on the lift and checked out the vacuum diaphragm. They spent about 45 minutes doing that, and gave some possible options. Mr. Kim didn't charge at all, and was very earnest and helpful. He quoted $1375 for a transmission rebuild. I didn't get any further work done there, but I would recommend anyone to take their car there for Mr. Kim to at least take a look at. Definitely an honest straight up fella. It is also one of the cleanest, neatest shop I have seen. Open on Saturdays too. Bonus! read more
