    sink in vanity area
    Carol H.

My husband and I were travelling across country and wanted to stay in vintage lodging along Route 66. We chose the Sunset Motel, and we were not disappointed! The property is in a "L"-shaped motor court design and was opened in 1959. The original motor court has been maintained, with attractive landscaping and many art pieces evocative of Route 66. Attention has been paid to the property's original appearance, and vintage elements have been kept and lovingly maintained (e.g., paneling in the rooms, the tile bathroom and sink, and the mid-century furniture and lamps). At the same time, necessary modern elements have been incorporated (the individual heating/cooling unit for the room ["mini-split"], modern TV, microwave and fridge, and low-flow toilet) which all worked well. There are charging stations for EVs in the central parking area. We especially appreciated the thoughtful elements like the rubber duck in the bathroom, Peet's coffee for our coffeemaker, and chocolate kisses on the nightstand. There are plenty of bed linens (including extra blankets) and towels and washcloths for the bathroom. Our room had a nice set-up, with a sink in the bathroom as well as second one in the adjacent vanity area. The water pressure was a little low, and the temperature control for the shower was fairly touchy, but the plumbing was otherwise functional. The beds had very soft mattresses, which were great for my husband but not firm enough for me. The motel's cinderblock construction kept our room quiet despite being right on Route 66 (just off I-40), and we didn't notice any highway noise. The TV's operation took some figuring out; choosing "menu" on the remote finally gave us instructions for the system. The operation of the room's heating and cooling unit was also somewhat confusing, despite instructions posted next to the remote on the wall. It would be nice if the proprietors could provide simple instructions in the room or on the website regarding details for guests (e.g., how to get ice, operation of the TV and HVAC system). We know that extremes of temperature can occur in this area of the country; we stayed here during a temperate time and were comfortable, but we cannot fully comment on how effective the heating/cooling system would be for any given room mid-summer or in the dead of winter. All the exterior walls appear freshly painted, and the central parking area is clean and well-lit. The motel has easy access to local restaurants (be aware that all dining establishments in town close between 8 and 9 pm). Also be aware that, while travel sites state that the motel offers a "free breakfast," the hotel's website does not state this. Guests are provided with a gift bag with 1 pastry and 1 clementine per person, and there are coffee and tea available in the room. If you are looking for a genuine vintage motel on Route 66, we recommend the Sunset Motel!

Loved this little family run hotel on our cross country trip. They have a Tesla charger!!!!!

Great location, friendly staff. The bagged breakfast to go was really good! My husband loved the bear claw pastry and muffin. The shower / sink could use a little refresh/refurbishment. The heat is strange. There is a radiator and an AC, I think the AC fan comes on and is supposed to blow the radiator heated air into the room. It was a little chilly but warm if you stood directly next to the radiator. I was glad there was a fridge and coffee maker and the room was large. The bed was fine. The parking was good. I would stay here again, but I think it's a little more worn than you are led to believe. Overall, a good stop over for our road trip.

    Good restoration.

Fun old, yet well restored and safe, Route 66 motel. We were met quickly by the very friendly owner, who gave us the keys and told us to go to our rooms to get out of the heat while he did our paperwork. Rooms were restored, 1950's style, and fun. For some reason, our two rooms were not adjoining, despite having a reservation a month in advance. I took lots of photos, and imagined driving my 1963 Falcon down Route 66 to stay there at some point in the future. Breakfast was nothing but some muffins, and a promise for some green chili omelets which never happened -- disappointing. My kids were told not to "frolic" in the parking lot -- they were just throwing a frisbee back and forth, nowhere near the cars or anything else that could possibly be damaged -- disappointing. Price was on the high side, and based on the two above disappointing issues, we will stay elsewhere next time.

I'd give this for stars but there were a few issues with my room. The bad - my room didn't seem fully clean. It smelled of dog and there was no fan on when I walked in, making the smell strong. There was also food and fur on the bench by the front door. I did not eat on the bench nor did I bring a pet. I think it might benefit from good deep clean of the carpet. It could also use something more on the window to block out the light and people who look in a they could see the beds. The okay - there is an outside seating area, but it smelled strongly of gas which made me wonder about the old looking propane tank in the barbecue. The good - the bed was comfortable, there was a cat in the lobby, and there were fresh baked pastries for breakfast, along with two clementines. It is a cute motel, and the bathroom was nice. Also the soap in the bathroom smelled great.

What a fun experience!! My son and I stayed here on the way to a baseball tourney. I booked it based on all of the awesome reviews, and they were not wrong!! I was looking for a motel off of Route 66 and this was perfect...The room was charming, vintage and so clean! The owner met us at check-in and suggested a dinner option, gave us our keys and a bag of yummy muffins. When we walked into the room it was like walking back in time! So fun! Definitely stop here if you're traveling through!

Very low tech wind up clock.

After reading reviews on this motel, we booked it for the night. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm and welcoming reception from the owner. The motel looked clean and well maintained from the outside. We were informed they no longer offered continental breakfast, but provided us with homemade muffins and oranges. Perfect for us. We received the key, an actual key, and pulled the car directly in front of the door. Upon entry we saw it was a small room but very clean and welcoming. There was a rubber duck and chocolate kisses to help us enjoy the room. The bed was clean and comfortable, tv worked great with many channels from which to choose. Coffee maker, mini fridge and microwave provided. Bathroom was clean and towels were soft and absorbent. I strongly suggest stopping here if your driving on the I-40. So glad we stayed out of the bigger city and away from the chain hotels. You will not be disappointed.

    Cute attention to detail.

After driving through the nightmare of Albuquerque , New Mexico at night I made it to Edgewood…read more This is the only hotel in town , but it looked better and had better reviews than the next town , Moriarty. I booked using Priceline to save a couple bucks and it was still $152 with taxes and fees. Some of the reviews of the Moriarty places stated about their cars being broken into , so I paid the extra to stay here because my SUV was loaded with my stuff and I had a hitch box on my rear bumper because I was moving from Las Vegas to Oklahoma. The employee that checked me in was very nice and he told me to park by the charging area under the solar panels with the RVs to be the safest area and well lit. There was one RV parked there , but in the morning there was 2 more , one with a boat. I had free breakfast in the morning with a few others and they had an older lady attendant that was making sure everything was stocked up and clean. Nice lady. It was funny the guys behind me mentioned how the eggs tasted like from the Army and me being a Veteran told them I agreed , they tasted like the reconstituted ones we had during maneuvers. The sausage patty was pretty plain so I put some pancake syrup on it , orange juice was watered down , biscuit was pretty good but gravy had some sausage bits but not very flavorful so lots of pepper I had to put on it. They had cereal and yogurt too and a waffle maker. There is also a coffee machine in the lobby 24 hours a day and also have hot tea. There was 2 or 3 computers for guests to use. I used that night for about 15 minutes for something I really couldn't do on my phone which was convenient. The parking lot was clean and well lit and appeared to be in a safe area. I went to the Subway just next door for a sandwich that night and they give you a discount for staying at the hotel , but it was the worst stale Subway sandwich I've ever had ! Now the room , first thing when I walked in the floor was sticky. It looked clean , but they must have mopped over a spilled soda or something. Other than that the beds were clean and made nice and the room looked like a Comfort Inn room with 2 queen beds , mini refrigerator , microwave , coffee pot with coffee and accessories. I got a regular room not a Suite so no couch or living room , but there was a chair. The next morning I took a shower and on the wall in 2 different places was a long black hair , way longer than mine and mine are unfortunately gray , but at 58 I still got more hair than guys I work with that are in there 30's ha ha. The rest of the bathroom was clean and came with some amenities. On the wall of the shower they have mounted body wash , shampoo , and conditioner that were a mint smell. Not bad , but not what I would pick , but hey I'm just traveling. I was on the 2nd floor and the elevator worked , but was a little shaky. All in all it's a pretty decent hotel , but I don't think it's worth $150.00 to stay here. I would say it should be around half the price , $75.00 a night. As I said the only reason I paid this was because I didn't feel safe staying in Moriarty with my vehicle loaded. They also have an indoor pool which I didn't use. I only stayed the one night and then back on the road.

On this trip we were not too pleased. First of all when when we arrived in our room the temperature was 48°. Inside our room! The air conditioner had been removed so many times and repaired that there was no insulation at all on the wall. Wind was blowing through our room. We did use the heater and things were fine after it finally warmed up. Our bed was stained in several spots, one at the end of the bed was definitely blood. We could only use cold water in our sink. They hung a mirror above it that would not allow the hot to turn on. See my photo. The bathtub was also very dirty inside. Parts of the hardware in the shower had what felt like barnacles all over it. Our room did not have a microwave or a refrigerator but did have the cart for them. I'm generally not picky and just want comfortable bed and a safe place to sleep. I felt safe here, but my bed was like sleeping on a stack of bricks. Extremely uncomfortable my husband and I both woke up sore the following day.
