Step Back in Time at the Sunset Motel - Classic Charm with Modern Touches The Sunset Motel on Route 66 is a true step back in time--in the best way possible. From the paneling and vintage furniture to the mid-century artwork, the entire place feels like a well-preserved piece of Americana. It's clear the owners take great pride in maintaining the property and providing guests with a welcoming, nostalgic experience. Though it's just 650 feet from the interstate, we didn't hear any road noise at night--a pleasant surprise. While we weren't traveling with pets, the motel is clearly pet-friendly, with a nicely kept grassy area for pet relief. The pet fee is also very reasonable at just $15. Our main challenge was the lack of accessible power outlets in the room. As someone who uses a CPAP and travels with other electronic devices, this made things a bit tricky. The continental breakfast came in a charming little bag and included a bran muffin and two oranges. There's a coffee maker in the room, which was appreciated, but don't expect a full breakfast spread. The beds were very firm--in our opinion, too firm for a comfortable night's sleep. That might work for some, but it's something to be aware of if you prefer softer bedding. EV travelers should know that the Tesla charger onsite is owned and operated by Tesla, not the motel. The staff doesn't have much information about it. There are two units, both with J1772 adapters, and they appear identical to Tesla destination chargers. I charged at 11 amps to avoid idle fees and was pleased to see no charges after about 10 minutes post-charge. The cost was $0.36/kWh--about half the price of the Francis Energy Superchargers in the area. A surprise! Family owned and friendly to travelers ! We like motels. This one maintains her 60's Route 66 flair. Clean, well kept, and very furry friendly for our German Shepherds. Quiet the night we drive in mid week. Special touch having bed blankets available for hairy pets, lighted grassy run for walking and all for $15 each for pets. Worth it. We thought bed in our unit could have been firmer but that is the only negative. Surprise treats for breakfast were very yummy fresh pastries and suggestion list of good breakfast places. read more

My husband and I were travelling across country and wanted to stay in vintage lodging along Route 66. We chose the Sunset Motel, and we were not disappointed! The property is in a "L"-shaped motor court design and was opened in 1959. The original motor court has been maintained, with attractive landscaping and many art pieces evocative of Route 66. Attention has been paid to the property's original appearance, and vintage elements have been kept and lovingly maintained (e.g., paneling in the rooms, the tile bathroom and sink, and the mid-century furniture and lamps). At the same time, necessary modern elements have been incorporated (the individual heating/cooling unit for the room ["mini-split"], modern TV, microwave and fridge, and low-flow toilet) which all worked well. There are charging stations for EVs in the central parking area. We especially appreciated the thoughtful elements like the rubber duck in the bathroom, Peet's coffee for our coffeemaker, and chocolate kisses on the nightstand. There are plenty of bed linens (including extra blankets) and towels and washcloths for the bathroom. Our room had a nice set-up, with a sink in the bathroom as well as second one in the adjacent vanity area. The water pressure was a little low, and the temperature control for the shower was fairly touchy, but the plumbing was otherwise functional. The beds had very soft mattresses, which were great for my husband but not firm enough for me. The motel's cinderblock construction kept our room quiet despite being right on Route 66 (just off I-40), and we didn't notice any highway noise. The TV's operation took some figuring out; choosing "menu" on the remote finally gave us instructions for the system. The operation of the room's heating and cooling unit was also somewhat confusing, despite instructions posted next to the remote on the wall. It would be nice if the proprietors could provide simple instructions in the room or on the website regarding details for guests (e.g., how to get ice, operation of the TV and HVAC system). We know that extremes of temperature can occur in this area of the country; we stayed here during a temperate time and were comfortable, but we cannot fully comment on how effective the heating/cooling system would be for any given room mid-summer or in the dead of winter. All the exterior walls appear freshly painted, and the central parking area is clean and well-lit. The motel has easy access to local restaurants (be aware that all dining establishments in town close between 8 and 9 pm). Also be aware that, while travel sites state that the motel offers a "free breakfast," the hotel's website does not state this. Guests are provided with a gift bag with 1 pastry and 1 clementine per person, and there are coffee and tea available in the room. Great location, friendly staff. The bagged breakfast to go was really good! My husband loved the bear claw pastry and muffin. The shower / sink could use a little refresh/refurbishment. The heat is strange. There is a radiator and an AC, I think the AC fan comes on and is supposed to blow the radiator heated air into the room. It was a little chilly but warm if you stood directly next to the radiator. I was glad there was a fridge and coffee maker and the room was large. The bed was fine. The parking was good. I would stay here again, but I think it's a little more worn than you are led to believe. Overall, a good stop over for our road trip. read more

Motel was clean but overly expensive for its age. The room had a desk with no chair to sit at it. The faucet in the bathroom had just a trickle with both knobs on full. We wanted to get on the road around 730 am but the supposed coffee and pastry was locked in the office so why call that a benefit. The bathroom had no fan so you have to open the window that had no screen. We looked on line and it said 112 with tax included. There was no AAA or senior discount and we were billed for 126.49. There was no plugs near the beds and we both use cpap for sleeping, thankfully we had an extension cord so we ran it across the room to use one. This place in our opinion should be about 75 or 80 bucks w/tax included. Sorry mediocre old school at best. read more

Fun old, yet well restored and safe, Route 66 motel. We were met quickly by the very friendly owner, who gave us the keys and told us to go to our rooms to get out of the heat while he did our paperwork. Rooms were restored, 1950's style, and fun. For some reason, our two rooms were not adjoining, despite having a reservation a month in advance. I took lots of photos, and imagined driving my 1963 Falcon down Route 66 to stay there at some point in the future. Breakfast was nothing but some muffins, and a promise for some green chili omelets which never happened -- disappointing. My kids were told not to "frolic" in the parking lot -- they were just throwing a frisbee back and forth, nowhere near the cars or anything else that could possibly be damaged -- disappointing. Price was on the high side, and based on the two above disappointing issues, we will stay elsewhere next time. read more

I'd give this for stars but there were a few issues with my room. The bad - my room didn't seem fully clean. It smelled of dog and there was no fan on when I walked in, making the smell strong. There was also food and fur on the bench by the front door. I did not eat on the bench nor did I bring a pet. I think it might benefit from good deep clean of the carpet. It could also use something more on the window to block out the light and people who look in a they could see the beds. The okay - there is an outside seating area, but it smelled strongly of gas which made me wonder about the old looking propane tank in the barbecue. The good - the bed was comfortable, there was a cat in the lobby, and there were fresh baked pastries for breakfast, along with two clementines. It is a cute motel, and the bathroom was nice. After reading reviews on this motel, we booked it for the night. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm and welcoming reception from the owner. The motel looked clean and well maintained from the outside. We were informed they no longer offered continental breakfast, but provided us with homemade muffins and oranges. Perfect for us. We received the key, an actual key, and pulled the car directly in front of the door. Upon entry we saw it was a small room but very clean and welcoming. There was a rubber duck and chocolate kisses to help us enjoy the room. The bed was clean and comfortable, tv worked great with many channels from which to choose. Coffee maker, mini fridge and microwave provided. Bathroom was clean and towels were soft and absorbent. I strongly suggest stopping here if your driving on the I-40. So glad we stayed out of the bigger city and away from the chain hotels. You will not be disappointed. read more

My Father and I stayed here recently and this is such a funky, cool little Motel. I loved their delicious home made muffins (the coffee cake one is amazing)! We stopped here after a very long day! Super lovely staff. A little disappointed after a long day we were given a room with 2 double beds. The staff did not tell me that was what I was getting. 31 years of marriage and haven't had to sleep in 2 separate beds before. Oh well, we survived. Also the room while very clean and attractive really smelled of smoke. Mattresses were very soft. Also coffee in the lobby provided at 7 am which is pretty late for people traveling. I was skeptical that a outdoor motel with only 19 rooms identical to bates motel could offer so much! Trust the 5 star reviews. This hidden gem is awesome! Very retro style rooms, very clean and comfortable! If I ever pass back through I will stay again. Pet friendly and nice little breakfast! Free wifi. Only complaint for me was the water pressure and that it took a little long for hot water to get warm. It's a 1960's motel. What did i expect? VERY clean(!), comfortable beds, helpful staff on the phone, and has obviously been renovated & kept up. Like walking into a "new" hotel must have been back in the day. We liked that there's a full bathroom, plus an extra sink/mirror too, all around the corner from the beds so the lights didn't shine right on the bed. The rooms were so clean - husband commented that the bathrooms were the cleanest he's ever seen in a hotel/motel. Incredible spot to stop on the way to Phoenix. The motel was literally the simply cleanest motel I have ever stayed in. The owner was super nice and explained the history. We decided to stay at this motel because we were finding nothing in Albuquerque that we liked, especially in reviews. We loved the place. It is pet friendly, complete with a nice grassy area for the dog's needs. The hotel dates to 1959 and is on the old route 66 highway so a very mid-century vibe. The furniture might very well be original but in really nice shape. I doubt there are very many mid-century modern motel furnishings left so these were a treat. The beds were very comfortable. The metal chairs outside looks period and there is a great patio. All in all, for us, it was lovely and we recommend you visit. read more

Loved this hotel. We stayed here on our way from Ohio to Arizona based on the reviews we had read online. We were not disappointed. Super clean, quiet, conveniently located, and comfortable. The lady at the check in desk gave us delivery recommendations, and had I not been sick I would have enjoyed the pizza she recommended.
