Maui Sunriders Bike Shop in Kihei has a solid reputation, but my first experience with them was…read moredisappointing due to a preventable reservation issue. I reserved an e-bike on December 21 for a Christmas Day ride, with a return on the 26th. Their online system let me submit the reservation without any warnings or restrictions. But when I showed up to pick it up, I was told they wouldn't rent it to me because they're closed on the 25th, and someone else had the bike booked on the 26th. They also said they needed time to tune the bike in between. That explanation is understandable. What's not understandable is that nobody told me ahead of time. If they had reached out earlier, I could have adjusted the plan. I didn't even mind paying for an extra day to make it work. The bigger issue is that the reservation system shouldn't allow you to book dates that can't actually be fulfilled. I'm open to giving them another try, but they really need to fix the reservation process and communication so customers don't find out at pickup that the rental can't happen.

We quickly filled out a rental agreement then they gave us the rundown in operating an E-bike and answered question. They provided locks and backpacks for our water. They would have also provided helmets if we wanted them. Jeffery and staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, welcoming and efficient. This will definitely be our "go to" place for bike rentals in the future. Thanks for a great time!!

As my grandboys say...Two Big Thumbs Up! Everything on the trip exceeded expectations. I could…read moredetail the tour and talk about all the great views but that is pretty much the same with all the bike tour companies that go up the volcano. Since we have toured with other companies, I want to tell you what I think Maui Bombers does better. If you want general information about the route, check their website. Communication- instead of only getting canned responses from the internet reservation program you get messages from Matt that respond back to his cell phone. Small Group- only six in our group. We jumped in a Honda Pilot and headed up the volcano with Matt and Eric. The small group size created a more intimate experience. We talked with each other, shared experiences and had laughs. Matt and Eric joined our conversations as well. We all got to know each other a little bit. You don't get that on a bus with 15 other people. Hospitality- we were taken care of by the guys who run the company not employees who may or may not have the best interest of the company in mind. Matt fresh baked treats for us and worked to make everyone feel like family. Seriously, Matt could also be a baking star with his Coconut Muffins and Lilikoi Bars. Guess Eric doesn't bake, but he does drive well. Equipment- we rode newer Trek mountain bikes with street tires. Comfortable helmets, windbreakers and gloves also provided if you like. Upgrade from the single speed heavy cruiser bikes most tour companies use. The Treks are nimble and easy to ride. Tour Route- we had a longer tour route than other companies, on the way down we passed the other groups loading up while we were on the way to the beach. Personality- Matt is a loud energetic let's have fun kinda of guy, great for a guide. Played inspirational music from his bike to keep the energy up. Did I mention Matt is loud and animated? Eric is a little more reserved but is there to take care of business loading/unloading bikes, driving the safety car and just making sure everything is great. Great team, very professional. Safety- I don't mean to imply that you will be unsafe on any of the other tours but we felt safe and taken care of on our tour with Maui Bombers. Good bike check and safety briefing and hand signals. I appreciate that Matt leads the way, warning if necessary and making turns on the correct roads. Eric followed behind in the safety car keeping traffic at bay and letting Matt know when we needed to find a pull off spot to let traffic pass. We saw one tour where the guide followed the pack, yikes...guide following? Our tour also left a little later allowing most of the local and tourist traffic to clear the volcano and villages so we had the road pretty much to ourselves. Photos and Videos- along the tour Matt takes photos and videos of the group and scenery. While that is not unique, on the way back Matt airdrops all the photos and videos to everyone. No extra charge and they are great quality. Really nice perk. Price- Maui bombers was a bit higher than some of the others but you know what, you get what you pay for. Small group, equipment, snacks, photos...yeah, you get what you pay for. The Real Deal- Matt and Eric are the guys. They take care of you like their business and reputation depends on it because it does. The energy is great. These are the reasons for my five star review of Maui Bombers. Highly recommended.

Communication from Matt was excellent. He contacted me the day before to let me know the national…read morepark was closed and that we would have to do an alternate route. He left it up to me if I wanted to do that or cancel. We were game and we said let's go. Pick up was easy. Plus Matt does small parties. We start off with the coconut pineapple muffin he made. Which was insanely delicious. Then he says"we are going to drive up and double check to see if we can get in because there has been no updates". We got lucky and we made it up the mountain as they had fixed the sink hole and the road was clear. We were the only ones up there because the other bike company did not even try. So that was a big bonus. We had one in our party decide it was too dangerous and Matt handled that perfectly. And then she tried to bike an easier part and quit. He handled that perfectly too. Then we got to check out Makawao for 20 min. Which was cool. Then we rode all the way down to Pa'ia. And met him at Baldwin Beach area. 17 total miles of bike riding. All easy coasting. Of course the first 7 miles is all switchbacks and thrilling. With Matt you do not have to wear motorcycle helmets, you wear bike helmets. Matt provides that and optional bike gloves. He even has wind breakers if you forget yours. We all had the best bike ride of our lives. No joke. We are still talking about it today. And actually that is not a bike ride. That is a thrill ride. All those switchbacks etc. Matt drives you back to your car at Target. He gives you a second treat. His passion fruit squares. These were very delicious too. But I personally liked the coconut pineapple muffin better. We will most likely do this again if we come back to Maui. It is that good. Hitting the red button now.

Maui Easy Riders was a SUPERB choice!! Booking with the owner Billy was great as he prepared me for our adventure over the phone. The morning of the excursion, we met our guides, Charlotte and Jon, who proved to be an absolute hoot! They alieved any anxiety and brought some great history lessons as we trekked up the mountain. My wife and I were celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary and the last time we were in Hawaii was for our honeymoon, 38 years prior. Charlotte and Jon made us feel special. Unlike many other companies, Maui Easy Riders only allows 6 people per session, so it was easy to get to know your fellow travelers and we became close friends in a very short time. They have a specially built cruiser bike that has a huge, extremely comfortable seat and and massive disc brakes for both wide tires. The ride is exceptional and you feel very much in control. There is no "push" for you to speed down the mountain, and until everyone was comfortable with their "sled", the downhill journey was held at your own pace. The van follows you down the mountain and runs interference for cars that might be coming up to pressure you. No worries or anxiety here. If you need anything at all, they came prepared to assist you: Rain gear, pants, windbreakers, snacks, water and Gatorade. At any time, you could have access to the stuff you might of brought in the van. We made several stops to take pictures and view the landscape and learn of areas to be aware of as they might be coming up. Charlotte was a great leader, guiding us with hand motions and instructions for our safety. She and Jon communicated with walkie-talkies to navigate the traffic and the care of the riders. We all shared some great stories as we learned all about the route and history of Maui. I can't recommend Maui Easy Riders enough. Their care and concern for your safety and adventurous spirit made our trip extremely enjoyable. The 6 of us riders enjoyed the journey so much, we all had lunch together, laughing and sharing more antics from the excursion. Don't pass up YOUR experience!! Thank you Charlotte and Jon for a WONDERFUL experience !!

Everyone in the tour parked their car in the town of Paia and were picked up by Billy and another individual (forgot his name) in the Maui Easy Rider van. Once we arrived at Haleakala, it was a bit chilly and misty (morning tour), so bring a jacket. You can store you personal items in the van, so don't worry about carrying a lot things. Billy took the time to ensure the helmet and bikes were a good match for our head size and body height. After going over the safety rules, Billy led the group with his own bike while the helper drove the van in the back blocking passing cars to create a safe ride for us. The ride itself was amazing. It was about a 25 mile bike ride ( ~2 hours), but it was really casual and smooth. It was mostly downhill so majority of the time was spent being in awe with the surrounding environment. We passed by ranches, farms, towns, and residential areas. You go at your own pace, so there's no pressure to go with the group. If you're desiring a fast and challenging ride, then you move up in the line. And if you're casual and want to take it slow, you can stay in the back. The van will always be in the back blocking cars, so you're safe. Just enjoy. We also made frequent breaks to rest and take photos. We took couple photos at scenic places and even took a photo with a chameleon. To summarize, this was one of the best way to experience this area of Maui. Highly, highly recommend Maui Easy Riders

I decided to stop by the shop on my day off. Calling it s bike shop is too narrow of a definition it's more of an electric bike center with rentals, sales, and short term rentals available at the location. Its a great way to immerse yourself in electric bike culture. Lee was busy with his bike advocacy work so he turned me over to his shop manager Nathan. I was able to test ride three different types of electric bikes and by the end of that experience I understand why they're e-bikes are catching on so quickly. The Center's west side location gives you good access to bike routes to explore right from the shop. The technology has definitely evolved since the last time I rode and e-bike. All the bikes look clean and well-maintained and all three bikes I rode perform perfectly. I rode one bike that was had thick tires and reminded me some what of a pick up truck I noticed that one used a little bit more power than the others but I think they would have adequate range for an afternoon biking on the west side of Maui and seeing the sights. What can I say the top of the line e-bike with the crank based assist motor seem to work the best for me that's also the more expensive option for purchase. Definitely worth checking out if you're thinking of going the E bike route.
