This was a very cool trip!! We really didn't know what to expect as we had done our research as to which company seemed to be the "right" one for us to descend from Haleakala. Maui Easy Riders was a SUPERB choice!! Booking with the owner Billy was great as he prepared me for our adventure over the phone. The morning of the excursion, we met our guides, Charlotte and Jon, who proved to be an absolute hoot! They alieved any anxiety and brought some great history lessons as we trekked up the mountain. My wife and I were celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary and the last time we were in Hawaii was for our honeymoon, 38 years prior. Charlotte and Jon made us feel special. Unlike many other companies, Maui Easy Riders only allows 6 people per session, so it was easy to get to know your fellow travelers and we became close friends in a very short time. They have a specially built cruiser bike that has a huge, extremely comfortable seat and and massive disc brakes for both wide tires. The ride is exceptional and you feel very much in control. There is no "push" for you to speed down the mountain, and until everyone was comfortable with their "sled", the downhill journey was held at your own pace. The van follows you down the mountain and runs interference for cars that might be coming up to pressure you. No worries or anxiety here. If you need anything at all, they came prepared to assist you: Rain gear, pants, windbreakers, snacks, water and Gatorade. At any time, you could have access to the stuff you might of brought in the van. We made several stops to take pictures and view the landscape and learn of areas to be aware of as they might be coming up. Charlotte was a great leader, guiding us with hand motions and instructions for our safety. She and Jon communicated with walkie-talkies to navigate the traffic and the care of the riders. We all shared some great stories as we learned all about the route and history of Maui. I can't recommend Maui Easy Riders enough. Their care and concern for your safety and adventurous spirit made our trip extremely enjoyable. The 6 of us riders enjoyed the journey so much, we all had lunch together, laughing and sharing more antics from the excursion. Don't pass up YOUR experience!! Going downhill on Haleakala with Maui Easy Riders is of the most exhilarating and memorable activities to do in the area. Everyone in the tour parked their car in the town of Paia and were picked up by Billy and another individual (forgot his name) in the Maui Easy Rider van. Once we arrived at Haleakala, it was a bit chilly and misty (morning tour), so bring a jacket. You can store you personal items in the van, so don't worry about carrying a lot things. Billy took the time to ensure the helmet and bikes were a good match for our head size and body height. After going over the safety rules, Billy led the group with his own bike while the helper drove the van in the back blocking passing cars to create a safe ride for us. The ride itself was amazing. It was about a 25 mile bike ride ( ~2 hours), but it was really casual and smooth. It was mostly downhill so majority of the time was spent being in awe with the surrounding environment. We passed by ranches, farms, towns, and residential areas. You go at your own pace, so there's no pressure to go with the group. If you're desiring a fast and challenging ride, then you move up in the line. And if you're casual and want to take it slow, you can stay in the back. The van will always be in the back blocking cars, so you're safe. Just enjoy. We also made frequent breaks to rest and take photos. We took couple photos at scenic places and even took a photo with a chameleon. To summarize, this was one of the best way to experience this area of Maui. Today was my fourth time riding down Haleakala with Maui Easy Riders. Of all the activities I've pursued on Maui (zip lining, Molokini snorkeling, Haleakalā star gazing, etc etc) this is The Best. It's the only activity that we've repeated. We do this ride every trip. First trip, four or five years ago, I rang up this outfit before my visit. I wanted to make sure this ride is in fact all downhill. Because no way in hell I could possibly ride a damn bicycle for 25 miles otherwise. I get Billy, the owner, on the line and he's like, Mikey just relax, it's pretty much all downhill. He tells me yeah, the ride is 25 miles, but only 500 yards of that distance is actually uphill. OK, I think to myself, I should be able to handle that. Then I need to know about the gear they use. First, I had to ask about the helmets. Because, you know, I have a huge head. I asked Billy, Do you have helmets for guys with really massive heads? Billy laughed and insisted he did. But even more than the helmets, what I really wanted to know was about the bikes. Specifically the seats. Because if there's one thing in this world I know a lot about it's my ass. In fact I'm the world's greatest authority on the subject. And thusly qualified, I know there's no way in hell my ass could sit on one of those narrow bicycle seats like they have on them fancy racing bikes. Billy said don't worry about it, the seats are big and wide. He tells me they're very comfortable, actually. You know my ass was glad to hear that! So, the day comes and we meet up in Paia. The van ride up to the 6,500 ft elevation departure point was informative and also super entertaining. Most importantly they explain that you can go downhill as fast or as slow as you want. There is absolutely no pressure to go any faster than you are comfortable with. They teach you the hand signals they use to safely guide you down the mountain. The whole while they're doing the explaining they're also pointing out historical points of interest and slipping in some hilarious tales of previous guests who didn't follow the rules. They told us they have a notebook with all these crazy stories, and they advise you just follow the dang rules so you don't end up in the notebook. So for once in my life, I listened to the rules. I mean, intently! I damn sure didn't want to end up in that infamous notebook (In my mind I could hear them telling a future van full of riders, One time there was this guy with a really massive head...). So we get up to the staging area. Billy and his partner unload the bikes and hand out the helmets. What do you know? They really did have a helmet big enough for my giant head. And to my relief, the bicycle seat was as big and wide as promised. Then there was the ride. Factually speaking, from the first moment you start to roll down the mountain to the end you travel about twenty-five miles and it takes around two hours (90 minutes of riding, 30 minutes visiting Makawao). But facts be damned. Like during any other magical activity, time slows down as as you descend down the mountain. Riding at such a leisurely pace makes the ride seem to last at least two or three hours. There's no better way to experience the utterly breathtaking Maui scenery. I like to ride in the back of the pack. I'm in no hurry to get to the bottom of the mountain. I want to savor each moment, to revel in the magnificence that is Maui. I'm not sure what's happened to Maui Easy Riders. We had a great experience with them 12 years ago on our honeymoon and were eager to book with them again for a road to Hana trip. I texted Billy to confirm our trip yesterday, since I hadn't heard anything since mid March, and got a call back about a cyber attack from an ex-girlfriend and a lot of other details. Set a time to meet today and 40 minutes before we're supposed to meet he calls me crying and says that he's unable to meet as his life is in danger. After expressing sympathies, I asked if a refund was possible. Immediately his tone changed and he offered to take us tomorrow... which if your life is in danger... does not make sense. When I hesitated, he started yelling at me about money and hung up. I'm not sure what's happening with him and this formerly great tour service, but please do not give yourmoney to them right now. BEST Haleakala Bike Tour and Hana Jungle Adventure!!! We are a family of 5, 2 adults with 3 teen kids, and we booked private tours for both the Haleakala Bike Tour and the 5 Hour Jungle Adventure Road to Hana with Billy and Charlotte. They were AMAZING! And I trust the best on the island for these types of tours. Billy and Charlotte were incredibly knowledgeable about the island and local customs and were immensely entertaining. We especially appreciated their thoughtful touches all around. On the Jungle adventure, they knew the local residents personally by name (as well as some of the animals!). My husband and I, my 3 sisters and their spouses, decided to go on the downhill bike sunset ride yesterday and it was AMAZING!! Billy and Mikey hid their doubts well when we all signed up... you see, our ages range from 58 to 73, and riding bicycles downhill at a fairly high speed for 90 minutes (up to the individual) can sound a little crazy, and scary, but it was exhilarating and just plain F.U.N. First of all, I'd like to say that Billy's tour company is one of the best I've been part of in all of my many travels. We were lucky to enough to enjoy both Billy and Timm's (also a talented piano player btw) company. Billy has been doing this for 13 years and he sure as well knows how to do it right! He also has a great personality, very refreshing and brings a personal touch to his service. We did both of their tours, the road to Hana tour and also the bike tour. This was our first trip to Hawaii and didn't know anything, let alone know that there was a tour for the road to Hana. The meeting spot is a parking lot in Paia. We did the road to Hana tour with Timm as Billy had another group that day. The tour goes the entire day and costs around 500$ if you're using your own car and about 750$ if you use theirs (this is for 2 people, not sure if it's more for larger groups). Timm is a great, spirited guy who is fun, adventurous and kept us entertained throughout the 12 hour day. We were glad to have him drive as we were exhausted towards the end and didn't know how we would've managed on our way. We hiked through bamboo forests, saw waterfalls, snorkeled (fairly rough waters at the red sands beach), drank coconut water out of a coconut using bamboo straws, ate amazing fish tacos and saw sea turtles in their natural habitat. We did the bike tour with Billy and Timm the next day which was equally good even though we were slightly exhausted from the previous day. They drive you up Haleakala to a midpoint and then bike down from there. The bikes are road bikes and are sturdy, never felt unsafe during the whole time. The whole trip is downhill and you barely work a sweat except for one part that was uphill which we walked. We were a group of 6 that day. The tour costs 125$ per person. We stopped at bakeries, ate donuts on a stick, visited a lava church (one of the most beautiful and the oldest in Hawaii) and took amazing photos in between. The tour lasted about 3 to 4 hours and could not have been better. So what makes them better than the other companies? It was a little hard and frustrating initially to contact them but I was not aware of the time difference but then I messaged Billy at the same number and from then on was smooth. I don't think there's any tour company where you can text the operator and stay in touch throughout your stay that way. Billy went out of his way throughout our time on Maui via text to give us great recommendations on beaches to visit, places to eat and things to do! Completely outside of the tour. The only thing that could've been better for us was probably due to our own fault. We'd assumed that the bike tour was a sunrise tour and that it would been from the Haleakala summit and should've enquired more about it. We couldn't make it to Haleakala and were slightly disappointed about it even though the tour itself was amazing. Also even though the road to Hana tour was fabulous, it was definitely a surprise and not what we expected. The hike itself took a good 2 to 3 hours, while we were expecting a more relaxing hike and swim, it was a fun adventure and wouldn't change it! I'd say book the tour with Billy whenever possible. Bring bug spray! and good shoes! and enjoy the ride :) Overall, great tour company. Book with them and you'll definitely have a great time no matter what. Our trip was absolutely amazing. It was so so nice that we had a guide in front of us and the van following us. We watched a different tour company take a group to the top and send the riders down on their own. How scary! You couldn't enjoy the beauty if you were constantly having to check for cars behind you. The bike seats are so large and comfortable, I didn't feel like I had been sitting on a bike for 25 miles when we finished. It was a rainy day, but wet, wild and wonderful. There's something to be said about getting rain gear on, go through safety check, get on great bikes and beginning the 25 mile from 6500feet elevation down the volcano with a rain as your constant companion. AWESOME Definitely a do over. The guides were great. Very attentive and positive. Limited to eight people maximum which makes a huge difference. We saw other groups that numbered in the twenties. This is an experience of a lifetime! Don't leave Maui without doing this! From the second we met Charlotte and Johnny, we knew we picked the best company to take us on this journey. The ride up the mountain and the history lesson from Charlotte was super cool, and the donuts (local family bakery) and fresh fruit were yummy! We ended up meeting the owner Billy later on in the day as well and he couldn't have been sweeter. If Tim is your guide, you'll end up with a parting gift that will blow you away. We took a bike tour with Billy and Tim! It was amazing and relaxing. The perfect way to see the island from the volcano as we coasted nearly 26miles down the mountain. Loved that we were able to ride in the center of the lane and the van followed us so no fast-passing cars. Minimal exercise. Maximum Maui good vibes. Bikes were well-maintained and comfy. This tour was the highlight of our trip. Billy and Tim are awesome guys and very knowledgeable. We felt very safe the whole ride down. You don't need a ton of biking experience to enjoy this, you can go as slowly as you like and it is very safe with one guide in front on the bike and another in the van behind sandwiching you. It was cold on the top of the hill but they came prepared with jackets for us to use on the way down (along with waters!). We made a few pit stops throughout the trip. One at a local market and another in street of small shops. Billy was so nice and bought us donuts at one of our stops too. Great experience all around. Prompt customer service in getting everything coordinated to meet for an on time departure. They had all the gear and clothing for all the different weather conditions we encountered which included rain gear. My wife was worried that it would be too dangerous but they have a good system of having a lead biker in the front and the van blocking traffic from flying up from behind which turns out to be a great system for a fun carefree ride that is 99% downhill but never scary. Great guys running small groups down Haleakala through eucalyptus forests and lavender fields--AWESOME! This is a great trip--well worth doing. I recently did this trip with two of my brothers. I was a bit apprehensive because in July of 2012 I had taken a drive up the volcano and it rained the entire time, but we were blessed with a beautiful day this time. We met the two Billy's in the parking lot of a public beach near Paia--a little hippy surfing town. They were on-time, or as close to on-time as you can get in Hawaii! There were 5 total people in our group (which is one of the things that makes Maui Easy Riders so awesome--they take small groups, much better than careening down the volcano with 25 other people!). They were cordial and polite and professional. We loaded in their van, bikes strapped to the top and headed up the mountain. Had a great time chatting with these guys and learning their history, how they left the Midwest to carve out their niche in paradise. They are very knowledgeable about the island and all the stuff to do there! They are also first responders, so we felt pretty confident in the event that something happened on the road! We stopped on the way at a local market for supplies and restroom. Then went as close to the top as these tours can get. The views of the whole island up here are outstanding! The bikes are BIG and HEAVY--much heavier than road bicycles--about 45# I think, so that takes a bit of time to get used to. The brakes are NOT typical road cycle brakes, it takes some time to stop--but the Billy's get you used to how they work. One Billy takes the lead, and you all go single file down the mountain, with the other Billy in the van blocking you from traffic. Simple signals tell us when to pull over, stop, etc--felt VERY safe and secure on this trip--and we did get going pretty fast on some of the straightaways! We would periodically pull over if there was something interesting to see, and then made a half hour stop in the cowboy town of Makawao--where we were treated with DONUTS ON A STICK--AWESOME! Hung out at the galleries and shops, then finished strong down the rest of the mountain and ending up back where we started. Overall--this is a fun, safe, beautiful trip with great leadership from the owners. Highly recommended. read more

Maui Easy Riders is the best. My husband and I booked a private tour with Billy, and we were not disappointed. He started with a short tour of Paia and then we continued around the Haleakala crater. From the south side of the mountain, you could see the big island of Hawaii across the ocean. We then continued north to Hana and back around to Kihei. Throughout the tour, Billy asked what we wanted to see and as we had never been there, we didn't know what to expect so we told him to surprise us. He did! It was pouring rain so many of the dry riverbeds were full and created amazing waterfalls. He took us to a few different beach spots where we were the only people on the beach. Sometimes there were maybe another few people but never more than 2 to 4. I asked about going to Wai'anapanapa black sand beach and he said it was for tourists. He took us to another black sand beach that was beautiful and private. We chose the full day tour and hanging out with Billy was like hanging out with an old friend. At one point, we were hungry and there were a bunch of food trucks nearby. I asked if we could get something to eat and he said sure. I can't say enough about this company. Billy and Billy were fantastic guides. We had a group of 8 and paid for the private tour and were completely satisfied. These guys made the experience comfortable and fun, and were very responsive to everything we wanted or needed. For several in our group, this was their favorite thing we did in Hawaii. Biking from 10,000 feet above sea level to sea level is an amazing adventure. We truly had a blast. My 14 year old daughter, who isn't a big fan of going downhill on bikes, lead our group and did great! We all had fun and it was very safe. The bikes don't look like much, but are actually perfect for this trip. The bikes are heavy, with a low center of gravity, and excellent brakes. This is exactly what you need. Billy and Billy work really well together to make sure that we were all safe and away from traffic for the most part. No complaints on safety at all. Billy and Billy are very welcoming and entertaining. I think we all felt like we could be friends with these guys. We asked them if they did any sunrise tours... and they made it clear they don't get up that early for anything. ;) We left them with a tip and with two of our overprices styrofoam coolers from our trip to Hana the day before! These guys do a fantastic job and I can't recommend them enough. If you want to do a downhill bike trip -- do this one! read more
