As my grandboys say...Two Big Thumbs Up! Everything on the trip exceeded expectations. I could detail the tour and talk about all the great views but that is pretty much the same with all the bike tour companies that go up the volcano. Since we have toured with other companies, I want to tell you what I think Maui Bombers does better. If you want general information about the route, check their website. Communication- instead of only getting canned responses from the internet reservation program you get messages from Matt that respond back to his cell phone. Small Group- only six in our group. We jumped in a Honda Pilot and headed up the volcano with Matt and Eric. The small group size created a more intimate experience. We talked with each other, shared experiences and had laughs. Matt and Eric joined our conversations as well. We all got to know each other a little bit. You don't get that on a bus with 15 other people. Hospitality- we were taken care of by the guys who run the company not employees who may or may not have the best interest of the company in mind. Matt fresh baked treats for us and worked to make everyone feel like family. Seriously, Matt could also be a baking star with his Coconut Muffins and Lilikoi Bars. Guess Eric doesn't bake, but he does drive well. Equipment- we rode newer Trek mountain bikes with street tires. Comfortable helmets, windbreakers and gloves also provided if you like. Upgrade from the single speed heavy cruiser bikes most tour companies use. The Treks are nimble and easy to ride. Tour Route- we had a longer tour route than other companies, on the way down we passed the other groups loading up while we were on the way to the beach. Personality- Matt is a loud energetic let's have fun kinda of guy, great for a guide. Played inspirational music from his bike to keep the energy up. Did I mention Matt is loud and animated? Eric is a little more reserved but is there to take care of business loading/unloading bikes, driving the safety car and just making sure everything is great. Great team, very professional. Safety- I don't mean to imply that you will be unsafe on any of the other tours but we felt safe and taken care of on our tour with Maui Bombers. Good bike check and safety briefing and hand signals. I appreciate that Matt leads the way, warning if necessary and making turns on the correct roads. Eric followed behind in the safety car keeping traffic at bay and letting Matt know when we needed to find a pull off spot to let traffic pass. We saw one tour where the guide followed the pack, yikes...guide following? Our tour also left a little later allowing most of the local and tourist traffic to clear the volcano and villages so we had the road pretty much to ourselves. Photos and Videos- along the tour Matt takes photos and videos of the group and scenery. While that is not unique, on the way back Matt airdrops all the photos and videos to everyone. No extra charge and they are great quality. Really nice perk. Price- Maui bombers was a bit higher than some of the others but you know what, you get what you pay for. Small group, equipment, snacks, photos...yeah, you get what you pay for. The Real Deal- Matt and Eric are the guys. They take care of you like their business and reputation depends on it because it does. The energy is great. These are the reasons for my five star review of Maui Bombers. Communication from Matt was excellent. He contacted me the day before to let me know the national park was closed and that we would have to do an alternate route. He left it up to me if I wanted to do that or cancel. We were game and we said let's go. Pick up was easy. Plus Matt does small parties. We start off with the coconut pineapple muffin he made. Which was insanely delicious. Then he says"we are going to drive up and double check to see if we can get in because there has been no updates". We got lucky and we made it up the mountain as they had fixed the sink hole and the road was clear. We were the only ones up there because the other bike company did not even try. So that was a big bonus. We had one in our party decide it was too dangerous and Matt handled that perfectly. And then she tried to bike an easier part and quit. He handled that perfectly too. Then we got to check out Makawao for 20 min. Which was cool. Then we rode all the way down to Pa'ia. And met him at Baldwin Beach area. 17 total miles of bike riding. All easy coasting. Of course the first 7 miles is all switchbacks and thrilling. With Matt you do not have to wear motorcycle helmets, you wear bike helmets. Matt provides that and optional bike gloves. He even has wind breakers if you forget yours. We all had the best bike ride of our lives. No joke. We are still talking about it today. And actually that is not a bike ride. That is a thrill ride. All those switchbacks etc. Matt drives you back to your car at Target. He gives you a second treat. His passion fruit squares. These were very delicious too. But I personally liked the coconut pineapple muffin better. We will most likely do this again if we come back to Maui. It is that good. Hitting the red button now. read more

Couldn't have asked for a better day to do this experience. The weather was perfect. The only thing I wish, which Maui Bombers had no control over, is that we could've started all the way at the top. We start about 2/3 of the way up, and the ride is a nice cruise down the side of the volcano with stunning views. We even spent about 30 minutes in a nice little town that had a bunch of souvenirs and food. Mat was our guide and he was an absolute delight. He has excellent customer service and was very knowledgeable about Maui. He was able to give us ideas on what else to do in the area after the bike ride. Mat provides everything you may need, water, wind breakers, gloves, helmets and a homemade treat! I would recommend this to anyone who has a free morning during their time in Maui. Completed an epic ride (Cycle to the Sea) with Maui Bombers today. Pre-ride, Matt was attentive to message inquiries about the ride, the informative website answered everything else. Please do take caution to the "Restrictions and Requirements" section, particularly the "Ability" portion. The website features photos and videos of the ride if you're curious about the route. Matt was ready and waiting with water, Gatorade and snacks upon arrival, including homemade coconut muffins and lilikoi bars. Waivers were signed and we loaded up with one other couple (max is 6 persons per vehicle; 12 persons maximum per tour) for the drive up to Mt. Haleakala. The views are top notch. We rode on a partly cloudy day and the magical puffs surrounding us were heavenly. After a brief tutorial of safety signals and route overview, we began our downward descent to the tunes of Europe. We stopped at the mile mark to make sure everyone was comfortable and bikes operating properly. The mountain bikes provided are well-maintained and comfortable, adding to the epic ride. There are approximately 3 stops and lunch was included with our tour. The fresh focaccia at Makawao Cafe completed our sandwiches delightfully! The remainder of our ride was pleasantly smooth, a gentle ride through the country with a brief moving tour of Paia. The tour ends at Baldwin Beach, where the bikes are loaded up and you are escorted back to your vehicle. Tips: *Wear cycling clothes, including a long sleeve cycle shirt. *Use the restrooms where you can (pre-ride and halfway stop for lunch). *Smile -you're on camera! The guys were all super nice and provided a level of care/support you could tell the other company's do not (including driving behind us like the Tour de France for a portion of the drive). Good humor from the guys and a beautiful ride. The bikes were in good shape and built for the long descent. Wear layers, it is chilly up top and at speed you'll need more clothes. This review is late in coming, however I did the new Wild Wednesday tour on July 5th, 2023. I was visiting with my family however they didn't want to go with me so I signed up solo as the tour had an option for this. I showed up in the morning and found that I was the only one who signed up and I had my own private tour with Eric and Matt. We drove to the top of the mountain and on the way had a muffin (coconut / pineapple I think??), which was excellent. The guys then got the bikes out, set everything up, and even offered a spare wind breaker, which was nice. As biked down the mountain Matt played some great tunes to boost up the mood. He also took some great video and pictures throughout the tour. I really like this tour's road option as we did a section that I hadn't done on a prior tour with another company on a previous trip, which was great as I was able to see different areas of the island. Once we were done, we got back to the parking area, where they offered lunch at a great location. While it was just myself, I got to talk to them and they were both really friendly and had some good conversation. Overall, it was an excellent trip and I highly recommend to anyone to go with Maui Bombers. I'd definitely do this again on a future trip and hope to try a different tour route with them. Thanks guys for allowing a solo tour, it was really appreciated! Only recommendation I would have is for Maui Bombers to offer standard mountain bike saddles if a customer requests it. I loved the mountain bike, but didn't care for the forward position of the cruiser style seat on it. Please note, this comes from me being a regular cyclist and prefers a standard bike position. I was all in favor of trying to see the famed sunrise on top of the volcano in Maui and then bomb down the mountain side until I read Matt's website about the reality of such a trip. Quickly I figured out he was spot on. I immediately booked my bomb down the mountainside and skipped the overrated sunrise. His bikes were top notch with good brakes and comfortable. I noticed other operators using crap! We were the only tour not using sweaty uncleaned heavy motorcycle helmets. Standard bike helmets were all that were necessary and less gross. Matt's got it dialed in. Maui Bombers is the only company who rides ACTUAL bikes (trek) and wears ACTUAL bike helmets. My hubs and I did the 'Cycle to the Sea' tour which I HIGHLY recommend. No other tour offers this and it gives you some of the most beautiful views from upcountry. We were there during one of the Kona Lows and Matt was so super flexible about shifting days and keeping his eye on the weather. Matt's done over 4000 rides on his tour (now that's downhill- combined he and Eric, the pace van driver, have gone up Haleakala a total of ZERO times ) and I made a point to call out his enthusiasm for him doing this so many times- you'd think it was his first! First, the bikes are high end Trek models with extra bike mountain bike tires, great suspension and big comfy seats. Bomb activity! Matt was friendly and informative. If you can ride a bike, book this tour. We did the unguided and it was wonderful. Matt had designated check points down (maybe 4?), but more for guidance with routes, and less for babysitting. You can keep your backpacks, water in the van and retrieve along the way or at the bottom. Maui Bombers uses Trek bikes, with good tires, cute bells, and comfy (think beach cruiser) seats. Matt provided us with bike helmets (sanitized after use). There is a noticeable price difference in this company vs others, but just the equipment difference alone is worth it. Wonderful, comfortable way to bike down Haleakala. Instead of 3am start, Matt and Eric picked us up in Paia at 8am. This schedule misses the sunrise, but also the early rise and the cold. Designed for smaller groups, with very entertaining and experienced guides, great bikes, drinks, and even homemade muffins. Had a chaser van behind us to control/warn of traffic, and comfortable lunch stop on 24 mile downhill coast that had us back at our car by 1230, leaving time for a trip back up to see some sites up-country. I should add that my 80 year old mother and her 76 year old companion did the ride. While fit for her age, some extra patience and accommodation was expertly and kindly made (appreciated) making this the highlight of our trip. read more

Day of the ride the bikes had been set up ahead of time, they got a good safety briefing and they set off. Matt and the driver Eric were awesome! I had my mind so set on doing a sunset bike tour but the guys in the bike shop down stairs from our condo highly suggested Maui Bombers. I went back and forth and chose to do this instead and im so so so soooo glad we did!! Matt's passion and energy just make for an incredible personalized experience. As you go up you see all the sunset bike tours come down and they look awfully miserable. They wear full face helmets, are in very large groups and in the middle of all the traffic. Not sure how they even see the al the AMAZING views with those giant helmets on there head not to mention they're heavy and hot! We did the guided tour which i definitely recommend over unguided because Eric follows behind you in the van so cars don't sneak up behind you. Also starting a bit later you encounter very few cars and we felt extremely safe. We were with just one other fun young couple and all kept at a great pace that everyone was comfortable with. His instructions and tips were incredibly helpful and like i said his fun energy (and music) just really makes the ride even better. You stop at a small cafe for lunch which was so delicious. Matt and Sean were awesome guides. Bombers is a great way to go down Haleakala if you're looking for something more private, a little more catered to your tastes and a little more chill. The max tour size is 6 people. We wore regular bike helmets (no full face helmets) and rode on hybrid Trek bikes with 21 gears. (I've ridden on other tours with only one gear... doesn't matter when you're bombing down, but on flats where you're looking to gain some speed? It's #worthit.) Matt was willing to go whatever speed we wanted. If you were wanting a leisurely pace, he'd definitely make sure you were comfortable. Sean followed behind in the van, radioed Matt when cars came up behind us and they got us over to let the cars by. Safe, efficient and at our speed, we didn't make a lot of locals mad. I would do it again and I would recommend that anyone looking for a bike ride down Haleakala rides with Maui Bombers. read more

I initially made the mistake of taking one of the tours that insisted on wearing motorcycle helmets and wasted hours waiting to watch a very cold sunrise. The motorcycle helmet completely ruined the ride for me. It restricted both head movement and peripheral vision. Generally a very unsatisfactory experience. So, a couple days later I went back and rode down the mountain with Maui Bombers. Lots more enjoyable. Wearing a bike helmet made a huge difference. This was the most incredible bike tour I've ever taken. 1st of all, this was the only tour I saw that had great bikes that you could actually switch gears and could handle the road. Most tours in Maui use beach cruisers that aren't comfortable and are a lot harder to use. Also, this was the only tour I saw that doesn't make you wear a full motorcycle helmet, just a regular bike helmet so you can see everything around you. We did the bike to the windmills tour and this company is the only company that does this route. It was hilly and you will get exercise in, but the views are second to none. What an awesome day. Started by meeting Matt and his driver at Paia Park. From there we drove to almost the top of the Haleakala Volcano and started our exhilarating 28 mile downhill bike ride to the ocean. Absolutely beautiful views and exciting hairpin turns. Matt ran a well supervised and responsible ride and even provided us with pictures and videos he had taken on the ride at no charge afterwards. Stopped in Makawao for a delicious and relaxing lunch. Curry Chicken Salad was amazing. Matt provides everything - water, muffins, bananas and a great lunch . All included. Starting the actual ride at 9am eliminated most of the cold, and made for an uncongested ride down. Bikes were first class with 21 speeds for the short two uphills. First off Matt was awesome. He picked us up from our hotel and had fresh banana bread muffins and ripe bananas. They were delicious. His bikes were Trek Hybrid bikes. Real nice bikes with comfy seat, front suspension and disc brakes. The bikes work great, the gears shifted perfectly, although I didn't really need them because we did the tour from Haleakala to the sea. All downhill. That being said, the brakes worked great. Me and a coworker of mine were experienced riders and Matt let us ride down the mountain on our own ahead of the other single rider who was less experience. The tour group was small, just 3 of us and because of a storm the day before. The roads were empty. The best part was riding on our own, down the mountain. We reached close to 40 mph. That is not something I would do with a bike I don't trust. We had lunch in the cool little town of Makawao. I recommend revisiting Makawao on your visit to Maui and I would definitely go back with Maui Bombers to do one of there other tours. read more

The windmill bike tour was, hand down, our favorite activity on Maui! We almost signed up for the more common Cycle to Sea tour, but we are so glad we trusted our gut and went with the longer, more strenuous trip, because it was sooooo worth it! The hybrid bikes made it very comfortable, and the downhill ride, followed by simultaneous rolling countryside and ocean views were truly breathtaking. I literally could not stop smiling the whole way (except maybe when were going up those last couple grueling hills before finally reaching the windmills ;-) ). Needless to say, we earned our lunch after the 28 mile ride, and Matt treated us to some of the best burgers on the island. Matt has put a lot of thought into how to make this the best experience possible, and you can tell that he loves what he does. Not only did he make sure that everyone felt comfortable and had fun the whole way, but he peppered in little details to make it extra special... from the homemade muffins and snacks, to taking photo and video footage, to blasting 80s music as we bombed down Haleakala.
