It was a private tour with Kyle driving (my husband was so happy) and we saw waterfalls, swam in lagoons, hit up beautiful beaches, ate wild berries, had coconut ice cream from a food truck, had the best poke bowl ever, hung out with turtles, and saw so much of Hana. When my wife suggested that we hire a driver to take us to Hana, I wasn't sure why we would need one. Then I started reading online about how windy and narrow the roads were. Combined with the fact that the road to Hana is nicknamed "the Road to divorce", well that made it an easy decision to go along with it. I am so glad I did! Kyle was an amazing tour guide. Not only was he well prepared for the trip with snacks and drinks, the vehicle was extremely comfortable, and he provided a running commentary all along the way of facts and history. Best of all, he stopped at places which people who were driving themselves would never know about. We would literally pass dozens of cars parked on the side of the road only to go down the way about a mile, pull off on some side road, and find an even better more secluded beach to swim. We weren't sure if we should get a private driver for the Road to Hana but I'm so glad we did. AND I'm so glad we went with Kyle of Sandy Cheeks. He was the BEST. He was knowledgeable, entertaining but also safe. He took us to places we hadn't read about. He even showed us a cool almost hidden lava tube and walked us through it with flash lights for all of us! He provided drinks and snacks and also showed us some really cool places to stop for snacks. We had the freshest fruit tray and the tastiest poke. Kyle, with Sandy Cheeks Tours was simply amazing! We (my husband, myself and our 12 year old son) booked for the 1/2 way to Hana on July 3rd 2023 and everything about it was perfect. Kyle has a great personality and fit right in with our family. Great conversations as he told us the history about how he ended up in Maui years ago, to starting his tour business. He took us to some off the hidden path, yet beautiful areas where there weren't a lot of other folks so it was nice to jump in and swim in a waterfall that we had all to ourselves. There is so much to see and do on the road to Hana and we knew we wouldn't be able to do each recommended stop so we decided to have a local guide show us around to take the guesswork out of everything. We're also not fans of tour bus type tours so we were able to narrow it down to Sandy Cheeks tours based on the excellent reviews. I'm writing this review to thank Kyle for an amazing experience with the Sandy Cheeks Tours. We have a family with 3 boys ages 10, 8 and 2. I really wanted to show our children the "real" Maui and not let them leave the island thinking it is all hotels and swimming pools. I called Kyle and told him I was hiking with small kids and I hoped we could experience Hawaii and all of its natural beauty. I had dreams of jumping into pools filled by waterfalls, finding secret beaches, hidden little spots where locals go and getting a real feel for wild life. I couldn't imagine driving down that narrow winding road while trying to soak in all the beauty nor did I want to deal with a bus full of tourists. Kyle was the answer to all these concerns! Having a private guide really relieved the stress of planning and trying to navigate via map. He took us to all the best spots and timed it where we were often the only ones there. We passed so many crowded "tourist" spots and really got to explore the hidden gems. We stretched our tour over 2 days to avoid feeling rushed and to ensure we didn't miss a thing. I am long overdue in writing this review. We hired Kyle of Sandy Cheeks Tours in late February 2020 to take us on a full day tour of the road to Hana. I cannot say enough superlative things about our day with Kyle. We were on Oahu for a few days and then Maui for 2 weeks, and we did a lot of great things, but nothing matched this experience. We had never gone on a personal tour before, but if ever there was a time to do a personal tour, you should do it when you want to explore Hana, and Kyle is the perfect person to hire. He was very professional, easy to talk to, listened to what we were interested in (we didn't want to go swimming or jump off cliffs, wanted to take lots of photos of waterfalls, etc. ). Kyle is a safe driver, and a great person. He treated us like family. He picked us up at our house in Makawao and proceeded to take us to amazing places all day. There is no amount of internet research or guidebooks or even an audio tour that can replace someone who really knows all the ins and outs of the Hana Road and knows your preferences and interests. He took us to waterfalls, black sand beaches, a red sand beach, 2 wonderful roadside food stands, and a delicious food truck area for lunch. All the scenery in between was beautiful, too. He took us to see sea turtles and there was a monk seal at one of the black sand beaches (they are endangered). You can tell he loves the land. (I would like to add that he knows where good bathrooms are, too.) We are so happy we chose to spend the day with Kyle as our guide, and highly recommend him. read more

My girls, 16 and 13, and I visited Maui for the first time in mid June and definitely wanted to experience the road to Hana. I wanted to be able to enjoy the "journey" too, so I contacted Kyle for a private, "local" perspective tour. He promptly responded and was able to accommodate our date request and was available ,via phone and email, to firm up details of of our tour. We started our tour on the backside of the road, which allowed for less traffic and "tourists" along the way. We visited "secret" spots and often times were one of the only visitors, if not one of only two small groups, at each experience. Having just recently had knee replacement surgery, Kyle tailored the trip to our ability and comfort level. We did short, manageable hikes to access waterfalls, fresh water cave exploring, a local fruit stand and beautiful beaches. We swam in the ocean, explored fresh water caves, jumped off a waterfall into fresh water pool. Kyle is willing to accommodate everyone's comfort level, gently encouraging each of us to experience each of these unique locations to the fullest. Kyle is outgoing, passionate and knowledgeable; not too mention so easy to chat with and get to know(important when spending 8+ hours with a "stranger"). Along the way, he shared tidbits of Hawaiian island history, culture and day to day life. He pointed out distinctive plants and wildlife. I have to say, this was totally the highlight of our trip to Hawaii(having visited both the Big Island and Maui). Our road to Hana tour with Kyle from Sandy Cheeks was by far the highlight of our entire Maui vacation. Just when you think you've seen it all and done all the "must dos" on your vacation list, go on a tour with Sandy Cheeks! Being my second trip to Maui, I wanted to see more of the local, secret spots rather than the tourist traps you might find in a guide book. I've done the road to Hana once before, but my friends and I drove it. It was beautiful, but NOtHING like cruising and adventuring with Kyle. First of all he is an absolute blast! His fun personality and vast knowledge of the island made the drive and every stop so interesting and fun! It honestly felt like we were hanging out with another friend. The drive around the backside was breathtaking and Kyle handled that road like it was nothing! We hiked to a huge secluded waterfall (which we had to ourselves) took a quick dip and continued our journey to white sand, red sand and black sand beaches. We stopped along the way at a local farm stand and food truck for lunch in Hana. From there the adventures just kept coming! One of my favorite places on the entire island was a swimming hole where we jumped off the cliffs. I was scared but Kyle was really patient did it first and encouraged us all to go for it. This tour was great! Kyle was the greatest tour guide we could've asked for. We spent 10 hours with him and I can assure you that it was worth every second. Not only do you get to experience the beautiful Maui but you can do it private and go to remote places with little to no other people there. Many times we went to amazing "secret" spots with no other tours around. We visited beautiful waterfalls, amazing colored beaches, fruit stands, and so much more. The cave that he takes you to is absolutely breath taking and our lunch location was delicious. I couldn't have asked for a better day.
