Rented bikes here march 2023 Good bikes, awful customer service from some guy. Some dude that calls him self "the beard". Never mountain biked before, so didn't know his lingo. I told him I've never mountain biked before. He says "you've never mountain biked before... awesome..." in the most sarcastic and dramatic way possible, the tone is similar to when you tell a child he can't have ice cream before dinner. My friends I was with were about to just rent from somewhere else when they heard that. Not surprised though, the guy calls himself "the beard" congratulations man you have a beard. You and literally every man on earth. We would have left but a nicer guy stepped in, noticed the exchange, and helped us out. I forget his name but he had just moved here. Rented a electric mountain bike at Krank and had the time of my life biking in the Makawao Forest. We tried a series of pump tracks by the parking lot and then did loops on the lower section of the Pineapple Express trail. Best mountain bike riding for me ever! Krank owner, Aaron, charged my credit card twice without my authorization. He was arrogent, rude, and dishonest by increasing the agreed upon price once we were present to pick up the bikes at his shop, refused to fit us to the bike as part of the services agreed on, and rented us defective bikes. We made a reservation for 2 bikes 2 month in advance, & arrived at the shop to pick them up & get fitted. Dave, the manager, asked us to ride bikes outside to see if the seats are suitable. We asked the seats to be raised, but he only raised a tiny bit the first two times, and it wasn't raised enough, so we asked Dave to raise it again, the thirds time. On the third time that we asked them to raise the seats, about 10 minute after being in the shop, while we were the ONLY 2 customers there, owner Aaron said to me; "he (Dave, the manager) doesn't have all day to adjust your seats!!!" Owner Aaron said it with such ANNOYANCE, shaking his head and rolling his eyes, while sitting in front of his computer, doing nothing. He made us feel very uncomfortable. Isn't adjusting bike seats a part of this business? Why was he not smart enough to provide a turbo trainer for bike fitting after 5 years after opening this bike shop? What a poor bike fitting process: not only there was no turbo trainer to fit the bikes, instead, you have the ride the bikes out on the busy and dangerous road several times. It was an unprofessional and inconvenient bike fitting process. After being treated with such rudeness by owner Aaron, I decided not to hold back and tell him about the two other conflicting information he gave me in the months leading up to this point. I called 2 month ago to book the bikes in advance, and to make sure they can deliver the bikes to me the day before, the race, as we would start tackling Haleakala next day at 6am. Both of those requests were agreed upon & reconfirmed over the phone with manager Dave to deliver at $40 dollars and deliver the day before the ride around 6:30pm. Owner Aaron reneged in both of those promises when we showed up at the shop. He increased the delivery price from $40 to $60 dollars and delayed the deliver time one day later, which will cause us to miss the ride; our entire purpose of coming to Maui. How frustrating! When I confronted owner Aaron about reneging in both promises, he went into how much he has to pay his employees per hour, going way off tangent, unapologetic and full of righteousness. He doesn't know how to treated people & how to run an ethical business. He showed himself to be defensive, unintelligent beneath his arrogent facade. In addition, when I asked when Dave can pick up the bikes after the ride, both Aaron and David won't give me a time for pick up, they are making every bike rental step as difficult as they can. The reason for not giving us a set bike pick up time as Owner Aaron disclosed, was that they prioritize the Hotels, where they would make hundreds of dollars every time the hotels calls them. Therefore, if the Hotels call them, they will "fly" there to make their hundred of dollars, & when it come to picking up our bikes, they don't make as much money. They rather have their schedule clear for those hotel calls & not to give us a time so they can keep their schedules open, and when they happen to have some time, they will come, regardless of our schedule. Their selfish natures would never consider that we have to rest after a 6 hour Haleakala ride, & that we have to eat, and that it was unkind to expect us to stay up in our hotel room all day to wait for them to pick up the bikes. What a selfish way to do business, and how embarrassing to run after money like that!!!! On the day of the ride, we found the bikes were terrible! The seats slipping down as we rode the bikes. We had to stop multiple times to raise the seats. It was annoying, time consuming, and ruined our trip. And I continued to be scammed by Owner Aaron after I left the island...2 days after I left Maui, after I had already been charged with the agreed on price, I found out Krank's owner, Aaron, charged me again, without my authority !!!! He was not just arrogent, but also running a scram, scramming customers and tourists by holding on to their credit card and charge them again after they have left the island. Please check your credit card statement and make sure you didn't get scammed. read more

My visit at this bike shop was the worst I've ever experienced in the many bike shops I've visited. They didn't take the time to measure me nor was I able to test ride the bike prior to picking it up. When I picked up the bike it was way too big, the top tube was riding up my crotch. When I brought this to their attention (or at least to Gentleman #1) he didn't care and told me they provided a tool kit so that I can make the adjustments myself. (The tool they provided was totally corroded). I then asked if they can pump up the tires to 75psi. Gentleman#2 (the kid that tuned/checked the bike) was about to pump it up but Gentleman#1 told me if I wanted the tires pumped to a specific PSI that they had a bike pump at the front of the store....these are just a few rude comments made by Gentleman#1 which I think actually surprised employee/Gentleman #2. I also bought a $90 tribal jersey which I saw online weeks before. As you can see from the pictures it was very, very stained. I bought it anyways because I really like the design and hoping the stains would come off with a little bleach. Gentleman #1 didn't even apologize for the stains, he didn't care. I did get 10% off not because of the stains but because I rented a bike. Fast forward the next day. I start pedaling up Baldwin St and what do you know, the shifting was off. The chain was making a clicking noise when I shifted to cog #25 and was even worse when I shifted to cog #22, in fact I could even use that gearing. We were able to get two full suspension bikes and get out to shred the Makawao forest. Pineapple Express is a really sick trail with fun and good shred for any skill level. Certainly worth it, and the uphill pedal is fun and beautiful. Be extra certain to check the bike before it goes out. We had a great time riding, but just sanity check that the last person didn't cause issues. Specifically check the limits on derailleurs (Try and see if you can push it so the chain goes off the top of the cassette) and the spokes are all tensioned. These bikes must be getting shredded, as both of ours were dinged up a bit... but we went out and had a blast on them ourselves so such is the life of a rental bike! read more

Great bike shop in Makawao. The staff are very knowledgeable and super friendly. They explain the bikes and how they work and help make you feel comfortable. Great quality brand-name bikes for rent, plus they give you maps of local trails to ride on. They will even help you put the bike rack on your car and load up your bikes. The only issue is that for a 10am-4pm rental, you really don't get that much time. When we arrived at 10:30 to pick up, they were very busy (good for them!) but when it was finally our turn, the bikes weren't ready yet. I appreciate that they do the safety inspection before renting, but it definitely adds time to the checkout process. I think we didn't leave the shop for almost an hour. Maybe this is something they could do the afternoon before? Or maybe before the shop opens at 10am? But that's not a huge negative, just an fyi. Try to get there before 10am if you can. read more

Fabulous bike rental, fantastic ride down Haleakala on dirt roads/trails. The route is known as the Skyline trail. Go from 10,000 ft to about 3,500 ft elevation. Travel through several different climates. And if you leave the summit early in the morning, before 8am, you are likely to enjoy a breathtaking view. (By late morning, the clouds settle in around the mountain and you can enjoy riding in them as well.). No cars to deal with, unless you ride Hy 37 back to Makawao. If you even like to ride bikes a little, you'll love this ride. Just reserve a full suspension bike from Krank in Makawao and have an experience you will never forget. read more

Rented bikes w a few friends for the Haleakala Skyline descent. My diamondback release was set up well for shocks/suspension & my weight & mechanically solid. Rest of the bikes seemed to have no issues. We had one person break a collarbone and the park service unlocked all the gates including the final goat gate and were able to pick the person up in a 4x4 and transfer them to an ambulance. We were late getting down and the shop negotiated a reasonable after hours return fee far lower than typical given the circumstances. I highly recommend Krank and would rent from them again. read more

****Warning from very experienced MTB riders!!! Check your bike before leaving! Confirm you have enough tools!! Don't waste an entire day like we did!**** We rented two MTB bikes for the day Transition Patrol (no longer on website and BMC Speedfox). Because of rain we ended up riding the PoliPoli trails. The guy at the shop provided a trail map (with very little info) and barely offered trail suggestions. We felt like we were a huge inconvenience to the employees during our 15 minutes at the shop during rental pickup. There was no overview of the bikes, suggestion for fitting they just pointed to them and walked away and handed us a one wedgie pack with a couple of tools. While my husband wheeled his bike out he noticed play in his front wheel. He asked the mechanic to look at it and his response was "yeah, the front bearings are blown...be careful" ... and he walked away. We take responsibility for not pushing for a replacement bike. We take the bikes to the trail and make some mild adjustments for fit. This is when my husband realizes his dropper post doesn't work, it would collapse once he sat on the saddle. Luckily he had enough post to raise it manually. We head down to the boundary trail and start the ride. 2.5-ish miles in my husband flats. We pull out the tool kit to realize that: one, the wheels do not have tubeless setup, we only have one tube for 2 bikes, there is no c02, the tube was a DH tube (not easy for very experienced rider to replace) and the pump is old as $$$$ and it doesn't work. So now we realize our only choice is to hike the 2.5 miles back....literally up hill the entire way. While hiking back my husband's front tire flats. Awesome!! Great thing we don't hAave another tube! We return the bike to the shop and explained our experience... our response from their employees: 1: "What!? That plump is brand new!!" - no it's not! One piece was missing (see photo) 2: You gave us one tube for 2 bikes! "So? That should have been enough!" 3: Why don't you have tubeless setup on these bikes? The wheel set is compatible on both "that would be too much of a hassle" wow! We have rented bikes in East Burke VT, Bend, Or, Whistler, BC, Ireland, Moab, Philadelphia & many surrounding areas. We have almost 10 years of MTB riding, DH riding & road riding, we own and maintain all of the bikes for these disciplines. No compensation was offered, no care was given by the employees to the horrible once in a lifetime experience we missed out while in Maui. We have never received such poorly maintained bikes partnered with horrible service from start to finish. We foolishly anticipated a call after we left when they realized everything we said was true....nope!! *Note- we do take responsibility for not doing our due diligence with confirming the bike specs (tubeless setup), checking the toolkit had basics, and test riding the bike prior to leaving (to identify broken dropper post) and not demanding a different bike once the hub issue was identified. I have rented bikes on Maui from numerous shops in the past, and used to live here as well. I was so impressed by my recent rental from Krank Cycles. Moose and the guys had the bike ready to go and looking brand new (if you've ever rented on Maui you know this often isn't the case as some rental bikes look like they haven't ever been cleaned with soap and despite having grease all over still creak and moan with every pedal stroke). The bike was modern, with electronic shifting that worked flawlessly and a silent, well lubed drivetrain and hubs. Batteries were fully charged and ready to go. The rental process took 10 minutes or less and I was out the door. I felt like they would have taken all afternoon going over it with me if I needed the time. They offer flat pedals, helmets, and a repair kit if you need. If you ride clipless pedals you're best off bringing them with you. Krank is fully stocked with gels, bottles, and ride food in case you forget anything. I've rented from all over the island in the past but know that Krank Cycles in Makawao is the place to get clean, modern, and excellent condition rental bikes for any Maui road or mountain bike adventure. read more

I wanted to ride the 10,000 ft volcano. Krank delivered. Their equipment was flawlessly set up, so well it was one of the best bike setups I have ridden. They paid attention to detail, provided me a loaner backpack to pack in their extra tubes and tools which were not needed and gave me a map of the trails. Dropped my bike off at 10 am on November 24 to get assembled and have ride wrap put on. Employee wasn't wearing a mask and answered the phone in the middle of our conversation. Didnt apologize or say excuse me. I was told 2 business days for it to be done. I called back December 1 and the guy made me feel like i was being annoying by checking up on my bike. When i finally got my bike back i noticed the wrap was put on so terribly that my child could have done a better job. There is dirt and debris stuck under the wrap. I noticed they cut the wrap with obviously dull scissors or else the cuts would have been clean. When i called back for an explanation Aaron said to bring the bike back tomorrow for a refund but i live in Lahaina. So for an alternative, he offered that i send a video of me ripping the wrap off. But yet i paid for the wrap with my own money from ridewrap themselves. Krank cycles ruined my wrap. Either way i should at least get reimbursed the $90 i was charged for the installation. I'm just gonna repurchase the wrap and install it myself on my own time now I don't recommend Krank to any local nor tourist. There are plenty of other bike shops on Maui. read more

Stopped in for some rainy day shopping and was recommended this shop by a local who enjoyed downhill mountain biking. We called in advance to assure they were open as the storm had left a lot of businesses closed. We were put on hold for 10+ minutes until we showed up to find the only employee sitting on the computer doing absolutely nothing, with no customers in the shop. Not only that, but the gate was shut and we were expected to slide the gate open to get in. When asked if they were open he mumbled "yes" and didn't even look at us. We asked him about renting full suspension bikes later in the week and he was very short and lacking knowledge. I'm sure the experience could've been better had the person at the counter been more professional and actually wanted to work. I wouldn't recommend this shop at this time. Bad experience. read more

As I know many people have had 5 star reviews on Krank but my experience was quite bad. We rented an Ibis Ripmo AF for my sister and $109 for a single day it quite pricey especially there are less expensive places like Sunriders. Also everyone except Sarah and Jai was quite rude including the owner. They wanted $20 more because we picked up the bike early. If that wasn't bad enough they wanted the bike back at a very awkward time (in a 15min window) With all of that there was 5+ rideable but not very well maintained bikes. read more

I found this shop thru various sites and decided to check them out. For me, I needed to squeeze in a ride during vacation. I'm not an expert but I'm a regular, dedicated rider. Positives: -knowledgeable, informative, and friendly staff. -helpful with suggestions of where, when, etc. to ride locally -great equipment! Great condition, clean, worked well, and newer. -it was awesome that they allowed me to pick up my bike the evening prior as it allowed me to start early the next day. Negatives: -I wish they'd be more realistic about trail conditions. For example, I have no idea about "more than normal" or "this is typical for our climate" means. Had I received a more accurate (just my guess. I don't believe there was any deliberate misleading) assessment of the trail conditions, I would have chosen a different trail. -minor: had to pay for a bike carrier. Overall: I'd go back because I feel these folks embody the spirit of what right with mountain biking. Also, I feel they're invested into the local environmental and I love that. Great choice! This place has great bikes! I rented a couple mountain bikes and the rack they had worked perfectly. I would warn you that if you're not an advanced rider, I would definitely ask them which trails are easier. They didn't ask what level we were and they recommended some trails to us that were fun but definitely not for beginners. I had a few tumbles and a very challenging steep climb. Hawaii is such a beautiful place to ride though. I wouldn't miss this experience. read more

A large group of friends rented mountain bikes here for the Skyline Trail. Easy online booking process and the bikes were in good shape, shifted smoothly, and handled the terrain well. Shop employees were friendly and knowledgeable and gave us a great overview of the trail and maps - additionally they were tremendously understanding (staying late and working with us on the late return fee) when 1 in our group had an accident and had to be taken to the ER. Quick review: 5 STARS: good service, good flexibility, and nice guys. A really fine place to rent bicycles if you're planning on riding down Haleakala. And the town of Makawao is a fun place to bop around and eat. Long version: I booked 3 "mountain" bikes for me and my 2 sons to ride down Haleakala. The idea was to catch the sunrise and then zip down the mountain. Because our ride was on Dec 19, two days before the solstice, it was one of the shortest days of the year, meaning the sunrise was around 7 AM, about as late as possible. We stopped at Krank's the afternoon of Dec 18 and the crew had three Diamondback Release series mountain bikes ready for us. They put the strap rack on for us and showed us how to hang the bikes. We hid the bikes in our friend's condo for the night. Next morning, we gathered up and headed from Kihei to the summit, hitting the road just prior to 530 AM. There was no traffic. The road up and down the mountain has dozens of curves, but they're not 'hair-pin' or hazardous. However, they are tedious and you have to concentrate, especially during daylight as bicyclists come whizzing down. We were a few minutes late for the sunrise, but it didn't matter as the summit was socked in with fog, mist and SLEET. We visited the rest room a half mile down the hill and drove up to the top, warmed ourselves in our rental SUV, then hit the road. My younger son opted out - it was wet and cold, he was tired and, bottom line, is not that experienced a cyclist. My older son and I blasted off. I highly recommend wearing WEATHERPROOF bicycling gloves. My padded leather-palmed gloves with nylon backings got drenched in the mist and sleet and my fingers got numb. At around 8000 feet the skies cleared, but my fingers took another 15 minutes (within my back-up dry gloves) to warm up. Nothing serious, but the feeling is pretty miserable. Cold fingers make you shiver. The bikes were great. Heading down the straights I hit terminal velocity all the time, I couldn't pedal fast enough to keep up with gravity. My son, who had much less drag, stayed very far ahead of me. The bikes only had rear derailleurs - I guess that's the norm now? And the disc brakes didn't get mushy. I braked in the curves a few times to keep from crossing the line. I know that's not too safe, but I never felt the bike lose its fat-tired grip. I got a kick out of the quick-action seat release. I guess that's kind of a new gimmick. Shortly below the main visitor center, we experienced beautiful views of Maui, from coast to coast across the central valley. Remember that commercial bicycle tours are NOT allowed to the summit; they can take you up to the park entry at about 6700 feet. Only YOU can take a bike to the tippy top at 10,023 feet. The curves are not as tight as characterized. They are "hairpin" only in the sense that the curves bulge out, but they aren't scary at all. I know I was doing 30 MPH+ on the straights and slowed down well in advance of the curves to 12-15 MPH. Basically, you need to adhere to the signs: all the curves are posted as 15 or 20 MPH for cars. I'm a bit of a weenie and overweight, with a higher center of gravity than most, and slowed down probably more than you will. Most of the ride is pastoral with a 1/2 mile or so of pines thrown in. It's tranquil to enter into a groove but be wary of microclimates and unexpectedly slick roads. All in all, though, the descent is incredible, the views awesome, and the road safe. We ended our tour back at Krank's where they offered us a "Mulligan," an extension for the bikes to catch the sunrise the next day. We said, "no thanks." However, as we had a few hours to kill, they agreed to swap one mountain bike out for a smaller one for my wife to ride. After lunch, my wife and older son cycled around Kihei. Not a lot of fun because of the winds, but we did it and appreciate Krank's letting us use the full 24-hour rental window. In summary: Krank's: 5 stars. They have great gear and service here and don't cheap out on the bikes you're renting (my helmet was kind of dingy, though). Sunrise: 2 stars, the sleet being a real drag.
