    Rental bike
    Corey T.

Rented a electric mountain bike at Krank and had the time of my life biking in the Makawao Forest. We tried a series of pump tracks by the parking lot and then did loops on the lower section of the Pineapple Express trail. Best mountain bike riding for me ever! By far the best activity on the whole island of Maui. Krank staff were helpful and efficient. I will be renting for sure each and every time I visit Maui.

More stains on the jersey. This was how it was sold to me. I did wash it after my ride, and it did clean up a little.

My visit at this bike shop was the worst I've ever experienced in the many bike shops I've visited. They didn't take the time to measure me nor was I able to test ride the bike prior to picking it up. When I picked up the bike it was way too big, the top tube was riding up my crotch. When I brought this to their attention (or at least to Gentleman #1) he didn't care and told me they provided a tool kit so that I can make the adjustments myself. (The tool they provided was totally corroded). I then asked if they can pump up the tires to 75psi. Gentleman#2 (the kid that tuned/checked the bike) was about to pump it up but Gentleman#1 told me if I wanted the tires pumped to a specific PSI that they had a bike pump at the front of the store....these are just a few rude comments made by Gentleman#1 which I think actually surprised employee/Gentleman #2. I also bought a $90 tribal jersey which I saw online weeks before. As you can see from the pictures it was very, very stained. I bought it anyways because I really like the design and hoping the stains would come off with a little bleach. Gentleman #1 didn't even apologize for the stains, he didn't care. I did get 10% off not because of the stains but because I rented a bike. Fast forward the next day. I start pedaling up Baldwin St and what do you know, the shifting was off. The chain was making a clicking noise when I shifted to cog #25 and was even worse when I shifted to cog #22, in fact I could even use that gearing. This shop seems more equipped for Off Road Cycling.

Since moving up country Krank cycles has been my go to shop decided my giant hybrid bike needed some TLC and Krank cycles was helpful and really doing a full tuneup when I picked up the bike they made some final adjustments and I took it on a test drive at the owner Moose is encouragement it really road much better than when I brought it in a bicycle was kind of a machine and a musical instrument at the same time so fixing a bike is a bit more of an art than a science I thought they did a good job it's really great to take a bike on a ride after a fresh tuneup feels like a new bike

Rented an e bike for the forest trails. Had a blast. Originally wanted to do the skyline trail but closed due to severe storm damage. Great guys, hooked me up with discount on shirt and jersey since I rented a bike. Really recommend these guys if you're looking to rent a real bike.

Everyone at Krank was awesome from start to finish. When we arrived in Maui our weather wasn't the best, and a schedule change was accommodated no questions asked. The staff was professional and kind, took time to suggest routes and alternatives, took the time to fit the bike, my pedals and my Wahoo Mount. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience with a better group of folks

We were able to get two full suspension bikes and get out to shred the Makawao forest. Pineapple Express is a really sick trail with fun and good shred for any skill level. Certainly worth it, and the uphill pedal is fun and beautiful. Be extra certain to check the bike before it goes out. We had a great time riding, but just sanity check that the last person didn't cause issues. Specifically check the limits on derailleurs (Try and see if you can push it so the chain goes off the top of the cassette) and the spokes are all tensioned. These bikes must be getting shredded, as both of ours were dinged up a bit... but we went out and had a blast on them ourselves so such is the life of a rental bike!

    Skyline Descent

Rented bikes w a few friends for the Haleakala Skyline descent. My diamondback release was set up well for shocks/suspension & my weight & mechanically solid. Rest of the bikes seemed to have no issues. We had one person break a collarbone and the park service unlocked all the gates including the final goat gate and were able to pick the person up in a 4x4 and transfer them to an ambulance. We were late getting down and the shop negotiated a reasonable after hours return fee far lower than typical given the circumstances. I highly recommend Krank and would rent from them again.

At least the difficult hike back was beautiful!

****Warning from very experienced MTB riders!!! Check your bike before leaving! Confirm you have enough tools!! Don't waste an entire day like we did!**** We rented two MTB bikes for the day Transition Patrol (no longer on website and BMC Speedfox). Because of rain we ended up riding the PoliPoli trails. The guy at the shop provided a trail map (with very little info) and barely offered trail suggestions. We felt like we were a huge inconvenience to the employees during our 15 minutes at the shop during rental pickup. There was no overview of the bikes, suggestion for fitting they just pointed to them and walked away and handed us a one wedgie pack with a couple of tools. While my husband wheeled his bike out he noticed play in his front wheel. He asked the mechanic to look at it and his response was "yeah, the front bearings are blown...be careful" ... and he walked away. We take responsibility for not pushing for a replacement bike. We take the bikes to the trail and make some mild adjustments for fit. This is when my husband realizes his dropper post doesn't work, it would collapse once he sat on the saddle. Luckily he had enough post to raise it manually. We head down to the boundary trail and start the ride. 2.5-ish miles in my husband flats. We pull out the tool kit to realize that: one, the wheels do not have tubeless setup, we only have one tube for 2 bikes, there is no c02, the tube was a DH tube (not easy for very experienced rider to replace) and the pump is old as $$$$ and it doesn't work. So now we realize our only choice is to hike the 2.5 miles back....literally up hill the entire way. While hiking back my husband's front tire flats. Awesome!! Great thing we don't hAave another tube! We return the bike to the shop and explained our experience... our response from their employees: 1: "What!? That plump is brand new!!" - no it's not! One piece was missing (see photo) 2: You gave us one tube for 2 bikes! "So? That should have been enough!" 3: Why don't you have tubeless setup on these bikes? The wheel set is compatible on both "that would be too much of a hassle" wow! We have rented bikes in East Burke VT, Bend, Or, Whistler, BC, Ireland, Moab, Philadelphia & many surrounding areas. We have almost 10 years of MTB riding, DH riding & road riding, we own and maintain all of the bikes for these disciplines. No compensation was offered, no care was given by the employees to the horrible once in a lifetime experience we missed out while in Maui. We have never received such poorly maintained bikes partnered with horrible service from start to finish. We foolishly anticipated a call after we left when they realized everything we said was true....nope!! *Note- we do take responsibility for not doing our due diligence with confirming the bike specs (tubeless setup), checking the toolkit had basics, and test riding the bike prior to leaving (to identify broken dropper post) and not demanding a different bike once the hub issue was identified. We were just too stoked to ride. *

Saturn and Uranus on Krank's borrowed rack outside the shop. They even installed the rack and loaded the bikes.

The "are you chill" questions on registration are relevant, and pleasantly reciprocal. In detail... As is made super clear up front, we were renting a vintage Westy for some camping around Maui. Warts and all. If folks aren't reading the bold print while making their reservation, then they are in a world of grumpy disappointment. After a somewhat last moment pickup reservation on our part, we were met by a nice lady who drove the three of us to Aloha Outdoors in Kihei. She not only checked us out on the van, but also ensured we were set with camping paraphernalia (chairs, etc), gave us a solid understanding of island options available and not available to us. We had already booked ourselves at Waianapanapa and Camp Olowalu, but were thankful for the miscellaneous detail. Our Westy was on the worn side of their fleet. The ice box was out of order, we were using the backup range by the first morning, little blemishes here and there, missing little bits like the front chair tables, etc. After 172k miles it is expected. Nothing dramatic. Driving the Westy was a bit more than initially expected. I've been behind the wheel of '72 VW Bus and other '60-'70 model cars, but was initially shocked by the driving characteristics of our Westy. It took 30-60 minutes to get into the safe groovy of driving her. (And once I was back home, I was hitting the brakes on my modern car too hard!). TL;DR: break early, having driving experience with older cars is super beneficial. Regardless of driving stress, it was an amazing trip. We had the black sands beach of Waianapanapa to ourselves at times, we met lots of great people, amazing sights, waterfalls, shave ice, etc. "Do you live Aloha?" Yeah. And Aloha Outdoors does too. On my last full day I backed the Westy into a rock. A bunch of bondo popped off the rear passenger wheel well. *Crap*. Afterwards I called the hotline to explain myself. The gentlemen was not pleased and said someone needed to inspect it when the VW was returned the next day. The next day the intake crew was unpulsed, photographed the damage to the owner, and ... I never heard back. Aloha goes both ways, and I appreciate that with these folks. My son still talks about this trip. "Makapipi" is his favorite new word. WE still talk about this trip. Highly recommended, get a Westy while you can.

This made my time on Maui absolutely unforgettable. From the minute we were picked up at the…read moreairport to the minute we were dropped off, I was happy, comfortable, and excited about van life. We got the light blue van with automatic transmission (road to Hana with a manual trans-no thanks!) and Noelle went through the van's features thoroughly before giving us a map of the island and circling all the camping spots available to us and our van baby. After giving us our camping chairs and wishing us a great time, we were off! We drove the road to Hana with no issues, camped in the rain, camped in the wind, by the beach, under streetlights and in the middle of nowhere. This van trip was so much more than accommodations and transportation; it was a literal and figurative vehicle for the kind of life I want to live. Staying in a hotel on a tropical island is nice; you can sleep in AC, lounge by the pool. shower and change in privacy, eat 5 star food and never ever feel out of your element. Staying in a camper van is awesome; you can sleep under the stars next to the ocean, lounge on a remote beach and then nap there, cook inventive, delicious meals with your camping partner, enjoy their company, and be bored enough to do things you wouldn't normally do (talk story for hours, play cards, snuggle up and watch the sun set for an afternoon). It was pretty incredible to actually spend multiple days worth of quality time with my husband, not just occupy the same space while looking at separate screens. You meet so many people who love "your" van, who want to tell you all about the van they used to have, and who embody the elusive aloha spirit that makes human interaction worthwhile and meaningful. We made several friends who dined with us on my glamorous one burner concoctions, or who entertained us with their stories from so many various walks of life over beers shared in camp chairs around the van's "living room". The van isn't perfect- it's 30 years old, and obviously is not a rolling Hilton. If you're creative, adventurous, and willing to see the bright side of any situation, you will LOVE Aloha Campers. Sure, we had to pull over a few times so Bluebell could cool down, and the E-brake light stayed on the entire trip. The back door flew open once in transit, and one morning I woke up with wet toes after some heavy sideways rain. The fridge never worked, and the cooler only kept our beer cold for three days. But those experiences just didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. We lived in a VW van, courtesy of Aloha Campers, on freaking Maui. Plain and simple. We cannot wait until we have a van of our own, and it was all because of this trip. MAHALO NUI LOA!!!!

An electric bicycle is a fabulously fun way to explore Maui, since it provides just the boost needed to get up the hills as if they were much flatter, evens out your speed between uphill and downhill, and raises your average speed, while keeping it comfortably in the fun 'biking' zone, rather than the motor cycle zone. We were using the bike to get up and down the steep (7-12%) grades around where we were staying at 600 ft elevation while keeping it fun. It worked great, even for the less fit. These are bicycles with electric assist hub motors, not scooters. You pedal as much or as little as you like, and use the assist as much or as little as you like. It's a fun way to extend your range, keep the whole group together when they may range in fitness, and 'level out' those hills.
