We've been season pass holders at snowshoe for 16 years, and we've tried all the restaurants. I think this was the best lunch we've ever had. I had been here years ago and it took forever. We played it smart and came at about 11:15, so I can't comment on service times others have had. But it's 11:45 and we're happily signing the check. I've been vegan since the early summer, and while I'm really happy to see vegetarian centric reviews, I don't agree that this place doesn't have options. They had some great soup and there is a vegan sandwich on the menu. Our server Dustin and the chef were very accommodating of my request to make a taco version of the eggplant sandwich. My only complaint is lack of free chips and salsa. Free chips and salsa is expected at a Mexican restaurant. read more

Worst service I have ever received. The waiter asked several times if he could take our food when we were clearly still eating. My boyfriend also ordered a 4848 margarita and it had no tequila in it so we paid $14 for lime juice. So bad I don't even know where to begin. Some friends and I ate here for the first time at a recent gncc race that was being held at snowshoe. We have been up there probably at least 8 times so we are aware of what the other places offer and what to expect. First the price. I paid 7 bucks for what looked like got scrapped out of a tv dinner tray onto a plate. The only thing that made me not believe it was is I know even the cheapest of microwave meals taste better then what they gave me. I have no idea how they where able to make chicken smothered in sauce so dry I had take a drink after every bite. My friend ordered some tacos and they where a joke. They where so small you could almost eat them in one bite if not for the horrible taste of the meat. To top off everything the service was horrible. We had to wait forever to get our waiter back at our table and we had to ask the woman who was working the front door to refill our drinks as she walked by. After we got tired of waiting for the waiter to pick up the money so we could leave we decided to just take the cash up to the front. On our way up my friend was talking to some people he knew and was telling them how bad the food was and how they got tired of waiting and the waitress walked by and yelled "If you can't see we are kind of busy" with a rude tone. After we got someone to take our money at the front by the bar we walked out only to hear the waiter yell something about her not working for free or something. Totally unprofessional and rude woman. We will be back at snowshoe next year but we will never eat at this joke of a place ever again. Go anywhere else up there for better food and service. read more

We stumbled into this restaurant when the power went out one early afternoon just after exiting the lift and we are so glad we did. The staff were amazing and upbeat! We ordered margaritas and chips with guac, queso and salsa. The margs were delicious, and we may have ordered more than one! The chips were good, as was the guac and queso. The salsa was not so good. We returned the next day when the power was on. The taco salads were delicious and fresh. Once again the margaritas did not disappoint! They also use biodegradable straws which is a plus in my book! Before I get to the details, let me first instruct the reader to go eat somewhere else. This restaurant is bad, overpriced, and you'll likely leave hungry. If that's what you're looking for in a dining option, then, by all means, you do not need to continue reading. If you do, however, prefer restaurants that provide quality food at a fair price that leaves you satisfied, the Sunset Cantina in Snowshoe Village is simply not for you. I did not think it was possible to screw up a Mexican restaurant experience so badly. But it happened. The Sunset Cantina committed this crime at approximately 8 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2015. The victims were an innocent and unsuspecting crew of 10 young adults intent on demolishing some delicious Mexican food after a long day of great skiing. See the major details of this crime below: Chili Lime Marinated Chicken Fajitas ($19): I have never seen a look of despair quite like the one on my friend's face when he received his plate of the very much not-sizzling strips of chicken that looked like wet rolled-up napkins. I get that most Mexican restaurants overcharge for fajitas these days. When one orders fajitas, he or she is typically willing to overpay for the complete assurance that they will be 100% full and possibly hurting from eating their meal, and I can understand why some restaurants exploit this attitude by charging higher prices. But if a meal of fajitas can't deliver on any of the crucial levels (taste, quantity, and sizzle), we can't possibly stay silent and let these people get away with it. Grilled Chicken Tortas ($15): Does the act of taking a half sandwich and cutting it into two pieces truly produce two sandwiches? The good folks at Sunset Cantina certainly believe so. The combined size of the "two" tortas might be just short of a 5" sub. Oh, it comes with fries. Beef Tacos ($12): Wow. Where to start? The beef tacos experience was the "1st degree murder" equivalent of food crimes. I cannot name one redeeming quality of this joke of a meal. The two "tacos" presented on the plate was nothing short of a double whammy of embarrassment and awfulness. First, let's address the "bang for your buck" element of these things. The tortillas used for these tacos we're approximately 3 inches in diameter. I don't even know where to find tortillas that small. Honestly, you could finish your entire plate in four awful bites. For those of you not following closely, that's approximately $3 per awful bite. Second, the taste. These things tasted bad. I would be more forgiving if a beef taco wasn't arguably the easiest meal in the world to throw together with minimal effort. Grocery store flour tortillas, shredded cheese, ground beef, lettuce, and a long braid of hair would have been an enormous improvement over what was served. Was there even any beef in these tacos? Most likely it was a mixture of ground pale pug with a hint of diced mooseman hooves and absolutely no trace of cow. The image of that plate of "food" will forever give me the bugaboos. Beans and Rice: One of our tablemates unwisely ordered a side of beans and rice to compensate for the beef tacos disaster. Traditionally, beans and rice at a Mexican restaurant go together as effortlessly as Dr. Quinn and Sully. Sunset Cantina would not have it so, apparently. Plain white rice. Plain kidney beans. Nothing else. This side plate was truly an additional insult to the injury that was the beef tacos. Another win for Sunset Cantina, and yet another heartbreak for our table. Conclusion: I'd rather spend the rest of 2015 stuck in a windowless room with the kids from Laguna Beach or have no arms and legs than eat another meal at Sunset Cantina. The entire dining experience hurt like a swift kick to the groin by a rodeo bull. After paying our comically overpriced bills, our group bolted like a pack of hungry running wolves back to our condo and immediately demolished the remainder of our snack supply to remedy the nearly irreversible damage that had just been done. Sadly, I will not be able to post up outside the Sunset Cantina entrance and protect others like Toto protects Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. This could be an inflated review because all I'm really rating is the nachos and the service. Both of which would get 5 stars. The nacho cheese sauce was bangin' and the server had brought me my next drink before I even finished my first which was awesome. We ate during not peak hours but I was impressed by the friendliness. OH and the beef on the nachos was sooooooo GOOD. It was slow cooked overnight and had so much flavor. It wasn't cruddy ground beef like at most restaurants. I will return to this place for sure. Our waiter here was very nice - the food though - good God, it was horrible. It's all pre-made, likely from a freezer. I'm sure it's hard getting fresh ingredients up here, but I ordered the fish tacos and the fish smelled and the texture was more like chicken. Couldn't eat the tacos so tried to eat the rice and beans as I was starving, and the rice was crunchy. The bloody was even brutal. Good service, food was not good. I had salad- chicken was pre-cooked, cold and without any flavoring. Nachos had fake cheese on them and even that was lacking. Portions are on smaller side and you pay $4 per person for chips and salsa. It reminded me of cafeteria food... How do you mess up Mexican?! read more

This restaurant is the actual worst thing ever. We were so close to going to the pizza place but the wait was 30 minutes shorter at this well whatever it is. The only good thing about this restaurant is that it gave my family a good laugh at how bad it was. Top 5 bad things about this restaurant 1. The food was horrendous. You would think that someone could make a tiny 3 inch beef taco in 2 hours but that is not the case at Sunset Cantina. Also the rice was basically uncooked Uncle Bens Minute Rice. 2. Not sure why this Cantina received so many bad reviews. The house margarita was okay -- they mentioned that the mix was housemade but it definitely tasted like it was more of a pre-mixed situation. Limited vegetarian options, but they accommodated where they could. I had the kids burrito, vegetarian style, which meant it was stuffed with quinoa, and an array of roasted veggies. Perfect size and delicious. Guacamole was also very good. I'll definitely be back on my next visit to Snowshoe! read more

$50 for two of us plus tip. 2 mojitos and 2 Cantina burritos no cheese, no sour cream. The black beans are veagn (no ham stock) and an "heirloom tomato salad with avocado, no mozzarella! I asked for extra avocado instead. The "heirloom"salad came out overdone with a mixed green salad on top that overtook the good stuff. I seriously doubted the tomatoes were heirloom.where I live they are expensive at Balducci's or Whole foods and these tomatoes resembled regular house tomatoes. Hardly any avocado. Nothing organic. Basically the burritos were dry and made Chipoltes vegetable burritos at $8 taste a million times better. Ended up hitting Chipolte en route there off hwy 81 and also on the way home around 950pm. equally good both times. Both locations didn't offer tofu options so i just stuck with vegetables and no cheese. great. read more

Service here was abysmal at 6:30pm on a Saturday in early March. I shudder to think what it must be like in January and/or holiday weekends during ski season. I don't think I have outrageous expectations for my server: water; the food and drinks I order to arrive; to not feel rushed. At Sunset Cantina, my husband and I placed an order for two apps and told our waitress we'd hang onto one menu as we'd probably order more in a bit. We then had to flag her down to ask her for water. Not water refills: our first glasses of water, to fill the empty glasses she had seen while taking our order. Just as our first app arrived, she brought us the check. Okay...guess we won't be ordering more. The second app never arrived, yet we had to flag our waitress down to let her know, as she never so much as glanced at us, let alone checked in on how we were doing. The restaurant was moderately busy, but not to the point that this lack of service was comprehensible. On the bright side: the nachos were pretty good. read more

They recently changed this to a dinner only , more of an upscale place to eat. New menu, no more tacos or free chips. We gave it a try and were blown away by the customer service. The wait staff was top notch, the chef was outstanding, and the manager who ran the place was running around making sure everyone was taken care of during the meal. Sunset Cantina was bend-over-backwards accommodating for dietary restrictions and also kid friendly. I would highly recommend this place to eat dinner while staying on the mountain. Great drinks, great food, great service!!!! 5 star!!!! if you feel you have any issues with your meal- please ask to speak to the manager - she truly cares about your experience at Sunset Cantina. I never write reviews but our experience at Sunset Cantina was so bad I had to warn others! Margaritas taste like lime juice, service is very slow (the table next to us left after waiting an hour and a half for appetizers), the food was tasteless and a sorry excuse for Southwest/Tex-Mex, and the price was ridiculous (we spent $200 for four adults, one child and four adult beverages). Avoid this place and head up to Soaring Eagle to eat at South Mountain Grille...they know how to cook and the service is impeccable. read more

Came in for happy hour after a day of runs on the slopes to find the staff enjoying a happy hour of their own. I witnessed the wait staff along with the cooks loitering around the end of the bar where one of the bartenders, young blonde, was mixing up different drinks and experimenting them on the staff. Also, as soon as a few local snowboarders came in the whole staff began pouring shots with them. It was quite obvious that there was no management on staff as they were poking fun at that exact point. The snowboarders received more attention than the paying patrons who were in there for a bite and a cocktail and I am sure the drinks that they were consuming were off the books as not once did the bartender enter in the computer an order for a drink when she was serving these guys. The chips are good though and it is in a convenient location just off the slopes. Maybe I am just a bit sour that we were not used as drink guinea pigs for the bartender that day but maybe you will have better luck than we did. Shoulda gone to HOOTS! read more
