We came pretty early and we're seated quickly and served promptly as well. We tried the scratched in rum and Coke, which seemed a bit high priced for what it was ($16). We also had a strawberry lemonade, which was delicious. We started with the bacon wrapped scallops, which were pretty good but rather small. For our main courses, we tried the cod, fried fish dinner and the lobster boil which came with a nice salad. Both were a good flavor, but we did find ourselves hungry again in about an hour. This could just be the seafood effect too- as sometimes it's not as filling and we had hiked a lot that day. We also never had our waters refilled, or a jug left for us (like many places had done) but the servers were very kind and friendly. Ambiance wise, the blinds being drawn make the view feel blocked but it is bright and has a floral theme. The tables are close together and as we were leaving it was getting busier so may get to know your fellow diners in some spots. They also had a nice cafe downstairs which had a nice selection of drinks, coffees included and to go sandwiches etc. Overall we liked this place but the cost for leaving hungry is what brought the total overall score down for us.

We were led in soon enough and brought to our table on the upstairs level. We thoroughly enjoyed the homey decor which hasn't changed since our last visit and brought back fond memories. Our server was a young man about to start his freshman year at university this fall. His attitude and work ethic really shows the best of Newfoundland. The food was solid overall. We enjoyed the bacon wrapped scallops, seafood chowder and especially the moose pie. If you just order one thing, GET THE MOOSE PIE! It's hearty with perfectly flakey pie shell and a blast of flavour inside. One disappointment was that they removed their cod tongue dish from their menu. As a uniquely Newfoundland dish, I hope they can bring it back for the next time we return to the island. Overall a wonderful experience and we would definitely come back the next time we visit!

The appetizers are tasty but main is a bit plain to my taste. - Bread and butter: butter is so soft with nice scent of herbs, bread is also tasty. We found that the bread in Newfoundland is generally more sour than average. - Root vegetable salad: Very creative dish. Varieties of veggie include squash and carrot are cut into nice thin pieces. Burnt almond and wild rice were the highlight of the dish. - Mushroom on bread ($22, not on the menu): I really enjoyed the creamy flavour of the mushroom. - Cumen crusted lamb leg with couscous: it was not bad. The meat itself doesn't have much flavour but it goes really well with the sweet sauce. - Cod with sun dried tomatoes: The fish is fresh but overcooked. - Halibut and scallop ($52, not on the menu): Again, everything is fresh but the fish is overcooked and flavoureless. The wait staff was on top of everything, too. We completely underestimated the size of the entrees, as both of us ordered the pan-fried halibut. We both got a monster-size piece of fresh halibut. Both came with a mountain of steamed carrots, some broccoli, and we opted for baked potatoes. Everything here was great, and they did have a fairly good drink menu. We had a couple of the Quidi Vidi Iceberg beers in the cool blue bottles. If you're looking for a good meal to get your money's worth, Old Loft is a great choice.

We were camping in Norris Point and decided to hike the Tablelands on the other side of Bonne Bay. Driving there took us past Woody Point, so we stopped for lunch. ( You can also take a water taxi from Norris Point to Woody Point and back.) The Old Loft Restaurant is the rope loft of an old restored fishing shed. It's a charming, rustic spot. The dining area is half of the loft, and there are locally made handcrafts on display in the other half. Downstairs, there are more souvenirs and items made by local craftspeople, as well as baked goods for sale. My only two complaints about the restaurant are this: one, there are only windows on the ends, so it's a bit on the dark side (the craft areas are bright). Two, the chairs, made out of barrels, are cute but not overly comfortable. When we walked in, there was a mix of other tourists and locals. Seeing locals is usually a good sign! On to the food. We both had hot turkey sandwiches with fries. I also had dressing and gravy on my fries, a Newfoundland favourite. We split a basket of onion rings. The onion rings were hot, light, crispy, and huge! They were like doughnuts in size, and delicious. Wish I had some now... The fries were hand-cut and cooked just right. The turkey sandwich was open-faced; the turkey piled on top of a thick, delicious slice of homemade bread. Yum! The turkey was topped with gravy and traditional Newfoundland dressing. I loved it. My husband loved his, too, except for the dressing. The dressing was loose breadcrumbs, mixed with melted butter, and flavoured with onion and summer savoury. Not what we're used to, and he doesn't like surprises. Portions are large so no way we could manage dessert! Too bad, I'm sure it was good. Finally, my beverage of choice when eating out is iced tea. For me, a litmus test of a good, casual restaurant is whether or not they make their own iced tea, or just fob off a commercial can or fountain drink on me. Seriously, it's not hard to make iced tea! At minimum, you can brew strong tea, pour it over ice in a glass, and serve the glass with sugar & lemon wedge on the side. It's sooo much better than pre-made. Really. A lot better. A lot. I'm happy to report that the Old Loft not only makes their own, but it was the best I've had dining out: slightly sweet and lemony tart. Yum. Our waitress, the only one working, was friendly, attentive, and happy to join me in a little good-natured ribbing directed at my husband. I may never get back to Newfoundland, but if you go, and you're in the area, I recommend you try the Old Loft.
