We went to Earle's on a busy Sunday evening after a long day hiking in Gros Morne National Park. I had read several different reviews about this place being an institution in Rocky Harbour, and that was spot on. We arrived just at the right time when the wait list wasn't too long and got a table within a few minutes. The dining room was already packed. They didn't have a fantastic beer selection, but we were able to get a couple of cans from the new Western Newfoundland Brewing Company. After all of our hiking, we opted for a pizza to stock back up on carbs and prepare for more hiking the next day. We split a medium sized veggie pizza, and it was served piping hot and crispy around the edges. It was very good, and our hiking-derived hunger drove us to polish the whole thing off. The wait staff here was on top of everything, and couldn't have been more friendly. If we return to Rocky Harbour, we would definitely eat here again. read more

Who would have known - 24 flavours of soft serve ice cream!! Seriously - take your traditional soft serve, add your ingredients (much like a DQ BliZzard), casually blend and place it back into a separate machine to serve it up as a traditional soft serve twist. Tasty flavours like Black Cherry, Blueberry Cheese Cake, espresso, and more. Let's put it this way - we went three days in a row! The store also has a little restaurant they looked quite popular (I never tried), and a nice little trinket / gift shop featuring NFLD themed items as well as quality seal skin hats and purses. read more

Another solid Gros Morne restaurant in Rocky Harbour. The fish was better than another far more expensive restaurant we went to the other day. The halibut was really fresh and didn't have any fishy taste. The fish cakes were also buttery. It's not fancy and it's all fried but it's all good! read more

For a small town with limited options, this place is passable but it's unlikely you'll walk away overly impressed. We shared the moose burger and fish and chips. The burger was under seasoned and thin, with toppings applied as an afterthought. The fish and chips were slightly better but again, nothing compared to some of the versions we had elsewhere in the province. ‍ read more

I had rather burn a $50 bill in the campfire than eat here again. We were made to feel like we were a bother to the staff. When we asked if we could eat on the deck, they rolled there eyes, and with a sigh, said "fine, but you will have to order here and come back in to pick it up". They kept complaining that there were only two of them there that day. Fine. We ordered inside and went back in and picked it up and then ate out on the deck. We never received any service. It was clear that we were a nuisance to them. Fries were good. Burgers were just frozen patties. Save your money and spend it somewhere that will appreciate your business. read more

I've been going to Rocky Harbour for years and have watched Earles evolve from its roots as a video store (remember those!) to the full service diner, gift shop and convenience store it is today. The service is friendly and the food its very good, however the reason I go its that it continues to serve traditional Newfoundland food such as Toutons, fried bologna and jig's dinner. If you're visiting Rocky Harbour and want some traditional fare, Earles is one of your best bets. read more

Told that Earl's is the place to go in Rocky Harbour for a home cooked meal. As tourists, we decided we had to try a few local foods. We wanted to try the moose. Hint: it tastes like lean beef with a bit of an edge. I had the moose burger and my wife had the moose stew. We enjoyed both but decided moose was not as exotic as it first sounded :) The food was good. The portions generous. The server was very friendly and helpful. When we asked what "bakeapple" was (a Newfoundland berry that is orange-ish and about the size of a blueberry) our server offered to bring us a small sample of bakeapple jam. It is sweet and strong tasting - best in small amounts. This is a good local place, inexpensive, and good value. read more

See those "poor" and "terrible" reviews over on another review site?? Read them. Then drive on over and witness how incredibly well they describe a certain gal at the counter-- she's a nightmare. You walk into the place and it feels like a horror house because her miserable (I mean that literally, not in a derogative way!!) ) personality sucks every bit of life out of the room. I'm not kidding. The whole place felt depressed. Want to sit outside on one of the unoccupied tables which are literally one more foot away from her tables inside?? Not a chance toots! It's like you're asking her to walk over hot coals. And it was a really lovely evening!! She should have been fighting to serve outside!! We opted to get the food to go. It was great cod, and just ok chips. Honestly folks, we were bright and polite and nice from the get-go.... and she was dark misery from the first five seconds-- without reason. If you're that unhappy waitering, get another job. I did the job myself for years. I know it's tough. But I also know when someone just needs to get fired. She's the Nazi Soup Chef without the charm. Considering we met nothing but fabulous and often very funny people 99.9% of the time we were in Newfoundland, I guess we had to meet one rotten egg. read more

We had the privilege of being in Rocky Harbour over the weekend and we ate at Earles the entire time. Moose meat pizza, cod sandwich and the most amazing fish chowder packed with cod, halibut and scallops. What a treat. The owners, John and Ruby are the most wonderful people as well. Do yourself a favour and make sure you don't miss this little gem on any visit to this area. read more

Finest fish and chips in the Atlantic Provinces As an Englishman who has traveled the world, I have to say the pan fried fish and chips with scallops is the finest I have ever tasted. the freshest fish pan-fried in scrunchions and scallop's cooked to perfection is a meal you have to try. Ask for the fisherman's platter it is worth every penny ! As for deserts, the blueberry cheesecake was to die for. if you go at a busy period, you may not get seated immediately,but it is well worth the wait! Wow what a find. Since my last restaurant was so bad I decided to go there for dessert. I had their toutons with sirup. It is bread dough fried in a skilet. My mother in law used to make them and the one here reminded me of them and they were excellent. But the server was incredible. He was on time and a great smile and was just great. I wish I would have gone there for our meal because as people were stepping out all you could hear was great prase for the food. Newfoundland cuisine or at least what's popular seems to be all fried food. Earl's is no exception to that. We tried a cod burger and a chicken burger because we were not ready for the moose delicacies. The chicken sandwich was juicy and had a great crispy texture. The cod can be pan fried or deep-fried opted for pan and it was fresh tasting. The fries were a little soggy. We also tried a fish cake. It was nice but a little too salty for my taste. read more

Great place for a reasonably inexpensive meals. We had wanted Jig's Dinner, a local favourite, but it was sold out by 5:30! So I had the moose burger and my wife had the Earle's burger. Both quite good. The Qidi Vidi IPA beer was better than the local favourite Qidi Vidi Iceberg, to my taste. Recommended! read more

Long, long wait for a table on a cold, windy, damp July evening. Waited almost as long for the food. Was sat in front of an open window--was freezing, so we shut it. A few minutes later, a blonde girl came and opened it up again. Would have walked out without the food had husband not been determined to eat. Asked husband to get mine to go, and went out to the car alone. When they did come out later with my food, it was decent (nothing special, considering the wait), and there was a hair in the vegetables (not mine--my hair was braided). Didn't complain about the cold or the wait because it seemed so stereotypically American to complain, so I just sat there and took it until I couldn't anymore. On the plus side, son said they were the best french fries he'd ever had. So, there's that. Still, apparently this is a busy place on Sunday nights in July, so if you're up for a 45-minute wait, by all means, go. If not, go up the other end of town to Fisherman's Landing. read more
