I've seen so many good reviews that I thought I'd give it a shot. So absolutely disappointed! I ordered Ebi.....expected a nice large butterflied sweet shrimp on top of sticky rice....what I got were ridiculously skinny, two on each ebi because they were SO tiny, obviously precooked frozen thawed shrimp. Wow! Beautiful and fresh sushi. This beats all of the places I have tried in Richmond downtown and Henrico and Hanover County. The salmon is pink like it should be, the avocado garnishes are green like they should be. The rice is white and cool and fresh. The inside had a few patrons. I did not have it the dining experience because ordered takeout. There were about four couples dining in at 3:30 in the afternoon and they were enjoying themselves. I heard about Sun's Café from my mother a month or so ago. Her, my sister, and my stepdad ventured out of the house one evening looking for sushi. They (my mother) found Sun's Café on Yelp. My mother cannot eat out without consulting her food compass, Yelp, to point her in the right direction. It's close to home, which is few and far in-between when it comes to restaurants because we live in BFE (Bumble Frick Egypt). Apparently, it was quiet the experience for them. Going into this blind date with only a brief stalking of their yelp profile, my family took a risk and ended up at a hole in the wall that served monkey brains, sushi, and burgers all on the same menu. But, I guess that's the risk you take when you look for food in BFE. So, the other day, I finally got the chance to have my own Sun's Café experience. From my mother's description of the place, I was visualizing an eerie run-down shack with a worn banner on the front or side that had "Sun's Café" printed on it. I imagined it to be somewhere between the "abandoned but obviously occupied by crackheads" stage or the "prime candidate on an episode of Fixer Upper with Joanna Gaines'" stage. But to my surprise Sun's Café is currently getting an exterior face lift with a new paint job. When I pulled in I saw a cute, newly painted yellow and purple building, decent landscaping, and a large sign outside that I could see from half a mile up the road. While it is easy to seem like you have it all together on the outside, Sun's Café exterior was misleading (as some dating profiles can be when going on blind dates) because on the inside it seemed to be a jumbled, hodgepodge of furniture with random decorations and had an overall drab feeling. There was no sense of design, flow, or theme to the restaurant. Most sushi places that I have been to in the past have put some effort into submerging the customers into another culture. I was simply transported to a redneck twist of a sushi restaurant. As soon as I walked in, I received blank stares and then a woman who I have assumed to be the owner or co-owner of the establishment was casually sitting with customers and when I asked where to sit, she responded "anywhere you'd like, but not the floor". Personally, I appreciated her sarcastic humor. But being a part-time hostess, I winced at her comment. I have been trained to try my best not to offend customers, and sarcasm is easily mistaken as insulting. After sitting at a table, and not on the floor, we were given two menus. One was a sushi ordering menu. If you don't know what that is, it's a piece of paper with all the sushi rolls the restaurant provides with boxes next to them for you to check off. That is then taken to the back as your order ticket. The other menu included any item you would find at an American-style restaurant. I found this to be odd, since I thought this was a sushi place, but maybe the ability to get a burger at a sushi place is appealing to some. If the theme of Sun's Café is hodgepodge randomness, then I guess it isn't odd at all... DINNER IS SERVED. My sister and I ordered mozzarella sticks, and three rolls of sushi. I love mozzarella sticks and was just plain curious to see if this sushi restaurant would deliver decent mozzarella sticks. I was pleasantly surprised. They were delicious, gooey, and perfectly fried, better than most chain restaurants. Then came the sushi rolls. They were served on a piece of plywood which seemed unconventional, but the display was still very nice. These pieces of sushi were huge (a plus on a blind date). We had two California rolls: one plain, one crunchy, and then a crunchy shrimp tempura roll. Each roll was delicious and incredibly filling. The California crunch role was my favorite. It was wrapped in a light layer of fried breading and had a sweet sauce drizzled on top of it. The perfect mixture of sweet and salty. I will be returning for my next sushi craving. Overall Sun's Café was a casually leaving your number on the receipt at the end of the blind date experience. I enjoyed my time at Sun's Café and would be interested in coming back, but I didn't fall in love with Sun's Café. I left with a full stomach and not an empty wallet (crucial for a poor college student like myself). For an order of mozzarella sticks and three full roles of sushi it was only $27 dollars. Although, the outside appearance is misleading of the interior appearance, there was no atmospheric luxury to the place, the service was mediocre, and it is in BFE, I came for good sushi and that's exactly what I got. Actually, I got sushi that exceeded my expectations and crushed my assumptions. read more

The hostess and staff had no idea what was going on, and there was, "no room" at the hibachi station--even though there was an empty station because they had ONE chef on a Friday night. We were a little wary about a sushi restaurant in New Kent, but this place blew us away. It had huge sushi rolls, great prices, and a friendly staff. It is also has two restaurants with a normal cafe style menu with breakfast, lunch, and dinner so you don't have to get sushi if you are not in the mood. Sun's cafe is the last place you'd expect to find amazing sushi. I met up with a buddy here as it was the halfway point, driving through vineyards and losing cell service I was confused. I came up on a humble home turned restaurant which gave it a cozy feel. I ordered three rolls of sushi (I can't remember the names) and they were made to perfection. Living in Virginia Beach you'd think the quality of fish would trump this "mom and pop" restaurant, but it absolutely did not. What a hidden gem! Heading back from Williamsburg, desperately in search of something other than burgers or barbecue, when we found this place on Yelp. The sushi was excellent and reasonably priced. The regular menu was, surprisingly, not at all Japanese or even Asian. My friends enjoyed chili and fried trout. My niece and I tore into sushi. Everyone walked away with a happy belly. I rarely leave bad reviews but this place was a nightmare. It was a hot day and there was no central air conditioning so it was hot inside and smelled weird. We waited over 30 minutes for 3 sushi rolls (well it was supposed to be 4 but they forgot one) and they put the wrong sauce on one of them. I told them the item was not made as advertised (pointing to the menu where it clearly states the ingredients) and they told me I was wrong. Employees were shouting at each other in the kitchen. The sushi here really gets the job done! It's flavorful and quite mouth watering. The decor here is a bit off and out of style. The service is pretty average and typically okay. However if you and your guests go to the new hibachi grill here you MUST order something from the grill or you cannot sit there... even if everyone else you are with orders from the grill. This is our second visit there. Once about 5 years ago when they first opened and thought we would try again. Had the country fried steak special with instance mashed potatoes and Velveeta Mac and cheese. Wife had the hamburger steak which consist of a store bought ¼ burger cooked. Same potatoes and cheese. We both had a salad which was pitiful is all I can say. Did include a packet of blue cheese dressing. Institutional is a good way to but my meal. Like you had in the school cafeteria when you were young on plastic plates. Maybe in another 5 years. And I live 2 miles from there. read more
