Everything was delicious! So when you're coming up on the restaurant, it's easy to miss just because it's tucked in next to another building. It's a family operation so the owners also doubled as the cook and the serving staff. They were very friendly and we talked throughout lunch. Prices were VERY reasonable and the sushi was fresh. Sun's Cafe has everything you need. You need breakfast? They have breakfast. A burger? Sure thing. Sushi? No problem. Liver and onions? Yup, got that too- but not until after 11. Located in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by rolling fields, ribbons of highways, and ever growing pockets of new housing, Sun's is at the crossroads of old and modern day America. A photo of the original building (still there, but now just a small section) hangs above the register. The owner told us that the photo was from the 30s, and I'm positive that this restaurant will stay exactly as it is until the family that runs it decides that they need a change. Because we are exactly the right group of people for such an eclectic menu, we ordered breakfast with a side of fried dumplings and sushi. We were going to order fried pork chops, but since it was before 11 our request was denied. There might have been some friendly attitude involved, and it might have made us decide to time our next visit for lunch or dinner. The fried dumplings and sushi were good. The dumplings were deep fried, but not overly greasy. The sushi and sashimi were not evenly cut, but were generous in portion and were fresh. The hamachi was served a bit colder than I'd have liked, but we were ordering it during breakfast hours, so I can't be upset. Breakfast was everything that makes me happy with a place like this. Light pancakes, crispy bacon, and creamy chipped beef. I'm positive that the chipped beef was not made in house, but it was served with just the right toast to sauce ratio. Our friend ordered the ribeye and was happy with his thinly sliced steak and eggs. Honestly, the only thing I wish Sun's had on the menu are a few hot Asian dishes, even if it was a rotation of daily specials. Stumbled upon this place on our way home to Wake Forest from Williamsburg. This is a hole in the wall restaurant not close to anything and sort of off the grid. The first impression is definitely not the best due to its location and exterior/interior appearance. Seem to be run by a family and when we first walked in - the atmosphere if rather concerning. They were packed and busy and there's not one person able to greet us within a few minutes. The interior could certainly use dusting and a little organizing - but of course we were here for the food. The people that work here could certainly be more friendlier (I'm not sure if it was just us since we were outsiders) but they seem to get along w/ some of their customers (perhaps locals). Moving on to the food - has your typical Sushi menu and other Asian entrees including some traditional American like chicken tenders. Consider my previous statement on appearance and friendliness of the staff, we were unsure of how the food was going to be so we started with chicken fingers and four sushi entrees. Food took longer than expected, but it's OK, we are family that is open to trying out new things. Food came out hot and fresh from what I can say - so the extra wait is certainly acceptable. The tenders are fair portions and the batter was good - but most importantly it is cooked thoroughly. Now to the sushi - for being off the grid sushi shack, I'm surprised how fresh the ingredients were. In fact, my kids and I even ordered a second round because of how it was prepared, taste, and freshness. Minus one star since the staff can use some lesson in customer service :/ the older gentleman that prepared our sushi was certainly one of the friendliest out of the four we had interaction with. Will I go back again? certainly for the food! They also have an American menu for those divided families where some crinkle their nose at the idea of sushi, but others love it. Looks like they have a pretty decent kids memo too. Coming from Vinnaterri golf course, found this place in the middle of nowhere. Doubt it was a sushi restaurant especially since sushi needs to be fresh. Started to order non sushi items, but when other customers told us to try the sushi, was shocked on how fresh and how good the sushi was.
