We would give ZERO stars if possible…read more Horrible - The actual home in Gilbert, AZ, and the local staff were great. Gloria, the main attendant, was fantastic. She is very caring and loving and helped mom through her last couple of months. She slept by mom's bedside while mom had "sundowners" and made sure mom was safe and comfortable day and night. The problem came with the owner of the home, Raj. He was not easy to deal with at all. Mom moved in on May 18, 2024, and died soon after on July 19, 2024, almost 2 months to the day. Mom was on a month-to-month contract with Christina's Assisted Living, meaning her monthly fee needed to be deposited into their account, or a check written, on or before the 18th of each month. We had no issues with Christina's until her July payment. Her July 18, 2024, payment was submitted by check (into their onsite drop box) on Monday, July 15, 2024, but apparently it was not picked up by the staff. We received a call at 9:30am on July 19, 2024, that Mom had died about 1/2 hour earlier. Her death was literally one day after her July fee was contractually due. The phone call received was from the Office Manager and she said, "our condolences to you on you mom's passing, did you submit payment for July yet?" When we told the Manager the check was in the drop box, she immediately drove over and picked up the check. After going quickly to be with mom, meeting with the Hospice Nurse and securing a funeral home to pick her up, we texted Raj and asked him not to deposit the check so we could work out a prorated rate since mom had only stayed one day in July. In the same text, we asked if he would accept payment for one week. His immediate text reply was "no, as per our contract, we rent the room on a monthly basis, whether the resident stays for a day or for the whole month, it takes 3 to 6 weeks for us to rent that room again, so any proration or refund is not possible." Proration was completely possible. Proration was just not acceptable to Raj. He is all about money, he is not in it for our loved one. His claimant of needing to market the room was a farce as she was sharing the master bedroom with another resident and there was nothing to clean, market, move, repair or paint. Receiving a response of "no, you signed a contract" was hurtful, uncompassionate, and really showed us the lack of character Raj has. We are EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED with Raj and his lack of willingness to work with us on proration and his blatant money-hungry grab. He does not appear to be looking out for our loved one's best interest, he is just in it for the money. Turnover is high in Assisted Living homes, and he appears to just want to go after your loved ones' money. He welcomes the sicker the better individuals so he can double dip on monthly fees as they pass through the home quickly. We asked for Raj's assistance on the $3200 fee because we needed the money to take mom back to Indiana where she wanted to be laid to rest. Mom didn't have much and her Social Security income was extremely limited. She had no estate, no savings and nothing to sell to be able to cover the cost of the trip back home. The $3200 that Raj took from her for one day of "dying" there would have been enough to take her to Indiana where she wanted to be with her family. We recommend you DON'T sign a contract with Christina's Assisted Living (they have 2 homes, the one in Gilbert is where mom was). Raj is just in the death business. He doesn't care about your loved ones. He certainly didn't care about ours. Christina's Assisted Living Home was a Hospice of the Valley recommendation, and we will be sharing our experience with them as well, so they don't recommend his home(s) either. End of life is hard on everyone and to have been treated so callously by Raj during this extreme time of grief, was inhuman and one of the worst experiences of our lives. Christina's Assisted Living/Gilbert has zero stars from us.

The caregiver was rude and abusive to my brother. She would yell at my brother and she did shove him once according to my brother. She was very frustrated with my brother. My brother didn't want to be near her so he would stay in his room in bed. They were constantly asking to put him in hospice, he wouldn't qualify for hospice. The owner was going to kick my brother out because he was falling out of bed. The owner did change his mind about kicking him out, most likley because that was not a reason to kick him out. They don't care about your loved one here only about getting your money and if you do exactly what the caregiver says. Don't send your loved one here.

Despite all the issues, I don't have this kind of money to waste in one year but his health has deteriorated dramatically by the lack of good nutrition in the dining room. At this time, at least seven other groups are moving out this month - so very high residential turnover because the food. You pay $2900 for a one bedroom with horrible food. Go shop around somewhere for the same money and get better food. Don't throw away your deposit like I have to by moving it your loved one there. Most aren't local and can't go take food and visit almost daily like I could and it is super unfortunate as the building has potential with nice layout and floor plans with beautiful trees. Additionally I received a call one day asking when he was moving because they rented out his place of which I had paid for through the entire month already. So I'm addition to keeping my $2500 they were planning to work on double dipping on the property we rented. He gave his notice that he would be vacating on or before a certain date late June. So Mid June they had decided they were going to assume his 30 day notice was from the date he was considerate enough to put his notice in, not the date we were moving. The site director is young and nice, but doesn't have the support to run a facility alone and the seasoned director who is supposed to be in charge is never around either. First the food has small portions, generally cold with horrible quality. He sends me pictures and I feel horrible that he can't get enough to eat. I made my way up the chain and called corporate office. The response was a call from the local cook. He didn't really care. No one from the leadership team called. He has had diarrhea at least five times since moving in and has lost at least ten pounds. Bees continue to congregate and he was told they would get to it when they can. He is allergic. See the pic right outside his window. He doesn't do activities but they seem nice enough. He doesn't use the transportation but I'm sure it works fine as well. He will be moving to a brand new facility with lots of light, encouraged use of the on property grill as well as gourmet food selections. He couldn't use the grill at Sunrise when he wanted despite what we were told during our tour. It was not an option to have use of the grill whenever he wanted it. The activities director (Mary) was the glue that held everything together and encouraged positivity throughout and she is no longer there and the vibe has just become bleak. Finally, we had two full bottles of medicine go missing and was reported but nothing was done.

I got a text from Emma that she was talking too much, walking around too much and coughing too much. She sounded more annoyed than concerned. She wanted to sedate her to calm her down. I said as long as it didn't change her personality. When we visited next she was over sedated and barely acknowledged us. But she was able to mention that there was a male caregiver that was rough and impatient with her. It was hard to know what to believe with her dementia. I asked about her meds making her so sleepy but they insisted it was necessary to help with her being combative. After this she rapidly declined and passed away after 2 months of being there. They said it was her dementia that just advanced quickly.. what really bothered us is the way the hospice company let us know she died - by texting me that they got a call from the group home, they were going there to check vitals and do we have a mortuary picked out. Not a phone call or even an "we are very sorry..." Also, after she passed we didn't hear one word from Emma or Mark offering condolences. Just that for the week after she passed, that we already paid rent for, it would not be refunded to us and that we needed to pick us her belongings. Doesn't really convince us that they cared.

I have been to the facility now to help a few clients with various issues and an array of conditions from stroke recovery to dementia/memory care patients. My standards are pretty high, but if/when the time comes, I can only hope that I am able to utilize a facility as nice as Canyon Creek for me and/or my loved ones.
