Hubby and I were looking for a simple breakfast place nearby during our stay in Wells. We spotted Sunrise Diner and decided to give them a whirl. They were fairly busy, only a couple open tables. We grabbed one and our server brought over a couple menus. Hubby ordered a bacon, egg and cheese on a plain bagel. I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll. Both were very fresh. The bacon was cooked to perfection. I especially loved the melty white American cheese. I grabbed a blueberry muffin to go. We enjoyed it as a snack later that day. It was moist and delicious! The Sunrise is a tiny little old school lunch counter tucked into Speculator, which actually doesn't even serve lunch on weekends (just breakfast, closing at 12:30). The fare is pretty standard but it is unusually well-prepared for a short order place, and the staff could not be friendlier, even under an incredible crush of customers. The place does have outdoor picnic tables - the inside is a little dim due to lack of windows, if whimsical in the decor, which is mostly jokey signs of the 'unattended children will be given espresso and a free puppy' - well, kitten - variety. Just be forewarned the place does get super busy during the summer season, but it is still there in the other three seasons, unlike a number of other places, particularly in sparsely-inhabited Hamilton County. The place is much improved since our last visit, and one suspects there's been a change of management, so nota bene concerning earlier reviews. read more

Worst experience. We walked in at 11:35 and weren't sure if we could seat ourselves or not. The staff let us stand there for an uncomfortable amount of time before we finally had to ASK if we could take a table. There are only about 5 and there were tables open, so this was not a crowd issue. There were several staff members, so this was also not a staffing issue. We were 5 minutes past the breakfast window (and in hindsight, I am wondering if that is why they let us stand there so long) so we had to order lunch. I ordered a veggie wrap .... FROM THE MENU .... And was looked at like I had two heads. The waitress said "what kind of veggie?" So I said all of them are fine (the menu listed onions mushrooms peppers spinach etc). My husband and daughter both reluctantly ordered grilled cheeses. My wrap arrives, all the veggies are RAW, raw mushrooms, huge slices of raw onions... seriously disgusting. The grilled cheeses ... also "raw" as in the cheese wasn't melted, and the tomato my husband requested was the top slice of the tomato. Place is a dump. Almost threw up when i saw how filthy it is. Good above the flat grill is disgusting. Coffee cups look dirty. I would never ever set foot in this complete dump ever again. The Meat Lovers Pancakes with bacon inside were very good. The bacon egg and cheese on a roll was also very good, as were the hash browns.

The diner is under new management, and has been nicely renovated. The food is really good and I would say is improved from my previous experiences at the diner. The staff are not overly friendly or talkative, except with locals, which is not unusual. I would recommend! read more

We found this little gem passing through Speculator NY. An unpretentious little mom and pop diner specializing in breakfast. We all had eggs, which were done to perfection. My husband had steak with his, which he stated was tender and delicious. The home fries were fresh and tasty, not the least bit greasy. Our waitress, Shannon, was not only friendly but an excellent waitress. The prices were some of the best I've seen in a very long time. My only complaint was that I didn't have room enough to try the coconut cream pie advertised! read more

Driving home from the Indian Lake area Sunday, our group was hunting for a hearty breakfast to keep us fueled on the long drive back to Rochester and were advised to stop at the Sunrise Diner by some locals. I wouldn't say that anything was majorly disappointing or exciting about the breakfasts we had. My girlfriend had some pancakes and bacon, both of which were fine but not a standout. I got a breakfast sandwich (my standby choice) and was happy to see that they had a better selection of meats for the sandwich than most places including Taylor pork roll and hash. I had never had the pork roll before so I went with it and was happy I did. To me, it seemed like slices of sausage that tasted a lot like ham and it worked really well on the egg sandwich. Service was fine and we sat outside to enjoy the beautiful morning. The interior is small and a bit on the greasy side most likely due to the fryers and probably their fresh house made donuts which we didn't try. Like I said before, this wasn't spectacular but I would stop by again if I needed some decent food on the way back from the Adirondacks or if we were staying in the area. read more

What's not to love about this diner? With an old school feel, friendly servers with small town charm, huge portions, great coffee and great prices! We were rained out at camp on Lewey Lake and decided to grab breakfast in town rather than try to stay dry and cook under a tarp. I'm so glad we did. I came here with a group of friends for breakfast, everything was fine up until the check came. We wanted to split the check and the older woman behind the counter who had nothing to do with our order told our waitress, "let them figure it out" so loudly in plain sight I was disgusted with the service. Despite that comment, we tipped our waitress beyond 20% regardless and because of our big party since it wasn't her fault. Next morning we decide to come back because the breakfast was priced fair, and another waitress gave us an attitude. Again we tip fair due to our large party but if you work in the service industry, check your attitude... don't smoke your cigarette and have it stinking up our food while you're practically holding it while we eat. If I hadn't convinced my group to tip beyond 20%, you would've gotten tipped super poorly and that's only cuz I've worked in the service industry and know how annoying it can be- but really...we were friendly, we were not difficult and we even stacked our plates neatly to be considerate. it's not a problem for me to split the checks myself if you give me a pen since it's such a big deal for you to handle. Check your attitude, and remember that slogan of yours on that big yellow sign. read more
