I visited Sunflour for the first time last week while in Pawling, NY. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The bakery itself was super cute and had a small town charm. Service was relatively quick. And the food was delicious! My breakfast sandwich (cheddar biscuit smash) was so good, I went back the next day to get another one! My family enjoyed their meals as well. The coffee was also great! I recommend getting there early. The first time I went was on Saturday morning around 8 am. No line whatsoever. Sunday morning, I went around 10 am and there was a line nearly out the door! All sorts of bagel flavors are available my favorite being the everything and jalapeño. Different bakery items are available, our personal favorite being the chocolate chip muffin which is HUGE. This place is a gem. Ordered for Christmas and drove up from NYC. Ordered pumpkin bread, apple pie, 3 gingerbread kits and Christmas cookies. Blown away - better than expected! The gingerbread house kits were the highlight of our holidays - 3 adults had a blast building over two days and the kits were so well done - gingerbread was perfect and lots of candies for decorating. The icing was perfect! Definitely will be ordering again next year. Everything was delicious - especially the apple pie. We forgot about it in the chaos of Christmas and didn't cut it until 5 days later...absolutely delicious! Christmas cookies...absolutely adorable and so good. Sunflour has only been open 3 weeks, but you can't tell because the store finishes, choice of decor, customer service and baked goods are really spot on! Cute shop! A great place to get a morning coffee or bagel. It was a pleasant experience aside from one encounter with one of the girls working behind the counter. Along with her apparent body odor, greasy hair, and very dirty finger nails, she had a very passive aggressive tone towards me while ordering my coffee and baked goods. I have been here a few times while doing business in Pawling and I keep wanting to really like the place given the limited choices in town to sit and relax a bit. One time I ordered two breakfast sandwiches that sounded good but the wait was too long and by the time I got them 20 minutes had gone by. There is relaxed service but this was just inefficient. The sandwiches themselves were dry and not worth the wait. Also, the front staff has pretty poor communication skills and would come back with inaccurate answers for why the wait was so long. They kinda shrugged their shoulders with a lack of urgency unable to seem to read the increasing time limit I hit before missing my ride and my train. What in gods name was going on in a kitchen that was not busy, had 2 people in it and me and one other as eating customers. Had the front staff communicated clearly to the back rather than shuffling to and from the kitchen as slowly as possible in a kind of passive aggressive dance, the cook might have received a different message and I would not have to ask what happened to 4 minute promise three times over. So I get in the car and get yelled at for making everyone late, and the sandwiches were still not ready. As we pulled away, I was met outside and the sandwiches handed to me with that bored teenager eye roll I so love to receive. So, I came back another time, and the scones were doughy and bland, all 4 I tried. Finally this last time, I experienced the same bland lackluster service, a small and kinda greasy sandwich with uneven deep fried potato chips, and good iced coffee. The chef came out with a nice smile and gave me my sandwich but no one asked me how my food was, nor asked me if I wanted anything from the dessert case. No upsell. 2 people out front with to skills for sales. Customers came in to ask questions about the goodies in the case and got different answers. Attention to detail is I guess not their strength. I often wonder why business invest in hiring such disconnected and emotionally flat front line customers service positions? Why put their businesses at risk? Do they not know better? Are the workers "family" ? Wouldn't one engaging and efficient and knowledgeable and interested person be preferable to bored, low energy detail missing ,poor communicating teens? It shows me that my customer experience is not even being considered nor is there an awareness of even basic professional standards. For a few bucks more I could go to McKinney and Doyle's and know for sure the products and service are strong. Sunflower has the potential to be superb and special but they sloppiness kills its value. read more
