I came to Brewster Pastry when I visited Brewster, NY with my dad and son this past August 2022. I'm in the process of a way too drawn out divorce being that we had no assets to split and only custody of the kid to figure out. I'm hoping, hoping, hoping any day now I'll hear about the paperwork that was submitted on September 1 and awaiting a judge's approval and signature. Anyway when I finally hear I am actually divorced my last name is going to be Brewster. I've started using it here and there anyway. But I figured a vacation to Brewster, NY might manifest the Brewster becoming my last name again sooner. This pastry shop was amazing, so many choices. I have tried this pace no less than 10 Times. Every time I end up throwing away what I've bought. Couldn't put my finger on it. There flaky pastries are hard at room temp and have a greasy feel and artificial aftertaste. The king cakes. The croissant. The elephant ears. Others have spoken about how hard the cookies are. These are usually signs of the use of hydrogenated oils instead of butter. Today I got a king cake ( third time in three years. Hard. Weird tasting and not tender the way the are every other place I've had them. Don't taste like butter. They taste like grease. This was last time. Brewster Pastry was, happily, able to stay open during all the COVID-19 craziness, keeping the communities around it well provisioned with wonderful baked goods. We finally tried those rounds of bread, which are soft, maybe almost like a Portuguese loaf, with a pleasant rise. Very kid friendly, but I was, in truth, hoping more for a tooth-cracking, Poilâne-style mini miche, given Thierry Danvin's origins. A small loaf, about 8" in diameter, is $3, which is a real steal for a bakery-sourced, bakery-fresh loaf. An almond croissant we tried today was filled with something that resembled pastry cream instead of frangipane. It was delicious, but not the traditional filling I was hoping for (and seem to recall getting in times past). Still, that croissant and the chocolate croissant were beautifully laminated as usual. A generously filled sausage "empanada" was nothing like any empanada I've ever tried, but rather reminded me of "curry puffs" or savory pastries found at Hong-Kong stye Chinese bakeries in Chinatown. It was utterly fabulous, with a thick layer of creamy (maybe) ricotta cheese, lightly studded with crumbled sausage. I was quite smitten and ate almost the entire thing before I remembered to snap a photo. Only tip to the friendly, capable staff: please remember to change those gloves between handling food and handling a credit card. I'm not sure the nice young lady who served me, today, changed her gloves after putting through my payment, to help the gentleman who came in after me. My immediate family is relatively spry, and I have a fair amount of faith in my stomach acids... but more attention to hygiene may just keep someone alive in these times.... Love this place. Still the best bakery I've found in the area by far. read more

Their pricing was affordable and the cheesecake was delicious. They even offered to write Happy Birthday on it, which made this gift truly extra special. The owner of this shop saved the day for me quite literally!! I purchased a cake from a friend of mine in Danbury, CT. For a special birthday party all the way in Long Island. Well on my journey to Long Island the cake suddenly started to collapse. I called this bakery and the owner kindly allowed me to come in. He saw the tears in my eyes, and our of kindness of his heart, he fixed the cake. He somehow miraculously made it look as if the cake wasn't falling apart. I'm so impressed with this bakery and his knowledge in cakes. I should of just bought through him! Trying to support small business during this hard time. Went in to pick up some little cookies. Spent over 20 dollars on a box of cookies for the family and then got home and tried them.. OLD AND HARD. Couldn't even chew the entire cookie because the jelly in every single cookie was like a hard dried fruit leather you get from the grocery store.. besides the linzers (those must be more popular and actually made fresh to replenish) wish I just got 20 dollars worth of linzers rather than the other old cookies we chose (got 6 different kinds and only that one was fresh) I understand people are struggling in this time but if you want to be supported as a small business when EVERYONE is struggling too, then Atleast have fresh baked goods. read more

AVOID FOR WEDDING CAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My fiancé and I were recommended to this place through a friend of a friend of a friend. So we show up (with my future in-laws) and start asking about wedding cakes. A charming employee (whom we later found out was a low level employee) named "Andre" sits us down and starts asking us questions about style, # of people at the reception, location, etc. Eventually we settle on a size, style, etc and he tells us they will prepare an estimate but the total price should not exceed around $500.00. Fine, we shook hands and were told to come back a few weeks before the wedding to choose fillings and finalize the order. Fast forward to our next visit, we meet with Andre, choose our fillings, and we are told he has to finalize the price, but the total price should not exceed $600. My fiancé caught this right away, but me, being the optimist, still feel this is a great price given the # of people we are having at our wedding. So we wait, and wait, and wait, finally I inform Andre we have another appointment and we have to go, but to call me on my cell with the final #. So he calls me and tells me the price is now $800.00. I call back and demand to speak to the owner. When attempting to explain my story (I could barely get a word in) the owner starts screaming at me telling me I should have known to talk to him (the owner) directly. To me this showed a complete lack of understanding about how customer service works, a lack of control over his employees or proper procedure and a complete mismanagement of my expectations. Bad customer service overall. I would rather give another baker $1,000.00 than give these jokers a dime. Hope they go out of business. read more

Would not recommend this shop. A week prior to my daughters 1st birthday I ordered a simple sheet cake to be ready the following week (Saturday 9/16). I was assured the cake would be ready when I arrived. Additionally they told me it would be baked the day before. We agreed that I would pick up the cake at 9am. I paid in full for the cake and left. Fast forward a week. I arrive at the shop to pick up the cake at around 10:30am. The girl at the counter politely greeted me and went to the front case to retrieve my cake. She searched and couldn't find it. She then proceeded to the back and huddled with other workers. She came back up front telling me they were just finishing the decorating. I waited about a 1/2 hour...they did give me some delicious fresh doughnut on the house. When we served the cake, instead of it being a freshly baked white cake with chocolate butter cream filling and white butter cream frosting, it appeared to have been a recycled stale frankencake with pink filling scraped off (but soaked into the white body of the cake) and quickly reassembled based on the specifications that I requested. Now the 1/2 hour wait made sense. The cake was served, but no one took more than 1 or 2 bites. It was all thrown in the trash. To be honest, Costco or BJ's makes better cakes. I tried numerous times to reach out the shop and express my displeasure. On my third attempt I finally got someone on the phone, but instead of them handling the call in a professional manner, I was told to call back because they had a fax coming in...this was after I told them I had a complaint about a cake and wished to speak to the owner. All I can say is what a find! I don't ever go to Brewster but on this Friday the 13th I found myself down there to take a teaching assistant certification exam at the Brewster Technology Center. After I finished, and passed, the exam I was craving a cup of coffee and a little bite to enjoy it with. Not knowing the area, I called on trusty old Google in the hopes of discovering a new gem or at the very least something half-way decent. Top of the list was Brewster Pastry. I wasn't too sure so I kept scolling down the list which consisted of the usual corporate chains. I always prefer to patronize a local shop over the big boys so I proceeded to investigate the website for Brewster Pastry. I wasn't sure what to expect but it is very nicely designed with beautiful photos of the enticing confections created within. As I scrolled down I was met with a photo of a sweet looking man with a welcoming smile standing behind the counter with the heading "About Us." This was the proprieter, chef boulanger and patissiere Thierry Denvin, from the Northeast of France. Wow! A REAL French pastry chef with serious lineage in old world French baking! I encourage you to go to their website and read Thierry's biography. That wasenough for me and I headed right over with Google Maps leading the way. I think I've referenced Google enough times here now. The bakery is located in a little strip mall with a McDonald's, a car wash St the opposite end of the parking lot, and a World Gym overhead on the second floor of the building. I had no idea World Gym was still around! Anyway, I made my way up to the door and as I entered I was greeted warmly by Kathleen behind the huge pastry case that runs the length of the shop. And straight ahead, leaning on the counter and engaged in a lively conversation with a customer, who I could tell was a regular, was Chef Thierry himself with a smile in his eyes. I walked up to the counter and he asked me if I would care for something in the most charming French accent you've ever heard. I asked for something with apples and he immediately suggested the apple turnovers. I am a sucker for a good apple turnover so I ordered one along with a small cup of coffee. Thierry then explained that the coffee would not be from the new coffee maker which they just got yesterday. He went on to tell me that when he opened the shop this morning there was 2 in of water on the floor that had leaked out from the brand new coffee machine! He blamed it on Friday the 13th! So, having just heard that I wasn't expecting much from the coffee. I paid took my pastry to the coffee station poured my cup from the dispensers and proceeded out to my car to enjoy. The coffee was excellent! I was really pleasantly surprised. And the turnover? Absolutely delicious! The pastry itself was incredibly light, flaky and just like air. The apples were real hand cut apples with the juice inside and not that horrible gelatinous goop that most other bakeries put into their turnovers. It was so good I grabbed my phone and went back in for another one! Theirry was already taking an order for a custom cake. I waited til he was done and told him how wonderful that apple turnover was that I devoured and how good the coffee was! I ordered another turnover and I was so impressed bye the whole place and especially Thierry and Kathleen I asked them if I could get a picture with them. The man who was ordering his cake offered to take the photos. I know this has been very long-winded but when I am impressed by a business and the people who run it I think everybody should know about it. This place is a real treasure and Thierry is so friendly, gracious, warm and passionate about creating amazing treats to bring joy to his customers. If you are anywhere near Brewster definitely go out of your way and pay Thierry and his staff a visit. It is most definitely worth it. I know I will be back very soon and as Thierry said, "Friday the 13th can start out bad but can end good!" I couldn't agree more! read more

If I lived closer, I would have returned some of the pastry I purchased on Sunday. I was so excited to see genuine lace cookies, but they were completely soggy- instead of light and crisp- the way they should be. They were actually overfilled with chocolate, so that the cookie portion was overwhelmed. The individual coffee buttercream layer slice was STALE - 'discarded after one bite. I wondered too, if they put yellow dye in the genoise batter; it was unnaturally yellow! I did not buy a nice looking small peach pie...feeling that $12.00 was excessive. It was the only fruit pie there eat noon . Everything in the case looked so enticing, and the breads looked well made. One redeeming factor...the eclairs were very good. The custard filling was just about perfect in flavor and consistency. The frosting could have been a tad more dense. Much of it rubbed off in the pastry box on the way home. I had a 5 tier wedding cake made by them for my sister. It looked like something off of Food Network and tasted even better. Mini pastry and cookies by the pound have always been fresh. Heating up something made by a machine and then frozen in Omaha and shipped by truck is not baking. THIS IS THE REAL THING. Real people using their hands to make exquisite pastries and the best breads in the whole area. Baguette even a Frenchman would slather his butter on. That is my favorite. A terrific assortment of breads and bagels . HAND MADE . By a BAKER! You don't become a baker unless you are called to the art.
