It had been years since I'd been her, even though I live just a couple miles away. I decided to grab lunch here, so just sat at the bar. They do offer both indoor and outdoor seating, but it was a surprisingly blustery day for the Keys. Katelyn waited on me and was great! I just drank water, since I need to be functional this afternoon. I decided to start with tuna poke wontons and go from there. Wow! They were huge and the tuna was very fresh! This starter is definitely something that could be shared at a table. I was full since I finished them myself. I decided to take a few starters to share with neighbors. Katelyn kindly packed the warm and cold ones separately. I had two big bags! Everything was excellent. It was quiet, too, with only one lunch table with other guests. After six months of experiencing lunch at sundowners we had a little bit of issue with it, we went back today and everything has changed. The Service.was very very good , The food was awesome. The ambience was great the view amazing. They fix the place up a lot. We had the waiter named Junior and he was awesome every time we go there now I'm going to ask for Junior because not only did he attended to us very well. He helped his fellow waiters and waitresses and he was all over the place helping everybody else. He was amazing. Junior 10 stars to you will be seeing you soon. Thank you for your service. Located at 103900 Overseas Highway Key Largo, FL, it is a hidden gem. You'll miss the entrance if you blink for a second! My wife and I were out for a drive and decided to stop for a cocktail. We stumbled on Sundowners. We did not go into the restaurant. We went to the outside bar. We were stunned by the beautiful views and service. All of the staff were extremely friendly and laid back. There was live music and an incredibly relaxing ambiance. While we did not eat there, people seated outside and at the bar ordered food and it looked fantastic and plentiful. If you are a smoker, they allow smoking at the outside bar and sell cigars in the restaurant greeting area. We plan on returning soon to enjoy the food and friendly atmosphere. He provided exceptional service from start to finish. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is the live band. While the musicians were talented, the music didn't match the atmosphere of what feels like a family-oriented restaurant. It had more of a loud beach bar or Caribbean Club vibe rather than a relaxed dining experience. A different style of music would better complement the excellent food, service, and overall ambiance. This is your typical hole-in-the-wall stop as you drive through the Keys. When we stopped in for drinks, there was a DJ who was so good everyone should've been dancing in their seats. It wasn't that kind of crowd at the time, but I bet happy hour jams here. Not a bad place at all for a quick pit stop. read more

I used to love this place, went a couple of days ago, and was very disappointed. I knew something was off, and low-and-behold, new owners. At 60, Ive been to a lot of restaurants, this one included, and I also worked at some. So, $20 for a Glenlevit, for a weak pour that was maybe 1oz, really? Wake up call, you are not anywhere close to Capital Grill or Smith & Wollensky's, and they easily do a 2 oz pour. So, this made me watch the kitchen carefully, and saw what appeared to be young line cooks running the show. I do not mind spending good money on great food, but I did not risk it. and a lot of the recent 1 star reviews confirmed my intuition. I believe it is either a restaurant chain, by the looks of the employees and their uniforms, or someone who comes from that background. As the younger generation says "the vibe was off". Can I just start off with not only saying how sweet she is, but she has the greatest recommendations.She recommended the shrimp cargo with extra cheesy garlic, topping and garlic bread. Which we ordered, and it turned out to be great! She recommended the poke bowl as well for entree, but we ended up getting the whole fish.The whole fish was fantastic fried perfectly. The place is easy to find and easy to park in. We had reservations, but didn't need them because there weren't many people there. We waited a few minutes for the hostess and then went to find her. It was really awkward, as if she didn't know what we could possibly be there for. She just stood at the stand staring at us blankly, I interrupted her infinite pause and said "I'd like to have a table please, we have a reservation for the patio". A moment of clarity briefly came to her, and she called for someone to seat us. The young man then proceeded to welcome us to possibly the worst table on the near empty patio, at that point it dawned on me that this wasn't the place to spend $200 on dinner for 2. There's no shortage of restaurants in the area so we quickly and easily found a replacement. In short, this place is only known for 2 good things, the sunset view and key lime pie. Hence SUNDOWNers as their own name. We tried all the soups, lobster bisque, clam chowder, & conch chowder. The server Gabriel was awesome and attentive. He graciously blessed us with a complementary banana bread, before having their famous key lime pie. Which was extremely phenomenal bursting with so much flavor. Service was so friendly from the moment we walked in - our waitress Nelly did an amazing job! She even came down to the pier when she saw us taking sunset pictures to offer to take a photo of us - so thoughtful! Loved the conch fritters and shrimp for starters. I had the seafood pasta in Tabasco sauce, great portion and very flavorful. Their key lime pie is huge and so good. Visited for the first time w friends...Callie was our server. She was pretty condescending and rude from the jump. We sat outside & the live music was so loud, off key, and off putting I literally could not think or hear the people at my table! We tried to have brunch here today but ended up leaving without ever being served. After waiting about an hour and a half, we followed up on our order and were told it was just then being prepared. We waited another 15-20 minutes, and the food still never arrived. Unfortunately, the manager did not seem very interested in resolving the situation. It also wasn't particularly busy, and there appeared to be plenty of staff available, which made the delay even more frustrating. Went there after touring the upper keys because it was close to our hotel. The sunset views are amazing and the docks provided different views. Our waiter, Sebastian, was awesome. He was laid back and not pushy. We shared calamari and a chopped salad and he recommended the Key Lime pie. My guy who loves it said it's the best he has ever had despite the mile high mound of merengue that was on it. Put it on your list if you haven't been there! read more
