I attempted to go to Dr. Sun as a new patient. He refused to listen to my symptoms, which I admittedly had trouble explaining because I did not know why I was having eye pain--only when the eye pain occured. Because I could not explain the problem well, he became very rude and condescending. When I told him that he didn't need to be rude, he told me to leave. It doesn't seem that his attitude is unusual, as this type of interaction seemed routine to his receptionist (who is also his wife). I went to Dr. Sun because he is an ophthalmologist (rather than an optometrist) and I wanted to make sure that my eye pain was properly evaluated. However, it became apparent that Dr. Sun didn't want to actually evaluate my issue, but rather just wants to be a better paid eyeglass mill. Based upon his attitude, I have no doubt that he would have just conducted an eye exam and sold me new glasses which may not have actually solved my eye pain. read more

I should have read reviews before booking my appointment because it sounds like I am not the only patient that has left this office nearly in tears. I went for a routine eye exam and was honest about leaving my contacts in for long periods of time. At the start of my exam, Dr. Sun told me he could not accept me as a patient because of this and then told me I would need to either "change my attitude or find a new doctor" to which I replied "okay" in shock. He then would not continue the eye exam until I verbally confirmed I would start changing my contacts and did not want to find another doctor. This all happened after waiting in the waiting room for 45 minutes for this appointment. In total I was there for an hour and a half with the actual eye exam taking a rushed five minutes or less. I've never had a worse experience with a doctor in my life! I should say the receptionist was a delight and tried to make me feel better after this awful experience with the doctor. read more

I just moved to Philly and was in the market for a new eye doctor for my partner and I. Dr. Sun's office was exactly what we were looking for. The receptionist was very friendly and personable, as was Dr Sun(loved his dad jokes). My partner has been wearing and paying a ton for progressives based off what our previous eye doctor suggested, it should be noted it was a doc in a eyeglass store, and Dr Sun told him he never needed progressives and his headaches have gone away since getting new glasses with the RX from Dr. Sun. As for me, I was told I really needed glasses from that same doctor and Dr Sun let me know that I really only need them for eye strain when driving at night or looking at a computer all day. I highly recommend Dr. Sun for anyone looking for someone that knows his stuff and won't upsell you on the latest and greatest. read more

I hate for my first yelp review to be such a negative one, but after having a phenomenal doctor's appointment somewhere else (which I made after my terrible experience here) I feel inspired to finally contribute to yelp and let people know not to go here. As Dr. Sun's first reviewer yelped, the space itself is messy and the equipment looks outdated. Enough said about that. As for Dr. Sun, his exam was quick and half hazard. After explaining to him that my current prescription was blurry, I expect the doctor to be particularly careful when figuring out my new prescription. Instead, he was EXTREMELY quick when comparing the different lenses, giving me literally less than 2 seconds to determine the clearer one. That part of the exam he concluded with "I don't know whats wrong with your eyes. They are just not perfect" (errr, yea - I wear glasses!) when he couldn't seem to find a lens that I could see perfectly with (which was NOT the case with the eye doctor I went to today). After that, I still wanted to talk about my contacts, as I've been unhappy with mine. He said he couldn't at that time because he didn't have the contacts. (This has NEVER happened to me - a sufficiently prepared optometrist office has sample contacts of every kind). He also wanted to charge me an ADDITIONAL $150 for the contact fitting. (In my last doctor's experience, this was included in the exam, and the place I went to today was $79) Lastly, he put dilating drops in my eyes and told me to sit in the waiting room for ten minutes. About 30 minutes later (and i don't know what the hold up was as I was the ONLY patient there) he called me in. When he was done, he sent me out in the BRIGHT sun by myself, not seeming to care if I was okay or offer some shades (okay, I know this is my responsibility to take care of myself, but this is just another example of his poor bedside manner, and again a huge contrast to the experience I had today, where the doctor told me he wouldn't dilate my eyes because I was alone). I thought until today that maybe I was being overly sensitive and therefore irrational. I now realize I wasn't and there are DEFINITELY way better options out there! read more

I wish I had read these reviews before going in. Dr. Sun is rude, unwilling to admit mistakes, and uncommunicative. This is my first review because I feel that strongly about my experience. There was an issue regarding my insurance policy and the staff insisted I pay a co-pay. I tried showing them the policy, but they refused to look at it. Naively, I paid the co-pay. However, I called the insurance company and confirmed that I didn't have to pay a co-pay. I asked if they'd like speak to the insurance company and they refused that as well. Dr. Sun then told me he didn't have the time to deal with this and we cut the appointment short. He gave me my money back. It is the their job to check with the insurance company and not incorrectly bill someone. They should acknowledge their mistake instead of being obstinate and cutting the appointment short. I guess Dr. Sun didn't think he was making enough money off of me? I was going for a routine eye exam and even if this scenario didn't happen, I'm not sure I would go back again. He was terse and seemed reluctant/annoyed when I asked what the drops he was putting into my eyes were. Everyone has the right to know what is being done to them first. I'm pretty glad I left the appointment and found a much better doctor because quite frankly, I don't have time for that. read more

Dr. Sun seems capable except he has no bedside manner AT ALL. I've been having some tests done to determine if I have a major problem (glaucoma) or not. The first time I went, I thought he was quick and rude, but I gave him another chance, thinking it was just me or maybe he was trying to catch up or something that day... On my next visit, I asked him to explain something to me because I was really confused about all of the tests. Honestly, that's all I said. He yelled at me, said, "you still don't believe me!" after I said nothing, lectured me and told me I needed to be "more trusting of others" (what?), shook his head, got up, and never did explain the tests to me. I was still sitting there. The front desk staff apologized for him but I left blurry eyed, in shock, and in tears. I think he may know what he's doing, but you will never know because he won't take the time to explain it to you. I seriously wasn't asking for much... He also doesn't even tell you when he's going to dilate your eyes... Just picks up the drops and tells you to lean back. I have never had an experience like this ever. I didn't even know what to do. I don't want to find another doctor, but I really need him/her to explain simple concepts to me without yelling at me. Anyhow, I felt like I should warn others. If you just need a routine checkup, he's probably fine, but don't expect an explanation and don't ask for one or you too will be accused of being untrusting. read more

Very knowledgeable ophthalmologist. Have gone to him for many years. He juggles patients well since the way this exam works is that you have to be seen, then return to waiting room while eyes dilate, then be brought back into his office to be seen again. Dr. Sun is a very talented surgeon / doctor. Been seeing him since I was a kid, my mother sees him for her glaucoma. He's removed a growth from my eyelid as well as done checkups here and there. He's quick at his work and has a good sense of humor. read more

I have also never had an issue with a prescription he's written for me. I have severe allergies which cause itchy eyes. A few years ago, when I tried to get an appt with my regular eye doctor, the person on the phone told me they had no appointment openings for a month. What good would that do me? It was allergy season that month. Since Dr. Sun's office was very conveniently located and he is associated with Wills Eye Hospital, I called his office. They said I could come in the next day! After that I remained a regular patient of Dr. Sun. He did an excellent job on my cataract. I had an allergic reaction to the eye drops and was able to get in to his office and get a new prescription immediately. His staff is very friendly and helpful. My regular eye exams vary in length and sometimes he is very brief with answers to questions but overall I think he is very skilled. My entire family has been using Dr. Sun for approximately twenty five years. While it is true that the office may appear somewhat dated, the care is first rate. He gives us ample time and excellent care. I would suggest that one look beyond the clutter and the decor and look at the FIRST RATE care provided. My wife and I consider ourselves good medical consumers, Dr. Sun has always taken the time to explain procedures, and has counseled us to delay certain procedures when it was in our best medical interest. When my wife inquired about a new procedure, the doctor advised us that he didn't feel the procedure was perfected enough for her particular condition. Now that the procedure is more commonplace, he has scheduled the procedure. I went in to see Dr. Sun for a routine eye exam. I was greeted by a very lovely woman who asked that I wait just a couple of minutes, no longer than 5 or 10. I was then called in and welcomed by Dr. Sun who was extremely friendly. The exam was like any other I had received before. Very quick and no fuss, just the way I like them to be! I will definitely recommend Dr. Sun to all and will be going back in the future. read more

I've been a patient of Dr Sun's for a few years. I've had only good experiences. The location is great for me and I'm usually able to book appointments last minute. He's been very helpful whenever I've had concerns. I had some issues with dry eyes that made it difficult for me to wear contacts, but he gave me a treatment that helped with the dry eyes and recommended new contacts that are much more breathable. read more

It was time to see the ophthalmologist as my vision was becoming more blurry(even with eyeglasses) and so on a Friday, I asked if Dr.Sun could squeeze me into his appointment schedule for Monday. Yes, come in and Dr.Sun will see you, I was told. There were other clients in the waiting room (airy, light, neat, clean, plenty of seating) and we took our turns going in and out of the exam room. While waiting my turn, there were several helpful pamphlets on the various eye problems so I read those and took one of each with me. The office staff were friendly and professional (they double checked my personal information to make sure everything was correct & up-to-date). They reminded me that anytime I have a concern to just call and they would squeeze me into the schedule (they do this for all his clients). Dr.Sun did a very thorough exam performing several tests. He gave an in-depth diagnosis(explained the why, what of my secondary cataract) and offered a solution to my blurry vision. He asked if I had other concerns about my vision and answered any questions that I had. Dr.Sun explained how the procedure would be done in the office with a very high tech looking machine. He said that I would notice a difference in my eyesight in about 3 hours. Sure enough, a few hours later....I could see so much clearer and better....like night and day...amazing! I still wear glasses to watch TV & drive, but everything is in focus now and I can put away the reading glasses. I was told to put eyedrops twice a day for the next 2 days and to call his office in 2 days to report on my eyesight. Before I could call, the doctor himself called 24 hours after the procedure to see how I was doing. Now I'm going to call his office to tell his staff how much better my sight is and also to thank all of them for seeing me at the last minute and doing such a terrific job. A footnote: it's a personal quirk, but 4 stars out of 5 is the highest I give as I believe there is room for improvement in all of us regardless of who or what we are. read more

After seeing flashes and floaters,I was diagnosed with PVD. After the ER doctor examined me, she said I did not have a tear in the retina of my right eye. Another eye physician examined me and concluded that I did not have a retinal tear. Then I saw Dr. Sun, who has been my doctor for many years. After after a comprehensive exam, Dr. Sun concluded that I may have a tear in my retina, and his staff set up an appointment with a retina specialist for that day. Because of Dr. Sun's knowledge and expertise, I was able to have the tear in my retina repaired that day by the specialist. Dr. Sun has followed up with me extensively to ensure that my condition is stable. He is a consummate professional who listens to his patients and provides sound medical advice. read more

I decided to go to Dr. Sun for my annual ophthalmologist checkup, drawn in by the attractive-looking optical shop attached to his office and its proximity to my apartment. But the office and examination area look nothing like the optical shop: the entire space was cluttered (e.g., books and magazines stacked 6+ deep completely covered the massive desk in the exam room). The smaller table which Dr. Sun used to write prescriptions was similarly cluttered, with a yellowing newspaper draped over family photos and nearly all free space obscured. The desk staff was unprofessional, bordering on rude. All of these things might have been ok if the actual exam hadn't been so far from confidence-inspiring: as someone who has worn glasses and contacts for nearly my entire life, I know what an ophthalmologist checkup should look like, and this wasn't it. He didn't even ask me to read the letters on the chart; he only asked whether they were blurry and whether the different lens configurations made it any better. He did this so quickly and haphazardly that I often didn't have a chance to decide one way or the other. He never asked me whether I had any concerns or problems, and when at the end I tried to bring them up anyway, he said, "Oh, that's nothing to worry about," shuffled through some disorganized desk drawers, and finally handed me a sheet of paper listing symptoms I should be concerned about. He did, however, offer me the unsolicited opinion that I would not be a good candidate for LASIK.
