I have been coming to Sun Tan City for 2 years. I used to do the uv beds but I switched to versa pro spray tans , which have been great for me. I feel they always look very natural. However I had a pretty unfortunate experience when I came in yesterday. The customer service at sun tan city used to be really great--the employees were all friendly and very helpful. But yesterday when I came in, the woman at the front desk was so rude to me that I am seriously considering cancelling my membership. She did not greet me when I came in, just left me standing in front of her for several seconds before I finally gave her my name (unfortunately, I did not catch her name or I would definitely be listing it here). She had a really negative attitude the whole time she was getting me set up for a spray tan, and then when I left she was extremely rude to me as I was walking out the door! I am not normally one to complain--this is actually the first time I have ever written a review anywhere--but this really negatively impacted my experience and I hope it doesn't happen again or I am definitely taking the $20+/month I pay elsewhere. I am not a frequent tanner and found this place on Groupon. I needed to get tanned for pictures. I went two days in a row and both of the clerks I dealt with were super helpful and nice. They answered all my questions and we knowledgable. I had a great experience and will be returning next time I need sun in a flash. read more

I see when I read the other reviews that the 5 star reviews are from years ago and the recent reviews are all negative. I 100% agree with that. I've been going to STC for over 2 years and have referred many of my friends to STC. When I first started going every single employee was awesome. That being said, the people who currently work there are really unfriendly and can even be pretty rude. The employee attitude/customer service sucks, 75% of the employees won't let you tan for the maximum amount if you haven't been in within the past week (yet some still will). Even if the employee attitude changed, the facility has really gone downhill. Inside the bed (under the glass) there is dirt (like a lot, especially in bed 1) and many beds have the speaker system broken so you can't turn the music off and have to listen to it the entire time. A few weeks ago, there was even a bug crawling IN THE BED as I was tanning. I looked behind the bed and there was another dead beetle. Also, I hate being bombarded about buying lotions- I understand that is part of their job but only some employees haggle me. I have been to various tanning salons in the area, Sun Tan City has had the most rude customer service and waiting time. he location in Raleigh was a better experience than the one in Durham. I went in with a coupon I had recieved in my registeration packet from a local race, and I would never go back. The staff was rude and very pushy with products and tanning packages. The coupon I had offered a "Tour" 5 tans for $5, I started the tour and then returned to continue 8 days later, the week before my brother's wedding. The guy who helped me made me listen for 15min (I watched the time, no lie) to all his sales pitches on lotions and bed upgrades. Coming from a sales background, I thanked him for the information and said I would think about it as I may look to do more tanning throughout the summer for different occasions, I let him know I was only looking to continue the package I had already. He told me very rudly my package had expired and I couldn't tan. I protested saying it was good on the coupon until the end of the month. He told me repeatedly 3x it had expired. I am not inept, he didn't offer me any other information or help on how/why it was not on my account. But, he let me know I could pay $25+ for my single tan in the fastest bed. I wasted 25min and I am still while. And never returning to this location. read more

I love tanning at Sun Tan City! I tanned here for my wedding and have continued to go because of the relaxing atmosphere and sweet staff. The only reason I could not give this business five stars is because of the employees literally pesters me to buy/try EVERY tanning product under the sun. I already have the lotion, and that's all I need. This past week I needed to get new lotion and I purposely waited until one of the other girls were working so I could give them the commission from my sales. The staff and the facility are great. I feel bad for the front line staff having to deal with the inefficiency from the corporate office. The computer/technology issues consistently fail not only at this salon but company wide. I'm typing this review as I stand in a long line, because of technical difficulties yet again. I have been in line for over ten minutes. I am going to use up all my sessions and not renew. My sessions are shorter than the time I stand in line to get into one, when the computers are down. I started going to Sun Tan City when I moved to the area back in April 2015. I was hooked from the first visit! The staff are so friendly and helpful - they are patient as they explain all of the bed options and each of their features. They have a very large variety of lotions - for before, during, and after tanning. And, I had only tried Mystic Tan before coming to this salon. The Versa Pro is by far much better, and it provides a very even, natural bronzed look. It is such a clean facility, and while there are some waits (during peak hours - such as right after work or on the weekends), the staff is efficient in helping customers but makes them feel appreciated at the same time. Each customer gets individualized attention w/o feeling rushed. I have had a few issues being able to log into the App, but when it works, it is helpful because you get to skip the line - if there is one. I wouldn't go anywhere else - I have more Durham location ladies and I love them, and they always make my day even better when I go there! read more

I have been tanning at this location for over a year. This last spray tan at Sun Tan City my entire body has been covered in tan spots the spray had a malfunction. I told the counter person as I was leaving it seemed to spray differently this time. After a few hours, my entire body was covered in brown tan spots and some areas had nothing at all. I approached the staff about this and asked the manager politely for a free month or money back, but I have not heard from them. I also own a business and Durham and this is not the way to treat returning customers. So sorry for this Sun Tan City location and management there, but people have asked me non-stop about what happened and I've had to tell them. read more

I recently got a membership at Sun Tan City, and am very disappointed with them. It takes over 15 minutes to get in a bed because the employees are like vultures trying to get sales. Tanning should be a quick and easy escape from a chaotic day....They are VERY pushy about selling you items each visit and get irritated when you don't buy product. They are also very over priced. I will be switching tanning beds as soon as my membership runs out. read more

Really disappointed that after being a customer for more than 3 years.. I moved across country and Sun Tan City would not refund me two months back that was left on my account. This branch told me to contact customer service and that it should not be a problem but once I did, they refused to help me and refused to refund me. Then, when I asked to speak to a manager, they just ignored me. Really sad after all that time to be treated that way! read more

This place is clean but it literally takes FOREVER to get into a bed or to use the Versa (which is typically broken or at least malfunctioning). I would absolutely not recommend this business. Plenty of people are working here but they have zero sense of urgency. They take their sweet time with every task and even create small talk with the current customer they are serving when there's a line out the door. It's absurd. Additionally, they will try to get you to buy any and every product. The sales pitch it exhausting and seems phony. Only go here if you have a couple extra hours on your hands and want to be sold tanning products by people who sound like used car salesmen. read more

Twice this year money has come out of my bank account from Sun Tan City, without my consent. It takes almost a month to get my money back and this last time the owner, Malissa, never apologized intially. She told me that I needed to bring in my bank statement to show her where the money came out. In fact, she called Corporate headquarters after my call to her and was told it would be back in my account within a few more business days, but failed to call and tell me. I woke up early on a Saturday, drove over to Sun Tan City, Malissa told me she had talked to Corporate and would print off the email. I asked her why she didn't call me and forward the email to me so that I didn't need to get up early on a Saturday to drive over and she stated that she assumed I would tan while in the store. Neither time has anyone been able to tell me why money keeps coming out of my account and this last time was the final straw, with Malissa deciding to not contact me regarding what she found out from Corporate. Malissa's husband called and told me he would refund my total dollar amount for this year and maybe I could find another tanning salon to fit my needs. I am glad to be out from under Sun Tan City in Durham as I don't feel like they care about why money is coming out of a customer's account nor do they care that I was asked to take time out of my schedule to drive over only to find out that she had further information. I, also, had to go to the bank and cancel my card and get a new one so that Sun Tan City no longer takes money out of my account. Having tanned at other salons I will say you can get the most for your money here with the memberships and the beds are decent. The bulbs seem to be changed frequently and that is the case for every location. However in many of the beds the music is broken and it doesn't seem to get fixed. The versa spas seem to always be having issues as well. The aggressive sales tactics is what really gets to me. It didn't seem to be as bad at other locations and never different tanning salons. There are so many different "sales" to get you to purchase something. They constantly are trying to sell you something even if you don't need it. It is quite obvious that they commission off of what they sell and that they need it. Some seem desperate at times. It makes the wait to tan that much longer because they do it to everyone. I understand that selling is a part of the job but it doesn't seem fair for the customers to be haggled every single time they come in to tan to buy an extremely overpriced product. Tanning is supposed to be a relaxing experience and this takes away from that. It also doesn't seem fair to the employees to have to do this to earn a buck. They work hard to make sure you aren't waiting too long and always have a clean room. I'm always seeing new people, so the employee turnover must be high and this is probably why. If you want a semi-cheap membership with decent beds and bulbs this place provides that. What you have to go through before you even get to the bed however really ruins it for me. read more

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON GETTING MARRIED SOON!!! I went to this location because I knew that it was the only location near Raleigh with the verso pro spray tan machine (which I know works well because I had had a spray tan at this same machine for my best friends wedding that was in August). I arrived at the Durham location at 6 PM with my mom, 2 of my bridesmaids, and one of my bridesmaid's mother. We were told when we arrived that there was a 2-hour wait and that we could be placed on a list and come back after 2 hours. We were super bummed but decided to go to dinner and come back after since we were all hungry. We went to a Mexican restaurant down the road and came back immediately after. When we got back to Sun Tan City at 8:45 PM, we were told that they didn't know what time and that there were still 13 people in line in front of us........13 people, 20 minutes for each.....we were all so upset about the lack of communication that we received when we had first arrived. My mom and one of my bridesmaids left knowing that it would be ridiculous to stay till that late. I am the bride and knowing that I would be having my rehearsal dinner the next day, I knew I absolutely had to wait since I wanted my tan to be done early enough so I could shower once or twice before the wedding day. I waited till 12:30 to have a spray tan that night and got home around 1 AM. No one offered anything for me that night, I still paid for my tan at full price. Also, the staff was rude about the situation and did not take any responsibility for their actions. If that wasn't bad enough, my mom and bridesmaid that had left since they refused to stay that long had canceled there spray tan before they had left and STILL GOT CHARGED!!! My mom has been fighting them to give her her money back for a spray tan she never even got! And I was super bummed because my mom never got to get a spray tan before my wedding day (which by the way, she never does anything for herself so I was looking forward to her looking beautiful and feeling beautiful the day of the wedding!). I was SO frustrated by this experience and will never go back. I never write reviews but felt this experience was worth me warning other brides! If you are in desperate need of a spray tan before your wedding, do not go here! read more

I went there last night to get a spray tan and the results are awful! I put the primer they sold me on my body and then the barrier cream on my hands and feet as they instructed but my body only got a slight color increase in some areas and stayed completely white in others. To make matters worse the barrier cream didn't work and my hands are 3 shades darker than the rest of my body! The staff was friendly when I was there last night but when I called to let them know what happened the woman questioned whether I had actually put on the barrier cream and then said she "wasn't saying I was wrong, but that there was nothing wrong with the cream." Obviously something went wrong! My tan is so awful I didn't even bother to use the extender cream I had bought from them because I don't want to keep this splotchy tan! They didn't even attempt to make it up to me. I previously got a spray tan from the Sun Tan City in Wilmington and it was amazing, but the Durham Sun Tan City is a complete disappointment! I completely wasted my money! The worst part is I got the spray tan to be beach ready for my birthday trip to Myrtle Beach but now I'm worried that this tan will ruin all of my pictures! A year ago, I was diagnosed with Lupus. Before that, I was always working out and tanning was a must to help me feel good. When I got diagnosed, I learned I had to take a break from excersising, and tanning was a no-no from that point on. After getting off my heavy meds, I was able to get back in the gym. I wanted to see if there was a way I could get my glow back too. I talked to a girl there, Madison. She not only gave me alternatives, but she researched Lupus, the medications I was on, she even talked to someone who had Lupus to see how they handled tanning. She recommended sunless (since I have to be careful with prolonged exposure to UVA rays). She told me everything I needed to know, she was there to walk me through everything. She didn't "sell" me on stuff, she helped me. Not only is the salon immaculate, but the people are amazing. I've only had the pleasure of meeting a few members of the staff, but their passion and dedication to helping people, whether it's to feel good or better some type of condition, is indescribable. These girls know what they are talking about, and every sunless visit I've had has been nothing short of wonderful. If you need information, advice, help or you just want to be around good people. I have been tanning at Sun Tan City (Durham) for over two years. I used to have a great experience every time I went in to tan. However, the past few months have been awful. I am a member at the "fastest" level. The beds are for a maximum of 12 minutes. Practically every time I go in lately I have to wait a minimum of 20 minutes just to check in! Most of the time, I don't have to wait for a bed, but it is definitely frustrating to stand in line all the time. Typically, there is one person checking people in and everyone else is walking around cleaning beds. Meanwhile, the line is past the door. No one ever looks up to apologize to the line and no attempt is made to have others come up front to check in. Many times the "Salon Director" has been up front while the one person is checking in. She does not assist with the line, nor does she address the crowd. I pay $64.99 a month for my tanning package to stand in line for at least 20 minutes to TAN for 12 minutes! Craziness. The only time I don't have to wait is on Sunday morning at 10am when they first open up. Due to the 24 hour rule (which I respect and understand) I am unable to tan as often as I would like. Since I get off of work at roughly the same time, and I never know how long I will be in line, it's too much of a gamble to go daily. It's incredibly frustrating to spend the money each month and not be satisfied. Definitely going elsewhere at the end of this month! Make sure you have LOTS of time to stand around before going to this location! "Part time help" signs are posted, and they definitely need it!!! read more
