I am very disappointed in having to leave this review because I mostly had a great experience up until today, but I want other people to be aware. When I went into this location a few weeks ago, I was helped by a girl (who may be the manager?) who was extremely nice and sociable with me- I told her the deal that I hadn't been tanning in over 15 years, but I wanted a nice base tan for a big trip I had coming up. We talked extensively about my needs and my trip, she helped me get lots of lotion, etc. I told her I was only doing the tanning before the trip and then will be cancelling. She signed me for a monthly package which was fine, because I planned on coming many times before my trip to tan. I did go in many times and all the girls were super nice every time I came in, except ironically this girl who was SO NICE to me the first time we met, but unfortunately I think I realized it was all an act to get me to sign up and buy everything. Which is really sad because usually I can tell when people are just being fake in order to sell you something, etc. But she was not nice to me any other time I went in afterwards :( So anyway, went in today to do my final tan before my trip tomorrow and I wanted to cancel before the new month started (that she told me would be no problem to cancel a few weeks ago), now this same girl says I can't cancel because I have to pay for 2 months first before I cancel. Which she absolutely did not tell me I had to do when I signed up. And her response today was "well you signed the paperwork" Ok? I was there for an hour and we chatted so much and I told her I was not going to continue on with tanning after my trip, so why did she sign me up for this knowing that was all I needed? It's deceitful! And I know these aren't her policies, but she knew good and well what she was doing and I don't like doing business with people/companies like that. When I called customer service, the lady said the first charge was the membership charge and the next months charge was the regular $77 monthly charge. The girl at the salon did NOT tell me there was any type of membership charge?! It is all such a joke. So now I am going to be charged another $77.. a total of $154 for 10 tanning trips? If that. Please everyone spare yourself from going to this location and being deceived, taken advantage of and ripped off. Money is so tight for everyone right now and it's just not right.. read more

This review is for other first-timers like me: As far as I know, with my limited experience of tanning, all of the equipment seemed to work as expected. The woman at the front desk appeared to be doing everything she could to make my first tanning experience as good as she could. However, don't come here if you don't know what you're doing and expect to lean on the staff's expertise. When I spoke with the woman at the front desk, I made a few things clear: 1. I'd never done this before. 2. I was hoping for a light tan in preparation for my trip to the Caribbean the following day. 3. I have pale skin. (I believe that I used the term "pasty" to describe myself.) 4. I didn't know what to expect and I was trusting in her expertise completely. She got me some goggles and a bronzer ("to ensure I got the most out of my visit") and set me up for 12 minutes in the "fastest" bed as it would give a deeper tan than the "instant" bed. The process itself was fine and the customer service was great. I didn't feel pressured into purchasing packages or extras. It was a generally good experience. A few hours later that night, I noted that the tan was a little redder than I would have liked, but the website did mention that your tan might be red for some people/skin types. The next morning as I got up for my flight, I noted that my tan felt a little like a sunburn, but it wasn't too bad. By the time we reached the resort that afternoon, everything from my nipples to my knees in the front and my shoulders to my knees in the back was bright red and burning. I had gone commando on the tanning bed, so this included my butt; plane seats aren't great with a sunburned butt! Side note: I wasn't sure what the little washcloth was for, but I used it to cover my willy. By sheer chance, the area that it covered created a star-shaped pattern of unburned skin with my little guy right in the middle. I thought it looked pretty awesome, but my wife just shook her head and giggled. So, I spent my 50th birthday in the Caribbean unable to spend much time in the sun. The resort gift shop had an aloe lotion with Lidocaine, which was life-saving and allowed me to sleep. Five days after my tanning experience, the burning sensation on my skin faded. I noticed this as we went through airport security to go back home. On the sixth day after tanning, there were a few small blisters, and I started to peel. For the last two days I have lost so much skin from peeling that it literally flakes off when I move. I have spent hours peeling what I could reach and smothering myself with lotion. Things I have taken away from my experience: 1. Don't expect the staff to provide reliable guidance. I should have done better research before attempting this. 2. I suspect that I could have done without the bronzer, at a minimum. 3. If you're in the least uncertain, walk away and save yourself some pain. And peeling. 4. When the website says your skin may turn red, they mean, "you will get one of the worst sunburns of your life, and it will be all over your body." (At least if you fall asleep at the beach, maybe you get a bad burn on the back. In a tanning bed you get a bad burn on your back, stomach, thighs, behind your knees, on your love handles, in places that your swimsuit covers, the backs of your arms etc.) read more

I hate leaving bad reviews, but unfortunately I had to speak up on this one. Positives - very clean salon, friendly employees (in my experience), ability to check in online in advance (if you can get your account to work, which I could not). Negatives - I was explicitly clear when I went in my first time that I would only be in the area for one month, and was looking for an option for the high pressure beds that was the best deal given that I would only be here for 30 days. One of the management staff told me the '1 month commitment' option for the 'fastest' bed would be the best option, so I agreed! I signed the online pad thingy as he explained to me that if I did not cancel by X date, it would continue charging me on a month to month basis. At that point I once again clarified that I would only be here for one month, so as long as I cancelled by X date, if would stop charging me - he reassured me that yes, as long as I signed a cancellation form in enough time, I would only be charged for one month. Fast forward to the second time I visited - I asked the front desk employee for a cancellation form, just so I wouldn't forget to fill it out down the line. It was at that point she explained to me the '1 month commitment' option meant I would be charged for the first month AS WELL AS another additional month. Imagine my frustration, especially since it was a member of management that had failed to explain these terms to me correctly, after I explicitly outlined to him that I would only be here for one month. She suggested I contact the corporate office / customer service and speak with someone to try to get that second month charge taken off my account, but unfortunately I am not very hopeful at this point. Unfortunate, because I really did want to like this salon, and may be moving to the area for 3-4 years in 2020 - so they would have had my business long term had their employee not conned me into paying for more than I explicitly asked for. Will definitely be taking my business elsewhere unless their corporate office somehow rectifies the situation and allows me to cancel my account after this first month. EDIT - I was able to speak with Customer Service on the phone today, and after asking to speak with the representative's supervisor, she informed me they were able to cancel my membership after this first month. Thus, the two star review rather than one star. I will need to confirm this the next time I'm in the salon, but hopeful they actually did cancel that second undesired payment. read more

I only do the Versa spray tans so I can't comment on all the other beds. I love this location and just found out that the Versa is now a Versa PRO! This machine is so fantastic with the spraying and drying features, numbers on the ground for the right foot placement and then the new legs option to get another layer of bronze on your legs. The smell is also not as intense as it used to be and the drying feature makes it easy to come in and head back to your daily routine. The staff here is great and they know all about their specials and options. Everything is clean and I am going to make this my new go-to location to keep up the summer glow. I can't say enough great things about this new product and Versa Pro and just love it!!! read more

I have come here for spray tans a few times and this is probably one of my favorite tanning salons I have been to. Compared to other places that offer Versa Spa tans, the prices are way cheaper, and they often have promotions. The new Versa Spa booths tell you exactly where to place your feet and blow out hot air instead of cold air which is a very welcome change. The staff members were all super friendly, and I have never had to wait for a long time for a tan. I have never used the tanning beds so I cant speak about those! read more

I've been coming to sun tan city for over 3 years. I've seen lots of workers come and go, and I've always had a positive experience. However, I came in yesterday to tan (first time since COVID19) and the store was DISGUSTING. There was lotion all over the walls, the yellow blocks, and the floor. My bed had marks on it as well. You'd think since they talk about their "impeccable cleaning standards" that they might actually clean or care about this, but no. The new group of workers/management here do not care at all. This is the WORST team you've ever had. Chloe was rude the whole time as well. Over the course of 3 years I have loved sun tan city and all the people that worked there, but I will not be back. I have never left a review on yelp, but I have now seen something three times at this salon that the management should know about. Unfortunately I don't know the employees name, but there is girl who works the front desk that is beyond rude to customers. The first experience was with me, when I was asking questions about a promotion and it was one of those experiences where she was clearly so irrittated with me. I was just trying to understand, but the interaction was so uncomfortable that I stopped asking questions and have no idea if I payed more than I needed to. The second time was when a group of younger girls all came in together (maybe high school), and yes they were acting like teenage girls, but this person was openly rolling her eyes at them, looking at her co-worker with these exasperated looks, and being super short when she spoke to them. Then the final straw was this weekend, there was a woman who was asking for a refund on something, but she was being totally respectful and kept saying "I'm not frustrated with you at all", but this same employee was giving her a DEATH STARE. And whenever the customer tried to smile and talk to her, the employee would just purse her lips and continue to look at the woman but not say a word. It made me so uncomfortable that I didn't even check in and just left. Good businesses have to know it's not just the products, but also the PEOPLE. This person should not be in a job that requires interacting with people, especially when that is your first impression. I wish I knew her name, but I'm guessing management knows who she is - the only description is that she looks the least tan and older than most of the people that work there (not a criticism, just a description). For what it's worth, there was another girl at the front desk who I would say is the most tan of all the people who work there, and she started talking to the customer and was smiling and clearly trying to help her. I know this is a long review about one person, but it is literally one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever received and witnessed. I hope someone in management will read this and address it, I shouldn't have to dread going to the tanning salon wondering if this person will be there. read more

I live in Raleigh but came to this location because they are the only suntan city location that has the new versa spa pro sunless tanning option.The other Raleigh locations by my house use the Norvell system and I'm not a fan of that at all. It left me all uneven and blotchy. I was so excited to try the versa spa pro when I found out this location had one. I bought a package and so did my mom. Best spray tan ever. It doesn't leave you orange. The staff is always friendly and this location has really great management as well. I typically check in online so I don't have to wait. It was the most pleasant 2 weeks of tanning I've ever experienced. All the beds were hot, and top of the line. I've only been tanning for the past 2 months at this particular salon but I've had a great experience so far. When I first signed up, I spoke with Madison (I believe that was her name). She was extremely friendly and very helpful. I ended getting the fastest tanning package. Pricing is reasonable and you get to use the fastest bed or anything lower then that bed. Also when you first sign up you get a bunch of upgrades and free coupons for friends to use. Every few weeks they have specials going on for different beds, lotions, etc. This past week, you could tan in the instant bed for free. And on the weekends, you try any upgrade for half price. The salon is always very clean. All of the employees I've talked to have been friendly. I haven't been haggled too much on upgrades, buying lotions, etc. I saw in another review that the person was haggled too much but I don't think it's excessive, at least not to me. If someone asks or tells me about something they're selling, I politely say no thank you. I tried the sunless (spray tan) bed a few weeks ago. I hadn't used one in years but I had a wedding coming up so I wanted to try it. The employee was very helpful in explaining the process and took her time telling me how to use the bed. Another good thing is that their hardly ever is a wait. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to use a bed. Other things: Location is great for me, parking is never an issue and the salon is open long hours. I haven't dealt with the accounting side of STC. I saw in a previous review that someone had trouble canceling their membership. Whenever I decide to cancel, I will definitely keep an eye on my account to make sure it's canceled. Sometimes the radios/volume don't work on some of the beds. But it looks like you can hook up your phone to it. I'm not sure since I haven't tried. read more

I have to say that this particular Sun Tan City is my favorite one to go to. I live very central to a few different locations, but recently found the one in Durham. Not only is the staff very friendly, but also very knowledgable & seem to generally enjoy their job. Which always makes me feel great about a business I regularly go to! The salon itself is very clean, like the other salons I go to, but it's a little smaller so I would expect it to be able to stay maintained - so that's a definite plus! There is always some type of promotion going on & they are all usually always great! I have the Fastest membership & occasionally spray tan in their versa spa. Which leads me to why I cannot give this location 5 stars - their versa spa booth seems to always have an issue the last few times I've tried to use it. The staff is very apologetic & does their best to appease me, but it's unfortunate that I know I have to drive to another location in order to not have any issues when I arrive. If you're looking for a new tanning spot in Durham - this should be it!!! read more

I came in tonight for a spray tan and asked for a medium clear full body tan. However, the machine only sprayed my face, then stopped. I walked out of the machine and my face was dark brown and splotchy, which shouldn't happen with a medium clear tan. My friend also got a spray tan, but the machine stopped after only spraying her front side. I told the workers at the front and they didn't even apologize. They offered for me to try again, but I know this would only make the tan on my face worse. They put another spray tan on my account, but never apologized. Not sure if this was machine failure in both of their machines, or they set up the machines wrong. Very disappointed. read more

I have been coming to this Sun Tan City for a few years now came in with a coupon wasn't impressed then management changed the new manger was Victoria I came back a few more times and was blown away by the customer service . I do part time mystery shopping and picked up Sun Tan City as a shop the whole point behind mystery shopping is to find room for improvements ..I couldn't the place was great and it didn't matter what time you came in you always got the same great service Victoria was soon promoted and Cat took over and the place never missed a beat same great service same smiling faces . I have been in a few times this week and Sarina has waited on me HATS OFF to her last week they had a small line the lady in the front of me just didn't know what she wanted spay or bed fast or the top of the line I watched as Sarina took her time with her explaining each session with a smile making her feel unrushed and appreciated as a valued customer . She then took the next one with a smile I love this place I came in today and again Sarina waited on me she always smiles makes small talk and ask if you need lotion . I have been going here for years and it is definitely the cleanest, nicest salon I have been to. I have a monthly membership, but they are always running deals on products and visits and offer free upgrades on the weekend. They usually do a great job of getting you checked in and beds cleaned quickly. Its frustrating getting behind a first-time visitor because they have to get all of the paperwork filled out, I do wish they had a designated line for that on busy days. The staff is always very friendly and nice. I was there yesterday and by the time I got out of the bed there was a monsoon happening outside. They offered to walk me to my car with an umbrella! I just went to the new location in Durham and it is amazing!! They are offering cheap grand opening rates-$9.99 for UNLIMITED monthly tanning. Can't beat that. I am a college student and I am on a budget, and they have something for everyone. I tried out their sunless tanning called Versa Spa for a wedding I was in, and it turned out wonderful. I am super stoked I found a Sun Tan City here after living in the area about 5yrs,I had no idea until one of my makeup companies sent me the memo.. Not only do I love the color I get from the beds here, I love the staff! Couldn't feel more welcomed anywhere than I do here as they take the time to help me find what I'm looking for from lotions to the best deal if I'm looking for a quicker darker tan in a short time. Also wanna say that I did the whole spray tan stuff when I was younger and throughout my pregnancies, but hated the orange color, so I was skeptical about using their sunless booth but bc I had a free first time pass, I tried it. The results? AMAZING!!! I didn't have the slightest bit of orange tint, the pigmentation of the color I chose was insane, and I'm now an avid sunless user bc it's just beautiful. So if your not a bed user and worried ab orange tint, this is the place to go and get that bronzed goddess look we all love! I was a member of Sun Tan City, but had to cancel my membership due to unhealthy sun-related skin issues. I contacted the Sun Tan City Center at 1-270-740-5040 and was told that the money they drafted from my account ($5 per month) in order to freeze my membership over the winter was non-refundable. A total of $35. It could only be used as a credit toward services/membership at Sun Tan City. They have basicaly kept my money and provided me with absolutely nothing! Buyer beware!!!! read more

Sun Tan City - Faster bed - Tanning Near Me - Durham, North Carolina

This place is super clean and has a good number of beds with friendly staff. However, the staff is required to up sale the products and services to the point it takes an extended amount of time for each client to check-in. At prime hours you have a line out the door and the person checking in is being offered every lotion and upgrade they have. Then the computer system has all kinds of glitches more so than not. To run this small company I understand you have to up sale. Ok, so... now to the beds and the lamps. Just a few weeks ago all the basic beds were week. I went 5 days and felt very little. After not going for more than 3 weeks i should have got a little pink or brown or something. I went yesterday to the same bed for same amount of time after not going for a week and have a huge amount of color. I felt it. I wish this place would stay consistent with changing the lamps. Tell me if the bed is week and I am wasting my time. For the most part, up until the last few months I will say all was wonderful with lamps but know I wonder if they are trying to cut cost. I joined this place because my friend always had a rich color and it was because the lamps were kept changed. Now, I don't know! This is by far the cleanest salon in the area and they have the most updated beds. Most of the tanning consultants are friendly and helpful, especially Kat, Hanna, and Maddison. There is one consultant who isn't very helpful if you don't consistently buy products (i.e. if you don't buy something every time she sees you, but I just go at night to avoid her). Avoid around 5-6 pm, especially if you use lower level beds, be chase there's often a wait at this time. Wait until they do specials to buy upgrades, which they usually offer a couple times a year. I've been a sun club member for about a year and half and I'm overall very happy with the salon and service. read more
