Had a late lunch at Sun Sushi one afternoon. We only had about 30 min. To order for the all-you-can-eat and most of the rolls I wanted to try were not on the AYCE menu, so we ordered a drink and picked through the regular menu at our own pace. We ended up having a St. John's roll, a sun special roll, and a spicy tuna roll. We also had some unagi and yellowtail nigiri. All was fresh and tasty. Service was friendly. Ongoing sushi cravings often force me into uncomfortable situations, like visiting St. John's only sushi bar (Basho is more upscale Japanese, right?) despite hearing mixed reviews. Luckily, it was not as bad as some people said. Unfortunately, it wasn't as great as some people said. The good: - Miso soup was complimentary and brought out to the table upon arrival. - The spicy mayo used has more kick to it than most which was a happy surprise. - Tempura bits were well managed in their respective rolls. Not too much, not too little. The bad: - Service was spotty, slow, and inattentive. We had to go up and ask for our bill. - The rice was pretty mushy and unappealing. Hence the importance of tempura bits for texture. - The special vegetable roll of some sort just tasted like boiled veggies. - Sapporo was $9. All in all, I could have gone with a three-star because some parts were a-okay, but in the end, I think most sushi fans will have had much, much better. read more

Came back for some sushi as I had a hankering for some. I asked the server what were the most popular rolls and she mentioned the spicy tuna. So I ordered a spicy tuna, spicy salmon and a rainbow roll. All were okay for my expectations. I'll be honest with you, I'm not a sushi snob, okay maybe I'm a bit spoiled as my level of measure is Vancouver and Toronto sushi. Sushi is okay, not wow amazing but decent. Size is not huge of the rolls but it fits the need! I know I will be back if I feel like sushi but don't come here thinking it's Nobu or you shall be disappointed! read more

This sushi place was alright. I understand it can't be amazing because of location and lack of high quality and certain ingredients. Such as having no raw tuna for sashimi, instead overly seared tuna that was poor quality. The rice I ordered was like mush it was very overcooked. A lot of their seafood has been previously frozen which causes it to lose its natural juices and flavor when thawed. Its always better to have fresh seafood especially if your going to eat it raw. I guess if your really craving sushi in St. John's you could try this place out. read more

Worst sushi I've ever had (number one is in Richmond B.C.). I didn't get sick, it is just bad. They didn't know what Toro was, which is a staple. The rice was dense, packed too tight. Save money up and go to Basho. read more

It is good for those who never been to Japan or on the mainland especially in Vancouver. The sushi is good, not the best, and the curry isn't made how it is in restaurants in Japan (more like the home style throwing everything in a pot, not on a nice bowl, half the bowl with rice, the curry is on the other with toppings and meats over the rice, with the curry sauce poured over a little -- I'll link to an image on how it should look). Personally, service usually makes or breaks an experience, and the service here is always slow and fairly inattentive. I'm a vegetarian, so I can't speak about the quality of the fish, but their vegetable tempura rolls are alright, and their avocado rolls have a lot of avocado, so that's good. Vegetable quality can vary though, as it's hard to get decent greens on the island. read more

The all-you-can-eat is so, so good!! They have a really good variety of rolls, including some of their deluxe and specials (I really liked the Duckworth roll). Really great atmosphere (it was pretty busy during lunch) with nice decor, and clearly more popular with locals than Sushi Island. read more

Pretty great sushi! The pepper tuna sashimi could have benefited from a bit more of a peppered crust, as was a bit flavorless, but was seared beautifully. More traditional sushi like spicy tuna and scallop rolls were really nice! With the scallop though, wondered why it wasn't served whole instead of sliced and mixed up? I would give 1 1/2 starts, so I was nice in giving 2. If you have been to Japan or even ate Japanese food found in Vancouver/Toronto, your going to be very disappointed. I can cook more traditional Japanese food from home. Very limited in things, and nothing like real Japanese items; only the stereotypical ideas of Japanese foods. Great for people who never had real Japanese flavours, as it is very westernised. As for me, I expected more since living in Japan for almost two years. With the ability to get decent recipes online, and the ability to get many things online to help you in making other items, you can do better. read more

The service is hit or miss here. Miso soup is complimentary and decent (though it could use more tofu pieces). Their rolls are very good. It's true that most of their seafood is pre-frozen... but they do the best with what they have. I get take out from here about once a week. Their specialty roles are definitely the best choice, specifically the green dragon roll. All their tempura dishes are also top notch! The noodle bowls are terrible, way to salty, avoid at all costs. The are a little pricey, but what isn't in this town these days! I definitely recommend checking this place out, as long as you know that it's not the best sushi in the world, but it's definitely the best in Newfoundland!! read more

We technically wanted to have more seafood (well, sushi could be it?) in Newfoundland, but we tried Sun Sushi anyway. Always busy always consistent good quality sushi train with a menu so you can order anything you especially like.

Had a decent meal here. Enjoyed the sushi rolls and beef teriyaki. Service was attentive. Will be back to try more items on the menu.

If your vegan or vegetarian then please save yourself the trouble and don't go here. I'm vegan meaning I CANNOT eat fish. They served complimentary miso soup and I asked the server if it contained fish powder because it usually does, I told her I was vegan and she confirmed that it did have fish powder in it so I couldn't eat it. I originally ordered basic cucumber rolls and when it was brought out I noticed it had a sauce drizzled on the top which it normally doesn't, I asked the server if it contained fish and she explained that my order had been rung in wrong and that it did not contain fish. I ate two pieces before realizing something wasn't right, I opened the next piece of sushi only to discover huge chunks of raw fish. I immediately ran to the bathroom and threw up. The girl that messed up my order genuinely felt bad and was very nice, however the other staff didn't care at all and were very rude. My order came to 21.50 and they still expected me to pay. My friend spoke up and said she didn't think I should've had to pay for the meal and the lady making the sushi (who didn't even acknowledge me in the slightest when I was at the counter) told the cashier to ring it in for 50% off with a very annoyed and rude tone. At this point I had enough, the cashier ended up telling me not to worry about it and myself and my friend left. Safe to say it was probably the WORST service I have ever had except for the one employee that actually felt bad. Won't ever be back to this location. read more
