I had an enjoyable meal at Magic Wok. Their hot and sour soup is fantastic. I found the chicken friend rice to be a little bland, but good. My big recommendation would be to turn up the heat. As my guest and I were seated by the window, we were cold for the duration of our meal. read more

Had our order to go. It was ready on time. Price was very reasonable. Food was hot, delicious, and generous portions. Would recommend.

The deco is traditional Chinese and pleasant. Large dinning room and quick services. We had a simple dinner of chicken fried rice which came in a wok like fish with lid, and scallops with veggies. Even though we were hungry, we still had half the rice boxed to take away. The sauce on the scallops can be a little less but tasted good. We'll go back again while visiting St John's. read more

Off street parking, big and bright restaurant, friendly staff, quick kitchen. And that's just the start. The food is fresh, tasty, spicy is in fact spicy. The spicy tofu is fantastic, the Singapore noodles have a beautiful curry flavour and a bit of smoke, like they've been in a smokey wok. Ginger beef is a wonderful addition, as is the grill seafood platter. They also have a decent range of Asian and local beers and a fully stocked bar. I have two complaints - they don't have an eggplant dish, and they don't do weekend dimsum. Given what I had for dinner though, I'm willing to overlook both these things and encourage everyone to go, if you want objectively great Chinese food. While I'm sure the North American Chinese menu is great, we stuck with the special and traditional dishes and weren't disappointed! read more

On our last night of staying in Newfoundland. We wanted Chinese food and decided to check out Magic Wok. At first we were kinda skeptical about eating here cuz there was no Chinese ( or Asian ) customers there. Even our waiter didn't speak Chinese. But to our surprise, it was quite authentic. ( too bad we live all the way in California. ) We started with the miced beef soup. Were quite happy with it. Ordered the sizzing cod with black bean sauce, seafood hot pot, strings beans. I am from Vancouver. Just moved to St. John's and was looking to satisfy my craving for chinese without whipping out my wok. The Magic Wok has the classic cantonese fare, great atmosphere and service. Portion sizes are smaller than what I am used to but that just gave me an excuse to order more items (not that I see huge value in that, but the dishes were delicious). We were big fans of this place until we actually went there to sit down and dine rather then getting take-out. The take-out was amazing everytime we got it and you got alot. The only complaint was the veggies just being frozen or canned, it kind of took away from it a little bit, but overall it was great When we actually went in to dine, it was giant disappointment. The portions are small, they even come on plates that have grooves in them to hold the different portions and lets just say they under serve. I had one of the combos (rice-chicken balls and beef&broccoli) and there was 6 pieces of broccoli and 1 scraggly piece of beef. Pretty disappointing when I could have just ordered take out from them and gotten double of what I ordered for the same price. There are a lot of other chinese food places in the area that you can go to and get a decent feast for the same price as they charge here. But if your thinking of ordering take-out its worth a shot. read more

Excellent dinner with the family this evening at Magic Wok. This was my first time at the restaurant in about 5 years. The decor was pleasant, service was excellent, and the food was very reasonably priced. To put a cherry on the cake (pun intended), dessert was on the house. I've experienced better Chinese food many, many times. About once a year I try the Magic Wok, and every time I wonder how it hangs onto it's reputation for a great place to eat. Had a sizzling black bean and beef platter last week. How many ways can you say bland. When I want Chinese it's generally the Hong Kong for me. The Magic Wok is definitely a more happening place, the Hong Kong is almost empty most of the time, but the food is better. From what I understand it's where the Chinese community choose to eat. All that being said I have not had the Kam Lo Wontons nor their hot and sour soup. Will try both when I venture back there again next year. read more

Magic Wok Eatery is the best Chinese food restaurant in Newfoundland. If you elect to eat there, then do solicit some recommendations from the slightly more authentic part of the menu. If you like hot and sour soup, the version on offer at the Magic Wok is quite good. Their kam lo wontons are divine. This restaurant has been an institution for over 20 years now. An update: we dined at the Magic Wok Eatery instead of take out and we were impressed. I think the combination of eating it piping hot and picking better dishes is the reason why the dine-in experience was better than the take-out. We ordered the steamed dim sum sampler, deep fried BBQ pork bun, and spicy chicken as appetizers, of which the dim sum and pork bun were preferred. Then we ordered the lemon chicken, sweet and sour prawn sizzler, and pork green beans, all of which were very tasty. Service was good. read more

I have only had take away once here but was very surprised and happy that the restaurant knows about gluten free. They told me what dishes I could eat and any modifications that had to be made for other dishes. I ended up getting the Singapore noodles. The portion was massive and definitely satisfied my greasy Chinese food craving. read more

Years ago Magic Wok used to be the place to go for delicious Chinese fare - fresh ingredients cooked right, large selection of dishes. Last night we ordered takeout - green beans with garlic, black bean chicken, medium-spicy peanut chili chicken, spring rolls, and steamed rice. Nothing was fit to eat. The main dishes were tasteless, the spring rolls were tiny, the beans were vastly overcooked, and absolutely everything except the steamed rice was drowning in oil.
