You don't want all the different shapes for your rugs. Rectangles and circles are basically it. Here at Industry City, Dorge was my dude. He had his people pull out the three different rugs we were considering in the size stack we liked so we could see them out on a floor. This is NOT an easy process, and I would've really felt a little bad not buying a rug after seeing the labor involved in pulling the rugs out,...but luckily we wanted one of them. He was super nice, knew his business, and gave us a little bit of a deal. These are not the most affordable rugs in the world, but they're also not the most expensive. And most importantly, the quality is good.

Some things have changed…read moreover time just due to changes in ownership, but the staff remains mostly the same and they have always been very friendly with us. It can often times be very hit or miss, but that's the nature of an outlet store like this - things come and go very quickly and often what they get is what they can get. But if you're lucky and persistent, you will eventually get what you're looking for. If are able to buy multiple items at once too, they often times are able to give you an additional discount if you ask for it (and are a pleasant customer). We have gotten several different pieces from this singular location, including a credenza, several lamps, office chairs, and some accessories in the Hay and stationary section. We bought two counter chairs, and after months of returning several times we were able to finally find our third matching one as well (worth it). You have to expect defects and imperfections, which is why they end up in this store in the first place. Just make sure to double check everything before you do your final purchase (if it's electronics, they will test it for you if you ask too.) Good luck!

Annie's features excellent items for those of all ages and stripes, which seem well curated, well organized, and vary delightfully in tone from the silly to the sublime. And while you can find very nice items here, prices tend to be fairly manageable. There's even a small enough assortment of home items--organic, bespoke soaps and laundry detergents and home supplies--that you can come up with a vague reason to visit even if not gift shopping and find a thing or two for yourself. One of the best aspects of Brooklyn in general--and Park Slope in particular, it seems to me--is the ability to rather easily find unique local shops to support. Annie's beautifully exemplifies this fortunate fact.

Whether I…read morelived in Georgia, Florida or Pennsylvania we drove, but what to do if you don't have a car in Manhattan? If you live in the city, don't let transportation deter you. There's the weekend ferry -- I wouldn't go on the weekend, but more of that in a bit -- and the subway/bus combo during the week. (Note to self: 4 or 5 to Borough Hall, walk to Boerum Place/Joralemon Street for B61 toward Park Slope, disembark in front of store.) Living in a studio apartment, Ikea is a good choice for furniture adaptable to whatever space you have. Note that you have to be a bit handy as pieces come unassembled, and if you're doing everything on your own you've got to pull components from the shelves. We went to Red Hook Tuesday. The store, configured like all other Ikeas, was virtually empty! The downside is during the week staffing appears to be cut. Unable to find anyone to help us, we sat at the computer and pulled things on our own. It helps to research what you want beforehand. Finally -- an employee happened by. I was worried that by doing it solo we'd forget something 'minor' like a hinge, but she advised us that the computer automatically lists the components essential to construction. (I was nonetheless glad that she took over.) Normally 'we' -- meaning my husband -- would collect items from the warehouse. But not this time! We paid to have everything pulled and delivered. And it worked out famously! When we checked out, I asked the cashier -- no check-out line, btw -- if it's this quiet on weekends. She laughed and said "it's a madhouse on weekends. You were smart to come during the week!" So yeah - that was our positive experience at Ikea/Brooklyn. An extra bonus was the bus drive through Brooklyn, the outskirts of an area I lived in back in the 1980s.
