A girlfriend and I went here last week for a coffee date and we were so impressed! We sat on what they told us was their "new" patio out back and she had espresso and I had the honey lavender latte- iced. Both were so good and the patio's vibe was perfect! We went on a weekday during the day so it wasn't too crowded but there were quite a bit of people inside working or studying. To top it off, the one staff member we spoke to was extremely friendly and was trying to make conversation with us like he actually cared that we were there. So nice! What a gem of a coffee shop! This was on my daughter's to-try list, so we popped in on a Saturday early afternoon, and I'm so glad we did. It had a pleasant space on the corner of Jefferson Ave and Winnebago Street. A few tables are outside to the right of the front door. Upon stepping inside, we immediately felt at home. The barista took the time to explain the coffee choices and make some recommendations. We both settled on a chocolate latte: mine was iced, hers was hot. I truly believe there is no better coffee in STL than Sump. I'm not into the sweet drinks most have but these are always light, easy to drink, and their drinks other than just a black coffee (which is perfect) are also really good. In the summer, coffee palmers are life. The service is also really good and even though there may be a long line, it moves quick. Patio is a nice hang and as a bonus, there's usually dogs to pet. read more

Small coffee shop with an almost emo-vibe that is trying really hard to be cool. They don't offer any food and have only niche variety's of coffee. The coffee is good, don't get me wrong, but none of it is normal tasting and it is expensive. I usually ring in fall by buying pumpkin spice everything. Basic or not, I have no shame. When I heard Sump had a PSL option, I knew I had to try it. I appreciate that it wasn't loaded down with sugar, like how Starbucks is, and I could still taste the espresso. It was a good balance of pumpkin and coffee. I would definitely come back and try other drinks! Drinks are a little pricer, but you get what you pay for in terms of quality. Service was quick, and they delivered our drinks to the table we were sitting at. The interior space was bigger than I thought it would be. This is a great place for coffee enthusiasts who love craft coffee! The place feels small and quaint and would be a great place to study or to meet up with someone. I got a black coffee which was super smooth and bright tasting. My wife got a bourbon caramel latte which was beautiful in presentation (see picture in review), and you can taste the hint of bourbon and caramel come through without being too sweet or overpowering (like many coffee shops often do with speciality lattes). This is the last spot I made it to on my list of must-try coffee in St. Louis, only because of the location being off my usual path. It was worth the wait and the drive. Wow! Their cold brew did not disappoint, brewed Kyoto style which justifies the slightly higher price. You can taste the difference. As soon as I walked in and was greeted in a very welcoming, non-off-putting way by a friendly barista who went over their clever transit-line style map, I was excited to get Sump-in'! I debated between the nitro & Kyoto Cold brew but went with the latter to try it in its purest form. Excellent. I'll be back for nitro! Parking on the side street was easy, but I was there mid-morning. On a weekend or during the morning rush, it might be tricky. Awesome. Just Awesome. I've had Sump Coffee at Rise and other locations, but I have never been to the motherland. This place is cool, but this is not a place where I would personally do work (no outlets or limited/very busy) or come grab a quick cup of drip coffee or cold brew. It's a place to chat, relax, and maybe enjoy a few pages of a book. The people are nice and there is no real food/ a few bakery items here and there. But - you order your coffee and they bring it to you in like 5-15m, then you pay them when you exit. This is also around Cherokee St., where there are some other amazing restaurants! A small and cozy coffee shop, decorated with wallpaper and themes that are characteristic to create the grunge ambiance upon a guest's first step in.... I came here on New Year's day (I was desperately looking for open coffee shops and had called beforehand to check if they were open). I remember it to be very crowded, and it took a little bit of wait before someone got up to leave and I snatched a spot at the end of the bar bench. I loved the vibe, and the staff were all very friendly. They very patiently waited as I glanced through their menu items, and were very knowledgeable when I approached them with questions. Their coffee is very aromatic, and I had ordered the pour-over. My friend ordered a peppermint latte, and it was quite interesting. Sump has great coffee and great ambiance. Large wooden tables, cool wallpaper, and eclectic signs. The coffee I had was from Honduras and matched accurately with the description. Each cup is poured/ brewed individually using pour over. The coffee I had contained some notes of raspberry which I was definitely able to taste and surprised me. The coffee is served then in a little container with a little serving cup. The serving cup I had was a really nice little ceramic cup that was unique. The only reason I knocked off a star is because the coffee I had was not served very hot. Perhaps this is a result of the pour over method that is used. read more

Imagine if the manliest, most masculine, most metal of Snow White's 7 dwarves became a freakin' magically good master of espresso and created the most magnificently adorable man-cave of a cottage for his coffee bar. You've just pictured Sump. Love. It. I honestly love every single thing about Sump - the aesthetics, the vibe, and ... Oh yeah... The cofffffeeeeee. I'm trying, doc's orders, to go 99% caffeine-free. I pardoned myself for good behavior from caffeine jail,however, and gave myself a cheat day (or, who am I kidding, haha...3 cheat days) just for Sump. TOTALLY worth it. Day 1 - 2 cortados. An Ethiopia Guji, and a Peru. Both delicious, but Peru was just a little too "bright" for my palate, and I preferred Ethiopia. Day 2 - another Ethiopia cortado. The superfriendly barista recommended, for my second bevvie, a shot of the Ethiopia espresso mixed into seltzer, since I don't like milky coffee drinks. New and interesting! The bubbles make it awesome, and the Seltzer adds a lemony, bitter kick to it. I dig! Day 3 - yet another cortado, and a bag of Ethiopia beans for the road. Y'all. I'm in *love*. Sump is by far the best coffee of my java-snobbin' life. If I lived anywhere near the gorgeous red brick and graffiti if St. Louis it'd be my daily haunt. read more

I love it! If I could, this would totally conclude my review. Sump Coffee is just what I like; intimate, excellent coffee, with minimal yet dramatically chic décor. The A.B.E. (all black everything) effect speaks volume without saying a solitary word. Black walls (white stenciling), black drapes (drawn for a touch of sunshine), black uniforms, black matte coffee machine, black eco sleeve, black lids, black stools, black boards, black drops, black windowsill and black t-shirts for sale. There's plenty of seating and enough quietness to work in peace. Lindsay, created the perfect Ethiopia pour-over. She's the sweetie pie you'll find focused on crafting brews at the bar. Pull up a stool and watch her work magic. The gentleman taking my initial drink order was a real charmer except I forgot his name (shame on me). Service: 5/5 Stars. The barista was on point with technique, knowledge, and friendliness. The equipment is top notch here. A new San Remo Racer machine, and even a Puc self tamper. The best part-- the Barista actually knew how to use the equipment. Pre-envision at 3-bars and a volumetric ramp-up. No ramp down. If I drank pour-overs-- I'd be all about the Poursteady. They have three siphon filters also if that's your jam. Environment: 5/5 stars. Great natural lighting at the bar and a solid scent of the current roast. read more

Let me try to explain my visit in two words: 1) Educational 2) Deliciousness When I walked up to the counter to place my order I already had a few questions regarding the menu and of course Scott was available to answer and education me on some coffee lingo. He really is a genius and uses some words to describe coffee that I would never think of. Normally I do not find it difficult to carry on a a conversation, but talking about coffee is obviously the one area in which I fail. I was amazed at the types of brewing stations he has; each does a different job apparently. I can't even remember exactly what I ordered, but I know that it was a cappuccino and a latte in one cup. Foamy, but not too foamy. Sweet, but also bitter. I enjoyed every last sip and even passed it around my table for friends to try. I believe we were all amazed at its consistency as well as taste. Kudos to Scott for making a perfect cup. The atmosphere (as other have mentioned) is simple and sweet. There aren't a bunch of spots to hang out; but for the crowd in on the day I went we all had a nice table to sit at or chair to sit on. I believe the other patrons visiting were enjoying their coffee and conversations as well. This is a good place to come in for a coffee and stay for a nice chat. This place spoke to my soul. It's somehow dark and open at the same time. I love the atmosphere and decor and general feel of the place. We were greeted by a guy who walked us through their coffee menu and was happy to take the time to explain some unique menu items (in my case, I've been wildly curious about trying matcha but still wasn't quite sure what it even was). Eventually we settled on a matcha latte with oat milk, a dirty chai latte with oat milk, and a chocolate biscotti. Although I've decided matcha is not for me, the latte was beautiful and you can tell they took great care making it. This is without a doubt a place that knows good coffee and has very talented baristas. My mom loved her dirty chai and pastry. The only reason I docked a star is because it's so popular that finding a table was hard (we had to hover until someone graciously let us know they were leaving) and it is fairly pricy - $5.50 for my latte, $1 for the alternate milk, $6.50 total. Well worth it, just don't think I could afford to come here regularly. I did buy a bag of their Columbia beans though - I trust they roast good product and I could NOT pass up the packaging.
