Wow! To be honest, I'm in the small minority of people who don't go crazy for Sushi. In fact, I'm the guy who always orders Teriyaki Chicken at the Sushi restaurant. Sacrilege! I know, I know. However, I had heard some good things about this place and my girlfriend LOVES sushi so we figured we'd give it a try. Since it was our first time, we decided to proceed with caution and only ordered one Sumo Roll and split it (a mistake I would soon regret). Upon taking my first bite of the Baja Roll, the first thing I noticed was that there was no "fishy-ness." Everything tasted fresh, flavorful and...wait...is that...REAL CRAB MEAT??? Oh my good Lord in Heaven, that is definitely real crab meat! Needless to say, I was totally sold after the first bite. The crispness of the Tempura Shrimp combined with the sweetness of the (real) crab, and the tanginess of whatever awesome sauce they used was like a trip to Disneyland for my taste buds. It was then that I realized that I was going to have to be extra nice to my girlfriend so that I could talk her out of her half of our Sumo Roll. Sadly, my efforts were in vain. She made it very clear that there would be no more sharing this evening. There's a happy ending to the story though (for me anyway). I failed to mention this earlier, but these rolls are called Sumo for a reason and they definitely live up to their name. In other words, they are big! So big, in fact, that my dainty girlfriend couldn't finish all of hers. What a shame. Never one to let food go to waste, I offered to do what any gentleman do...finish the rest of it for her (who said chivalry was dead). She reluctantly agreed and moments later, our Baja Roll become nothing more that a wonderful, delicious, memory. All's well that ends well :) But, if I could have just a bit more of your time, there's something else I'd like to add. This review would be incomplete if I failed to mention what wonderful customer service we received. Everyone was so friendly! So in conclusion, if you're on the fence about trying Sumo Roll, like I was, stop debating and start making your way over to this awesome little shop. Just make sure that if you bring a friend, you both get your own rolls because, trust me, you are not going to want to share. Enjoy! read more

This place is great. The new management was so kind and greated me as soon as I walked in. Thats not the only change though, the menu selection has increased a lot as well. Food is still very good. Today they didn't have one of the ingredients for my burrito but they substituted it, and gave me a complimentary bowl of soup so warm me up from the cold outside while I waited! read more

Easily my favorite sushi in Berkeley, for many reasons! The pricing is excellent, very affordable. The food is delicious and always comes out right, especially their kappa maki roll! The cucumber is dressed in their house poke dressing and it's absolutely delicious, a delightful elevation of the standard cucumber roll. The customer service is absolutely top notch. Always friendly, always fast, and just wonderful people to interact with. They recognized me and were happy to see me back! Only once has my food ever taken more than 15 minutes, and I was given a free bowl of miso soup to eat while I waited. It was hardly 20 minutes and they gave me a free bowl even though I ordered to-go! Wonderful people, great food, fast service, great price, it's all there. I thought Sumo Roll was ... ok. The quality of ingredients was pretty decent and the portions are actually very big. I found the price to be pretty steep for what you get, but not the end of the world. My real issue with this place was that the few times I went I was on a lunch rush and it just seemed to take forever, even with not many other people in line. I literally pass this place everyday walking home and I never tried it until yesterday. The store itself is really nice and clean and the person working was friendly. I ordered the poke bowl with all salmon and the house sauce. The fish portion was less than I thought it was be, but they cut it up in large chunks and it tasted fresh. The upside is that the bowl was $8.75 which is a little cheaper than some other places around campus. It took longer than expected to come out considering that there weren't that many people waiting for their food but overall, I was impressed and would definitely come back!! read more

This is an unexpectedly great little place on the edge of campus. Came here last night with the family, and really enjoyed the food. Everything served at this restaurant is a head above what you get at other sushi places. The miso soup has a lovely smokey edge. The house salad is fresh and gorgeous. The Okasa roll is a must-try - it is a glorious masterpiece of texture and layers of flavor. Unlike any other roll I have tried. Chirashi Don was very elegantly presented, and the raw file of prawn may have been the best single piece of sashimi I have ever tried. The quality of fish is just stellar here. The spicy salmon hand rolls were nicely sized and really hit the spot. Chilled house sake was perfect. Cheesecake for dessert finished out the meal perfectly. Also, a note on service. People who work here take their jobs seriously and strive for excellence. The kitchen staff is thoughtful and dishes are made to order with love and care. Our server was managing the room all by herself and did a great job communicating with us. Everything brought to our table was hot, fresh, and just right. Cannot praise this restaurant enough. Step aside Tako Sushi and other "classic" Berkeley Japanese food places. Sumo Roll is probably going to be my go to especially as a college student. The restaurant itself is very clean and well designed. The menu is diverse and loaded enough while not having the typical problem of "too many different things and none are great". I've gotten the poké bowl both times I've been here and the quality has been consistently great. It seems like they don't give you a whole lot of protein (but maybe that's just because the fish quality is so good). But since additional crab salad comes free of charge, you can't really complain, especially for the price. Service and staff have been consistently great. Helen, who works the register and waits tables is always super friendly and strikes the perfect balance of checking if you need anything without being overbearing/bothersome. Is it world class dinning? No. Is it the best college town, good value, great quality place to get Japanese food? Most definitely. read more

This place just opened three months ago right underneath of the building where I live (Oxford hall). The staff is friendly and the decorations are nice, very green! I ordered a Baja California and it was delicious, very fresh products and I think real crab, it sure taste it like it! I usually don't like too healthy food but this place is the exception! If you appreciate fresh food, this is the place for you! Why four stars instead of five then? Well, I don't know; some atmosphere inside the restaurant was missing. But great fresh food! This is a wonderful spot near the campus. The food is fresh and delicious, and the place itself is calm and restful--unlike many noisy crowded spots nearby. I have ordered the rice bowl with a variety of toppings several times, including spicy tuna, sushi rice, many vegetables including corn and mixed greens--all healthy, fresh, and in ample portions. The owners are a young couple who also cook and serve. The young woman owner in particular is lovely--very kind and attentive. I've been on a hunt to find a good sushi-type place in Berkeley so I decided to try this place out for take-out (because it was getting late and they were going to close.) What's nice/convenient is they allow you to order straight from the yelp app. I ordered the Shinsen role, and the quoted pick up time was much longer than how fast it was actually ready (30 minutes v 15 minutes) which was nice, but annoying because it was not accurate. In terms of food, the portions here are pretty large portions but the roll was filled with an awful lot of lettuce. Overall, the taste was fine but nothing special; if anything I could see the flavors not meshing well together had I eaten more than half. I don't think I'd be rushing to come back here anytime soon, but I would come to possibly try one of the other sushi rolls. read more

Super fresh ingredients, friendly service, and large portions! The vegetarian rolls are really good. The Kabuki has a fresh beet slaw which adds a nice creaminess and crunch and the Midori has spicy tofu, only wish there was more tofu in the roll. read more

Sumo Roll is under new management. I was just in there last night and had dinner. Terrific food: all fresh with many choices of fish, chicken and a whole variety of additions to one's "bowl" dinner which is what we ordered. I've never seen a menu with all these choices for one bowl.The new owners/chefs told me they are only open for the last 15 days and decided to keep the same name. BTW, they do have sushi too! We went there after an event at the UCB Magnes Museum. Its very convenient if you are going to the Marsh Theater, David Browar Center which are also all on the same block of Allston. Average sushi burrito. Can't taste a lot of the different ingredients because the kelp was overpowering all other flavors. Texture of sushi was too soggy. Wouldn't mind eating whenever I feel eating something healthy. They close early so don't expect to have it for dinner. read more
