Meadows Lodge - Bonfire in the backyard

Meadows Lodge

Love this cabin! My friends and I have been booking the Meadows for our annual weekend getaway in…read moreHocking Hills for the past 5 years now. Well, we missed last year's trip because it was booked up. Meadows Lodge is nicely layed out with beautiful solid wood decor throughout and plush carpet to make you feel at home. At 6,700+ sq/ft, it's the largest cabin available there. It has 8 bedrooms (15 total beds), 4 full baths, 25+ acres, hot tub, internet and DirecTV with a 120 inch theater with surround sound, roulette table, card table, pool table and Foosball table in the basement, volleyball court, in-ground heated pool, built-in grill, (bring your own propane) built-in bar, corn hole, horse shoes and access to 160 acres of hiking. The full kitchen comes complete with cookware and utensils and there's also a kitchenette and a laundry room in the basement. In the yard they have a large fire pit with bench seats around it. You have to provide your own firewood, but they have delivery services available. The cabin is about a 20 minute drive from some of the attractions at Hocking Hills State Park. We always make a drive over to Old Man's Cave for some scenic hiking. Check it out! They also have zip lining and horseback riding close by, but we have yet to try that out. The Meadows gets booked up pretty quick, so we usually need to reserve it a year in advance. We usually reserve it for early spring and for 3 nights and it usually comes out to around $1700. When divided amongst our usual group of 17 or so people, it's really reasonable. Late spring and summer rates can almost double in cost, so we find this time of the year the best deal. We can't justify paying that much more just to have the pool open! If you have a large group or a smaller one, book the Meadows Lodge or any of the smaller cabins in the area for a great time in Hocking Hills!

A group of avid birders and I took advantage of this lodge on a rather cool summer weekend…read morerecently. 9 of us attended and enjoyed the 7 bedrooms (plus loft with double beds) offered by our host Theresa. As has been noted, the lodge comes with two kitchens and two family rooms. Most everything you need is indeed included, especially a copy of Kangaroo Jack with the upstairs TV. I must have watched that fine film approximately 0-18 times in our two day stay. We never could get the 10 person hot tub up to temperature to actually use. I think the highest it got was around 90 - not exactly hot tub worthy. But this is a minor gripe as we were quite busy with our birding in the area. There is a fire pit on the side of the lodge which made for a lovely evening next to a bonfire with some beers and smores. Birders love smores, it's a known fact. The 4 bathrooms included in the lodge is nice when you have such a large group, no fighting over showers and the like. The nice decal of the scuba diver on the toilet tanks adds a pleasant diversion while you're taking a whizz. There is zero cell service, except for Sprint customers, apparently. This is kind of a bummer as nobody in the entire world has Sprint. While I suppose it may be desirable for some persons to completely disconnect from society, birders and persons of my age tend to get a little twitchy after 24 hours of no internet access. It would be delightful if the cabin had wifi. Luckily all our group arrived before darkness fell -- I wouldn't want to try to find the place in the dark. You might end up in a ditch. The owner recently had the steep gravel drive replaced partially with concrete and it's a good thing. I think several of my fellow birders would have failed to scale a gravel drive so very steep and would have been stuck doing their birding from the bottom of the drive. Another "nice to have" would be better televisions, the current models are small and difficult to see from across the large family rooms. We wanted to watch some shows on birding but found it difficult to do so and had to resort to going outside to see birds -- not ideal. Checkout is at 11:00am and I can see how it could be a scramble to get up and get everything prepped for checkout, as it is expected you have the dishwasher run and unloaded, as well as all trash taken out, I believe. Luckily birders are used to being early risers to "catch the worm", as they say. All in all we had an excellent experience just bordering on five stars. Internet service at the lodge and a more liberal checkout policy would push it firmly into 5 star territory for me. That being said, I would definitely return here for activities other than birding as well, as you are in the edges of Hocking Hills state park and there are lots of activities nearby. Kudos to our host Theresa for a fine stay and thanks to my fellow birders for such a fine weekend watching birds and Kangaroo Jack.

For those who want the short version: This place is an awesome place to stay for a vacation get…read moreaway for a large group! Here's the detailed version: The house is located in Hocking Hills and is the perfect place for a large group of people! There are 3 floors with 8 bedrooms and 11 beds. The top floor is a loft that has 2 beds. There are 4 bedrooms on the main floor- 3 that have 1 bed, and 1 room that has full sized bunk beds. On the bottom floor, there are 3 bedrooms- 2 rooms that have 1 bed and 1 room that has bunk beds. Note: all the beds are queen/full sized beds even the bunk beds so the house could potentially sleep 22 people. The house is a beautiful lodge with hardwood floors (don't forget to take slippers!). There are 2 kitchens which was a bonus when cooking for a large group! There are also 2 dining room tables (one on the main floor, one downstairs) and 2 living room spaces. The house has 4 bathrooms (2 on each floor). Note: If you go there with a lot of people, try to be one of the first to take a shower because the hot water DOES run out if everyone is taking consecutive showers. When you go, towels (including beach towels) and linens/blankets are provided. They also provide some toilet paper and soap (dish soap, shampoo, etc) which was enough for a 2 day stay but if you're staying for the whole week, you may need to bring more. In the kitchen, you can find plates, silverware, some pots and pans, cups. They have some cooking utensils like spatulas, ladles, can opener, etc. They have a coffee maker and filters but if you like fresh coffee beans, you have to bring your own coffee grinder. There are 2 TVs there which both have DVD players and direct TV but they don't have HDMI connections so you can't hook up an Xbox. There's no wi-fi and you probably won't be able to get good cell phone service while there. But they do have corn hole, scrabble, taboo and a couple decks of cards for game night! It was actually great to get away from technology i.e. internet, etc and enjoy time with the family. In order to get there, you have to drive on some country roads- some that look like they are only one lane so I recommend trying to get there before dark just because it's so hard to see when it's night time. Also on the website, they recommend 4 wheel drive which I totally agree with! You have to drive up this steep gravel/stone driveway. One of our cars was a sedan and had trouble getting up the entire way. If you don't have 4WD, you can still make it up (although if it may be a problem if it's snowing) but try driving in reverse. Our larger cars (mini SUVs/Vans that didn't have 4WD) had problems going up driving forward, but were able to make it up in reverse. Again, it's a lot easier driving up in reverse during the day than at night. The contact person is Theresa. She was quick to respond to questions we had about the place via email. I didn't really have much contact with her since someone else dealt with the reservation but she seemed nice when I met her when we checked out of the lodge.

The cabin was fairly secluded, but not too far from shopping... It's in a back road, and though there were some other dwellings nearby, we never felt intruded upon or otherwise near anyone else (note: we were there in late winter, so the trees were bare... In the late spring/summer/fall, this wouldn't be a factor). The cabin itself was FLAWLESSLY maintained and equipped... We had plenty of firewood, propane, toilet paper, dishes, utensils, etc. Everything was clean and in it's place... The kitchen, bathroom, outdoor propane grill, and hot tub were immaculate... Decor was just what it should be; log cabin charming... Our cell phones had no service, but internet and satellite TV worked reliably... Even had a blue-ray player and a small but adequate sound-system that we could hear on the back porch while having a romantic dinner al fresco... Clean and functional bathroom with shower, bath, modern toilet, large capacity hot water tank, first aid kit, plunger, vacuum, etc... Seriously, better equipped than even your better motor lodges.. There are even some personal touches/fun games that the proprietors play with their guests, if you wish to participate (Just make sure to read the guest book/literature that is left for you!) :-) A day spa, this is not.. But for a TRUE quaint, "home-away-from-home," it is... We WILL be back, and WILL recommend to friends... Well done!!!

When you walk in there is a lovely smell that greets you. The hot tub was amazing! The reclining sofa was nice to watch movies on. They had every pan/pot/spatula/etc you could need. The pond out front was very nice to walk out the front porch and see. It rained/snowed the weekend we were there so we didn't get outside much except to go to the hot tub and come back inside. The reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is purely personal preferences. It is not as secluded as I was hoping. You can see other homes/cabins around you and at night you can see/hear cars on the road from the hot tub. The bed was a firm foam mattress. I woke up sore both mornings. There are no floor lamps in the cabin. The only lighting is the ceiling lights which made it tough when I wanted to go to bed and my husband was up reading in the bedroom. There is no remote to the fireplace and the buttons were worn off so we couldn't really tell what button to push to turn the fan on. We could only get it to turn on. There is also only one 50" x 60" blanket on the couch which is big enough for one person. The internet was great for our phones but to stream Netflix...not so much. Our show was in slow mo a lot. lol AGAIN....this is all my personal preference and does not change my opinion that it is a great cabin!

We apologized and said we didn't realize, he rudely pointed to the sign and said "it's right there" ...he could've handled it more professionally and it would've been a different story. We weren't being loud or causing a disturbance in any way to be treated in that manner. That is not how you handle paying customers. I work for the public myself and that is so unacceptable. Next time we go to Hocking Hills we will take our money elsewhere. Hopefully anyone choosing to stay at one of their cabins will be treated with respect!

We arrived at Hocking Hills Saturday afternoon, hiked and hung out at the lodge. We then went to our cabin, arriving around 7:00 pm tired and ready for a campfire. But...the driveway was too steep for my SUV to climb. We attempted 4 times and gave up, there was no way my car was going to make it up the hill. We couldn't even see the cabin it was up a huge hill and around a bend. The reservation warned of a steep incline so I called the office when I made the reservation and was told that its only a problem in inclement weather - that was not true! I have a 2024 SUV, I do not have an old car that would be questionable. We couldn't get cell service to call the office so we left and drove to the nearest hotel thinking we would find somewhere else to stay. I reached a lady at Cabins by the Caves and was told we should have been able to get up the hill - her car gets up the hill with no problem and so does the cleaning ladies. Well - my car couldn't and I wasn't going to burn up the engine trying. She eventually gave me my money back and told us "never call again". We tried 4 hotels in the area, all were booked. We had no choice but to drive all the way back home. Needless to say our weekend was a bust. We lost money on our zipline tour and we lost our weekend. DO NOT RENT THIS CABIN WITHOUT A 4 WHEEL DRIVE!!

My wife and I spent the weekend at Lake Escape with another couple for a Valentine's weekend…read moreretreat. We choose it after doing an advanced search on HockingHills.com. We submitted the reservation form about two weeks before we wanted to go. We received a phone call the next day from Crista confirming our reservation and taking our credit card information which they charged half as a deposit. They said we'd receive an email with more information on check-in etc. the next day. A week went by and we hadn't heard anything so we emailed them at lakeescape@hockinghills.com asking for those details and received a response the next day with check-in information. We were very concerned because we couldn't find ANY reviews of the cabin online (hence I'm writing one now), but we decided to try it anyway and we were not disappointed. We arrived on a Friday evening and left Sunday morning. It was only an hour from both couples homes in Columbus. The driveway was very steep and just lose gravel. It took both couples a few attempts to get our vehicles up the drive because they kept loosing traction, but if you backed up and gave it a "running" start you were usually OK. It may not be possible to get up the driveway if it's storming or muddy. Once there, we were relieved at how nice everything was. Inside is a first floor sitting room with flat screen TV and two chairs plus a kitchen table. There's a fully equipped kitchen including an electric range and a tiny dishwasher that leaked water all over the floor each time we ran it. We really were only downstairs for meals though. We spent most of our time in the more spacious upstairs where there's two sitting areas and a very effective gas fireplace (however it did seem to run out of fuel as we were packing up to leave and we had some trouble keeping the pilot light lit). There's two very small private bedrooms with full size beds, which we didn't really mind since we weren't in them very much but would probably be hard for families with children. There's no room for end tables which was annoying since both my wife and I wear glasses. All in all, it was very spacious (the pictures on their Website are a little outdated and don't do the place justice). It's really a lot of cabin for the price. The place sleeps 6 (two in each bedroom, a couch and a futon), but the four of us were comfortable and all agreed that six would be pushing it. Outside from the second floor, there's a large deck area out front overlooking Lake Logan, table, hammock and a very private hot tub. The hot tub was very clean, just right for the four of us and warmed up quickly (considering it was in the 20s). There's also a fire ring just off the deck that we didn't use but it looked to be in nice shape. The upstairs TV had limited cable channels and a working DVD and VHS combo unit. They had some decent board games too. Pros: nicely furnished spacious very clean nice hot tub Cons: Steep gravel driveway Small Bedrooms Low water pressure on all faucets and shower Dishwasher leaked Low ceilings - not suitable for anyone much over 6 ft. tall Last Words: Lake Escape is a really great value overall. We were pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness and spaciousness even though it had some quirks and imperfections. We'll probably be back again this Fall.

I've been thinking about how to do this review the right way for a few days. Anyways here goes…read more.... THERE ARE NO BEDBUGS! I spoke to the gentleman before going out about these reviews. When I showed up we were shown the beds and given the opportunity to walk around with the cabin owner. Everything looked clean. We stayed 4 nights and there were no bites between the 6 of us. Ok now that part is done -- the cabin is a bit past it's prime. There is no Wi-Fi. I am a worry wart so I was nervous about the structure of the home. Starting at the top portion of the house: there were three beds up on the left, careful of the second (or was it the third) from the top stair which isn't truly a stair anymore, it's leaning at a 45 degree angle so it would be easy to slide down the stairs if you aren't using the stair rail. The main floor: the bedroom on this floor is perfectly fine, though the bed is a bit springy. It is connected to a LARGE bathroom with a jet garden tub. The kitchen is lacking cabinet space and counter space, if you are planning on cooking. The fridge is also void of the drawers, and door rails so there's no stage on the door. The stove has seen better days but mostly works fine. The living room has 2 couches, 1 love seat, wood burner, and an older box TV. The floor is a bit weak in here, seemed like one good ragger away from caving in. There are two ways to get to the wrap around porch which is also way past it's prime. That's really all I'll say about that because it's fine enough. There is a grill. The basement: this is where the shower is located. It's also where you get to the hot tub. Other than that there wasn't anything amiss downstairs. Everything was pleasant, it was clean and everything smelled good. There were plenty of clean towels and the kitchen has enough in there, that most people can cook about anything. We found 1 tick the entire time we were there (4 nights 5 days)
