Ooohhh minibreak!!! If you're looking for somewhere to escape the Dublin rat race then try this secluded, cosy hotel in Enniskerry. Beautiful interior, roaring fires, gorgeous meals, and a day spa attached - ooh heaven! I recently took myself to the Summerhill House Hotel for a solitary weekend of rest and relaxation... that was the plan, anyway... The weekend started off quietly enough, with a luxurious midday check-in and a mid-afternoon massage.. ahh it's a tough life! Continuing on, I enjoyed a sumptuous three-course meal in the hotel's restaurant and was waited on so attentively I could have sworn I'd had my own personal waiter... relaxing? Yes... Next, it was a turn in the drawing room, a seat in a grandfather chair next to a roaring fire, snow outside and a Christmas tree in the window... absolutely divine, and still relaxing... And then I discovered the wedding party in the next room... Soon enough I was invited to join the celebrations of the happy couple, and ended up ripping up the dancefloor until the early hours of the next morning, my plan of a good book and an early night completely thwarted. Relaxing?? Hmmm, no... Good craic? Absolutely! So there you have it... the Summerhill House Hotel has all the makings of a relaxing getaway, whether it's on your lonesome, as a couple, or with a group of girlfriends. Nice little place to stay for a short weekend break away. It's not the most modern hotel, but the friendly staff, the relaxed atmosphere and the fantastic surrounding area make well up for that. The rooms are huge (unfortunately our view included the looks over the parking area, but you could still make out how nice the surrounding was) equipped with decent beds, an ok size bathroom, free wifi and tvs. The spa area is ok & the staff very friendly. After a relaxing massage we wanted to check out the remaining area - the changing rooms were great - fully stocked with cosy towels, slippers, bath robes, but the steam rooms & sauna were closed and the outdoor jacuzzi was cold. Whatever we did we could not manage to get the temperature above 27 degrees which was rather disappointing since it was a cold drizzly Jan night perfect for chilling in hot tube.After a short stay in the luke warm jacuzzi we made our way back to the hotel restaurant for dinner. Free cocktails were served as aperitif, however, they could not make up for the poor service in the restaurant. The waitress must have been new since she was not trained at all - had no clue about the wine list, put the bottle of wine we ordered unopened on the table (thank god it was a screw top otherwise we'd still sit in front of the unopened bottle) and brought the sides to our main courses 10 mins after the main course arrived (without telling us the sides are still coming...) We bared the whole situation with a big smile since everyone has to start somewhere & the hotel atmosphere was way to relaxed and nice to get upset about small little things. The food itself was tasty, but nothing extraordinary (I can remember I liked it, but that's about all I can remember...). The breakfast the next morning was much better - good buffet style breakfast with a decent choice of food and a great selection of teas - it is so hard in this country to find anything but black tea at breakfast buffets so I was very happy with my huge selection of available fruit teas. A decent hotel located just outside the Powerscourt gate. Our stay was nice enough. The room was spacious and comfortable. Certainly the hotel is convenient for exploring Wicklow. We got a really good deal on a mid-winter mini-break weekend. There were a couple of drawbacks that pushed me towards only giving two stars. The place looks fresh out of the late 80's and is showing its age. We had practically no water pressure in the shower. Breakfast was not particularly good. Their customer service needs a bit of work as well - the staff were a bit detached, and made no effort during a late-night false fire alarm. On balance we had a nice time, but I suspect one can do better for places to stay in Wicklow. read more

LIke Jo, I was also staying at the hotel when a wedding was on but I wasn't lucky for the room : we were in the sorts of cheaply built houses at the very back, where you could hear your neighbours like at home ! The room was such a disappointment, I tend to forget how great the rest of the place was. The service there was great, the little extras appreciable, the hotel beautiful inside out, never mind the fantastic location of enniskerry... but really paying the price we paid for a tiny poorly finished room, that was tough read more

Ok would be the best way to put my stay at this hotel! We arrived on a day that there was a big wedding on and were made to feel not as importnat for the duration of our stay. We wanted to get some bar food when we arrived but waited 20 minutes for a staff member to even come to the bar to take our order as we were told the staff were working at the wedding? This was unacceptable and we told the server when they came that we had been waiting. No apology at all! We then waited a further 25 minutes on our two toasted sandwiches which came out cold soggy and with no sides that we ordered. We were on a spa package "the great escape" to be precise. The spa itself was not great either. The out door hot tub is no bigger than a bath and struggles to fit more than 2 people into it. We had to wait to get in as there was a queue. When we finally got in, the water was absolutely filthy and the guests getting out remarked on this too. We were then told the package had been changed and we were only getting massages rather than what was advertise on the site which as a massage and an eye revive treatment. This was very disappointing also. Our 2 course afternoon dinner was also disappointment. The restaurant atmosphere was awful and the food was so bland, reheated and dry! Now for the positives. The reception were great help and told me and my friend some good places to go out in which we did and had a brilliant night. They also gave us a lie in the next morning! Beautiful old fashioned hotel in a picturesque setting. Booked the vintage break with some friends, included a spa treatment in the Rainforest Spa. Grace was excellent, really recommend the back massage and the spa is very peaceful although a little small. Dinner was included in the price along with a glass of prosecco. read more

Incompetent, disrespectful and arrogant. Planning for a wedding at the Summerhill was a nightmare; indeed, it went so poorly that we decided to reserve an alternative, significantly superior, venue. Not only was the wedding planner unavailable to confirm availability, suitability, or anything relevant, but he consistently failed to keep us informed in any way. Having called and emailed the hotel from San Francisco on three consecutive nights (mornings) I was unable to speak with the wedding planner (WP) because he was either at meetings or took days off. Furthermore, the wedding log was locked in his office and nobody was able to retrieve the log or contact him. Apparently there was only a single key to his office and no one (not even the manager) had his contact details. With time running out my fiancee began to panic; other hotels were quickly booking up. To expedite the process, my sister (living in Ireland) called and visited the hotel on several occasions but received the same pathetic excuses. Finally, having determined that the abominable service reflected the attitude of both the hotel and it staff we decided to reserve a more suitable venue. My financee, who is not Irish, was disappointed and dismayed by their lack of professionalism, unabashed disrespect, and utter arrogance. The Summerhill House Hotel made me embarrassed to be Irish and I am disappointed that we continue to allow such mediocrity to fester and degrade our standing in the world. Arrived at the hotel which was freezing & checked in. The room was very basic besides the fact that i had twice requested an upgrade and did not get it. Went to the bar to get food and was told you can only order food from your room. The food we got to our room was ok. We had a treatment booked for the health spa if that's what you would call it. My treatment was ok but my partner was booked in the a full hour body massage he arrive back to me after 25 mins and said the girl that did the massage just didn't want to be in work that day kept leaving the room and really didn't do a massage at all I told him to go out and sit in the "Hot tub" and after 5 mins he was back in to say the water was freezing and all he was told was well the lid was not put back on so the water went cold emm hello its a hot tub not a cold tub. The girl at the reception of the spa was very rude and also didn't want to be their. Got back to our room got ready for dinner was left standing around waiting to be seated waited that long we just seated out selves. The food was very bland n basic not very nice at all and to top it all off their was a wedding on and our room was right beside all the wedding guests so up till about 4am Sunday morning all we could hear was people shouting and running up and down out side our room and slamming doors. We got up early and left as soon as we could. I did tell the lady at reception who was very nice about all that happened and that we would never be coming back and all i was told was god sorry about that did not offer us any money off the room or anything. It is not a luxury hotel as it's shown on their web site. If i had of stayed in a hostel in Dublin city i would have had more peace. read more
