An old go-to lunch place that recently got a much-needed facelift is Sultan, a restaurant that serves Mediterranean food. My companion and I stumbled upon this long-forgotten place in our search for a new place to eat in Salcedo Village and we were both really pleasantly surprised to find it brand-spanking new but still quite familiar. Looking at the menu, it was good to see that they kept their list of food options since there really was nothing wrong with the food ever since. My friend ordered the Moussaka (Php 205), a traditional baked Greek dish of layered mince beef, eggplant and cheese, while I got the Souvlaki platter (Php 340), which consists of two sticks of beef kebabs, served with salad and French fries. One can also opt to be served any of their rice options (Beryani Rice, Butter Rice, Vegetable Pilaf, etc) instead of the fries. Once our dishes arrived and we took a bite of our respective dishes, we were glad to note that the good ol' flavors of Sultan still remained.

BEEF CURRY: Fireworks of flavor in my mouth! Definitely a place to go to eat the best food in town!

I was invited by an officemate to eat here but it took her a month to convince me. I must say that it was one of the best decisions I have made in my food life. Since my first lunch, the rest of my lunch life history is written in there. Here's the thing: I hate it when i get disappointed with the food so it stops me from experimenting. Usually if I like a certain food in a restaurant, I will order that maybe in the next hundred of orders. But in Sultan, i was never afraid to try other dishes as they are all heaven!

I ordered the speciality Biryani meal with lamb. The rice was not as good. It was not Basmati rice. On top of the food was a bunch of supposedly sautéed onions, but the onions were raw and crunchy. The hummus appetizer was actually good. The one star rating is contributed to the "service" charge (about 10%) markup. It is marked in very fine print at the bottom of the menu. Sorry folks, I won't be back. Attached is a pic to demonstrated the misinformation in the menu. Good luck finding the service charge statement.

Only tried the falafel plate - not a fan. They were too soft, texture was way off (not crunchy enough), and flavor was just ok.

I learned about Hossein through my best friend, who loved their food so much that she couldn't stand up after clearing her plates. Neither could I, and that's a good sign. First things first: one does not simply enter Hossein without trying their Roti Channai (P125). Served with a mild sauce mixed with Indian spices, the roti is soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. As for mains, I strongly recommend their Lamb Shish Kebab (P550) and their Raan Masala (P2780), the latter of which is leg of lamb cooked in a creamy and thick curry sauce, mixed with special herbs and spices. In my opinion, the Raan Masala is definitely the star of the menu. Even the sauce of the masala goes really well with the kebab. So much so that I ended up dipping my kebab in the sauce of the masala instead of the actual sauce of the kebab. All of this doesn't come with rice yet, so you'll definitely want to order a heaping of buttery-hot Biryani Rice (P180), good for two people. I used to have a "don't love it, don't hate it" attitude toward Persian cuisine, but because of Hossein, I am now stuck in the "will eat everything until I puke" phase. Easily the best (and priciest) Persian restaurant I've tried in Metro Manila.

They also gave us 2 menus - - one was the Cafe Adriatico menu, the other was Abe's - - we had our choice from either. We ordered 3 dishes & all were good: 1. BISTEK FILIPINO: nice dish. The meat was lean, plenty of shallots & sauce. Not the same as the Bistek Tagalog that they serve at Fely J's. Main difference is that this dish uses top blade beef & Fely J uses rib eye - - which is much more flavorful. Still a good dish. 2. LANGKA AT PUSIT SA GATA: I didn't try it, but my wife enjoyed it. 3. TORTANG TALONG: Cooked to perfection. Nice size. No issues. Enjoy.

My roommate and I used to call it our resident soup! I suppose sipping a hot bowl of soup reminds me of home. That sort of comfort is what i felt with my first sip of the steamy "nanay's pochero". The soup had clean meaty flavor without a hint of msg that often runs coarse through your throat. There were a couple of chorizo slices enhancing the already delicious soup. The meat was succulent and for me, the bone marrow sealed the deal - that feast of fatty, beefy, butter-like flavors melting in your mouth is one of the great joys of eating bulalo! YUM! The mood of the place is relaxing and for a brief moment there was a warm home-like feel to it. I guess I don't need to meditate to transcend elsewhere, all i need is good food! how great is that?! You would have guessed by now that this was not just a great dining experience for me but a pleasant emotional experience too and for that I'm giving this place 5 stars.

They serve Persian and Mediterranean foods which are two of my favorites! The best part? It's just a block away from my building so if you do visit, there's a possibility of you running into me there (don't forget to say hi!)! Ababu's food is very affordable but unlike most cheap eats, Ababu serves amazing food! Their Beef Kebab Rice Meal is my favorite! It consists of charbroiled ground beef with egg, corn, onions and tomatoes on rice. They also serve bottomless iced teas with the meals though I believe they use powdered iced tea. The only drawback is that the place can get really hot and a little smoky when they are cooking the meat and the poor air-conditioning sure doesn't help.

Good thing there's one located across my office! I love their Chicken Rice Meal, which, at Php 139, comes with grilled chicken breast, a cup of rice, a slice of butter, some corn, tomatoes, onions, and a sunny-side-up egg. A bit of warning, though: the grilled chicken is really just that. It's not grilled barbecue-style so it's sauce-free, which is good news for weight watchers. It's a heavy meal, enough to fuel you from lunch to dinner. In fact, it has become my go-to lunch for days when I practice hot yoga after office and afternoon snacks are a no-no. My sister, the shawarma lover, loves their Shawarma Rice--no surprise! Their meals include unlimited yogurt dressing (of course!) and unlimited iced tea! Don't be surprised when they offer you one pitcher though you're dining alone. Though certainly amusing, that pressured me to drink more iced tea than I normally consume!

The falalels, however, were really small and tasted pretty bland. I've had better and I could do without the salsa-like sad excuse for a salad. I'm giving the restaurant a generous 2 stars for the experience as a whole. This is gonna be long so I apologize. First of all it was very unprofessional how their staff was sitting in the balcony area vaping and customers had to ask them if they could use their table. Secondly, my friend and I met here to catch up over dinner and beer, and because she's a zomato gold member, she can avail of perks like a "buy one get one" beverage promotion, Which the restaurant had hard printed copies of by the way with the terms and conditions clearly printed on the back. However, when I went to pay for the bill I noticed they charged us for each beer instead of just one for the price of two. Long story short, there was a "discussion" between my friend, the cashier, their manager and zomato support over the phone. The restaurant didn't want to honor the zomato gold deal and said the canned beer we got didn't count. Although, as I pointed out to the girl, was nowhere stated on the T&Cs. She obviously didn't read it carefully. She was at a loss so she called the manager who told my friend that they only do it for other drinks. Zomato asked why not. The restaurant finally gave in but said this would be the last time. Don't agree to deals you can't commit to. It's embarrassing when you're obviously just trying to find loopholes. Sketchy business practices. And please give your staff a place to have a break, eat, have a smoke. When will businesses here ever learn that usually the customer is always right...
