I have never tried souvlaki before, even in my pre-vegan days (ashamed!), so this means only one thing. I dragged a few friends with me all the way from Makati to BF Homes just so we could try this place out. It's a charming and quaint place with beautiful, mediterranean-themed decor. I mean, anything mediterranean is beautiful to me! I think you can tell the difference between a good falafel/souvlaki/mediterranean sandwich wrap thing and wannabe local versions by the sauce they use. Good places use actual tahini sauce (sesame-based sauce), while those you see in food markets, kiosks, and the like use this garlic cream sauce thing (that Pinoys loooove and swear by - not me though) similar to what cheap shawarma places use. Anyway, I was really pleased to know that they use tahini for the vegan falafel souvlaki. Inside it are elongated pieces of falafel and veggies. It was a satisfying meal nonetheless, and if you're bringing friends, their dip platter is EXCELLENT! Baba ganoush, hummus, olives and tzatziki (tzatziki is not vegan though, has yogurt) served with pita bread.

There are so many more options for eating out and we no longer have to brave the traffic heading to Makati, Ortigas, or even Quezon City. Once such occasion was when friends had the itch to eat good Greek food, so we headed to Aguirre Avenue and made our way to Ble. There were three of us so we felt it was perfect that they have a dip platter and we can try a bit of all their appetizers. It had Grecian favorites like babaganush, tzatziki, popular hummus, and a few pieces or olives, along with slices of pita bread. I then had their gemista - bell peppers stuffed with rice and bits of wagyu, then baked to perfection. I liked that it wasn't overwhelming and not too filling, mainly because I wanted to save room for dessert. Finally, the time for dessert came, and we each took a slice of baklava. Oh it was heavenly. They take pride in the 50 layers of handmade fyllo pastry, pistachios and syrup that altogether makes one hel of a dessert. It's a fantastic way to end a meal. These days, not so many people say "oh you're from Las Piñas? Where is that? Is it far?" Thanks to little restaurants like Ble that make the southern star on the map shine brighter.

The Mezedes sampler was tasty -- they didn't skimp on the bread, and all of the dips were well seasoned. Briami is baked eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, and zucchini, which had a little too much olive oil and not enough seasoning. One serving of Potatoes Sto Fourno is surprisingly huge and not at all oily, though quite plain. What got to me was the Greek lemonade. I asked the waitstaff what was in it and she said it was just fresh lemonade. Lemme get this straight: it's fresh lemonade that's served in a Greek-themed restaurant, so it must be Greek lemonade. But then, they also serve cafe Americano. Eh? While the food was hot, the service was lukewarm. It helped that the waitstaff were prompt and civil, but they seemed distracted, as if they were inconvenienced to serve another set of patrons. This was the lunch hour, and the place was only 40% full. To any business owners: your service staff's demeanor is significantly responsible in setting the tone for transactions with your customers. If your staff act like they don't care about the customers, the customers won't feel like they need to care about your business. Behavior is contagious. Good thing I care a lot about what I eat, so it's likely I'll return here for their plant-based meals. But not after I forage elsewhere for better service first.

With all the new restaurants popping out in the new building, people misses this resto. This is my third time in this restaurant and they haven't changed. They're still as good since my first visit. Our usual first course is the Mezedes (spreads swerved with breads). My personal favorite is the Melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant spread). I love the tartiness of this dip that is combined with the nice earthy, smokey eggplant. Tzatziki (cucumber, carrots, and yogurt) It's refreshing and clean. I'm not a fan of cucumber, but when it combines with yogurt, it work wonders. Hummus (chickpeas with tahini) is creamy with a hint of lemon acidity. I just prefer a stronger tahini flavor in it, but its really good. Bourou Bourou is a nice, simple, hearty vegetable soup. It is similar to minestrone, its light and flavorful. Arni Me Kritharkia (Orzo with Lamb Meatballs). Orzo cooked in a rich, tomato based sauce with lamb meatballs. The rich tomato ragu blends well with the lamb meatballs. It's a very rich & flavorful meatball pasta. Pastitsio is their version of lasagna, instead of sheet pasta, tube pasta is used. It's simple, yet flavorful pasta dish. Rich, meaty tomato sauce and bechamel on one side. The better thing about this is the sauce are served and overflown on the sides. So we can scoop as much sauce as we can. Chicken Souvlaki, my personal favortie. Marinated large cut chicken fillets, skewered with vegetables and grilled to perfection. The chicken was marinated that produced a moist, flavorful meat. It's not dry as how we expected it. Galaktoboureko is basically a custard pie with phyllo pastry on top. It is similar to a cheesecake, but its yogurt custard with a nice, crusty phyllo on top. It's smooth and creamy complimented by the honey that added sweetness to this dessert. Kos is one of my favorite Greek restaurant in QC. I've eaten there, and in the Eastwood branch as well. To be quite honest, I have a slew of friends that sing Cyma's praises all day long but I find it to be quite average. With the exception of the salad which is always a delight to eat regardless of which one you order, but my personal favorite is the Horiatiki Salata (traditional Greek village salad). For the main, I've always preferred the shoulder loin lamb chops. It's somewhat on the bland side, but lamb is the love of my life so that's just fine. It's my personal experience that you can't go wrong with the gyros, if you're stumped on what to order.
