Needed a tire replaced asap and they said on the phone they could help. Pull up and I realize pretty quick it's a discount tire shop that sells bootleg brands which tbf im sure fits some people's needs just fine. There are zero other cars there being worked on. It's just one guy in an office when I get there. Dude looks at my tire for a solid 2 seconds, walks back to the office and tells me I need two brand new tires. I tell him the tires themselves are only about a year or so old and are technically under warranty (BJs makes it impossible to actually use the warranty which is another story). He tells me the tires are too worn (not even remotely true) and the only way this will work is by replacing both front tires. Politely declined, went elsewhere, got one single tire replaced that day with no theatrics.

I've bought tires and wheels from Hogan in Beverly for over 30 years. Today I went in for a simple…read morewheel/tire swap (winter to summer), something Hogan has done for me on my cars for years. For the first time ever, 3 of the staff inspected my summer tires and claimed they were dangerous with early 'dry rot' detected and refused to swap the tires, suggesting I needed 4 new ones. The date code was Feb-16, making the tires 8 years old. They claimed that DOT law prohibited them from swapping them. I can find no proof of that online, only 'suggestions'. They have maybe 8K on them and are in excellent condition, with no detectable deterioration and min 3/4 tread depth left. I am a car guy and keep my vehicles in top shape. I stopped using Direct Tire in the '80s when I witnessed multiple 'up-selling' scenarios while waiting for tire service - 'did you know your brakes are dangerous?' 'Let me show you why you need new shocks', etc. I suspect that Hogan staff is now incentivized to do the same - there's a new crew there. I'm never going back. Good luck trading on ignorance and fear, guys.

This is a big expense for me and because I like cars and have some time on my hands I did a little research into tires on the market. I didn't realize how many different features are available studs, disposal, rating, brand, stocking fee, balancing fee, and if it includes insurance/rotations. I started to settle on the continental tire as a good mud and snow as I didn't need studs. I decided to visit places in person because online quotes were very similar and I needed to ask a few questions about some of the subtle differences to make sure we were talking about the same thing. My quote from bjs seemed like a better price option (attached) but the thing that turned me off to that was I waited there to be seen by the cashier at least 20 minutes with no acknowledgement when I came in. Also he wouldn't let me see what he was typing in the computer I just got a handwritten estimate. He then had to help out other customers with propane and non car related questions that were being discussed. I have no problem with younger people working but I just got the feeling this was someone with inexperience trying to do to many things - the last thing he mentioned was he wasn't sure when the tires could arrive not really giving me a lot of hope or confidence and really the enjoyment for the work and passion for customers just wasn't there. I brought the estimate to Rick who was ready to do business right when I got in no wait and no distractions. He was honest about his price explaining how the difference was because the bigger companies can get away without labor costs. Rick had the tires ready the next day I got a phone call when it was done he even left the keys in the drop box as I couldn't be there at 530 closing. When it came time to pay the bill rick had taken off about 10 dollars (see attached) and I ended up getting the touring tires that I found at Hogan and town fair tire that were more expensive than Rick. This final price included free rotations and I also got a recommendation to have the exterior looked at something I needed to be reminded about. It is a busy season for tires and I am not the only person on the market but getting great customer service really puts me in a thankful spirit and excited about Christmas too.

I thought that it was just a slow leak, but my mom, who doesn't always make the best decisions, said to just get a new tire. So that's what I went to Sullivan Tire to do. I told the guy behind the counter (whose name I wish I could remember) why I was there, and told him that I wanted a good tire, but not a super-top-of-the-line one. He could have just kept his mouth shut and let me spend money on a new tire, but instead he said that they'd check it first and see whether or not that was necessary. A short time later, he let me know that they'd found a nail in the tire, and that they'd removed it and patched it up. I was out of there quickly, and on the cheap (under $40). Can't ask for much more than that. I know where I'll be going next time I need tire service.
