We ordered the orange chicken and the sweet and sour shrimp--both were absolutely delicious and tasted incredibly fresh. What really made the experience stand out was the hospitality. The owner came out personally and surprised us with a beautiful fruit plate on the house, which was such a thoughtful touch. Great food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere. I have been to this place a few times as a local but I say few times because it is so expensive and the quality is just not there. I only go in a pinch but it usually gets thrown away. The $23+ entrees do not even come with rice so I homemake my own. The last order I made was: Spring Rolls $13 Cashew Chicken Orange Chicken The Cashew Chicken you could tell was boiled and it was sitting in water with the vegetables. The spring rolls are supposed to have (as their menu says) ground chicken, glass noodles, carrots, onion, cabbage, and celery spice. There is nothing in the spring roll except cabbage and a little tiny tiny tiny bit of glass noodles. Cut it in half so you can see. read more

Second time getting takeout from here and Sullivan has converted my husband into liking green beans. when I order Chinese food, I ALWAYS order the string beans. My girl and I rolled in here at for an early dinner. Pot stickers, Orange chicken, white rice. We had a feast on this fresh tasty authentic Chinese food. We ordered the spicy pork wontons with spicy sauce, xiaolong bao, and the candied walnut shrimp. Sumei, the owner, is an absolute gem! She was so friendly and accommodating, definitely the kind of customer service you hope to find and we did! The candied walnut shrimp was hands down the best I've ever had in the area. The spicy pork wontons came with a luxurious sauce that was to die for, and the xiaolong bao had that perfect savory soup inside. Seriously, the ginger and garlic sauce they provided should be sold in stores because it's that good! The taste and portion sizes here are even better than Din Tai. We've tried this place twice (second chances, right?) over the years, but disappointing food and value both times! This is a reasonably clean restaurant with a comfortable, quiet atmosphere. Service was courteous and speedy but bland food for slightly high prices, and the fact that they charged extra for rice a la carte made it a rather poor value AND dining experience both times we tried it. Wow!!!! Would have never found this Chinese restaurant without a recommendation. It's based on Shanghainese cuisine and is fantastic. It's a small owned restaurant and everything is cooked fresh to order. It comes out family style too. We had the luck of the Irish when we found Sullivan on Yelp . We were looking for real Chinese food and we were pleasantly surprised to come upon this very good , very clean and excellent service provided by Sullivan proprietors . And no, they aren't from Ireland but came from a city north of Beijing . The owner is dedicated to making her restaurant welcoming and clean . They have a dumplings dish that was absolutely delicious and is as good as the fancy place in nearby South Coast Plaza . We will be back to try their dumplings brunch that is only available from 11 to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Our favorite Chinese restaurant in Costa Mesa closed last year and we've been trying different places ever since then, but I think Sullivan's will be THE Chinese restaurant for us now! FYI: I don't think it's always the same person who answers the phone for orders, but if it's a gentleman, he may be hard to understand (and he'll have a harder time understanding you). I hate giving bad reviews to mom and pop restaurants, but this place is just not good. Came here on the recommendation of a colleague. We should've been wearier when it was a Friday and the place was empty. The (semi) good: xiao long bao and beef chow fun. The skin on the xiao long bao is thicker than it should be, but overall quite juicy. Beef chow fun was not as salty and oily as it looked, so it was enjoyable enough. The bad: hot and sour soup had a funny taste to it, like the bamboo shoots have gone bad. Also the chicken tasted like rubber. The kung pao shrimp was gross, either the shrimps were freezer burnt or they were spoilt. Nice friendly service from the lady in the kitchen, whom I presumed to be the owner. ~ $70 pre-tip for two people for mediocre Chinese food. How sad. read more

I ordered pick up here tonight and it was quite horrible. I got the happy family dish, combination fried rice, and the general tso chicken. The fried rice and the happy family dish had a very fishy smell, I think it was the shrimp in addition the chicken was a bit mushy and nasty smelling, the fried rice was stale. We ended up taking a bite and throwing away everything I walked in and there was no one eating there that should've been my gauge to run. Will never return. So my family and I were looking for a place to eat. We were about to walk into Orange Thai, which we are totally used to and they have great food. However, we weren't set on it and we had not eaten in this place called Sullivan's and we have lived in the area now for five years. It is very difficult in Southern California to find a really good authentic Chinese food place. I am a server at Changs and I can tell you right now that is not authentic food. It costs a lot you get decent food and you get basic Chinese options with a little bit of Asian infusion. This place is strictly authentic. They have fantastic soup dumplings would recommend the owners are incredibly kind which I cannot go far enough to say how much that means as somebody who works in the restaurant business I will be back many times from here on out the food is incredible. The meat is tender. Their dishes are not loaded with sauces or MSG. The flavors speak for themselves and they are truly incredible. yummmmmmm! It's a pretty small dining room in a busy shopping center & easy to miss. You'd never expect a Chinese food restaurant to be called "Sullivan" but this place is the real deal. The food was fresh & hot. The veggies were perfectly cooked, seasoned, & crispy. The meat was tender & flavorful. The won ton soup was amazing, full of chicken, shrimp, pork, wontons, & some veggies. The owner is warm & inviting. They were celebrating their 15th anniversary when we went there and had some bonus tasty treats to share with customers & send you home with a bunch. My favorite was a deep fried egglant. The owner said it's hard to make & not on the regular menu. What a treat!
