I had the orange chicken with the purple rice which was very tasty my wife had the garlic chicken dish the purple rice also both from the lunch special which you get plenty of food!. The service was very nice & helpful. The ambience was really nice also I loved the outdoor seating!. I will definitely return next time I'm in town!

Our nice waiter noticed me using my paper napkins to sop up the oil under my order of Black Pepper Beef Steak & offered to take it back to the kitchen to remove more of the oil. I appreciated that and thanked him for his attention. It was returned less oily and I must say the beef was plentiful, tender and tasty (though still a bit too oily for my taste). The rice was very good: cooked to perfection and not at all oily. My wife ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken, which I sampled from her plate and was given the rest of from her "take home" container. The sauce help to make it a more flavorful dish. The chicken was tender and soft, however, without the sauce, it was bland and tasted odd. At home the next day I examined several of the pieces and wondered why, when each piece was cut in half and the sauce removed, it looked different from the white meat I was used to. There seemed to be something unusual about its fiber and structure and the way it came apart in layers. The waiter was competent and attentive and the outside environment, near the beach, was enjoyable so, altogether, my experience was "OK."

I'm giving Peony a 4 because I can't give a 3.5- Food was hot, order was correct, the price is great for Laguna, and overall it was decent... with that said, the egg rolls were a bit garlicky, the wontons not super creamy (possibly made with egg to thicken?), the noodles were more of a spaghetti type noodle, and the orange chicken wasn't the typical thick crunchy chicken but more of chicken chunks tossed in Orange sauce. Might order again but maybe try different items.

Peony Chinese Kitchen Kind of fancy. Atmosphere: 4 Stars. It has a Jazz music feel and a bit of a romantic vibe. There is indoor and outdoor seating. A menu for drinks. Service: 5 Stars. The waitress was very attentive and polite. The food was brought quickly. Quality: 5 Stars. The food was clean and neat. I felt the food was too clean. I was thinking that the chinese food would be dirty in a greasy junk food way. Instead, I felt like I was eating healthy. I was left satisfied in terms of filling my belly but not with that heavy feeling after eating fried junk food. Perhaps out of bad luck, I remember my fortune cookie being empty of the paper fortune note. I felt that was odd. Value: 3 Stars. I paid $15 for a lunch special. How do I feel about that? I think I came with the wrong expectations. Given the location, in Laguna Beach, everything is going to be more expensive. While not too long ago I had lunch at a Mr. Wok chinese food for $10 and left with left-overs. Peony beats Mr. Wok on quality of their food but Mr. Wok won in the quantity category. I feel that one of the biggest differences was in the Service at Peony Chinese Kitchen. IF I had gotten the food to go, it would not have mattered but I would have paid the same amount of money.

Ordered take out and it was still very hot when it arrived (via Door Dash). The portions were big and the food was packed well. We got Orange Chicken, and General Tao's Chicken. Both were delicious- crispy and just the right amount of sauce. You can pick your spice level, which is nice. Would definitely order here again.

This place is FANTASTIC. Food was delicious and came out so fast and it was piping hot. We ordered the kung pao chicken, black pepper steak and chow mein. Let me preface this by saying the steak... Insanely delicious and tender I PROMISE YOU IT IS DELICIOUS! Do not sleep on the steak, the kung pao chicken was also so good I love the inclusion of peanuts adds such a good taste. Service was great our waitress was adorable and so sweet! Ambiance is beautiful you are right across the ocean at laguna and the prices are actually decent it won't break your wallet like half the other restaurants around. I highly recommend this place if you want big servings and delicious food!

Staff are phenomenal! Food was good but the mapo tofu didn't seem to be as nice as the last time. Still very reasonably priced and we will go back!

Five stars for the food, service, and ambience. We found this wonderful, traditional, Chinese restaurant a few years ago and have been eating here regularly ever since. Not only is the food delicious but the staff is fantastic. Also, they have a great happy hour, every day of the week! We would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves Chinese food or is looking to try it for the first time!

The Kung Pao Chicken was so good! Although I ordered take out from the restaurant, while I was waiting for the food the man working there was so attentive and offered me a drink while I waited. Overall great little spot to visit for a quick bite in Laguna!

I don't know how I didn't take pictures of the food we got!! But it was amazing and authentic. This is the place to go if you are in the Laguna area and want Chinese. We ordered the vegetable chow mein, miso soup (phenomenal) and vegetable egg rolls. No complaints and all wonderful. They have a pretty good selection if you are vegan or vegetarian! The service was great, very hospitable and kind. The ambiance is traditional Chinese and cozy. The pricing was fair. I loved our experience and of course the food. I hope to be back!!

Orange Chicken Lunch Special with Egg Fried Rice
    Kevin V.

The service was phenomenal with an excellent greeting, attentive care, and continuous refills on our waters. The ambiance was great with a cool breeze and quiet atmosphere. The 4-star is because the food was fairly bland. We ordered the Orange Chicken and Mongolian Beef lunch special with egg fried rice. The fried rice was especially bland missing the savory tones I expected. The orange chicken was missing some of the citrus/zesty flavor I like. The Mongolian beef was our favorite dish with nothing to complain about. Over all, a solid 4 I would recommend if you are in the mood for Chinese food in Laguna beach.

The Eggplant tasted like they had emptied an entire salt shaker into it and was inedible. Our server, for lack of a better word, Isabel, was extremely rude and inattentive the entire time. Isabel thought it would be a good idea to focus on the other tables while basically ignoring ours. The worst part was at the end of the meal after I had requested she take the charge off the bill for the horrible food. Isabel begrudgingly agreed to take it off with not as much as any type of apology. It then took her probably 10 minutes to return after gleefully chatting with other tables and walking by us maybe 4-5 times without making eye contact. Once Isabel produced her handheld POS terminal and asked me how I would be paying, I called her out on the lack of courtesy and basic manners. I asked her if she'd be apologizing for the lousy food and she literally said "No, it's not my fault." All the time she had this maniacal grin on her face that was not only out of place but a little on the psychotic side. Isabel kept glaring at me every time she walked by as if to say I don't owe you a thing and there's nothing you can do about it. After speaking with the manager (Shu) I understand how Isabel has this attitude. He was oblivious to the lack of decency and common sense displayed. He just kept repeating the fact that they had removed it from the bill without the least bit of remorse. All this time I was speaking with Shu, Isabel kept walking around with this crazed grin on her face to hear what we were discussing. I've honestly never experienced any server like her in my entire life. The best Shu could do was to tell me the next time I came in they'd seat me with another server. The next time? This speaks to the oblivious nature of the employees at China Moon. He actually thought that after that, I would be returning. Isabel was the weirdest server I've literally ever had in my life and it was clear at the end that Shu didn't have a clue about customer service or the dining experience. I would avoid this place at all costs unless you enjoy being treated like garbage by people that don't have any clue what service is.
